installation. Product specific requirements are contained
herein; Section 15501, General Provisions for Heating,

Requirements of Regulatory Agencies:


1.

Fans shall be licensed to bear the AMCA seal.

2.

All electrical components shall be UL listed.

B.

All appliances regulated by the New York City Construction


Codes shall be listed and labeled (reference Sections
MC 301.4 and MC 301.6 of the 2014 NYC Mechanical Code).
Testing of material shall be in accordance with Section
28-113 of the NYC Administrative Code (reference Section
MC 301.5).
Whenever the NYC Construction Codes or the
Rules of the Department of Buildings requires that material
be listed or labeled and material proposed to be used is
not so listed or labeled, the use of such material shall be
subject to prior approval by the Commissioner (Office of
Technical Certification and Research OTCR) and such
material shall be used only to the extent set forth in such
approval. Materials that were previously approved by the
Board of Standards and Appeal (BSA) or by the Department
(MEA) before the effective date of the NYC Construction
Codes may continue to be used, but only to the extent set
forth in such approval, and only if such approval is not
specifically amended or repealed by the Commissioner.

C.

All work shall be in accordance with the NYC Construction


Codes and NYC Electrical Code.

MAINTENANCE MATERIALS
A.

Maintenance materials: Furnish to the Authority one pound


of the recommended lubricant or the equivalent number of
cartridges for each fan and one lubrication gun and/or
grease gun of the proper type for use with the cartridges
for the entire project.
Furnish spare set of belts for
each belt driven fan.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01

AXIAL FLOW FANS - GENERAL


A.

Design Criteria: Design fans for installation directly in


ductwork. Direct driven units shall be suitable for

operation with 110F air and belt driven units with 175F
air. Per ASHRAE 90.1-2010 as modified by Appendix A of the
2014 NYCECC and 2014 NYCECC, systems shall be equipped with
Class 1 motorized dampers (with maximum leakage of 4 cfm/SF
at 1.0 w.c. when tested in accordance with AMCA 500D) that
will automatically shut when the systems or spaces served
are not in use. Gravity (non-motorized) exhaust or relief
dampers are acceptable in buildings less than three stories
in height. Gravity (non-motorized) dampers are acceptable
in systems with a design exhaust capacity of 300 cfm or
less. Gravity dampers shall have a maximum leakage rate of
20 cfm/SF at 1.0 w.c. when tested in accordance with AMCA
500D.
Gravity dampers smaller than 24 inches in either
dimension shall be permitted to have a leakage of 40 cfm/SF
at 1.0 w.c. when tested in accordance with AMCA 500D.
Provide fans with the damper types as shown on the
Drawings. Provide high energy efficient motors that meet
the requirements of the 2014 New York City Energy
Conservation Code and ASHRAE 90.1-2010 as modified by
Appendix A of the 2014 NYCECC.

B.

Fan Housings: Fabricate housings from heavy gage sheet all


welded
construction,
properly
reinforced
to
prevent
breathing and vibration at all fan speeds. Provide housing
and angle collars, with drilled or punched holes at
uniform intervals, extending beyond the duct housing to
provide continuous duct connections. Provide heavy gage
support legs or suspension angle supports, welded to
housing, all as required by the particular application.

C.

Finish: Provide all exposed surfaces of fans with a factory


applied corrosion resistant finish (Refer to Section
09900: Painting).

D.

Fans Used in Smoke Control


1.

Per Section MC 513.10 equipment utilized in Smoke


Control systems such as fans and automatic dampers
shall be suitable for their intended use, suitable for
the probable exposure temperatures and shall be as
approved by the Commissioner. Fans shall be rated and
certified by the manufacturer for the probable
temperature rise to which the components will be
exposed. This temperature rise is _______. Per
Section BC 909.4.6 of the 2014 NYC Building Code, all
portions of active smoke control systems shall be
capable of continued operation after detection of the
fire event for not less than 20 minutes or 1.5 times

the calculated egress time, whichever is more.

2.02

2.

Per Section BC 909.10.6, Seismic Requirements, smoke


control systems covered by Section BC 909 are life
safety systems and are required to function after an
earthquake. Such smoke control systems shall be
seismically designed in accordance with Section BC
1613 and Section 13.2.2 of ASCE 7-10. The component
importance factor, Ip, shall be taken as 1.5 in
accordance with ASCE 7-10, Section 13.1.3. The smoke
control system includes all components required for
its operation.
Smoke control systems in structures
classified in Seismic Design Categories A or B shall
have a component importance factor, Ip, of 1.0.

In addition (per Section MC 513.10.5 for smoke control


fans), belt-driven fans shall have 1.5 times the
number of belts required for the design duty with the
minimum number of belts being two. Motors driving fans
shall not be operating beyond their nameplate
horsepower (kilowatts) as determined from measurement
of actual current draw. Motors driving fans shall have
a minimum service factor of 1.15.

TUBEAXIAL FANS
A.

Direct Driven: Fan assembly and electric motor shall be


direct connected, supported from and totally located
within the fan housing. Propeller shall be of the air foil
type fabricated of cast aluminum. Motor mounts shall be
continuously welded to duct housing. Provide access panel
in fan housing for servicing fan and motor assembly.
Provide an integral electrical terminal box on the
exterior of the fan housing, with a wiring tube extending
to the electrical Work.

B.

V-Belt Driven: Fan assembly shall be located within the fan


housing and shall be V-belt driven by an electric motor,
supported on an adjustable motor base, welded to the
exterior of the housing.
Provide solid steel fan drive
shaft, accurately turned and polished, mounted on heavy
duty lubricated ball bearings. Isolate bearings and drive
from air stream. Run V-belt drive between fan assembly and
motor, in a rigid airtight sheet metal enclosure. Provide
all moving parts of fan assembly with vibration isolation
and install motor on resilient mounts. Extend fan assembly
grease fittings to exterior of housing.

VANEAXIAL FANS
A.

Direct Driven: Fan assembly and electric motor shall be


direct connected and totally located within the outer drum
housing. The electric motor shall be mounted on a motor
base, which shall be welded to the inner surface of a
heavy gage tubular metal inner shell. Provide heavy gage
guide vanes on the discharge side of the propeller
continuously welded to the outer surface of the inner
shell and the inner surface of the outer fan housing,
thereby acting as supports for the inner shell, motor and
fan assembly. Provide an integral electrical terminal box
on the exterior of the fan housing, with a wiring tube
extending to the electric motor.

B.

V-Belt Driven: Fan assembly shall be located within the fan


housing and shall be V-belt driven by an electric motor,
supported on an adjustable motor base, welded to the
exterior of the housing. Provide solid steel fan drive
shaft, accurately turned and polished, mounted on heavy
duty lubricated ball bearings. Install fan assembly in a
heavy gage airtight tubular metal inner shell. Provide
heavy gage guide vanes on the discharge side of the
propeller, continuously welded to the outer surface of the
inner shell and the inner surface of the outer fan
housing, thereby acting as supports for the inner shell
and fan assembly.
Run V-belt drive between fan assembly
and motor, in a rigid airtight sheet metal enclosure,
welded to the inner tubular metal shell and the outer fan
housing. Provide all moving parts of fan assembly with
vibration isolation.
Extend fan assembly grease fitting
to exterior of housing.

FAN ACCESSORIES
A.

Support Legs; Provide integral structural support legs for


base mounted fans.

B.

Suspension Angle Supports: Provide integral structural


angle supports for fans required to be supported from the
overhead construction.

C.

Drive Guards: Provide approved steel guards for the exposed


sheave and drive belts on V-belt driven fans as per OSHA
requirements.

PART 3 SUPPLEMENTAL EXECUTION


3.01

INSTALLATION
A.

Install the Work of this Section in strict accordance with


the
manufacturer's
printed
instructions
and
the
requirements of the Drawings

B.

Isolate fans from building construction.

C.

Support fans independent from the ductwork.

D.

Provide fans, supported from the overhead construction,


with rubber-in-spring isolators designed for insertion in
split hanger rods (Refer to Section 15503: Vibration
Isolation and Seismic Controls, HVAC Systems for the
rubber-in-spring isolators).

3.02

INTERDISCIPLINARY TESTS AND FUNCTIONAL PERFORMANCE TESTS


A. Interdisciplinary Pre-Start-Up and Start-Up Tests:
The Contractor shall conduct interdisciplinary pre-start up
and start up tests as per the manufacturers start up
procedures. Contractor shall submit signed start up
affidavit signed by the factory authorized service
representative indicating that all of the manufacturers
pre-start up and start up procedures have been successfully
completed.
B. Functional Performance Tests:

Contractor shall also submit signed functional performance


testing affidavit signed by the factory authorized service
representative indicating that all of the manufacturers
functional
performance
tests
have
been
successfully
completed.
Refer to the functional performance tests as
defined in Section 15970 since a BMS/DDC system is to be
provided and the equipment is to be integrated into the
BMS/DDC system.

HVAC Contractor shall comply with the Commissioning


Requirements of Contract Specification Section S01660 for
Fans.

FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Upon completion of installation of the axial fans, and after


motor has been energized with normal power source, test
equipment to demonstrate compliance. Where possible field
correct malfunctioning equipment then retest to demonstrate
compliance.
Replace
equipment
that
cannot
be
satisfactorily corrected. The Contractor shall perform
necessary
Interdisciplinary
Tests
and
Functional
Performance
Tests
according
to
the
manufacturers
procedures.
B.

Instruct and train maintenance personnel in the equipment


operations. Training shall be for a minimum of 2 hours.
Secure written confirmation that instruction has been
provided and approved maintenance manuals received.

Section 15503 is to be utilized if the project involves


construction of a New Building or Addition to building in

went into effect. Use Section 15504, Vibration Isolation,

MC 513.10.
Edit the Section by defining the probable
temperature rise and insert into Article. Verify that when the
submittals are received, the components are suitable for the
probable exposure temperature.
Fans shall be selected for
stable performance based on normal temperature and, where
applicable,
elevated
temperature.
Calculations
and
manufacturer's fan curves shall be part of the documentation
procedures.

Delete submittal if smoke control systems are not used.

6.

Delete if dampers are not provided with the fans such as the
case when the fans mounted in ductwork not near the building
envelope and the dampers are independently located at exterior
envelope penetrations.
