The primary goal of the IAI has been to develop an integrated object-based
building-data model containing information aboutall aspects of a building
throughout its lifecyle, which can be used to support interoperability among
discipline-specific applications . This integrated model is called IFC (Industry
Foundation Classes) and is currently in its third release--2x.

Case

At the same time, it is important not to burden the IFC with over-expectations of being
the be-all and end-all of interoperability in the building industry. There are other
methods ofdata integration that allow individual applications to communicate with
each other, such as APIs (Application Programming Interface), other data-oriented
export formats such as ODBC, XML for Internet-based applications , and so on. The
IFC mightnot be the best interoperability solution under all circumstances , and
applications mightstill need to develop direct links to some others formore efficient
communication and tighter integration. Also, seamless integration of a suite of
commercial applications based on the IFC formathas not yet been demonstrated,
except for carefullymodeled test projects , indicating that the effort hasn't yet reached
the point where it is ready for mass consumption. However, it is definitely something
to watch out for because once it works fully as envisioned, its integration capabilities
and collaborative benefits can go a long way towards eliminating the inefficiencies
and waste in the building industry.

State of the AEC industry: BIM Implementation slow, but inevitable
H.Edward Goldberg
The GSA and its BIM Mandate
In December 2003, the GSA (General Services Administration; www.gsa.gov) issued
internal guidelines to its regional staff stressing the need for on-time, under-budget
project deliveries in the capital construction program. It determined that new and
emerging technologies such as 3D/4D and BIM have the potential to dramatically
improve the outcome of projects and improve customer satisfaction.
As a result, earilier this year GSA/PBS solicited information on the use of IFC-based BIM
technology from all firms in the design, construction, facilitymanagement and real
property industries. According to GSA/PBS, the information will be "used to assist the
governmentin establishing potential sources in the marketplace with knowledge and
experience in the use and practices of this state-of-the-art technology."
GSA has indicated that, beginning in July, the delivery of IFC-based BIM will be required
for the preliminary design phaseof all new fiscal year 2006 projects .
Introduction
Building information modeling is Autodesks strategy for the application of information
technology to the building industry. Building information modeling solutions have three
characteristics:
(1) They create and operate on digital databases for collaboration.
(2) They manage change throughout those databases so that a change to any part of the
database is coordinated in all other parts.
(3) They capture and preserve information for reuse by additional industry-specific applications.
The application of building information modeling solutions results in higher quality work, greater
speed and productivity, and lower costs for building industry professionals in the design,
construction, and operation of buildings.
This paper discusseshow the use of information technology in the industry has led to the idea of
building information modeling and the characteristics and benefits of building information
modeling solutions.
