CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the methods of research used, the
population frame and sample size, respondents and subjects of the
study, data gathering instruments, validation of the instruments,
data gathering procedures and statistical treatment of data.

Method of Research Used

This study utilized the descriptive method of research. As
widely accepted, the descriptive method of research is a factfinding study that involves adequate and accurate interpretation
of findings. Relatively, the method is appropriate to this study
since it aims to describe the solid waste dillema: municipal
liability, household hazardous waste management. The technique
that was used under descriptive method is the normative survey
approach

and

evaluation,

which

is

opinions according to respondents that can represent a whole

population. The survey is appropriate in this study because it
enables the researcher in formulation of generalizations. We use
the type of questionnaire survey in the study and collects data
from the respondents based on their experience.

Population Frame and Sample Size

Parahoo (1997:218) defines population as the total number of
units from which data can
be

collected,

such

as

individuals,

or

organization. Burns and Grove

2003:213) describe population as all the elements that meet the
criteria for inclusion in a
study. Burns and Grove (2003: 234) define eligibility criteria as
a list of characteristics that are required for the membership
in the target population.
The criteria for inclusion in this study were:

San Isidro, Nueva Ecija Residence

Respondents and Subjects of the Study

The respondents of this study have a total of 50 selected
people in San Isidro, Nueva Ecija

Data Gathering Instruments

According to Parahoo (1997:52, 325), a research instrument
is a tool used to collect data. An instrument is a tool designed
to measure knowledge attitude and skills. Data were collected

questionnaire was structured using the Likert format with a fivepoint response scale. A Likert Scale is a rating scale that
requires the subject to indicate his or her degree of agreement
or disagreement to a statement. In this type of questionnaire,
the respondents were given five response choices. These options
served as the quantification of the participants' agreement or
disagreement on each question item. Below are the designated

Reliability and Validity of the Study

The reliability and validity of this research is based on
the survey questionnaire produced by the researcher and answer
by the respondents. The researcher works hard to get details to
answer the problems to have an accurate and reliable research.

Statistical Treatment of Data

After having retrieved the accomplished questionnaire-checklists
the researcher the researcher compiled, the researcher compiled,
tabulated, and tallied the data. They used the percentage method
in computing the data and give the result of the survey.
