Complete the following Word Problems. Show your work and


write your answer in a sentence draw a picture when
necessary. TEN (10) these problems are to be handed in by
Wednesday, December 10th!
1. Betty is going to cover the top of her desk with plastic
laminate and put a trim around the outside edges. The
trim can be bought in 1cm units at $.23/cm and the
laminate, cut to the size required, can be bought for
$8.50/cm2. What will it cost to laminate her desk and put
trim around it if her rectangular desk measures 60cm x
40cm.?

The community of Sackville is building a new
recreational field and wants to plant grass and put a fence
around it. Grass seed costs $0.03/m and fencing costs
$0.65/m. How much will it cost to seed and fence the 75m by
40m field?
3.A tablecloth, 220cm by 440cm, is to be trimmed with lace.
The lace costs $0.87/m. What is the cost of the lace
required?
4. A metal garage door, 3.1m by 2.9m, contains a window 2.0m
by 0.4m. What is the area of the metal in the door?
5. The dimensions of the O'Reilly's house and lot are shown
on the plan on the board.

If the grass seed costs $0.05/m2, how much will it cost
to seed their lot?

8. A rectangular plot, 21m by 14m, is to be turned into a
rectangular flower bed with a grass border around its
outside edge. The grass border is to be 2m wide. What is the
area of the flower bed? What is the area of the grass
border?
9. The diagram shows one wall of a house. The door is 2.0m
by 1.2m, the large window 2.1m by 1.5m, and the small window
1.7m by 0.9m. Insulation costs $2.79/m2. What is the cost
for insulation for this wall?
10. An L-shaped living room has the dimensions shown (15m
long, 12m wide). The carpeting chosen for it costs
$14.95/m2. What is the cost of carpeting the room?
11. A rectangular prism measures 12cm long, 5cm wide, and
8cm high. What is its surface area?
12. A rectangular prism measures 14cm long, 6cm wide, and
9cm high. You need to go out and buy colored paper to cover
all the faces. If the paper costs $0.05/cm2, how much is
going to cost you to cover all the faces?
13. A piece of Bristol board is 45cm by 90cm. To remove
frayed edges, a border 2cm wide id cut off all around. What
is the new area of the Bristol board?
14. John has been given $200.00 to buy the paint and to
paint the front of their house. The front of the house is
22m by 4.3m, and has a window that is 1.2m by 1.3m and a
door that is 2m by 1.4m. If the paint costs $1.15/m2, how
much money will he have left for himself?

15. One liter of sealer will cover 3m2 of driveway. How many
5L cans of sealer are needed to seal a surface that is 6.2m
by 15.3m?
16. A picture of Peggy's Cove measures 21cm by 32cm. It is
to be framed with a 4cm wide frame. What is the area of the
picture, the picture and frame, just the frame.
17. A rectangular house with a flat roof measures 31m long,
12m wide, and 9m high. The front of the house has a door
2.1m by 1.3m, and two identical windows 1.7m by 0.8m. The
back of the house has a door 1.9m by 1.1m, a large window
2.1m by 1.3m and a small window 0.8m by 0.8m. Each side of
the house has a small window 0.5m by 0.6m. If it costs
$0.75/m to paint, how much will it cost to paint the entire
outside of the house?
18. Bill has built a sandbox for his daughter. The
dimensions of the box are 220cm long, 315cm wide and 15 cm
tall. He wants to paint the outside and the bottom of the
box and fill it with sand. If the paint costs $0.23/cm2, and
sand costs $0.11/cm3, how much money does he need?
19. A house, 9.5m long, 6.5m wide, and 4.5m high is to be
fitted with one door and 4 windows, and then insulated. The
cost of the insulation is $1.75/m2. How big must the doors
and windows be for the contractor to spend between $227.00
to $240.00 to insulate the four walls?
20. A rectangular bin measuring 1.75m by 1.25m by 2.65m is
filled with soft coal. If 1m3 of soft coal has a mass of
800kg, how many tonnes are there in the bin? (Hint: 1000kg =
1 tonne)
21. A rectangular pond is 3.3m long, and 22.2m wide. Ice
forms on it to a thickness of 5.5cm. If 1cm3 of ice has a
mass of 0.92g, what is the mass of the ice on the pond to
the nearest kilogram?

22. The label on a 4L can of paint says that the contents


will cover an area of 40m2. How many cans are needed to
paint the floor and ceiling of a room 7.5m long, 5.0m wide,
and 2.5m tall?
23. This triangular trough is 350cm long, 25cm wide at the
top, and 60cm deep. How much water will it hold? Give your
answer in litres.
24. A standard door is 200cm by 70cm. How much weather
striping is needed to seal the door? If the door is 3.5cm
thick, how much insulation would be in the door?
25. A circular drum that has a diameter of 1.75m and a
height of 2.6m, is 85% full of fertilizer. If one cm3 of
fertilizer costs $2.85, what is the value of the fertilizer
in the drum?
26. A circular pool has a diameter of 14m and a height of
2.5m. If each cm3 of water requires 5mls of cleaning
solution, and a litre of solution costs $1.85, how much is
it going to cost to clean the pool three times a year?
27. A triangular prism is to be filled with cement. If the
base of the triangle is 60cm, the height of the triangle
is 70 cm, and the height of the prism is 3.5m, how much
cement is needed to fill the prism? If cement costs
$3.25/cm3, what is the cost to fill the prism with
cement?
28. A formula for the approximate volume of a sphere is
4/3r3pi where r is the radius of the sphere.
