ITEC Portfolio Artifact Reflection

Standard 3.4 Adaptive and Assistive Technology:

Candidates facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive technologies to support individual
student learning needs.
1. Briefly describe the artifact and the context in which it was created. What was/were
your individual contribution(s)?
The Assistive Technology Implementation Plan artifact was after working with a student
who is hearing impaired. I developed a plan based on for a student that I taught in 2015
in order to find assistive technology tools that could help meet her learning needs. This
plan was a part of some unstructured field experience hours.
2. Explain how this artifact demonstrates mastery of the standard/element under which it
is placed.
When completing this artifact I was able to assist my student who is hearing impaired
with adaptive and assistive technology to support her specific learning needs. I began by
Locating and recording what equipment she has at her disposal currently to use in and out
of school. I also put into place an implementation team made up of individuals who will
implement the AT with the student. The plan also addresses all of her IEP goals, who is
responsible and what AT will help meet the students goals. The plan also addresses how
the Assistive Technology will be evaluated and monitored. When evaluating these tools
the instructional strategies to meet these are listed as well as the frequency in which the
student will be monitored.
3. What did you learn from completing this artifact? What would you do differently to
improve the quality of the artifact or the process involved in creating the artifact?
After completing this module I definitely have a better understanding of what assistive
technology is and what the classroom teacher is expected to provide. I do more than ever
believe that communication between the teacher and student is essential if the assistive
technology is going to work. I have learned that assistive technology does not just have
to be a complicated technology tool but can be something very simple that has a positive
effect on the student being able to learn. I also did not realize all of the people involved
in an implementation team and what the federal government requires from the schools

but does not necessarily give an outline of how this is to be done or even assessed. One
of the things I would have done differently is add the student to the assessment team and
incorporate her in picking out the assistive technology.

4. How did the work that went into creating the artifact impact school improvement,
faculty development, or student learning? How can the impact be assessed?
The artifacts impact had a direct result in the students learning. I worked with the
special education teacher and discussed assistive or adaptive technology that could be
used to meet her IEP goals. Working with this student closely provided safe
conversations during class about her needs that before I worked with her on the plan she
was reluctant to tell me her needs in class. This impact can be assessed by her test scores
which improved from before the plan to after implementation of the plan.
