The self-management concept has received relatively use in the service


industry. This section discusses the concept of self-management in the
service environment, identifies some of the critical information
requirements unique to this environment, and supports the developmental
functions and business activities of the self-managed, working in the
professional work floor.

Putting together your own PDP that hysterics who you really are can be a
challenging, and in certain cases impossible accomplishment, if you do
not have the right resources and tools. It is a fact that in todays busy
world most of your time is spent dealing with many of lifes little
difficulties that are hampering your ability to learn who you are and what
you truly want. Without a solid personal development plan in place you
will never feel like you have time to grow yourself! This attempt is to give
you some opportunity to evaluate your progress and achievement of

Self-directed learning is a method of instruction used increasingly in adult


education. A scale was developed in response to a need for a valid and
reliable instrument to measure self-directed learning readiness. Such a
scale will allow cherish educators to diagnose students attitudes, abilities
and personality characteristics, necessary for self-directed learning.

Following task is for you to enhance your interpersonal and transferable


business skills by designing and conducting a role-play based on the
following theme;

A solid personal goal setting system is the key to effective time


management and life planning. Setting personal goals wisely, you get a
sense of achievement, sustain motivation, and reduce stress.

You have to assume that you belong to a group of 5 members and


you have to act in teams reflecting a real-life situation where you
have taken serious attempts to identify and enhance your
interpersonal and transferable business skills (LO 4.2)
You have to discuss a solution to a work-based problem / obstacle
you have identified and present it in the form of a role play of 30
minutes (LO 4.1 / LO 4.3)

Executive Summery
This report mainly talks about how an individual can estimate and develop a variety of
professional and personal skills in order to support future personal and career development.
And also it talks about how an individuals aptitudes to plan, control and practice a variety of
approaches to develop their performance as self-organized learners, in research for work or
more career development.
At the first task of this report, it covers the self-management skills and how can it be
improved by using dissimilar approaches, moreover it talks about a few certain skills which
can be practical and which has to be focused more in lifelong learning which will involve the
personal and professional development and based on the skills that I have and also it talks
about the advantages that the business organization can get and the advantages the individual
can get based on the skills that I have.
In the second task of this report, a particular job opportunity is selected which is published by
PYXLE with appealing professional requirements. Based on the job opportunity chosen, a
SWOT analysis is set recognizing what are the skills that I am missing of, what I have, what I
will find as an opportunity and what are the skills that I need to improve in order to apply for
the stated job. And then a Professional development plan (PDP) is set to recognize how I can
improve the professional skills that are necessary by the stated job opportunity.
Finally, it deeply discuss about the SMARTER objectives which is to applied in order to
generate a proper PDP and then a personal log is set based on the skills which is to be
improved, response which is received. Moreover dissimilar learning styles are been
recognized and have talk about what style I have been following and whats the reason

Introduction
Personal and Professional Development is been one of the most vital concept for the long
term development in the career. It can be said that it is the necessary way to set up the aim in
life. It is the responsibility of any individual to find out what are the skills they are missing of
and work on it for the long term improvement of their life. It is supposed that the education is
the key or the first step in anyones life if they want to get knowledge and skill. Professional
life is the place where the individual can put those knowledge and skill in to play.
Professional life on the other hand also supports an individual to develop their existing
knowledge and skill. Before an individual leave the academic part, he has to develop a
personal and a professional development plan.
Development is not short term; its a lifelong of determining and developing skills of an
individual. The personal development plan which I have planned is an opportunity to know
myself better. And also its recognizable where I want to be in my life in the short term as
well as in the long term. And it leads me on which areas I want to develop in.
It is important to be appropriate the SMARTER objective for an individual to generate a
proper PDP and go up the ladder and end up where he wants to be in his life.

1.1 Learning styles for Self-managed learning


Self-management leaning is an approach to management development which enables
individuals to be effective on what they do.
As peoples natures and dispositions vary from one individual to another, so does their style
of learning. The learning preference of one individual will differ from those of the instructor.
When this occurs, not only is it frustrating for everyone, the communication process breaks
down and learning fails. Once an individual knows his own natural learning preference, he
can work on expanding the way he learns, so that he can learn in other ways, not just in his
preferred style. And, by understanding learning styles, individuals can learn to create an
environment in which everyone can learn from each other, not just those who use one
particular learning style.

Self-Management Learning methods and How to Develop those Skills

Time management
Time management is the process of exercising concise control over the amount of time spent
on specific activities, especially to increase efficiency or productivity.
Time management skills are essential tools that any employee or an individual must possess
if they want to develop and keep up with the fast paced world. Time is a restricting resource,
in that once spent it cannot be gained again. Therefore, by learning to manage ones time can
lead to efficiency, effectiveness and productivity in both the work place and personal life.
Everyone differs from one another; therefore they have their own daily routine with different
time clocks. A person who manages time well will finish tasks ahead of deadlines, without
last-minute sacrificing work quality. The major disadvantage of having poor time
management is the effects it has on stress levels. It leads to the dissatisfaction of not having
worked hard and wasted time. A person who poorly manages time cannot manage things in an
efficient manner and also the poor time management leads to imperfection.
The development of the Time management skill can be through the following factors

Prioritisation: This is one of the most essential tools for effective time management.
Prioritisation is very important when time is limited and demands are seemingly unlimited.
This is carried out by listing down all the tasks that needs to be done and measuring the
importance of completing each task using a basis or criteria. It can be based on time
constraints, on the potential benefit of the task. This based on profitability or benefit gained is
the most commonly used basis for prioritisation.
Scheduling: Effective scheduling is the process of planning to make the best use of time allocated for
a specific task or person.
Scheduling is the process by which you look at the time available to you, and plan how you will use it
to achieve the goals you have identified. By using a schedule properly, you can:
Plan to make the best use of the time available.
Leave enough time for things you absolutely must do.
Minimize stress by avoiding over-commitment to yourself and others.

Establish a routine
We are creatures of habits. If we study at a certain time or day then it will be easier to get into focus
mode. And also, it is better to study briefly and regularly.

Leadership Skill
Leadership is the ability of influencing others through the behavior or actions to attain
specific objectives. Managing the followers and guiding them in a proper way is the main
responsibility of a leader. Ideally, leaders are preferred to do right things. A good leader will
trust the members of the group, willingness to be a team player and share, value ideas to
make the team effectively.
The leadership roles and skills can be seen around us not only in the work environment. It can
be applied to any situations where you have to take the leadership professional wise, socially
and at home when it comes to family settings. Leaders become leaders because they have the
authority to become a leader and people want to follow them.
The development of the leadership skill can be through the following factors,

Critical thinking: To be hired for a high-status job, you will need to be a critical thinker.
Good leaders are capable to predict potential issues before they happen. They can then
improve methods to avoid the problems from happening. Good leaders are also aware of
potential opportunities and take advantage of them to benefit the company and employees.
Effective Listening: Without listening skills, you are not capable to get comment from others
and get an idea of what team members like about the tasks they work on. Feedback is the key
to listen effectively, you need to keep eye contact, avoid interruption and react appropriately.
Communication is not only about verbal communication. Be aware of body language and
gestures to decide what people are actually saying.
Motivation Skills: Once the given task to team members is fulfilled successfully, celebrate it
with them; it is a way of motivating them to do better work in the future. Being a leader will
not constantly say that people will start following, its the responsibility of the leader to
ensure that he demonstrates some ways to the people to say that he/she is behind them,
helping them when required and directing them through the exact path.
Presentation Skill
This is the skill which refers to the capability of communicating in an efficient way although
the fact presenting it to a small or a large audience. In order to be an efficient presenter, one
has to maintain practicing the presentation which is to be presented in order to make it
efficient and effective. But unhappily, most of us lack in many areas such as in
pronunciations, having stage panic and lack of knowledge of the content which is to be
presented.

The development of the Presentation skill can be through the following factors,
Talking naturally to the audience: It is always good to avoid reading from a script when
doing a presentation. And at the same time its good to keep a short written note in hand to
ensure if in case we forget what to talk therefore can have a fast look into it and talk to the
audience naturally again.
Change the tone, pitch and volume of the voice: By doing this, it will over again get the
attraction of the audience and it will give the audience an attention to listen instead talking in

a monotone voice which will make the audience think bored and loose attention in the
presentation.
Have eye contact with the audience: Keep glancing at the audience, every single person
who attend it, it will make the audience think well and get their mind towards the presenter.
Using visual aids when appropriate: Using charts, diagrams, and graphs, pictures and video
will make the presentation attractive. Should speak all the appropriate things which is
concerning to the visual aids and not showing a picture and talk some other things which will
divert the audience.
Prepare and structure the presentation before presenting: When starting the presentation,
notify the audience what you are going to talk about and end with a good note that is
shortening all the key points talked in the presentation throughout.
Communication Skill
Having excellent communication skills help people to communicate well with each other.
Effective communication occupies the selection of the best communications channel, the
technical know-how to use the channel, the presentation of information to the target audience,
and the skill to understand feedbacks expected from others. Developing good communication
will help many facts in life, from the professional life till the social meeting. Having good
communication skills develops the value of life.
The development of the Communication skill can be through the following factors,
Learn and listen: Listening is not the similar as hearing; learn to listen not only to the
language being spoken but how they are being verbal and the non-verbal messages sent with
them. Aim not to consider about what to speak next whilst listening; instead clear your
mentality and focus on the message being received. Your friends, colleagues and other
contacts will appreciate good listening skills.
Attempt to resolve conflicts: Be trained to troubleshoot and resolve issues and conflicts as
they arise. Use your listening skills to hear and appreciate both sides of any argument encourage and make possible people to talk to each other. Try not to be judgmental but
instead relieve the way for conflict resolution.

Maintain a positive attitude and smile: Some people want to be around someone who is
normally miserable. Do your best to be friendly, positive with other people. If you smile
often and stay cheerful, people are more expected to react positively to you.
Anger Management Skill
All of us get angry quickly; therefore we know what anger is and how harsh it could be. By not being
capable to manage anger, it can lead to bigger issues as the anger will manage you and you will not
manage the anger any more. It can guide to personal relationship issues, issues at work and in the
entire quality of the life.

The development of the Anger management skill can be through the following factors,
Think before you speak: The moment of the anger, it's easy to say something you'll later be
sorry. Take a little time to gather your opinions before saying anything and permit others
involved in the situation to do the same.
Use humor to release tension: Use humor to help you face what's making you angry and,
possibly, any unlikely expectations you have for how things should go. Avoid sarcasm,
though it can hurt feelings and build things worse.

1.2 The skills that are required for lifelong learning

The top method in order to empower our lives and building ourselves better-off is by
planning our own lives and also the societies around are by self-improvement and learning.
The skills such as communication skills, presentation skills, time management, leadership
skills and Anger management skills affects a lot if Im to develop myself professionally and
personally. By working on the above mentioned skills will provide me the advantages to my
student life as well as my professional life in the future where I will be capable to participate
with the other people effectively. These skills will concern lifetime and will not end in any
cases. Let me underline on two key skills that I give more importance.

Time Management Skill

Time management is one of the skills which are to be given high priority as it acts a most
important role in everyones life. Its very essential in order to have proper time management.
Currently Im a student enrolled to do the HND in business management and Human resource
management; it is not at all easy to manage the time when it comes to assignment
submissions because I have to finish my personal work as well. Therefore, I actually have a
tough time to finish the assignment at least a day before the submission. And I hurry doing it
within two or three days and end up receiving Distinctions or Merits. I got Merits because of
my poor time management. Therefore, if I continue a better schedule, that is by having
correct time management I will be capable to get distinctions for my assignments by
completing it. By developing this now itself, it will help out me in my future activities as
well, when I begin to do my degree and also when I get join in a professional job.

Leadership Skill

On the other hand, throughout my HND life as a student, I have been as a leader for group
presentations in class. That was the wonderful opportunity to be a leader in HND program
since now. However, unluckily lacking of my forwardness made a few other people to take up
the leadership. The reason behind for my lack of forwardness is that I dont have selfconfidence, I felt people may not like me and due to that my leadership will make the event
which is to be organized a failure. Taking the leadership was an achievement at the end of the
day, but it would have been a great achievement if I have had more confidence and being

more vision- focusing on the big picture and being determined and also if I had taken more
responsibility. Now I have identified my weaknesses, these are the areas which I need to
develop in and be more successful not only in the rest of my HND life, but also when I get
join in a job and take the leadership with confident when required.

1.3 Advantages to the organization and to self-benefits based on the selfmanagement skills which are been developed

across diverse sectors both internationally as well as locally on verticals which include

Benefits for the organization regarding to my Time management skill are,

Proper scheduling and working with goals would allow me towards time management.
However this skill needs to be optimized as I do get delay in starting up my work.

However, I have the ability of finishing my work on or before deadlines.


Works related to me will be done within the given time period with the required quality.
Less Wasted Time - When I know what I need to do, I waste less time in inactive
activities. I can already be a step forward of my work. Due to this, the organization will

benefit out of it.

Strengths
Ability to apply educational theories and lesson in everyday life situations.
Ability to identify the risks involved in a particular strategy or method by thinking things
through.
Ability to speak fluently in all two major languages spoken in Sri Lanka (Tamil and
English).
Ability to think innovatively.
Currently doing Higher National Diploma in Business management and Human Resource
Management.
And got a good command in 2 different languages such as English and Tamil.

Lack of confidence in public speaking and making presentations

Competition from colleagues and peers.


Lack of exposure to other industries might hinder job opportunities.
Prolong economic recession might affect family business profitability and financial
capability of continuing higher education abroad can be hampered.
Many degree holders are seeking for jobs, therefore I am currently doing the HND
program, and there are possibilities for a degree holder to fill that vacant.
There are some extents only I can work, because am doing my HND so I cant manage
both parallel.
The above Personal SWOT Analysis simply shows the stronger points of me and the weaker
points of me where I should able to develop and improve in future to apply for such job
opportunity. While weighting the weakness and the threats against strengths of my own self,
there are more strengths are there to eliminate such weak areas. But, still due to the
competitive job market that exists in the current world. Improving our weakness will be a key
for the future success. Therefore, I should find out such ways where I can correct my
weakness and overcome the threats. As an individual, I should able to find a part time job
while studying where I can eliminate the work experience from my weakness to the strengths.
Also, attending for a language classes and making new Sinhala friends for me will simply
improve my language fluency in Sinhala which can be strength for my list.

myself in different areas. Therefore I need to implement a professional development plan for how to
improve my interpersonal skills to achieve the job opportunity provided by Pyxle.

3.1 The method to implement to create a proper PDP by using SMARTER
objectives

SAMRTER stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time bond, Evaluated and
Reviewed. SMARTER objectives are one way to develop well written objectives. Developing
specific, quantifiable objectives it needs time, in order thinking and clear picture of the results
expected from the activities. The most specific objectives are the easier it will to be
representative success.
Specific - if I am developing a proper PDP for reach my goals I want to be more specific,
how accurately I am going to achieve that, the process. Therefore my objectives should be
well defined. Moreover to be specific I must know how to break my whole achievable tasks
in smaller steps.
Measurable - The task should be measurable and quantifiable. Therefore the goal that I state,
I need to know a way to measure the achievement of the development plan. If there is
dissimilarity between my final result and expected result, I should know a way to reach my
expected result by recognizing what could be my final result by measuring my PDP.
Achievable - this simply means, if it can be achieved in the time frame set down with the
resources accessible. Resources also refer to the people who are there to help me in order to
reach my goals. And I need to set the objectives based on the PDP if its achievable only.
Realistic - In order to be realistic, a goal should represent an objective toward which Im
willing and capable to work. A goal can be equally high and realistic; Im the only one who
can settle on just how high my goal should be. But I should make sure that every goal stands
for substantial progress. Simply, I should make sure that its achievable.
Time bond - I should set a time scale for achieve my objectives. The steps I should improve
one by one and I should set a time period when I am going to achieve. Therefore I must
review my past acts and I must set the time scale for my future plans. This always keeps me
motivated because this supports me to achieve my goals in the purposed time and make
myself satisfy.

Evaluated - I should make sure that I evaluate my own work and see how well I have
performed, if I feel that I have not worked well, and then I should start working on it.
Reviewed - I must make sure that I maintain reviewing on what I have done in the past till
the present and see how well I have performed. If I am to develop, I should make sure that I
beat on my weaknesses and start working on being more productive and create a good PDP.

According to the theory of Honey and Mumford there are 4 main learning styles which
individuals can possess. It is possible that one individual may have a mixture of these
learning styles. They are shown by the diagram below.

Why Im a pragmatist?

To some extent I believe in theories.


I like mathematics and the application of equations and assumptions.
Good at making decisions and help others and myself with solutions when it
comes to problems.

I believe the mixture of the above two learning styles will best suit me in my career. The
reason behind this is that I prefer involving in business field where changes would always
take place. Being an activist would make me creative and would move me towards new
opportunities. Through this way Ill be able to get attention of many of the customers.
Also experimenting on new things would help me identify new discoveries and new market
opportunities.
It is not always possible to try on new things as risk of failure can create a great impact,
especially in business field. Therefore depending on theories, knowledge which I have
gained, making assumptions will be very helpful. Also it is not advisable to forget past
experience when making decisions. Being a pragmatist will focus me towards my past
experience and would help me doing my new activities with minimum failure.

Conclusion
Every individual has to develop their skills personally and professionally. Following a
personal and professional plan enhances the existing skills and develops new skills. Selfmanaged learning is the key to develop such skills. This method of learning that could
improve or develop ones lacking areas through a daily plan.
Whatever that is practiced in own, helps to yield excellent outcomes. Therefore, self-learning
can be adopted as a lifelong method. Time management is a skill required by the
organizations. Improving this skill leads to a successful future where many benefits are
gained from the organizational and individual perspectives.
Although this report talks about me on how to develop my PPD, this can be usually applied to
any one. As a student doing my higher education, I have lots of things to improve;
particularly skills that I need to improve as I move on myself rationally in life. Therefore I
have completed that I am capable to make those changes to my life and develop selfmanagement skills. All through the whole report I have been spotlight on the learning skill
and individual should have, that is because I personally advise this skill for people, this skill
obtain people the recognition they want. I finish my SWOT analysis by significant the verity
that I am capable to defeat my weakness and threats and convert them to opportunities within
a short period of time using my recent traits and aptitudes.
