Chipola Softball celebrates Award-Winning Year

The Chipola Lady Indians softball team is celebrating another award-winning year with a state
championship, a runner-up finish in the national tournament and numerous awards.
As the reigning 2015 NJCAA National Champion, the Lady Indians came close to winning a second
straight national title, but fell to Butler (4-2) in the title game of the national tournament on May 21.
Four Lady Indians were named to the National All-Tournament team: pitcher Ilona Andringa, third
baseman Ashley Morris, catcher Madison Ragan and outfielder Gabriela Santos.
Chipola made it to the NJCAA title game with a 9-7 come-from-behind win over Salt Lake. The
Lady Indians also recorded wins over: Indian Hills (8-1), Wallace State (12-2) and Salt Lake (6-5).
Chipola moved into the consolation bracket following a 10-0 loss to Butler.
Chipola played in the title game of the NJCAA championship for a third straight year. The Lady
Indians recorded a 49-15 mark with three win streaks or seven or more games. Chipola won the national
championship in 2015 and in 2007.
Chipola captured a second straight FCSAA State Championship with a 6-2 win over Florida
SouthWestern in the title game on May 1. Chipola outfielder Dana Edmundson of Panama City was
named FCSAA Tournament MVP. Six players were named to the FCSAA All-Tournament Team:
infielders: Brianna Surrento and Ashley Morris; outfielders: Dana Edmundson and Gabriella Santos;
Designated Player: Madison Ragan; and Pitcher: Ilona Andringa.
Lady Indians Coach Belinda Hendrix was named the Florida state coach of the year for the fifth time in 12 years at Chipola.
She also picked up her 500th win this season. Hendrix and her Associate
Head Coach and husband Jimmy Hendrix lead the team along with
Assistant Coach Kelly Brookins. The entire Chipola coaching staff
was named the top staff in the South Region by the National Fastpitch
Coaches Association (NFCA).
On June 1, two Lady Indians were named to the 2016 NJCAA Division
I Softball All-American team. Sophomore pitcher Ilona Andringa was
named to the All-American Second team. Andringa (34-4) finished the
season with a 1.24 ERA. She pitched 202 strikeouts in 204 innings and
held opponents to a .198 batting average.
Sophomore outfielder Gabriela (Bibi) Santos was selected for the All-American Third team. Santos hit .431 on the year with
61 RBI, 4 homeruns, 20 doubles and 14 stolen bases. She led the team with 195 plate appearances and a .656 slugging percentage.
Santos committed only one error on the year to finish with a .982 fielding percentage.
Eight Lady Indians were named to the Panhandle All-Conference team. Ilona Andringa was Conference Pitcher of the Year.
Chipolas first team All-Conference selections included: PitcherIlona Andringa; InfielderNalleli Lopez; OutfieldersGabrielle
Santos, Dana Edmundson and Pitcher/DPMadison Ragan. Second team selections included: InfieldersBrianna Surrento and
Ashley Morris. Courtney Davis was an Honorable Mention infielder.

Chipola hosts STEM Challenge

Chipola was the host site of a Summer STEM Challenge sponsored by the
Panhandle Area Educational Consortium in partnership with Embry-Riddle
Aeronautical University. Here, Chipola science professor Dr. Jeff Bodart
works with Graceville High School junior Denzeal Boyd. Area high school
students got a chance to learn about drones during three-day event.
Participants used iPads, computers, and phones to create a map to operate
drones. Organizers say the camp helped teach problem solving skills.

Chipola finishes second at State


The Chipola Indians (43-16) finished second
in FCSAA State Tournament, falling to State
Champion Santa Fe, 6-4, in the title game on May
21.
Five Chipola players were named to the AllTournament team: Keiner Colmenarez, Tyler
Osik, Wood Myers, Reynaldo
Rivera and Bowden Francis.
During the tournament, Chipola scored wins
over St. Pete (10-2) on May 16; St. Johns River
(13-5) on May 18; Santa Fe (6-2) on May 19; and
over Gulf Coast (9-1) on May 20. Chipolas only
losses of the tournament were to Santa Fe (109) on May 18 and (6-4) in the championship.
The Indians started with a 10-2
win over St. Petersburg in the opening
round, May 16. Bowden Francis
earned the win for Chipola. Reynaldo Rivera was
3 for 4. Tyler Osik was 3 for 3. Miguel Rojas was
1 for 2. Tekwaan White was 2 for 4.
The Indians lost a heartbreaker to Santa Fe,
10-9, on May 18. Chipola scored 9 runs on 10
hits. Santa Fe had 10 runs on 11 hits. Chipolas
Jay Estes was 4 for 6. Woody Myers was 2 for 3.
Reynaldo Rivera was 2 for 4. Keiner Colmenarez
was 2 for 3.

The Chipola Womens Cross Country team has


cholarships available for the Fall 2016 semester.
Returning members of the team, Lydia Weideman,
Jayde Smelcer, Conner Melvin and Amber Raisebeck are
currently working out on Tuesday and Thursday mornings
from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the college pool. They will
be joined by newcomer Nichole Morris of Lake City.
Cross Country is a Fall sport which begins August 1 and
ends in November.The season opens Aug. 26 inTallahassee.

Chipola scored a 6-2 win
over Santa Fe on May 19. Landon
Faulkner picked up the win with 10
strikeouts in 7 innings. Alex Shauger
got the save. Jose Caballero was 3 for 5
with a homerun. Myers was 2 for 5 with
a homerun.
Chipola eliminated Gulf Coast
with a 9-1 win on May 20. Brady
Acker earned the win with a
complete 8 inning game on the
run rule. Osik was 4 for 4 to lead
the Indians. Cooley was 3 for 4 with a double.
Colmenarez was 2 for 4. Estes was 1 for 4 with a
double.
Coach Jeff Johnson is in his 19th season at the
helm of the Indians program. His teams have
made the State Tournament 15 straight years with
eight appearances in the title game. Chipola has
made three trips to the National Tournament in the
last seven years including a 2007 national title.

Fall Registration dates

Chipola will hold registration for Fall 2016


classes for returning students July 5-8 and 1114. New student application deadline for the
Fall Semester is Aug. 3. Online registration is
available for students who qualify.
The most important deadline may be July
27, the deadline to apply for Federal Financial
Aid to cover Fall tuition and fees. Students
must complete the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA) application and submit required documents to the Chipola Financial Aid
Office by July 27. Those who miss the deadline will be required to pay tuition and fees up front,
but may be reimbursed once financial aid is awarded. For information, call the Federal Student

Applications for Admission are available in the Admissions Office located in the Student
Service Building or online at www.chipola.edu. There are several steps in the application process:
(1) complete the college Admission Application available online or call 718-2311 for assistance;
(2) request a final high school transcript be sent to Admission and Records Office; and (3) take the
College Placement Test (non-exempt students); call 718-2284 for assistance.
Chipola offers Bachelors Degrees, the Associate in Arts Degree, the Associate in Science
Degree and Workforce Development programs. The schedule of classes is available at www.

Chipola accepting applications for B.S. Degree Programs

Chipola is now accepting applications for each of the colleges 10 bachelors degrees programs.
New student application deadline for the Fall Semester is Aug. 3.
Chipolas tuition is $115 per semester hour for upper division courses compared to $215 per hour at
nearby universities. Chipola also offers in-state tuition for Alabama and Georgia residents.
Chipola offers seven different bachelors degrees in the teaching field: Elementary Education,
Exceptional Student Education, English Education, Middle School Mathematics, Secondary
Mathematics, Middle School Science and Secondary Science (Biology). For information, contact

Chipola offers the B.S. in Business Administration with majors in Accounting or Management.
Both programs have excellent placement rates. Most of the courses are offered in the evening and

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing program offers all upper division classes on-line.
Applicants must have an AS degree in Nursing from an accredited institution or have completed
the AA degree with all prerequisites from a Florida public institution. Applicants must be licensed
RNs in (Florida, Alabama, or Georgia) with an overall 2.5 minimum GPA. Contact Dr. Karen
