Lesson #1 : Quadratic Equations

Defining Quadratic Equation
Solving Quadratic Equations of the form
ax2+bx=0
Solving Quadratic Equations of the form
ax2+bx+c=0
Quadratic Equations is an equation that can be written as the product of two
binomials in the form ax2+bx=0 and ax2+bx+c=0 , where a, b , and c are real
numbers and a0.
A quadratic equation of this form ax2+bx=0 and ax2+bx+c=0 are
said to be in standard form.

A quadratic equation is also called a second degree equation in one variable.

Some examples of Quadratic Equations :

Quadratic Equations
Standard Form
2
x 5x +6 = 0
x2 -5x + 6 = 0
2
2x +x = 7
2x2 + x -7 = 0
4x2 = 9
4x2 -9 = 0
x2 = x
x2 x = 0

Values of a,b, and c

a=1 , b = -5 ,and c = 6
a=2 , b=1, and c = -7
a = 4 , b = 0 , and c = -9
a = 1 , b = -1, and c = 0

Lets Try :
Determine which of these equations are quadratic equations in one variable. If quadratic,
write each equations in standard form.
____________________ 1. (x+3) +8 = 0
= 3x

_________________ 6. x2 + 10

____________________ 2. 2(x+3)2 = 0

_________________ 7. x3 2x + 5 = 0

____________________ 3. 0 = x(x+3)(x-5)

_________________ 8. (x-1)2 = 0

____________________ 4. (x+1) (x 2 )= 0
=0

_________________ 9. 9x/7 + 7x 1

____________________ 5. 2x4 + x -1 = 0
5 -6 = 0

_________________ 10. x3 + 2 /

The easiest method for solving many quadratic equations, if applicable, is by

factoring which is based on the zero-factor property.
Solving Quadratic Equations by Factoring :
1. Write the equation in standard form, with the right member zero.
2. Factor the left member of the equation.
3. Set each factor equal to zero.

4. Solve the resulting first degree equations.

5. Check if the answers are corect by substituting them to the variable in the original
equation.

A. The following quadratic equations can be solved by factoring :

1. x2 -6x = -8
Solution: Make sure one side of the equation is O before applying the zero-product
property
x2 -6x + 8 = 0
: transform into a standard form
(x -4 ) ( x 2 ) = 0
: factor the left side
x-4 = 0 or
x-2 = 0 : zero product property
x=4
x=2
: solve for x
Therefore the roots are 4 and 2
2. ( x + 2 )2 = 9
Solutions :
x2 + 4x + 4 = 9
: square the binomial
2
x +4x 5 = 0
: transform into standard form
(x1)(x+5)=0
: factor the left side
x 1 = 0 or
x + 5 = 0 : zero product property
x=1
x = - 5 : solve for x
Therefore the roots are 1 and -5

2
3.
8 y - 4 y 1= 0
Solution:

y2 -

1
4

y -1 = 0

y2 - 2y 8 = 0
: multiply both sides by the LCD 8,
(y4)(y+2)=0
: factor the left side
y 4 = 0 or y + 2 = 0 : zero product property
y=4
y = -2
: solve for x
Therefore the roots are 4 and -2
4. The sum of two numbers is 19. The sum of the squares of the numbers is 193. Find
the two numbers.
Solution: Let x = one of the numbers
19 x = the other number
x2 + ( 19 x )2 = sum of the squares of the two numbers
x2 + ( 19 x )2 = 193
sum of the squares of two numbers
2
2
x + 361 38x + x = 193
square of binomials
2
2x 38x + 168 = 0
combine like terms
2
x 19x + 84 = 0
divide by 2
( x 7 ) ( x 12 ) = 0
factor
x7=0
or
x 12 = 0
zero property
x=7
or
x = 12
Final Answer : The numbers are 7 and 12.
5. Cardboard boxes are required to be 3 inches deep, twice as long as they are wide, and
each must have a volume of 150 in3. What should be the dimensions of the original
pieces of cardboard from which the boxes are made?
Solution :
Let x = the length of the original piece of cardboard in inches
x 6 = the length reduce by 6 inches / new length
x6
= new width
2

V = 150 in3
V = lwh

(x - 6)(x 6) = 100
x -12x + 36 = 100
2

150 = ( x 6 )(

x6
2

)(3)

x2-12x 64 = 0

3(x-6)(x-6) = 300

( x 16 ) ( x + 4 ) = 0
x16 = 0
or x+4 = 0
x = 16 or x = -4
Final Answer : The original length is 16 in. and the original width is 11 in.
