Abstract
Using case studies to develop theoretical arguments: the recent debate on comparative historical
research
The article presents a review o f the methodological debate on comparative historical research
in political science. It discusses the critique o f case study methods traditionally employed by
historical institutionalists, concerning the lack o f validity o f causal inferences and issues o f
selection bias. The article presents, on the other hand, the strategies advocated by researchers
within this methodological tradition as a means o f increasing the explanatory power o f small
N comparisons and case studies. In particular, it discusses the application o f techniques o f
process-tracing in the generation and testing o f theoretical arguments based on case study
research.
Keywords: Case studies; Comparative methodology; Process tracing; Historical institutionalism.
