Campus View Manual

GENERAL
CampusView is a web based monitoring system for Elevators, Moving Walks and
Escalators. The application runs in an Internet browser on any PC. The application can
be accessed through the Internet and can link multiple buildings together using the
Internet or a Wide Area Network (WAN). The Campus View application extends the
REMON-G2 capabilities to a buildings operations forum. The application monitors real
time status of elevators and escalators.
CampusView will fit the needs for Fire Control, Security Control, and Building
Management Departments. A secondary use would be for in-house elevator service
departments or maintenance companies. CampusView displays a quick overview to
highlight problem areas in monitored buildings. Command and Control functions for the
monitored equipment can be accessed through hyperlinks into the full REMON-G2
application running in a machine room or through remote control of an OEM command
and control system running on a MS Windows computer.

Campus View Manual

Using CampusView

The Campus View application is a Buildings Operations tool for monitoring the buildings
elevators, escalators, moving walks and possibly passenger boarding bridges at airports.
The application consists of three screens, CampusView map, Area View, and Single
Group view. The installation at DFW airport Terminal D is shown below.

2.1

System Start-up

The system starts automatically when the computer boots up. Any units transmitting on
the network will be immediately entered into the database and updated on the screen.

2.2

System Shut-down

The system will shut down with a graceful shut down of Microsoft Windows. Click Start
then Shut Down and click OK.

2.3

System Login

The web server requires authentication to access the web pages. Users and access are
administrated by the Membership Administrator page.

Area Screen

Figure 6 Area Screen

Selecting a unit on the Map Screen leads to a detailed view of a section of the map. This
screen is called the Area Screen. This screen displays the logical groups of escalators
and elevators. Detailed information is given on this screen for each device. The
information includes, direction of travel, elevator position (bottom left corner), door
status, bottom and top landing floors for escalators, floor location for moving walks and
color status of the unit.

The second partition offers special commands: Search for a device, Campus Alarms and
Configuration, Global Alerts, and Legend.
The third partition is specific to the Area View and contains a Sort button for changing
the display order of the devices by their Global ID, Status Type or Device Type. The
next button is a slider to change the scale of the devices.
The fourth partition contains a button to jump to the Management Console and an About
button to view data relating to the current release of CampusView.

while Service Types are contained within the bounds of a status, but provide the exact
mode of operation of the device using a descriptive title and an icon.

CampusView Server Application Architecture

The CampusView application consists of the following four parts, UDP packet decoder,
MS SQL Server Database, MS .NET Web Server, and the Macromedia Flash movie.

Figure 24 CampusView Application Components

The four parts will be installed on a Server running the CampusView Server Application.
A CampusView client is able to run the CampusView Flash Movie and request remote
XML data over the network to a CampusView Server. The default web page on each
CampusView server will serve up the movie in a web page to a remote user.

3.1

CampusView Decode Application - CVDAS

The campus view server(s) will simply process all CampusView packets received
on the network. The packets are UDP packets varying in length from 28 bytes for
dynamic car data to 256 bytes for static information like building name and unit
name. The static packets are sent at power up and once every 15 minutes using
port 7366. The dynamic packets are sent on change of status, e.g. when an
elevator moves. If no change of status occurs within two minutes of the last
packet sent, a dynamic packet is sent to the server as an I am alive signal. The
packets are validated and then stored in a Microsoft SQL Server database on the
same machine. The application runs as an Operating System Service under
Windows XP Professional.
On private networks a broadcast UDP packet is used. For WAN, Wide Area
Networks, and Internet compatibility a second option exists for UDP Unicast. This
option is well suited for networks with routing including the Internet. This option
requires close coordination with the buildings IT department.

3.2

Microsoft SQL Server Database

The database will consist of one table storing the current state of each device on
the network and one table used to lookup job information such as job name,
customer job id and possibly other job static information. Tables also exist for
entering Notification Lists and decoding of Service Types. The Database server
can also be configured to use replication and subscriptions to merge server data
from several geographically dispersed CampusView servers. The SQL Server
database uses triggers on change of service type to send email notifications to
users listed in the notification list table.

Microsoft IIS Web Server

The web server presents data to each local CampusView application. Also, the
default web page runs the CampusView application in a browser to clients on the
network. The SMTP Virtual Server included in the Windows IIS application is
used to send email notifications over the Internet.

3.4

Flash User Interface Application

The Campus View application is a Rich Internet Application (RIA) that is custom
configured on a per job basis. The application is constantly running Live Data
from a REMON-G2 database.

The communications architecture is designed for to eliminate any single points of failure.
A multitude of devices, escalators & elevators, will be communicating to the
CampusView application(s) using UDP broadcast packets. The devices will transmit a
state refresh packet every five seconds. Upon a state change the device will transmit its
new state and not wait for the refresh cycle. If the CampusView application does not
receive a refresh packet after two refresh cycles, the application will show the device in a
loss of communications state.
