Introduction
The Epistle to the Colossians was written by Paul to
the church at Colossae during his first imprisonment in
Rome (around 60 AD). Colossae was about 100 miles east
of Ephesus. Tradition tells us that the church probably
was established by Epaphras (Colossians 1:7), who was a
convert of Paul's during his three-year ministry in
Ephesus.
The people of Colossae apparently enjoyed some
degree of sophistication. This was evidenced by their
readiness to accept ideas developed from the complex
mixture of Greek philosophy and pagan religions that
later became known as gnosticism, an heretical belief. This
belief is still found in some cults today.
Gnosticism stressed salvation through intuitive"
knowledge rather than through the new birth, and it
assigned to Jesus a place subordinate to the Godhead or
Trinity. Also, this doctrine replaced the redemptive work
of Christ on Calvary with an emphasis on personal works
and fostered the worship of angelic beings.
The Apostle Paul responded to this erroneous
doctrine by describing the full authority assigned to
Christ and showing man's complete redemption in and
through Him. He encouraged the Colossians to learn to
walk in the grace and liberty provided by Jesus on the

Walking Worthy of the Lord
(Colossians 1:1-13)
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and
Timotheus our brother, To the saints and faithful brethren in
Christ which are at Colosse: Grace be unto you, and peace, from
God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. We give thanks to
God and the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always
for you, Since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus, and of the love
which ye have to all the saints. For the hope which is laid up for
you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth
of the gospel; Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world;
and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye
heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth: As ye also learned of
Epaphras our dear fellow servant, who is for you a faithful
minister of Christ; Who also declared unto us your love in the
Spirit.

living
You may say you are a Christian, but Jesus said the
tree is known by its fruit. Citrus treeslemons, oranges,
grapefruits, tangerinesall look very much alike. The
leaves look the same, the coloring is the same and the
shape of the trees is the same. The average person cannot
tell exactly what kind of tree it is until they see the fruit.
Can people tell by looking at your life what kind of
tree you are? Also, do you realize that you can increase,
not only in fruitfulness, but in the knowledge of God?
Many Christians are just as they were five years ago
or when they first got saved. They are not increasing. In
order to increase, you must apply the Word in your life.
To increase, you must read the Word each time in a fresh
light, as if you had never read it before. That way, you
will always find insight and knowledge that you did not
have. If you do not expect to find anything new in the
Word, you will not find it.
Partakers of the Inheritance
Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious
power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness; Giving
thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of
the inheritance of the saints in light.
(Colossians 1:11-12, my boldface)
