Lesson 2: Cite the Site

Lesson Overview: In this lesson students


will learn how to locate the necessary
bibliographic information need to correctly
cite a web site.
Lesson Objective: Given a web site and a
web site citation form, students will
accurately record all of the necessary
bibliographic information with 90%
accuracy.

Materials Needed
1. Interactive white board
2. Document Camera
3. Instructor Laptop
4. 1:1 computer access for students
(Chromebook)
5. Pencils for students
6. Google Slides presentation
7. Web Site Citation Form (60 copies)
8. Kahoot! quiz

Time: 60 minutes
Step 1: Pre-instructional Activities (10 minutes)
Students will group themselves according to the web site that they evaluated for
homework from lesson 1. Students will share/compare their responses in order to
determine if the web site they evaluated would be a good one to use for research. They
will share their findings and evidence with the class.
Web site evaluation forms will be collected by the instructor for further review.
Step 2: Content Presentation (15 minutes)
Instructor will identify the purpose of the lesson by displaying the initial slide from the
lesson flip chart. Vocabulary words (web site, web page, publisher, access) will be listed
on the next slide. The words will be introduced at this time, but better illustrated and
defined during modeling.
Instructor will model with a live web site how to locate all of the information necessary
to accurately cite a web site.
o This includes:
Name of web site
Publisher of web site
Most recent date of access (usually today)
Date of e-publication (This can also be the copyright date. If a date range
is given, say 2011-2014 the student should record the earlier date. If the
web site says, last updated, that information would be used.
URL
Names of the contributors/authors (This is not always provided)
Web page or article title
During this portion of the lesson the instructor should solicit responses from the students and
provide opportunities for them to turn and talk in order to increase student engagement.
Step 3: Learner Participation (10 minutes)
Students will remain seated in table groups. Each student will open their Chromebook
and access the Kahoot Quiz.
Students will take the quiz. Results will be discussed and any necessary clarification will
be provided by the instructor.

The Kahoot Quiz will contain screen shots of each part of a web site that the students are
working to identify. For example, if the image on the Kahoot Quiz has the URL
highlighted, the students select the correct response from the multiple choice answers on
the quiz.

Example:

The use of a Kahoot quiz will better meet the needs of ELL and LC students who may
know the correct answer, but may be unable to spell the response.
Step 4: Assessment (15 minutes)
As instructor passes out web site citation forms (Appendix C), students who would like
additional support are moving to one table. Other students are moving to their computers.
They will complete the web site citation form using the web site that they evaluated
during the homework for lesson 1. This is a purposeful instructional decision. The
students need to be focused on locating the necessary bibliographic information quickly
and efficiently. If they have already looked at the web site, they will be less distracted by
the content and more likely to stick to the task at hand.
Students in the intervention group may work together with guidance from the instructor
to complete the task.
Step 5: Follow-through Activities (10 minutes)
As students complete the independent activity, they may begin their homework that is to
locate a web site on their own and record the correct bibliographic information.
At the closing of the lesson, the instructor should bring the whole class back together to
review the purpose of the lesson and ensure there are no additional questions.
Partners will verify that each student has recorded the assignment in their planner and
filed a blank web site citation form in their binders.
