AWS Certification Photo Requirements

AWS adopts the same guidelines for photos as does the U.S. Department of State for passport
photos. The following guidelines are borrowed and modified from the U.S. Department of State
website.
Your photo is a vital part of your application. To learn more, review the information below on
how to provide a suitable photo to avoid processing delays. The acceptance of your photo is
always at the discretion of the AWS.
We recommend you use a professional passport photo service to ensure your photo meets all
the requirements.

If you are applying for a Certification, you must provide one (1) passport-style
photograph. Your photo must be:

In color
Printed on photo quality paper
2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) in size
Sized such that the head is between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inches (between 25 and 35 mm)
from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head.
Taken within the last 6 months to reflect your current appearance
Taken in front of a plain white or off-white background
Taken in full-face view directly facing the camera
With a neutral facial expression and both eyes open
Taken in clothing that you normally wear on a daily basis:
o Uniforms should not be worn in your photo, except religious clothing that is
worn daily.
o Do not wear a hat or head covering that obscures the hair or hairline, unless
worn daily for a religious purpose. Your full face must be visible, and the head
covering must not cast any shadows on your face.
o Headphones, wireless hands-free devices or similar items are not acceptable in
your photo.
o If you normally wear prescription glasses, a hearing device or similar articles,
they may be worn for your photo.
o Dark glasses or non-prescription glasses with tinted lenses are not acceptable
unless you need them for medical reasons (a medical certificate may be
required)
o Glare on glasses is not acceptable in your photo. Glare can be avoided with a
slight downward tilt of the glasses or by removing the glasses or by turning off
the camera flash.

Photo Identification Card

1/17/2014

Photos copied or digitally scanned from drivers licenses or other official documents are not
acceptable. In addition, snapshots, magazine photos, low quality vending machine or mobile
phone photos, and full-length photographs are not acceptable.

Want to take the photo yourself?

While we recommend you use a professional passport photo service to ensure your photo
meets all the requirements, you may take the photo yourself. Hand-held self-portraits are not
acceptable. Photos must not be digitally enhanced or altered to change your appearance in any
way. Please use reliable references for guidance on taking your own photo. There are several
online software tools for this purpose. It is your responsibility to ensure the tool you use
produces a photo that meets AWS specifications.

Renewals/Recertification - Change of Appearance

If you cannot be identified from your current photo on file with AWS, you should submit a new
photo with your renewal or recertification application.
Examination results will NOT be released until we receive the 2 x 2 inch color passport-style
photograph. To avoid delays in receiving your examination results, please mail your photo to
the address listed below:
American Welding Society
Certification Department Photo Center
8669 NW 36 Street Suite 130
Miami, FL 33166-6672
We recommend using priority mail with tracking options.
For question or concerns, please call the Certification Department 800-443-9353, extension
273.

APPLICANT INSTRUCTIONS FOR EXAMINATION

A Test Supervisor will review the testing procedures during the general instructions period. Please read these instructions carefully. You
are required to show a valid drivers license or passport in order to gain entrance to the examination.
It is recommended you bring a battery powered NOISELESS calculator. Calculators designed for metric conversion are allowed. Feel free
to use the test booklet margins for any calculations you may require. All candidates taking an Open Book examination must each have
their own set of references to use for the exam. Sharing of reference materials is not allowed.
The following items are NOT permitted during any of the tests:
No scratch pads or loose sheets other than published codebook errata
No calculators or other devices that make noise
No calculators with memory/keyboard
No photographic or video devices
No cell phones can be turned on
No items may be taken out of the exam room, including cell phones
Before the start of each examination, you will be given an answer sheet and a sealed test booklet. Make certain you complete the answer
sheet according to the Test Supervisors instructions. It is extremely important you copy the AWS Form and the Test Code Book on your
answer sheet exactly as it appears on the front of your selected test booklet. Failure to do so will affect the automated scoring of your
answer sheet.
Each part of the exam will begin and end at the times designated by the Test Supervisor. When the Test Supervisor gives the signal to
begin, you should work as quickly as possible without being careless. Do not waste time on questions which you find too difficult. It is
suggested that you identify such questions in the test booklets, then go on to answer the remaining questions. If time permits, go back
and try to answer the troublesome questions. It is to your advantage to answer all questions or make an educated guess.
ALL answers must be marked on the scantron sheet to be scored. Be careful to mark your answer in the correct space for that question.
Do not mark two answers in one space. Be sure all responses are firmly recorded and all erasures are complete. Feedback can be
submitted during the designated exam time, via letter following the exam or by going to the AWS website www.aws.org/examfeedback
and filling out a feedback form. Feedback provided via the website or in writing.
Important directions for marking answers:
Use black lead pencil only (No. 2 or softer)
Do NOT use ink or ball-point pens
Make heavy black marks that fill the bar completely
Erase cleanly any answer you wish to change
Make no stray marks on the answer sheet
When turning in the used test booklet and answer sheet, you will be required to verify the following on each part of the exam: (1) all
instructions have been understood, (2) that no unauthorized help was given or received and (3) that you have witnessed the sealing of
the envelope containing your test booklet and answer sheet. After verifying these conditions, you are free to leave the exam room. In
consideration of those still testing, we require you to refrain from any conversation in or near the test room.
AWS will monitor the registration activity for the program you are registered to attend. If there is a low registration count 30 days from
the programs starting date, AWS has the right to cancel the event. Please keep this in mind when making your airline reservations.
You will receive your test results by U.S. mail. Be sure to notify the Certification Department of any address change. If you notify us in
writing, include your full name and member number. In an effort to protect the privacy of all applicants, AWS will not provide your test
score results by telephone. All fees must be paid in full and missing documentation received prior to receiving your test results.
If you have any questions regarding your account balance, please contact AWS Accounting Department at 1-800-443-9353, extension 240.
NON-MEMBER EXAM ATTENDEES: Your AWS membership will become active after the completion of the exam.

The VA Licensing & Certification Benefit Can Pay the Costs of an AWS Certification Test
If you're a veteran with G.I. Bill Benefits, and you're looking for a good job, or you want to
change jobs, or if you want to move ahead in your present job, licensing or certification may
hold the key for you!
What's the Licensing and Certification Benefit?
The new licensing and certification benefit allows VA (Department of Veterans Affairs) to pay
you, if you're eligible, for a test for a license or certification, such as some of those offered by
AWS. You can receive reimbursement for approved licensing or certification tests you take on or
after March 1, 2001. These tests must be specifically approved for the G.I. Bill.
Note: VA can pay only for the cost of the test and not other fees connected with obtaining a
certification.
Will This Benefit Really Be a Good Deal For Me?
In today's business and government climate, having a license or certification can open doors for
you. A license is required for most professions, and for jobs that are subject to state or other
government regulations. Certification is voluntary, but frequently sought after. That's because
getting a certification can help you get, keep, or advance in a job.
(By certification, we mean the certification you get by taking a specific test for a field of
employment, not a certificate you receive for completion of training. However, you can also use
your other VA benefits for many school courses needed to obtain a license or certification.)
In jobs from mechanics, installers, repairers to medical technicians to therapists to computer
network engineers, Web site developers, and many, many others, certification plays a key role.
And of course, certification is key to many fields in the welding professions.
How Much Can I Receive?
You can receive reimbursement of up to $2,000 per test but not more than the actual cost of the
test. You can receive benefits to retake a test you failed. The number of tests you can take is
unlimited, except that you can't receive benefits to retake a test you passed.
Note: Your total months of entitlement to VA education benefits will be reduced each time you
use your benefits for licensing and certification. To determine the charge to your entitlement, the
VA divides the cost of the test by your monthly benefit rate for full-time training. For example, if
your test costs $400, and $800 is your full-time rate, you'd use one-half month of entitlement
($400/$800).
Am I Eligible?
You may receive this benefit if you're eligible for:

The Montgomery G.I. Bill Active Duty (also called the MGIB or Chapter 30;
unfortunately this benefit isn't available for the MGIB for reservists), or
VEAP (also called Chapter 32), or
Dependents' Educational Assistance (also called DEA or Chapter 35)

To find out if you might be eligible under any of these programs, check the Internet site,
www.gibill.va.gov.

Reminder: You generally have 10 years after your discharge from active duty to use your
benefits.
How Do I Find Out if My Test Has Been Approved?
You can find the approved tests at the Internet site, www.gibill.va.gov, on the Licensing and
Certification page. If the test you're taking isn't on the approved list, the VA will ask the state
approving agency to see if it can be approved.
How Do I Apply For Benefits?
Get the ball rolling by taking the test and applying for benefits. Simply do the following:

Application for Licensing and Certification Testing Fee Reimbursement

Send a copy of your test results to the VA office that handles your education benefits.
Check the map on the Internet site at www.gibill.va.gov. Attacha note with the following
information:
o your request for reimbursement
o your name and Social Security number or VA claim number
o the name of the test you took and the date you took it
o name and address of the organization issuing the license or certificate (not
necessarily the organization that administered the test)
o cost of the test (NOTE: Registration fees, preparation guides, processing fees, etc.
will not be reimbursed).
o the following statement: "I authorize release of my test information to VA."
o if requested, the facility code for AWS is 4-6-0002-10.
If you've never previously filed a claim for VA education benefits, you'll also need to
submit an application for benefits. You can print either of the following forms from the
VA Internet site.
o If you're a veteran or on active duty, you need VA Form 22-1990.
o If you're an eligible child or spouse, you need VA Form 22-5490.
You can also complete and submit the VA Form 22-1990 on-line. Just go to
www.gibill.va.gov and click on Electronic Application.

Or call 1-888-GIBILL-1 (1-888-442-4551) and request the form.

Send the application form along with the other information above to the VA regional office that
processes your claim. The addresses are on the forms.
Who Can I Contact if I Have Questions?

If you have questions on the licensing and certification benefit, or on applying for benefits, you
can
Check the Internet site: www.gibill.va.gov. You'll find a link to the Licensing and Certification
page.
Send an e-mail inquiry to the VA Regional Processing Office near you by going to
www.gibill.va.gov and clicking on Ask a Question.
Call 1-888-GIBILL-1 (1-888-442-4551), or for the hearing-impaired, 1-800-829-4833. VA
phone lines are often very busy, especially when school enrollments are heavy. You may have
more success contacting them through the Internet.

RECOMMENDED PRESTUDY FOR

PREPARATION FOR CERTIFIED WELDING INSPECTOR/EDUCATOR EXAM COURSE
AT HOBART INSTITUTE OF WELDING TECHNOLOGY

If you are planning to take the CWI course and exam and you would like to study prior to the
course, you may consider:
1. Obtain a copy of the AWS QC1 Standard for AWS Certification of Welding Inspectors. This is
available free as a download from the American Welding Society website at
http://www.aws.org/certification/docs/QC1-2007.pdf. This is the standard for all AWS-CWIs.
Read it completely.
2. When you have selected the code you will use for the Part C Open Code Book part of the
exam, you should purchase that code book. This may be purchased from
http://www.welding.org/product-category/books/welding-codes-specifications/ or directly from
the publisher. Look how it is organized: the table of contents, the index. Learn how to find
information quickly and understand what each section covers. Bring this code book with you
to the class.
3. Obtain a copy of the AWS Part B Examination Book of Specifications. This is available free
as a download from the American Welding Society website at
http://www.aws.org/certification/docs/Book_of_Specs.pdf
Read it from cover-to-cover including the footnotes. This book of specifications is the standard
you will use for the Part B examination.
4. If you are experienced in welding but have limited experience in welding inspection, you may
choose to attend the Arc Welding Inspection (AWI520) at the Hobart Institute to get basic
inspection training. http://www.welding.org/students/continuing-education/technical-training/.
This course is not a prerequisite requirement for the CWI course, but can be very beneficial for
someone starting out in welding inspection.
5. If you cannot attend the Arc Welding Inspection, you may want to purchase the AWS
Certification Manual for Welding Inspectors. http://www.welding.org/product/certificationmanual-welding-inspectors/. It is for self-study. Read each section and answer the questions at
the end of each section.
6. If you lack welding process experience, you may want to take the 4-day Welding for the
Nonwelder course at Hobart Institute. http://www.welding.org/students/continuingeducation/technical-training/ . It provides welding process information and hands-on practice
with oxyacetylene welding, shielded metal arc, gas tungsten arc, gas metal arc and flux cored
arc welding processes.
7. You may take the online Welding Symbols Course http://www.welding.org/product/symbolsfor-welding/ on the Hobart Institute website. Also, the Visual Inspection Course is online at
www.welding.org which may be helpful to you.
