INITIAL PREPARATION (SUBTASK 70-23-03-230-002)

NOTE: 1. The surface to be inspected must be free of paint or other surface coating which
will decrease the defect indications.
2. The cleaned surface must be also free from cleaning agents.
3. Surface contamination will cause the penetrant to stay on the surface, which will
give incorrect indications.
4. Contamination in the defect will limit or stop the entry of the penetrant, which
will decrease the defect detectability.
5. Refer TASK 70-11-03-300-503 or 70-11-34-300-503 for cleaning the parts by
Aqueous Degreasing.

Fully clean the parts to remove residue oil, dirt and scale, unwanted
material, or other surface contaminants by the cleaning method specified
in the EM.

Air dry the parts after aqueous cleaning. Protect the parts from
airborne/handling contamination.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE (SUBTASK 70-23-03-230-003)

Apply ZL-27A fluorescent penetrant to the parts by one of the method
given below (Tick as applicable):
Put parts fully into the solution
Spray Procedure
Flow-on Procedure
Brush Procedure
NOTE: 1. Parts must be dry and cool (49 deg. C max. or cool enough to touch by hand before
applying the penetrant, to prevent damage to the penetrant liquid.
CAUTION: FOR SPRAY TECHNIQUES, ON A MANUALLY OPERATED LINE, PENETRANT MUST
BE APPLIED IN THE UV-LIGHT TO MAKE SURE THE COVERAGE IS COMPLETE.

Let the parts drain for 20 to 60 minutes.

NOTE: 1. Include the drain time in the total time that the penetrant touches the inspected
surface. This time must not be less than 20 minutes or more than 60 minutes.
2. If the penetrant becomes dry, or the drain time is more than one hour, re-apply
the penetrant and permit the penetrant to drain for 5 minutes maximum.
3. If the drain time is more than 2 hours the part must be fully cleaned of the NDE
process chemical, the penetrant must be re-applied and the parts drained as given
below.

Remove the penetrant from the surface.

NOTE: 1. The spray gun nozzle must be adjusted to give a low velocity, moderately fine
spray using a max. air press. Of 25 psi (172kPa) & max. water press. of 25 psi
(172kPa), at a min. distance of 12 inch (30cm) from the part. Always be careful
with closed areas such as undercuts, blocked holes and oilways.

a) Rinse the parts by one of the following methods (Tick as a applicable) :

Spray with water.
Put in a water bath for a time of 90 sec. max. The water must be at 50
to 90 deg. F (10 to 35 deg. C)
b) Apply the CoMat 06-045 hydrophilic penetrant remover (emulsifier) by
one of the following methods (Tick as applicable)
Tank application
Spray procedure
NOTE: 1. The hydrophilic penetrant remover (emulsifier) contact time must not be more than
90 sec.
2. The hydrophilic penetrant remover (emulsifier) can be lightly agitated to get a
satisfactory mix with water.
3. For max. concentration of hydrophilic penetrant removers with water refer to
SUBTASK 70-23-00-290-001.
4. For spray equipment, the concentration of CoMat 06-045 hydrophilic penetrant
remover must not be more than 5% with water.

JOB DESCRIPTION

c) Rinse the parts- Stop the effect of the hydrophilic penetrant remover by
one of the following methods (Tick as applicable)

TECH

CERT.
STAFF

Immediately after the application time of the penetrant remover put

the parts fully in a bath of water for a max. of 90 seconds. The water
rinse must be agitated by air.
Spray the parts with water (either manually or automatically), until
the parts are flushed to a point where only the surface penetrant is
removed.
NOTE: 1. The temperature of water must be 50 to 95 deg. F (10 to 35 deg. C)
2. The spray gun nozzle must be adjusted to give a low velocity, moderately fine
spray using a max. air press. of 25 psi (172kPa) & max. water press. of 25 psi
(172kPa), at a min. distance of 12 inch (30 cm) from the part.

d) Flush interior passages with a small tube until the water runs clear.
Immediately remove pooled water from parts to prevent corrosion
pitting if necessary.
4

Dry the Parts

NOTE: 1. Drying must start in less than20 minutes after the last flush.
2. Do not permit parts with pooled water caught in their cavities to be put in a heat
chamber.
3. Always make sure that areas such as undercuts, blocked holes and oilways are
fully dry.
4. You can also use suction to remove water from cavities.

a) Use filtered dry, compressed air, at a maximum pressure of 25 psi

(172kPa), at a distance of 12 inches (30 cm) from the part to remove
caught water and allow to dry
b) If required fully dry the parts in a heat chamber, at a maximum
temperature of 160 deg. F (70 deg. C), for not more than 30 minutes.

Apply CoMat 06-032 dry developer to the inspection area and permit it to
stay on the part for a minimum of 10 minutes. Remove the unwanted dry
developer by shaking the parts or using dry compressed air at a max. air
pressure of 5 psi (35 KPa).
NOTE: 1. Apply dry developer Immediately after the part has fully dried.
2.For aluminum castings & carbon liners, It is important to have a 1030 min.
penetrant bleed-out time and then apply dry developer only to Indications you are
not sure of. Make an analysis immediately.
3.Parts must not be open to exposure of UV light between process step and
inspection

Inspection of Parts
NOTE: 1. Penetrants and removers must be from the same manufacturer.
2. The inspection area for FPI must be suitably dark with protection from white light.
White light must not be more than 20 Lux (2 foot candles) at the Inspection area.
For local inspection, darken the area with a black sheet.
3. Install the UV-light to prevent glare during the inspection.
4. Do not do continuous visual Insp. for more than 2 hours at one time. There must
be no visual concentration during this time
5. Visual aid s (such as dental mirrors & borescopes) during inspections of surfaces
that are not easy to see by direct vision.
6. Put the UV borescope probe ends from the inspection surface so that you get
optimum light intensity as well as clarity of focus.
7. Parts must be Inspected In less than 2 hours of developing. If time after developing
is more than 2 hours, parts must be cleaned and do procedure again.
8. If there are more than four hours between dry developer & inspection or more
than one hour between non-aqueous developer and inspection, then clean the
parts & do the procedure again.
9. Circle indications & areas that one is not sure of using with one of the approved
temporary marking methods as given in SPP TASK 70-09-01-400501.

a) Visually examine the part in UV-light, in a darkened area, to the

acceptance standards. Examine all unsatisfactory indications with low
power magnification in UV light.
OBSERVATION :

b) PENETRANT "WIPE-OFF" PROCEDURE. SUBTASK 70-23-03-230-004

NOTE: 1. Use this procedure if you are not sure about the penetrant Indications.
2. The procedure can only be used one time for each Indication
CAUTION: ALWAY$ BE CAREFUL DURING PENETRANT WlPE-OFF PROCEDURE, BECAUSE IF
THERE IS NO SECOND INDICATION, DO NOT THINK THAT THE FIRST INDICATION
WAS NOT IMPORTANT. SMALL CRACKS CAN HOLD VOLUMES OF PENETRANTS,
SUFFICIENT FOR A SECOND INDICATION.

1. Use a cotton bud made moist with CoMat 01-031 acetone or

CoMat 01-124 isopropyl alcohol, to lightly clean the penetrant
indication. Let the surface of the part dry and then apply a thin
layer of CoMat 06-030 non -aqueous developer.
