His description of Israel boycotters as corduroywearing, snaggle-toothed, lefty academics last
year will live long in the memory. A well-known friend
of the Jewish community, Boris who spent time on
a kibbutz as a youngster raised eyebrows in 2014,
when he said Israels actions in Gaza were disproportionate and ugly. Overall, his long-standing support of Israel, and
his recent trade visit establishing links, will hold him in good stead.

Like Boris, the Home Secretary has been very supportive of the Jewish community, lending strong
support amid an increase in anti-Semitism during
the Gaza conflict. Subsequently, many will remember her at a Board of Deputies plenary, holding up
a Je Suis Juif sign with ex-Communities Secretary Eric Pickles. She
has shown a keen understanding of the concerns of the community.

TRIBUTES TO A LOYAL FRIEND

JEWISH LEADERS have paid tribute to
outgoing Prime Minister David Cameron,
after his resignation following Britains decision to leave the EU.
Sir Mick Davis, chairman of the Jewish
Leadership Council and former chairman
of the Holocaust Commission, said: David
Cameron has always been a loyal friend of
the Jewish community and a visible and
vocal supporter of Israel. He has worked
constructively with us, engaging on issues
of concern to British Jews. I wish to thank
him for his many years of service.
Karen Pollock, chief executive of the
Holocaust Educational Trust, said Cameron
had always been a staunch friend of our
cause and our community and we thank
him for his years of support, not only for our
Lessons from Auschwitz project, but also
his establishment of the national Holocaust
Commission and soon-to-be created Holocaust memorial beside Parliament.
Board of Deputies chief executive Gillian
Merron said: We want to extend our
communitys heartfelt gratitude to David

suggestions Corbyn had not done
enough to campaign for a Remain
vote last week and fears that David
Camerons successor could call a snap
election.
A vote of no confidence in his leadership was overwhelmingly passed on
Tuesday.

figure, said in her resignation letter
that Corbyn had shown her nothing
but kindness and that it had been
a privilege to serve in the new post.
But she added: My conviction is
that we need a Labour leader who can
unite our party, both in Parliament
and in the country. I have always

closely to local party members, loyalty
to the party must come first.
Ruth Smeeth, who served as parliamentary private secretary to the
shadow Northern Ireland and Scotland teams, also stepped down.

No safeguards for shechita in post-Brexit Britain

THE THREAT to shechita in post-Brexit

Britain was spelled out in stark detail this
week by one of the Jewish communitys
top campaigners.
Shimon Cohen, director of Shechita
UK, said British Jewry had so far been
protected by European Regulation 1099,
which exempts religious slaughter and
overrides domestic law, but which will no
longer apply if Britain leaves the European Union.
If that happens, the British government
would either have to ask Parliament to
adopt 1099, with the exemption, or come
up with its own law, said Cohen. Either
way, if it goes to a vote in the House of Parliament, wed lose. Its a numbers game.
Cohen added that, alongside parking,
animal welfare was one of the two
biggest issues MPs hear most about from

be here in the UK, countering nationalists

In Brussels, Rabbi Menachem Margolin,
head of the Rabbinal Centre of Europe,
which represents 800 rabbis, agreed that
Britains exit posed a headache.
He said: The EU is today much weaker.
The UK in particular was a strong advocate for freedom of religion. We have lost
an important voice here.
He argued that chaos in Europe historically leads to nationalism and radicalism,
adding: It brings attacks on the Jewish
way of life, such as shechita and brit milah.
Brexit sees a number of threats from these
parties, who are licking their lips at the
prospect of increasing power. It appears
that Brexit has given them hope. That is
deeply worrying for Jews across Europe.

LAST WEEK Britain voted to leave the

European Union. This week the political
fallout has been tumultuous.
Away from Westminster, we have seen
ugly scenes. Some people are intent on
using the outcome of the referendum to
divide communities. Others have inferred
from the result that voting Leave means

immigrants should now be forced out of

the UK. Indeed, BBC News carried an
interview with a man with a swastika tattoo who said he now felt able to speak
out against the presence of EU migrants.
There have been other troubling
reports of racist abuse and this week we
issued a statement deploring racist harassment and urging our community to stand
in solidarity with those suffering. We have
confidence in the government, police and
civil society to take a firm stance and
ensure we all feel safe and secure. There
can be no place for racism in Britain.
So far, the Jewish community does

not seem to have suffered much from
these attacks. But it didnt take long for
people to take to social media to claim
the current campaign against Labour
leader Jeremy Corbyn has been orchestrated by the Zionists.
The referendum result has been celebrated by the far-right in Europe. French
National Front leader Marine Le Pen
called Brexit a victory for freedom and
Beatrix von Storch of the right-wing populist Alternative for Germany party said
she cried for joy at the result. As and
when we do leave the EU, British Jews

still need to work closely with our European counterparts in the face of any
potential upsurge in anti-Semitism.
Ultimately, all of us Jews and nonJews need to unite to ensure that whatever path the UK takes, we never turn
away from the values of liberalism and
tolerance, which have made Britain the
country it is today and a place where the
Jewish community has thrived.
There may be hard bargaining ahead
for officials, but these are values on
which we can never compromise.

JEWISH SECURITY officials this week

urged the government to clamp
down on racism after 87 incidents
were reported in the immediate aftermath of the Brexit vote.

spokesman Dave Rich said: In terms
of bigger picture its worrying, and
part of a wider atmosphere of xenophobia which the authorities should
clamp down on quickly.
He added that political leaders
need to make sure it doesnt spread
by not using divisive and xenophobic
language and by explicitly condemning hate crime.
Police figures show a 57 percent
spike in hate crime targeting immigrant
communities in the three days after the
referendum, with officers saying this
was no coincidence.
Among the examples reported were
instances of racist graffiti daubed on
Polish centres and other ethnic minorities being abused in the streets and on
social media.
The CST said it works with different
ethnic communities to share expertise.
While Rich confirmed there were no

plans to extend this in the wake of the
vote, he explained that if we receive
any requests of that nature, well do
what we can.
Echoing the sentiments was the
Jewish Council for Racial Equality
(JCORE), which said it was extremely concerned by the increasing number of incidents of
racist abuse taking place on
British streets since the EU referendum on Thursday.
The UK is home to more than
65 million people, the rights group
said. Over decades, we have all
worked very hard to ensure that people feel safe in their communities.
It is important that we stand
together, regardless of race, religion
or political opinion, to ensure everyone understands that the abuse experienced by many in the last few days is
unacceptable.
JCORE added that it was especially incumbent on politicians, on all
sides to reaffirm their own commitment to the safety and security of minorities in Britain, many of whom now
feel forced to question whether they
have a place here.
Gillian Merron, chief executive
of the Board of Deputies, said: The
Jewish community knows all too
well these feelings of vulnerability
and will not remain silent in the face
of a reported rise in racially-motivated
harassment.

They are not here to cause any trouble, just to work and make England

AS WE emerge from Shabbat

Brexit, what is now at stake
for French Jews in London?
And what could it mean in
terms of further emigration
from France to the UK?
In the past few days, I have
been asked whether I would
be allowed back in were I to
travel abroad. Well, I did
travel... and I was allowed
back in, no questions asked.
My theory is that, for current
residents, there will be no
panic, but many questions
along the following lines:
Will I have to apply for some
type of residency status two to
three years from now?
Should I apply for dual citizenship?
Will it be more difficult for
my family members and friends
in France to join me if they
elect to do so?
That last question leads us to
switch perspective and look at
things from the vantage point
of Jews in France and whether
both their chances and appetite to move to London have
been affected by the leave victory.
From a security standpoint,
the waters are a bit muddled.
On the one hand, France will
not be spared by the turmoil
created by this economic and

political weakening of Europe
and the reinforcement of extreme right nationalistic feelings. This is not good for the
Jews.
On the other hand, the first
nationalistic gambit in the
reconfiguration of the map
belongs well and truly to the
UK, as proven by the results of
the referendum. So: safer in
the UK than in France? Today,
yes. Tomorrow: who knows?
I had the opportunity of
spending last Friday night
dinner in Brussels with Frans
Timmermans, the first vice
president of the European
Commission. He did worry
about the implied emergence
of nationalistic agendas (when
has it resulted in better democracy?) and of the dismissing
of intellectual reasoning to
the benefit of identification
with emotions and soundbites
(again, when has this ever
resulted in betterment?).
From an economic standpoint, many French Jews work
in or for the City and both the
prospects of economic downturn and its accompanying layoffs and the possible relocation
of European operations to the
continent, cast a shadow on
their perspectives.
Many, for whom the City was
the next Eldorado, will now
hedge their bets and most
likely delay any plans to move
here.
THE CHIEF Rabbi of France was

in London this week, insisting that
France is still safe for Jews but
warning of the consequences of
Brexit for minority groups, writes

Speaking at the French ambassadors residence on Tuesday,
Ham Korsia said he was certain
the rise of the populist far right
would not result in Frances Jews
fleeing in great numbers. He also
emphatically disagreed with
Natan Sharansky, head of the
Jewish Agency for Israel, who
declared on Monday: There is
no future for Jews in France.
Korsia told Jewish News: The
fact that [French prime minister]
Manuel Valls said: France without
Jews is not France is more impor-
tant to me. It reminds us that we

are loved and we have a place.
There may be difficulties, but
on the whole Korsia felt it was
safe for Jews in France. In any
case, it was preferable to stay
and fight against racism.
Asked about the rise of Marine
Le Pens Front National, which has
been accused of anti-Semitism, he
said it did not matter how popular
the party was, but it would be
dangerous to give it support.
After Brexit, many French
Jews expressed concerns over
their future in Britain.
One man recounted being
shoved in the street near Piccadilly Circus while speaking
French and being told: I dont
want people like you here.
Charities facing uncertainty

JEWISH CHARITIES have voiced
concerns over how the uncertainty associated with Brexit may
impact upon their work.
Simon Morris, chief executive
of Jewish Care said it was an
uncertain time as the charity
had a significant number of
staff working across the organisation who are EU nationals.
He said the charity was talking
to advisers and doing all we
can to reassure staff that we will
support them as best we can.
Norwoods chief executive,
Elaine Kerr, said: We will not
suffer a detrimental impact, as
long as the UK economy is

healthy, local authorities and the
NHS continue to fund care and
support for our services users at
current levels and our donors financial positions can be maintained.
World Jewish Relief, which
works mainly in the former
Soviet Union and Eastern
Europe, said it was primarily
concerned with the value of
sterling as it received no funding
from the EU most vulnerable

end and they will have to take

make ends meet I wince. Its
very clear the elite have not understood what has been happening in Britain in recent years and

The British people voted last
Thursday for a decision to come
out of the EU. It was a long-term
view about the future direction of
our country.
Had the tragic death of Jo Cox
not happened a few days prior
and had the government not
scared everyone about the impact of leaving because it could
not make a strong case for remaining, I dare say the leave vote
would have been higher still.
However, the City now, partially scared by all the false
government warnings, partially
throwing its toys out the pram
because it wasnt the result it
wanted (or expected) and damaged markets prove it right, and
partially because its players all
sheepishly follow one another, is
behaving totally irresponsibly.
It has itself to blame for the immediate turmoil.

The EU is almost half the size
of global GDP it was 25 years ago
and shrinking. Everyone agrees it
has a dysfunctional single currency that is causing mass unemployment across the continent.
This economic situation is
building resentment between European nations and, consequently, we have more extremist
parties in the EU rearing their
heads at any time since 1945.
Meanwhile, the single market
is not some magical world bringing untold benefits. Any country
can trade with it without being a
member. The US exports more
to it than we do, without having
all the disbenefits.
And even if there were tariffs
of a few percent, this would
amount to less than our annual
contribution to the EU. Only five
percent of British companies
export to the EU, so the effect of
tariffs would be miniscule compared with, say, the increase of
VAT from 15 to 20 percent on all
our goods, which has happened
in recent years. Our economy
did not fall off a cliff then.
The long-term prospect for
Britain is excellent outside the
EU. We will join the vast majority
of normal countries in the world
that arent shackled to a shrinking, increasingly undemocratic
EU. It is a great opportunity for
Britain and, with the recent mayhem in the markets, a great time
to buy shares.

fight for the best possible deal for the
capital, which voted overwhelmingly to
stay inside the union.

do so sooner rather than later.
He pointed out that the area of England with the highest level of immigration saw the most overwhelming remain
vote. Let me say loud and clear to the
million or so Europeans in our city: you
are welcome. We recognise the huge
contribution you make to our society
and that wont change.
The iftar doubled as a celebration of
the relationship between the Somali
Bravenese Welfare Association and the
shul, which began three years ago when
the latter provided a base for the former
after an arson attack on its centre. For
the last three Ramadans, the shul has
hosted prayers and well as an iftar
event, featuring Jewish songs and readings from the Koran.

member Andrew Dismore and Muslim
Council of Britain head Shuja Shafi, of his
pride at the story of friendship. People talk about Jo Coxs maiden speech
when she spoke about the fact weve got
more in common than divides us this

exemplifies what she was talking about,
he said. Its the story of hospitality that
the Torah teaches. People who arent of
an organised faith sometimes say those
of faith dont practise what they preach
they certainly do here. I tell the stories
whenever I speak to mayors from other
countries who ask for advice about interfaith relations.He added: Thank you
for making me a mayor who can boast
about my city. Thank you for being the
light in these dark, dark times.

home. Our children come here and the
parents greet each other at school.

Hands which sponsored the ifar food
it was the very first time in a synagogue. He said he was very happy to
be present. If Muslims and Jews come

together we can give a good message
to the communities.
Rabbi Berger, who was described by
Khan as the coolest rabbi, said the
event was part of a long journey and a
relationship thats been building over a
few years. But after this past week and
seeing quite how fractured society is,
that the voice of hate and fear is so pervasive, its important this is not a new relationship but an embedded one that
means we can heal each other at times
that feel so devastating.

Kids camp boss gets suspended sentence

THE CO-OWNER of a childrens summer
camp whose phone was found with naked
images of girls aged three and four has
been handed down a 24-month jail sentence suspended for two years.
Ben Lewis, 26, co-owner of LL Camps
in Bushey, Herts, had also videoed and
photographed up the skirt of a nine-yearold girl whom he was supposed to be tutoring for her maths SATS, the court
heard. When he was investigated by the
police, a pair of childs knickers were
found next to one of his laptops.
Lewis, who admitted three counts of
making (downloading) indecent images
and one of taking indecent images, was
sentenced on Tuesday at St Albans
Crown Court, and has spent the equivalent of 14 months in custody on remand
and on a tagged curfew.
Prosecutor Ann Evans said Lewis, of
Lullington Garth, Borehamwood, had
used the TOR Browser on a laptop, which
allowed him to access the internet anonymously and for the viewing history to be
automatically deleted.
Lewis was arrested after giving his
iPhone and PIN to Sandra Vicente, a camp
staff member, so she could play music at
a childrens party on 1 August last year.
When the party finished, another colleague, Mohammed Ramli, asked to see
photographs Lewis had taken of him a
few days previously on the phone. After
looking at those, Vicente clicked on the
deleted images folder.
Giving evidence at the trial of Lewis
business partner, Tal Landsman, 26, last
month, Vicente said: I was just nosey. I
looked at the deleted items. First I saw children on a beach. They were not wearing
anything. Then I saw pictures that had been
taken in a changing room. I saw childrens
[private parts]. I would say they were aged
three to four. I felt my brain was polluted.
She said that the next day, Lewis, the
camps designated safeguarding officer,
spoke to her at work. He said: There is
something disgusting on my phone. I
dont know how it got there, she said.
Three days later, she reported him to
the police after he came to her with a
three-year-old girl who he said he had
found in the toilets and had wet herself.
At that point I put my foot down...
I went home from work and called the
police, she said.
Among the deleted files on the phone
was a self-recorded image of a naked
Lewis in the woods, she said.
The prosecutor said: The police interrogated all of Ben Lewis many electronic
devices. Chat logs, indecent images and
videos have been recovered from several
of his devices going back a number of
years and found in his room by one of
his old laptops was a pair of childs knickers, which he tried to explain away as
being his brothers, who was 22 at the
time of the search. Then he said it was his
mothers who did the washing.
The iPhone images had been deleted
before the phone was seized by the police
and it had been restored to its factory
settings. Once the phone had been restored, searches had been made, including: indecent images lawyer, delete
iCloud account and iPhone deleting
recently deleted photos.

Searches had also been made on an
iPod touch, which included: Can a sex
offender go to the USA?, accidental
downloading child porn and how do
police search computers?
Chat logs found on an iPad next to
Lewis bed showed conversations between 27 December 2013 and 16 October 2014 involving sexual exploitation and
abuse of children. On an Acer laptop,
there was a bookmark linked to a website
called Lolita City. Two videos, which were
graded as indecent in Category A and B,
were also found on the laptop. A programme called CCleaner had also been
installed on the laptop, allowing for the
secure deletion of sensitive files.
On a Nexus tablet found in a car there
were four indecent images and one indecent movie. Evans said: These were what
are called first generation images and had
been taken by the person holding the
device.
The subject of this indecent movie was
a young girl whom Ben Lewis had been
privately tutoring in maths at her home
address. This young girl would sit at the
far end of the kitchen with Ben Lewis while
her mother prepared dinner at the other
end of the room.
Her mother specifically recalls being
annoyed as she noticed that this defendant had his iPad and phone with him and
was constantly fiddling with one or the
other. The film of the young girl that was
found on this device concentrates on focusing on her private parts.
Jeremy Dein QC, defending Lewis,
said: He has lost his employment and

has no savings and no income. He
wants to get married, have children
and put all this behind him.
Having spent three months on
remand and a further eight months
on a qualifying curfew, means that
Lewis has served the equivalent of
a 14-month sentence.
He has completed an online
course by Stop It Now, a charity
aimed at preventing child sexual
abuse and must attend up to 100 days
on a Community Sex Offender Programme and attend up to 60 days of a
rehabilitation requirement.
The judge made a Sexual Harm Prevention Order banning him from working with
children and having unsupervised contact with children, unless that is
agreed by social services. He must also
register as a sex offender indefinitely
and pay 3,000
prosecution costs.

Looted Nazi art returned

to descendants of thieves
ART EXPERTS have accused German authorities of a cover-up
after research shows that they
gave Nazi-looted art to the
descendants of the high-ranking
Nazis who looted it, rather than
its rightful Jewish owners.
The London-based Commission for Looted Art in Europe
(CLAE), representing the family of
the late Gottlieb and Mathilde
Kraus of Vienna, said Old Masters
paintings were sold for "paltry
sums" to close friends of Hitler in
what they describe as a remarkable scandal.
The arts ultimate post-war
destination was discovered by
the Kraus family, who were trying
to recover 160 looted paintings,
and who had thought two of their
familys paintings would be in the
state-owned museum in Munich,
after records showed that they
were handed over to Bavaria by
the United States in 1952 for the
purpose of restitution.
However, they now know that
10 years later, the state of Bavaria
instead gave View of a Dutch
Square by Jan van der Heyden to
Henriette Hoffmann-von Schirach,
the daughter of Hitlers close
friend and photographer, Heinrich Hoffmann, and wife of the
notorious Gauleiter of Vienna,
Baldur von Schirach, who was
Charity launched in memory of Rosie

A BREAST CANCER charity
launched this week in memory of
a mum-of-three who succumbed
to the disease, writes Rebecca
Pinnington.
Rosie Choueka died in June
last year aged 38, after losing her
battle against breast cancer. In her
memory, around 200 friends and
family together with celebrity
patron Peter Capaldi launched
the charity Second1st on Tuesday
night at Bristows, the central London law firm where Rosie worked.
Trustee Craig Fisher, who is in
charge of fundraising for Second1st, said he was pleased by
the encouraging response to
the charity so far. Weve had
some lovely feedback and I think

the medical patrons weve attracted can put us on the map as
a credible, respectable charity.
The charity raised more than
25,000 ahead of its official
launch, and is partnered with
Breast Cancer Now to channel
money into research. This will
fund Professor Andrew Tutt at the
Institute of Cancer Research, who
is developing new drugs to prevent aggressive forms of cancer
returning and developing into
secondary breast cancer.
Fisher added: Currently not
enough research is being done
into secondary breast cancer, but
we can change that.

man from London, after his

Norman Rosenbaum, with

prove their claims of ownership,
the looted families had their
claims thrown out, or impossible
hurdles created to prevent them

There must be a full accounting of these shameful transactions with high-ranking Nazis and
the way they have been hidden,
said the CLAE. Without total
transparency and accountability,
the victims of the Nazi looting
will continue to be denied long
overdue justice.

raised money for 10 MDA ambulances for Israel. He has

made a monumental difference.
Tributes were also paid

to the Wolfson Foundation,
which acted as a major contributor of funding for the tenth
ambulance.
The timing of the presentation was poignant, coming only
days after two Netanya vehicles
were sent to Tel Aviv to treat
the wounded after the terrorist
attack at a Sarona Market
restaurant earlier this month,
during which four people died.
The ambulance was presented in memory of the Rubinson family of Lodz, Poland, by
Allen and Sheila Robinson,
whose children Mark and
Michelle represented them.

do with each other.

(both girls and boys) get to know each

the discipline of following instructions during

are necessary to do well at school.
This is then built on with two sessions a week
of small group or individual tuition in the core
school subjects of maths, Hebrew and English.
For these children, most of whom are behind

Student gets anti-Semitism apology

A JEWISH STUDENT has received an apology and payment
of 1,000 from the University of
York Students Union after complaining of anti-Semitism.
Law student Zachary Confino,
21, was offered the four-figure
sum after two years battling antiSemitism from students while
studying at the university.
It is understood Confino, who
narrowly missed out on a firstclass degree and had suffered
with stress, had been racially
abused and bullied.
The university confirmed that
Confino had accepted the written apology from its students
union following the complaint.

as a mediator to resolve the matter and that it welcomed students from all backgrounds,
faiths and nationalities.
The statement said: The University of York acted as mediator

to resolve a long-running complaint brought by a student
against the University of York
Students Union. This involved

Union to the student and a
token payment of 1,000.
The statement added that joint
statements had been signed with
both the Jewish Society and the
Islamic Society on campus.
It continued: The university is
committed to preserving the
right to freedom of expression
while also combating anti-Semitism, Islamophobia and any other
form of race hate.

rights organisation over the legality of local council boycotts
on Israeli goods produced on
the West Bank has been dismissed by the High Court.
Jewish Human Rights Watch
(JHRW) asked for a ruling that
the councils, in passing the
boycott resolutions, breached
equality law duties and failed
to have regard to the need to
eliminate discrimination and
harassment of Jewish people,
or the need to foster good relations between Jewish and
non-Jewish people.

ally after a six-year severance of
ties between Jerusalem and
Turkey ended in an agreement to
resume contact and cooperation.

Rome last weekend, Turkey will
help rebuild key infrastructure in

Gaza, with material entering
through the port of Ashdod for a
200-bed hospital, a power station
and a desalinisation plant, to help
ease the Strips twin water and energy crises.
Turkey will also be allowed to
support major projects in the
West Bank, including the industrial zone in Jenin. Both the Pales-
tinian Authority and Hamas have

reportedly welcomed the agreement.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu announced the news
after meeting US Secretary of
State John Kerry, who first pushed
the two former allies towards reconciliation two years ago.
Both Israel and Turkey stand to
gain from resumed ties. Alongside all the diplomatic, security
and military benefits, Israel hopes
Ankara will become an important
energy client once its gas fields in
the Mediterranean are fully harnessed.
Turkey could also prove to be
a useful intelligence partner,
in particular providing Israel
with a deeper understanding
about armed groups in Syria, and
potentially brokering a long-term
ceasefire in Gaza, by way of confidence-building measures.
Abbas claims that worldwide terror linked to Palestine issue

after he told the European Parliament that worldwide terror would
come to an end once the Israeli
occupation was over.
Once the occupation ends,
terrorism will disappear, there will
be no more terrorism in the Middle East, or anywhere else in the
world, he said, to

in New York and
heads of the European Jewish Congress in Brussels
were quick to denounce the speech,
in which Abbas repeated an alleged

plan by rabbis to poison Palestinian wells.

MOST DARING MISSION
Jenni Frazer speaks to former paratrooper Noam Tamir,

one of the heroes of Israels audacious raid on Entebbe
Israelis celebrate the safe return of all but four of the Air France passengers from Uganda in July 1976
fter 40 years, Israels daring raid on Entebbe, Uganda, and its rescue of almost
100 hostages, has become the stuff of
myth and legend. And that is not least because
the only IDF soldier who died was Yoni Netanyahu, elder brother of the man who is today
Israels prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu.
But this years landmark anniversary has
brought back all kinds of memories, some still
very painful, for those who were in Entebbe on
4 July 1976. Among them is the former paratrooper Noam Tamir, today chief executive of a
UK healthcare company, but then a 21-year-old
kibbutznik and the youngest officer to take part
in the Entebbe operation.
Tamir, who was born and brought up on Kibbutz Kfar Ruppin in the north of Israel, had a
good start to his army career: after a battery of
mental and physical tests he opted for one of
the elite squads attached to the infantry
brigade. Men from these three squads Sayeret Golani (Tamirs unit), Sayeret Matkal and
Sayeret Tzanhanim with their superior training (and, incidentally, better food than the rest
of the army) provided the 200-strong force
sent to Entebbe.
On 27 June 1976, an Air France plane with
248 passengers was hijacked by two members
of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and two members of the German
Revolutionary Cells. The flight was en route to
Paris from Tel Aviv, but was diverted first to
Athens.
On board the flight was a young woman from
Manchester, Patricia Martell, going home to sit
shiva for her mother, Pearl Hyman. Desperate to
make the shiva Mrs Martell, who had been married for just six weeks, and was a nurse, faked
the symptoms of a miscarriage and the hijackers
let her off the plane at Benghazi, in Libya, before it continued to Uganda. Mrs Martells debriefing by Mossad operatives in Benghazi
saved many lives, says Noam Tamir, as she was
able to tell the Israelis much about the hijackers.
But there was still much that they did not
know. We heard, vaguely, on the radio that
there had been a hijacking, recalled Noam
Tamir, but when on Thursday [1 July] we were
told there was a mission for which we were
needed, we didnt know what we were going to
do. Some buses came and took us to a base in
the middle of the country where no one could
get in or out, it was in lockdown.
For two frantic days, while the Israeli cabinet
argued internally about what to do, Tamir and
his fellow soldiers did their best to simulate what

using as a model lines in the sand to represent airport buildings. And the first dress rehearsal, remembers Tamir wryly, didnt go well
at all.
Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who was initially
against a military option, visited the closed
base. Tamir, as an officer, was able to attend the

planning meetings. People ask, why were three
squads sent to Entebbe, why not just one? The
answer is, the risk was so high, if we were discovered en route by, for example, the Egyptians, we ran the risk of having an entire squad
wiped out. This way we balanced things out.
According to Professor Saul David, who last
year published an authoritative account of the
Entebbe operation, Rabin and his defence minister, Shimon Peres, should have been working
together. But these fierce political rivals spent
that week 27 June to 4 July 1976 disagreeing on strategy. Rabin wanted to give in to the
terrorists demands the exchange of hostages
for 40 Palestinian extremists if there was no
military option; Peres thought that would encourage more terror.
Rabin gave in, and authorised the rescue
after the terrorists extension of their deadline
from 1-4 July gave Israeli military chiefs
enough time to come up with a viable plan.
Noam Tamir paints a terrifying picture of the
Hercules plane in which he and the other Israeli
soldiers made their outward journey. We were
obliged to fly so low that it was incredibly
bumpy and we all vomited, every one of us.
Every member of the team had been given a
specific task. Tamirs team was a back-up squad:
In case the first force [led by Yoni Netanyahu]
did not manage to kill all the terrorists, we were
to be the second wave, kill the hijackers and
then evacuate the hostages into our plane, Hercules 4.
To assist them, Tamir and Netanyahu were
each given a new secret communications device. I was to land and make contact with Yoni
to see if they needed us or not. But when Tamir
tried to make contact, there was no answer, as
Yoni Netanyahu had already been shot and injured by Ugandan troops.
At first Tamirs team did not know what to do;
there was shooting all around them and they
were unsure whether to advance or not. But we
went in and started pulling the hostages out,
helping them to walk and putting them on the
plane. Also on the plane was the fatally
wounded Netanyahu, as doctors worked frantically to try to save him. There were other dead
on the flight, too: three hostages, Jean-Jacques
Mimouni, Pasco Cohen and Ida Borochovitch
were killed in the cross-fire between the Israelis
and Ugandan soldiers, Mimouni in particular because he stood up despite yells of get down!
from Israeli rescuers.
After a nine-hour flight back to Israel Tamir
and his crew were taken off the planes at a military airbase before the welcome arrival at BenGurion for the hostages. And for 20 years, he
says, they were prevented from talking about
the details of this astonishing rescue operation.
Instead, they went straight back to training,
as the echoes of the raid on Entebbe reverberated around the world.
Noam Tamir, who is a governor of the Hebrew
University, will discuss the Entebbe operation on
13 July at a private event for the legacy section
of the British Friends of the Hebrew University.

Post-Brexit UK must not

turn into Little England
HOW TO sum up the tumultuous events of the past seven
days? First and foremost, security is once again paramount,
and sits atop Labours shenanigans or Tory divisions in order of
priority.
Our community fears a slide
towards racism and intolerance
more than most. But as verbal
and physical attacks on recent
immigrants in recent days show,
some have it a lot worse.
We should offer what help we
can. Groups like the Community
Security Trust need to reach out
now more than ever, not least
because this was us once.
Whichever way you voted,
there are dark days ahead.
Change can be good a catalyst but uncertainty can be
exploited. In austerity-hit middle
England, economic malcontent
could easily morph into blame
and hatred. Trust us, we know.
This is a time for leaders to
lead. MPs condemnation of
racism is formulaic and insufficient. Selfies of Sadiq Khan with
Jewish and Christian leaders
are better, but gestural.

Electronic petitions are ten-apenny. Bland interfaith statements preach only to the
converted.
We need something huge
and symbolic to show the
outside world that we value
those from other cultures and
climes, to show that Brexit was
a vote to leave the EU, not a
vote to close our doors and
hate anyone who isnt British
born and bred.
Perhaps we need something
akin to the Statue of Liberty, an
icon of independence and
welcoming sight to immigrants.
Perhaps at St Katherines
Docks, where so many Jews
came ashore, or at Heathrow or
Gatwick, as part of the new
runway development.
Our own open-arms icon,
designed and built by first or
second-generation
immigrants, would send a very clear
message.
Whatever we do, its time to
think outside a box which is fast
becoming Little England.

I was disgusted to see once again that
a group of frum adults and children got
into difficulty during a trip to the Kent
coast (Jewish News, 9 June). It is the third
time something like this has happend in as
many years. They might be frum, but they
must have cow dung in their heads! Let
them remember, it was the RNLI, not
Hashem, who saved their lives. As an
Orthodox person, I am embarrassed and
ashamed. Do they have a death wish?

WINSTONS RECORD
I cannot take issue with my good friend
Rabbi Debbie Young-Somers choice of
Professor Robert Winston as her Jewish
hero (Jewish News, 16 June).
She probably wont know of the one blot
on his copybook, which, as a Reform rabbi,
might not please her so much. In a feature
on the Jewish community in The Daily
Telegraph in 2001, Professor Winston was
asked if he thought of Reform Jews as
having an inferior religion.
He is reported as looking thoroughly
embarrassed and saying, Well, yes I
do, and also that there were occasions
when I feel more comfortable with nonJews than with them.
Not a statement, or point of view,
of which he might on consideration have
been too proud.

ANTI-SEMITISM WILL
ALWAYS BE WITH US
Im more than a little fed up with selfapologists whining: Im not anti-Semitic;
Im anti-Zionist.
When I started school, aged five, in
1945 (before Israel became a state),
I experienced anti-Semitism not only from
classmates (yes, five-year-olds!), but, more
distressingly, from teachers.
At the age of six I was badly beaten up
by a boy older and bigger than me, who
called me a dirty Yid.
When I was 12, a classmate called
Reginald stood on a bench in the playground and harangued the school about
why Jewish people should be thrown
out of England. He sat next to me in
class!
During the 1980s, my wife and
I thought we might like to learn to play
bowls. We applied to become members
of a club in Bounds Green.
A couple of days later, one of our
neighbours, a member of the club, came
to our door and told us: We think youd
be happier in a different bowls club.
We just smiled and said: OK. No
problem. We understand.
Ironically, every year since then, at that
same clubs village green May Day fair, Im
approached by a smiling woman, who
hands me a leaflet which states: Come
along for a free days trial. Well make you
welcome.
I always take the leaflet, smile politely
and say thank you.
If, God forbid, Israel ceased to exist,
anti-Semitism would still be with us. It
always has and, tragically, always will be.

VERSION OF JUSTICE
Justice, Justice shalt thou pursue
(Deuteronomy 16.20). Through Justice
will Zion be redeemed. (Isaiah 1.27).
Israel bashers, such as Jews for Justice
for Palestinians and some at the University
and College Union see the situation from
one perspective. But there are others.
Under Israeli control, Palestinians have
been deprived of what is considered
justice in parts of the Arab world, to wit
amputations, beheadings, hanging from
cranes, being thrown off a high roof,
stonings, female genital mutilation,
primary schoolgirls married to men old
enough to be their grandfathers, 1,000 or
even 2,000 lashes for criticising an Islamic
government, legalised rape for women
not covering their hair, being burnt alive,
crucified...
Hamas, Hezbollah, Isil, the Taliban and
other Islamist groups operating in the
Near East consider some or all such practices to be justice.

IN MEMORY OF THE
JEWS OF PLASZOW
I recently returned from Krakow, where I
visited Auschwitz and the Schindler
Museum. Another place on the outskirts of
Krakow I feel is almost forgotten is Plaszow,
the camp where the Jews from the ghetto of
Krakow were sent. Nothing remains of the
camp over which Amon Goeth presided
except for a tall concrete memorial and a
plaque erected later to the many Jews who
died there. I was very affected by this site
and have written a poem in memory of those
Jews, which I would like to share.
Birds are singing over Plaszow now
There are no longer traces of the pain
Where once a camp was built
By prisoners whose hands were soft
Who shared no guilt
But that they all were Jews
Men women children
Driven from their homes on foot
To Plaszows fields nearby
Forced to build barracks
Dig ditches erect fences
A concentration camp
Made to toil
Laying heavy metal lines
With blistered hands and
bleeding hearts

Five statements Labour must

address to regain integrity
WITH THE sensational events of the Brexit vote and
turmoil in both the Conservative and Labour parties, you could have been forgiven for forgetting
that Shami Chakrabarti is set to publish her eagerly
anticipated anti-Semitism inquiry today. In advance
of the reports release, Ive highlighed five statements Labour must robustly challenge if it is to be
taken seriously as an anti-racist party.
1. Hitler supported Zionism
This is the sort of history that has got Ken Livingstone into all sorts of trouble. And rightly so. First,
it is not true. Writing in 1925 in Mein Kampf, Hitler
said Zionism would not so much create a state as
a central organisation for their [the Jews] international world cheating. This is hardly support. The
1933 Transfer (or Haavara) Agreement is not proof
of collusion. The agreement allowed Nazi Germany
to get around a global Jewish boycott, but it meant
that around 60,000 Jews were able to leave Nazi
Germany. To say that this is some evidence of
common cause would be like saying that paying
a ransom to save a hostage is evidence that the
hostage-taker supports the victims family. Ken Livingstone seems hell-bent on giving pseudo-intellectual justification for anti-Semitism.
2. Anti-Semitism allegations are all just ways of attacking supporters of the Palestinians.
There is all the difference in the world between sup-
porting the Palestinians and indulging in crude antiSemitic stereotypes, talking about Jewish conspiracies, celebrating the Holocaust or supporting
terrorism against Jews. Luton councillor Aysegul
Gurbuz called Hitler the greatest man in history.
Kensington and Chelsea councillor Beinazir
Lasharie was suspended for saying Jews were behind 9/11 and Islamic State. There have been at
least two dozen suspensions from the Labour Party
because of people doing things like the above, not
from just supporting the Palestinians. It has to stop.
3. Anti-Semitism allegations are just Tories or embittered old Blairites attacking Corbyn
Jeremy Corbyn cant be blamed for examples
being found which predated his leadership. But
for an anti-racist party, the main problem cant be
that people are finding these examples, it should
be that they were there to find in the first place.
If the party is to stop suspicions about the decay
of its moral compass, nobody should be satisfied
with just calling themselves anti-racist. Individuals have to act in an anti-racist way as well.
4. People reporting anti-Semitism should be punished as traitors to Labours cause.
A new website, calling itself Free Speech on Israel,
is promoting motions at local Labour branches
which ask Labour to call to order people who
raise concerns about anti-Semitism. This is very
dangerous. In no civilised movement should people reporting abuse be subject to this kind of suspicion or victimisation. This is true for domestic
abuseand it is true for racist abuse. Labour needs
to create a safe space for reports of abuse to come
forward. Of course, such allegations need to be investigated fairly and transparently, but nobody can
allow a culture which deters the reporting of abuse.
5. Anti-Semitism applies to all semitic peoples.
Why should Jews have exclusive ownership?
This is curious and pernicious. Curious because the
phrase anti-Semitism was coined by Wilhelm Marr
in 1879 to refer precisely to his hatred of Jews, so
it is simply a fact that anti-Semitism does refer to
hatred of Jews and not others. Pernicious because
this is almost always brought up in response to allegations of anti-Semitism in a way that seems designed to bury the issue. Lets be clear: racism
against Jews, Muslims, Arabs or anyone else is
equally unacceptable, but they all take slightly different forms. To tackle anti-Semitism is not to deny
racism against others. We must not allow a culture
which denies the problem, punishes victims or
gives permission to prejudice. Only when Labour
has fought these sentiments, can it fully reclaim its
mantle as a proudly anti-racist party.

A true friend and ally in the

Thatcher and Blair mould
AS DAVID Cameron said in his resignation speech,
the EU referendum was far bigger than any one
politician. As the markets plummeted amid
questions over Britains future relationship with its
biggest trading partner, the decision to leave is the
start of a process, the result of which even the most
ardent Brexiteer cannot guarantee. The first, second and third things in the new prime ministers in
tray will be to negotiate the best deal for Britains
exit of the EU and entry into uncharted territory.
But for Britains Jewish community, this is nevertheless a moment to reflect on a premiership
that will be remembered alongside that of Margaret Thatcher and Tony Blair for its warmth towards Anglo-Jewry and Israel. While communal
organisations stayed clear of the Brexit debate,
statements of appreciation for Cameron havent
been hard to come by.
His time in Downing Street coincided with terror attacks on Jews in Toulouse, Brussels and
Paris and unprecedented unease in the community here in the wake of the Gaza conflict. But
Cameron repeatedly demonstrated he understood the threat faced by world Jewry and,
moreover, that demonisation of Jews and the
Jewish state could often be seen as the first sign
of extremism that threatens wider society.
It was his government that funded guards at
Jewish schools as one of its first acts in office
and added an extra 11million of security fund-
ing last year. Gerald Ronson a man who knows

a thing or two about tackling hate said then:
After a lifetime of fighting anti-Semitism, Ive
never seen such a level of support.
His admiration for survivors of the Holocaust and
personal commitment to ensuring the horrors are
not forgotten were given practical expression in his
Holocaust Commission. The new national memorial
and state-of-the-art learning centre in the heart of
Westminster will be, as the Holocaust Educational
Trust pointed out, his legacy, even if he will now not
be attending its opening as prime minister.
The outgoing PM has become one of Israels
greatest international friends, perhaps the greatest
after Canadas Stephen Harper was given his
marching orders in that countrys election last year.
But it was a rocky start as far as Israels supporters
were concerned when he described Gaza as a
prison camp, and failed to once mention Hamas,
in a speech in Ankara during his first summer in the
job. However, he quickly did what his predecessor
had promised by changing the law of universal
jurisdiction to prevent it being exploited to arrest
Israeli officials and other foreign visitors.
But it was his stance during the conflict between
Israel and Hamas in 2014 a position criticised by
the opposition and some on his own side that
means he will be remembered as an all-weather
friend. So, too, his position on boycotts including
on countering boycott, divestment and sanctions
movements from councils and public bodies, even

if this boiled down to reiterating existing guidelines rather than banning boycotts.
With hours until last weeks vote, a buoyant
sounding Cameron even kept a date to address
Jewish Cares annual dinner. It now seems a fitting
measure of the cross-party appreciation of his support that it was Lord Levy, a Labour peer, who led
the plaudits to the Conservative leader that night.
The appreciation was mutual, with Cameron saying
Jewish functions were among the most patriotic he
has attended and hailing the charity as the very definition of the Big Society he championed. Also
present was outgoing Tory chairman Lord Feldman,
who has also played a role in ensuring the communitys concerns are understood in government.
Many will now be questioning whether
Cameron should ever have conceded this referendum; whether a vote he believed could end in
such catastrophic consequences should it go the
wrong way was worth the risk.
Even those who backed remain must now
hope the Brexiteers were right all along; that although the immediate signs were less than reassuring, what was dubbed Project Fear was just
that and nothing more.
Its not easy to look beyond the seismic events
of the past few days. But whatever your views on
the issue that will define his leadership, our community has much to be thankful to Cameron for.

Abbas on EU referendum day
LAST WEEK the UK electorate voted by a slender majority to withdraw from the European
Union. Already, the recriminations have started
against those who dared to defy the European
elite and much of the British political class.
Despite some nasty elements of xenophobia in UKIPs campaign, Leave supporters have
been collectively tarnished by association,
with accusations of racism, intolerance and
bigotry. Many are puzzled at how the EU, a
Nobel Prize-winning bastion of multiculturalism and progressive values could suffer such
an irreversible body blow at the hands of the
British people.
On the same day as the referendum,
the European Parliament hosted Mahmoud
Abbas. During his speech, the Palestinian
leader blamed Israel for the recent upsurge of
terrorism that had killed dozens of civilians.
The absence of a two-state solution, he said,
gave a pretext to those who commit terrorism
in the name of religion. He continued: Once
this occupation ends, those pretexts will disappear and there will be no more terrorism in
the Middle East nor elsewhere in the world.
The idea that Israeli occupation breeds
global terror is an egregious falsehood. Worldwide Islamist terrorism has an ideology and
rhythm all of its own. It is driven by a fanatical
desire to re-establish a caliphate and impose
Sharia law in every facet of social and economic life. Islamists believe that secular states,
values and practices are inherently corrupt and
un-Islamic and must therefore be destroyed to
bring on their dystopian future.

Israel is but one of many barriers to the
caliphate and it will be hated, regardless of
whether it occupies the West Bank. Moreover,
Palestinian terrorism has often increased in the
absence of occupation, most noticeably in the
upsurge of murderous violence from Gaza after
2005 that has so blighted Israeli communities.
In any case, Abbas rejected the chance to create a Palestinian state in 2008, just as his predecessor, Yasser Arafat, had done in 2000-1.
Abbas falsehoods continued. The PA chief
accused rabbis in Israel of telling their government to poison Palestinian water supplies in
order to murder the innocent. Isnt that clear
incitement, he said, to commit mass killings
against the Palestinian people? According to
officials in the PA, a Rabbi Mlma, chairman of
the Council of Rabbis in the West Bank settlements, had issued the call. But no such rabbi
could be found and there was no rabbinic
organisation by that name.
The PA leaders remarks, later retracted,
were justly condemned as a blood libel
reminiscent of those that have surfaced so regularly throughout Jewish history.
But the damage was done, as various media
outlets led with the allegation.
So how did MEPs respond to these assertions? Did they stamp their feet in protest
or stage a walk out? Did they threaten to
rescind funding for the PA if such hate speech
was repeated? No, these alleged bastions
of tolerance and anti-racism gave Abbas a
standing ovation.
A man who had repeated one of the most
pernicious tropes of anti-Semitism, about how
Jews were poisoning their neighbours water
supplies, was feted as a hero rather than
treated like a racist pariah. But many of those
same parliamentarians would have lamented
the xenophobic Brexit vote only hours later.
Now, it is obviously true that Europes love
affair with Palestinian radicalism is not the
most relevant reason to quit the EU.
There were a host of more pertinent reasons
for withdrawal: a desire for more democracy,
sovereignty and self-government, long-term
economic considerations and an aversion to
federalism. But this outrageous indulgence for
Abbas, and the continued funding of his PA,
shatters the illusion that European institutions
have some monopoly on virtue or progressive
values.
After all, this is the same EU that carved out
a sordid refugee deal with Turkeys Recep
Tayyip Erdogan despite, the Turkish president
declaring that democracy, freedom and the
rule of law were of no value. It also paid off
former Libyan Prime Minister Muammar
Gaddafi to prevent Libyan migrants reaching
Europe. In both cases, the Eurocats turned a
blind eye to the abuses and excesses of these
dictators. But in the case of the PA, it openly
indulges an anti-Semitic dictatorship.
It may be worth remembering all of this
the next time a Eurosceptic is accused of
pandering to bigotry.

One big issue, two opposite opinions...

GIVING ISRAELS leading warmonger
the keys to the defence ministry will be
studied in future decades as the ultimate
act of friendly fire in peacetime. Avigdor
Lieberman could scarcely believe his luck
last month when he became political
master of the IDF. To him, the dream of
war is never far away. A fourth operation
in Gaza is inevitable, just as a third
Lebanon war is inevitable, he said last
year. If it be willed, so will it be done.
He shows no signs of mellowing with
age. On the subject of Gaza, where war
can most easily be made, he told Army
Radio in 2013 that Israel needs to seriously consider conquering the Strip and
carry out a thorough cleansing. What
he meant by thorough cleansing is
unclear, and no less chilling for being so.
The same could be said of his 2009
comments at Bar-Ilan University, when
he appeared to advocate the use of
nuclear weapons. We must break the
will of Hamas to keep fighting We
must fight Hamas just like the US did
with Japan in WWII. Cue the shudder.
In Lebanon, Lieberman says containing Hezbollah is not enough, and last
year called for a non-proportional
response to an isolated attack.
Dismissive of rules such as those
governing military conduct, he appears
simply to disregard them.
Sure, hell be constrained by the security cabinet, and sure, this is a unique
country, which has had to fight to survive
(calling someone a hawk in Israel is like
calling someone religious in the Vatican).
But Lieberman, who advocates
beheading militant Palestinians with an
axe, is no mere hawk. He is to the region
what the velociraptor was to Jurassic
Park. Its an apt analogy: his law is that
of the jungle, which says that, if
attacked, you hit your enemy so hard he
never again dreams of attacking you.
Unfortunately, thats been Israels
modus operandi for decades, and is
consistently slammed by friends and
foes alike for the excessive suffering it
inflicts on civilians. Now hes in the position to step it up a notch or three. For
Avigdor, hundreds of dead children in
Gaza wasnt enough. For those left
defending Israel abroad, it may soon be.
BUT...
WHAT IF hes right? What if Israels military operations to-date have been less
final than they need to be? Clearly, Israels
past actions left both Hamas and
Hezbollah intact. Didnt George Bush
(Snr) do the same with Saddam Husseins

Baath Party in Iraq the first time round?

Didnt he live to regret it? Likewise in
Afghanistan, where the U.S. military has
withdrawn, and where the Taliban
thrives? If you dont remove the whole
tumour, whats left regrows.
Theres a famous scene in The West
Wing when Martin Sheens President
Bartlett asks his military chiefs what is the

virtue of a proportional response. Theyre
stumped. The chiefs ask what else is
there. A disproportional response, he
says. Let the word ring forth that if you
kill even one American, we dont come
back with a proportional response. We
come back with total disaster.
That's Lieberman's plan. The world

would go nuts, but Israels enemies
would be annihilated, and those that
werent would shelve any plans for future
aggression. The regions rulers, who
respond only to power, would meanwhile
take careful note as to who was living
next door.

Chazak dines out on 300k
A charity seeking to pass on Jewish heritage from countries

including Spain, Portugal, India, Yemen, Aden, Syria, Egypt, Iraq,
Persia, Tunisia, and Morocco to young Sephardic Jews in the UK
raised 300,000 at its inaugural gala dinner in London. Chazak,
founded by Rabbi Shlomo Farhi and Rabbi Moshe Levy five
years ago, told the 350 guests that it had held 225 events,
given 1,000 lectures and taken 650 people on life-changing
journeys abroad. Rabbi Farhi said the group was now
appealing to a broader base, adding that Chazaks carefully
pitched vibe now attracts Sephardim, Ashkenazim and every
type and stripe of Jew in between.

Jewish Cares 20k day of fun

A record 1,600 visitors enjoyed a fun day out at Jewish Cares
Princess Alexandra Home in Stanmore. Organised by The PAH
special events committee, it raised nearly 20,000 to help
enhance the lives of residents. Families, Jewish Care supporters
and people across the community tucked into a barbeque and
were entertained by dance troupes and school choirs. Children
chose from bouncy castles, fair rides, laser quest, cake decorating
and face painting, to name a few activities. Speaking after the
event, chair of the PAH special events committee Brian Eisenberg
said: Im delighted to have raised nearly 20,000 this year. The fun
day has raised more than 140,000 to date and we were
delighted to see even more people from the community enjoy
themselves. It was a huge success thanks to the work of the
committee, the Hebrew Order of David, volunteers and, of course,
all the people who came on the day.

Deborah Azzopardi about
her recent focus on men
for her new exhibition
ot all guys can shower and come out

looking beautiful in their Levis. Those are
the men I wanted to capture the real
men, giggles artist Deborah Azzopardi.
Her distinctive images large-scale, vibrant,
voyeuristic and, above all, humorous celebrate the drama of everyday life. But, for the
first time in her 30-year career, Azzopardi has
moved her focus onto men.
A series of new acrylic paintings, which
have just gone on display at The Cynthia Corbett Gallery in Cork Street, London, attempt
to uncover all the foibles of the male sex, from
changing clothes to tying up their shoelaces
and practising golf in the bedroom.
The north London-based artist, whose painting Sssshhh was reproduced by IKEA and
became a global success, tells me she wanted
to depict all the funny things that men do
in her new artworks.

Normally I just have a giggle at myself,
explains Azzopardi, who grew up in Golders
Green. I have done men before, but in
different ways. This is a little deeper, although
it doesnt seem deep because its also
playful.
Speaking about her work, Late Again, which
depicts a man struggling to get into his jeans,
the 58-year-old says it takes a wry look at the
differences between men and women.
You look and you see the jeans and a
shirt and a tie and the shirt matches the
socks. Is it planned or unplanned? Is he late
and what is he getting dressed for? Guys
are like that though. They seem very
organised.
I always say, wheres my lipstick, wheres my
hairbrush, wheres this or that? Men just tap
their pockets theres my wallet and there are

my keys.
Azzopardis journey as an artist began in
her 20s, when she became desperately ill
with meningitis. Following her recovery, she
decided to quit her job in retail and put her
energies into her two passions her family and
her painting, despite not having formal training.
With their bright colours and cartoon-like
imagery, many have compared her works to
pioneering pop artists of the 1960s. Two years
ago, when The Cynthia Corbett Gallery hosted
her first solo show, art critic Estelle Lovatt proclaimed that America has Lichtenstein, we
have Azzopardi, a statement that Azzopardi
regards as a wonderful compliment. But she
remains a little uneasy over categorising her
work as pop art.
I called my style pop art only because I
needed a term that was easy for people to
understand, says the dedicated mother-ofthree. Now Ive been painting for so long,
I just think its my own style. Im not sure its
truly pop art as it used to be.

At their largest, her works measure around
5ft by 3ft and can take around three months
to complete on an easel that cleverly tilts in different directions. I like the impact when
they are large. I dont like little things, she
reveals.
As for the inspirations behind her ideas, the
talented 58-year-old tells me: I have a lot of
muses; they are just people that I know, friends
and family.
Everybody has something thats lovely
about them. All my muses are normal, everyday people. Models dont interest me, because
they are slim and I think all the bumps and
curves make real people.
She confesses to painting all day, every day,
in between phone calls and running about,
and works from one of the two studios at
home.
Im very neat, very tidy and very organised.
When people come in, they dont believe Im
an artist, because the only mess is on me my
clothes, my hair, my skin. Every artist will say
that they dont have one item of clothing that
doesnt have paint on, laughs Azzopardi.
Alongside her new paintings, the exhibition
will also feature the original paintings she created for IKEA in 2005, which have never before
been shown in public.
While the prints have sold in more than 50
countries, the originals are much sought-after
by collectors and have commanded prices well
into the tens of thousands of pounds. Their
success is still something that takes the artist
by surprise.
Did I think they would be this popular? Not
at all. I thought it was fun, just a fun thing
to do, reveals Azzopardi. To think that the
prints were selling for 9.99 and now someone
can own the original is quite something. To
have an original piece of art is wonderful;
theres nothing quite like it.

Francine Wolfisz takes a family break and

discovers the beauty of the Dorset coast
hoever thought of climbing a cliff with

a buggy? Traversing my way down a
gravel-filled path bordered by crumbling limestone rocks, Im filled with a sense of
exhilaration but also downright anxiety as
our two young children nimbly bound their way
down the coast.
But my goodness, if you can withstand a few
heart-stopping moments of steep inclines and
88 steps in a downward spiral, the breathtaking
beauty of Durdle Door, near Lulworth in Dorset,
is really all worth it.
The quaintly-named Durdle Door, which is a
UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a natural limestone arch formed around 140 million years ago
that resembles the neck of a great dinosaur
plunging into the chilly waters nearby somewhat
apt given that we are, after all, visiting a part of
the Jurassic Coast, a 95-mile stretch of coast that
begins in nearby Studland Bay and stretches all
the way to Exmouth in East Devon.
As the name suggests, the Jurassic Coast
attracts hordes of fossil hunters hoping to
find remnants from our prehistoric past. Further
along the coast, around nine miles from
Lulworth, lies Kimmeridge Bay.
The children loved scrambling over the scenic
rock pools and sifting through the fallen shale to
spot a fossil or two. That day, we were in luck and
found ammonites and other ancient marine life,
much to my daughters delight.

Our amateur efforts pale in comparison,
however, to the Etches Collection, comprising
2,000 fossils, which will go on display at the
Museum of Jurassic Marine Life, due to open in
Kimmeridge later this year.
We continued to make our way along the coast
towards Swanage and the Isle of Purbeck, much
of which is designated as an Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty. Standing aloft in the distance are
the remains of Corfe Castle, originally built by
William the Conquerer in the 11th century,
attacked during the English Civil War in 1643 and
was torn down on the orders of parliament three
years later.
Our legs still aching from the epic climb of
Durdle Door, we decided to tackle the 200 steps
of Corfe Castle another day and leave it to the
200,000 or so visitors who come to this popular
National Trust site every year.
The drive from here to Swanage is a short one,
but you can also travel in style via the restored
heritage steam railway, which operates throughout the year and has a stop close to Corfe Castle.
Swanage, lined with pretty cottages made from
the local Purbeck stone and ornamental ironwork,
has all the attractions of a traditional Victorian
seaside town and, like other coastal destinations,
really comes alive for families during the summer
months, including the impressive annual Swanage
Regatta and Carnival, which this year takes

place from 30 July to 6 August.
Theres no shortage of places to stay in
this picturesque town, and we opted for
10 Broadleys, a modern penthouse apartment available from Wyke Dorset Cottages.
The company offers a wide range of holiday
properties, from quaint cottages to larger
family homes.
Our accommodation for our four-night
stay was perfectly situated, just 15 minutes
walk away from the beach and main town.
Inside, the coastal decor around the twobedroom apartment, which features a roof top
terrace with panoramic views, gave a light and
spacious feel and we were very impressed by just
how thoughtful the owners had been from the
helpful manual on places to visit nearby to the
much-appreciated shortbread biscuits, bread and
milk left for our arrival.
The kitchen, lounge and dining area were also
well-equipped with all the mod cons including
Wi-Fi and an Xbox, much to my childrens delight
and the owners had even left a selection of
family-friendly DVDs, games and books for use
during our stay.
10 Broadleys was a great base from which
to explore the immediate area and, of course,
further afield, including day trips to nearby
Bournemouth and Poole, where there are mod-

estly-sized Jewish communities and the larger

supermarkets have dedicated kosher sections.
The best and quickest way to travel from the
Isle of Purbeck to Bournemouth is via the chain
ferry, which runs from Sandbanks to Studland.
There is an alternative route via the winding,
coastal road, but it can add miles onto your journey and can at times make for an uncomfortable
ride.
Always a favourite with my children,
Bournemouth boasts a seven-mile stretch of
award-winning beaches and plenty of familyfriendly activities.
For those looking to visit in the coming months,
look out for live acoustic music, markets and art
demonstrations in Bournemouth Square from the
beginning of July, as well as the popular annual
Air Festival in mid-August.

IN ONE of the latest terror attacks to hit the headlines, a
young Islamist entered a public
place and killed 49 people and
injured 53 in Orlando.
Atrocities like these are
encouraged
by
terrorist
organisations such as ISIS and
Hamas. Victims have included
Jews, partying young Westerners and, in this particular event,
mainly gay men.
The irony of a self-hating, repressed gay Muslim killing gay
Americans at a gay bar he used
frequently cannot be lost on us.
Can there be something to say
from a Torah perspective on
this matter?
The reason some Muslim extremists can rationalise such
murder is they have little and
only recent experience as a religious grouping of living in any
numbers outside Muslim countries. We Jews have been
doing it for 2,500 years.
When Pirkei Avot tell us to
pray for the peace of the country, when the Gemara tells us
that dina dmedina dina, the law
of the land is the law, we understand that we have to respect

the law of the country and to
maintain it. I am certain there is
Islamic jurisprudence to equal
this, but it is not as deeply ingrained through practice. That
comes with time.

As for their being gay
a shrill fascist might ask
whether I, as an Orthodox
rabbi, shouldnt rejoice in the
demise of sinners?

THE JEWISH people were poised to enter the

Land of Israel, promised by God to their ancestors, less than two years after their freedom from
Egyptian slavery. At this juncture, Moses dispatches 12 men, all of them prestigious leaders,
to survey the Holy Land and report back on its
terrain, produce and inhabitants.
Forty days later, these spies returned bearing
samples of the land's luscious fruit, but with a
negative report claiming that it is unconquerable
and uninhabitable. Despite the protestations of
two isolated voices to the contrary, the people accept with despair the false account and destine
their entire generation to perish in the wilderness.
Not only must we question the spies motivation
for providing a negative report, but also ask how a
people, who had witnessed first-hand Gods miracles and revelation, could so readily accept it as fact?
Frank Koch in Proceedings, the magazine of the
Naval Institute, shares an illuminating experience
that may shed some light on this mystery.
Two battleships assigned to the training
squadron had been at sea on manoeuvres in
heavy weather for several days. I was serving on
the lead battleship and was on watch on the
bridge as night fell. The visibility was poor with
patchy fog, so the captain remained on the bridge
sinned.
Moreover, these are human
beings made in Gods image.
What gives any random religious zealot the right to kill in
the name of His law? None of us
are on the spiritual level of Pinchas.
It should be remarked that
we, too, have our crazies. How
very different is the man who
killed those poor people in Orlando from the Jewish zealot
who killed Shira Banki, a 15year-old teenager fatally
stabbed at last years Gay Pride
parade in Jerusalem?
We note there are a million
times more Muslims in the
world and in the USA they have
access to rifles.
Our own community does
not make it easy to be openly
gay. We are not all welcoming
to our LGBTQI friends.
Our Orthodox religious rules
mean we cannot accommodate
aspects of modern life like gay
marriage but this should not
stop us from reaching out.
On this matter, none of us
should be smug or complacent.

Is it steady or moving astern? the captain
called out. Lookout replied: Steady captain,
which meant we were on a dangerous collision
course with that ship.
The captain then called to the signalman:
Signal that ship: We are on a collision course,
advise you change course 20 degrees.
Back came a signal: Advisable for you to
change course 20 degrees.
The captain said: Send, Im a captain, change
course 20 degrees.
Im a seaman second-class came the reply.
Youd better change course 20 degrees.
By that time the captain was furious. He spat
out: Send, Im a battleship. Change course 20
degrees.
Back came the flashing light: Im a lighthouse.
We changed course.
The spies concocted a story and the people
accepted it for one simple reason they were
resistant to change. They had become so accustomed to a miraculous existence where their
every need was provided by God that the
thought of their lives being transformed upon
entry into the land was viewed, not as a welcome
opportunity, but as a terrifying threat.
To a greater or lesser degree, we all face that
dilemma. We know that if we do not change, we do
not grow, and if we do not grow, then we are not
really living. As John F Kennedy put it: Change is
the law of life and those who look only to the past
or present are certain to miss the future.
Change is challenging, but we must embrace it
because it allows us to achieve new things, reach
new goals and ultimately makes us feel truly alive.

OUR COMMUNITIES are the life-blood of UK

Jewry. They have the potential to enrich the lives of
their members and transform an area into a thriving
hub of activity. They can be places of inspiration,
education and, friendship. They are run by teams of
lay-leaders who provide the impetus to our communities.
Working in partnership with the rabbinic team
and professional staff and dedicating their free
time to serving the community, synagogue leaders
are driven to engage and enthuse the local Jewish
people in the area. Take a look at a shul website
and beyond religious services you might find baby
music groups in Hebrew, interfaith and social action programmes, education centres and even
pop-up restaurants. All have been planned by a
committed group of volunteers in their free time.
It stands to reason that the more diverse a synagogue's lay leadership, the richer its offering. We
are listening to younger members and non-members, building a forum of younger activists and
looking at new leadership roles that allow a range
of female and male voices to be heard.
The numbers of women leaders within our communities is often discussed. Through my work, I
have been lucky enough to meet the many women
who are taking the helm in communities.
There has been an increase in women taking up
leadership roles across US communities and I am

working hard to ensure that continues. This year,
12 of our communities have female chairs.
Of course, I recognise that its not easy for
women to take on these positions, particularly
when work and family commitments can sometimes seem time crippling.
However, the numbers highlight the strides our
communities are making while we are also exploring new governance models that allow flexibility and prevents roles within the community
becoming all-encompassing.
Dont write off our synagogue lay leaders as
event planners or building managers. Many feel a
responsibility to build and sustain Jewish life in
their areas. Their vision for the future of their communities, shared with their rabbinic leaders, goes
far, far beyond the shul walls.
Our Inspired Jewish Leadership conference this
Sunday is designed to support our current leaders
and build a pipeline of new lay leaders for our communities. There are no quick fixes. However, the
day will serve as a springboard to further leadership development and as a reflection of our commitment to our existing dedicated local leaders
The United Synagogue is changing and it is important that our leaderships are representative
and in touch with our communities. With the
launch of the USs new community Innovation
Fund, the development of community start-ups in
areas of Jewish growth and a renewed focus on
local youth provision, these are exciting times.

AS A BRITISH Jew in London, the

morning of 24 June was a rude awakening. Im rabbi to a congregation of
more than 3,000 members and barely
anyone who had spoken to me over
the European Referendum campaign
had indicated they were going to
vote leave.
This may reflect the particular
demographic of north-west London.
The national polls had been saying
the result was likely to be close, but
close in favour of remain. While sermons had been preached on the
issues as they might affect the Jewish
community at our civically engaged
synagogue, we had not taken a line
on which way to vote, as we knew
there was some diversity in opinion
that had to be respected.
Examining the results, one thing is
clear half the country in a vote with
a high turnout does not agree with
the other half. For the country to
split so evenly on such a big issue is
worrying.
The Jewish community in Britain is
concentrated in London. Of 264,000
of us, according to the 2011 census,
more than 75 percent live in London,
where the vote to remain was the
substantial majority. In the area where
almost all of the members of my synagogue live and which is the area
of the highest concentration of Jews
in the country, the Remain vote was
more than 80 percent.
Does this mean that the Jewish
community is largely on the losing

side of the argument?
We must now consider the impact
Brexit will have on our community.
Britain has always felt safe for Jews
to thrive in a multicultural, outwardlooking, welcoming society. It was a
society in which we felt connected to
the rest of the world through our
membership of the powerful and
open European Union. Now it feels
uncertain.
Leaving the EU and the process
towards it will undoubtedly have an
effect on the Jewish community.
We expect it to be harder to raise
funds for Jewish community life as the
uncertainty of the economy makes our
members naturally cautious.
The Jewish community has been
thriving with great new institutions
and synagogues being built, especially in London. But our ambition
may now be on hold.
Some are concerned about Brexit
encouraging the far-right across
Europe and possibly leading to continental European countries facing the
same disunity Britain has just shown.
A community so dedicated to
bringing up our next generation may
be worried that our childrens future,
their options for work and residence,
and their ability to study abroad has
just been constricted.
Above all, I am concerned that we
didnt really know how the rest of the
country thinks. The challenge now
is to build national unity as we move
forward into an uncertain future.

Who was there for me to add?
But then Rabbi Dr Barbara Borts
came to speak at Woodford Liberal Synagogue and immediately
proved why she is a true hero.
Born in Los Angeles in 1935,
Barbara decided at a very early
age that she wanted to be a
rabbi. It was a time when, even in
the Progressive movements, it
seemed an impossible dream.
Unlike many youthful goals,
Barbara followed hers. She studied at Leo Baeck College and,
along with Sybil Sheridan, was in

ordained in 1981 becoming
two of the first female rabbis in
Europe.
Working for Britains Movement
for Reform Judaism, she secured

TRUE LEADERS
DEVELOPING LEADERS is something any
good community, organisation or group
must do to thrive.
Britains political class is struggling to find the
leadership it needs but, within our youth movement of RSY-Netzer, I was delighted to see our
newest cohort of leaders graduate from our leadership scheme, Course Hadracha, on Sunday.
A person doesnt just become a leader
instantly and a graduation ceremony certainly isnt such a moment. But it is the culmination of a journey.
Over the last year these people have developed from Israel Tour participants, enthused
by the experience they formed part of, into
creative and knowledgeable informal educators ready to create those experiences for
others. They are not just leaders. They are
Jewish and Zionist leaders who have had the
opportunity to embrace these values into the
leaders they have become.
But what values as leaders do we learn from
the ideologies close to our hearts?
We learn from Moses that, as one graduate
said at the ceremony, it isnt just the loudest
and biggest characters who can become the
greatest leaders, but also those you may not
expect.
We learn from Nahshon of the need to put
yourself out there or, as many of the graduates put it, to be willing to look a bit silly in
order to take the lead for everyone else.
We learn from David Ben-Gurion about how
a true leader needs to be a dugma ishit to
set a personal example and live out the ideals
being professed.
Were all incredibly proud of our new leaders as they take up positions of responsibility,
shaping our movements future.
If the country doesnt find some new leadership quickly, I would happily recommend
some of ours. They have proved they have the
values and qualities it takes to be true leaders.

even more firsts. She became the
first female Reform rabbi to have
her own congregation and as
well as serving communities in the
UK and Switzerland became the
first woman rabbi in Montreal,
Canada.
As if that wasnt enough, she
also gained a doctorate in Jewish Music at Durham University,
is currently studying to become
a chazzan and is involved in
many social action projects.
Despite all these achievements, she has faced discrimination. As a female faith leader,
Barbara told us how she still has
to deal with negative and rude
comments. Thinking back to her
ordination, she recalled being

told what she was allowed, and
not allowed, to do in a synagogue as a woman rabbi.
Thankfully, times are changing,
and the rabbinate of the Progressive movements now closely reflect society as a whole. So much
so that Barbara recently published
a book co-edited with Liberal
Judaisms Rabbi Elli Tikvah Sarah
called Women Rabbis in the Pulpit: A Collection of Sermons.
The fact that there were so
many sermons to collect is a testament to pioneers like Rabbi Dr
Barbara Borts.

Not legally. You may be tempted to try it, but I can tell you
endless horror-stories about inexperienced website owners
who blunder into trouble that way.
You wont know who owns the image, or what their terms are
for third-party use. At worst, the result could be a truly extortionate demand for years of back-payments for unlicensed
exposure perhaps many thousands, just for one picture.
And if you think nobodys going to notice, think again. This
is a massive industry, with specialist bureaus equipped with
advanced software that can scan the net for duplicated images. It just isnt worth the risk.
Dealing direct with a photographer is one option, but you
never know when those images may be sold-on without your
knowledge. Short of going out and taking your own photos,
the safest way is to use one of the better-known image banks
like Shutterstock, where youll be charged a modest fee for the
licence. As long as you keep hold of the documentation, youll
be protected. But be careful about using your images on social
media as some of them claim the right to all licences.
For real peace of mind, you need a professional website
company. Going it alone may seem attractive but this is just
one example of the many expensive pitfalls you could find
yourself in. There are numerous advantages to using a reputable company which will protect and advise you while delivering a service you can trust and benefit from.

At KKL, we recommend that clients make and update a list of
their assets and debts and consider either sharing it with their
executors or at least letting them know where such a list can
be located after their death.
Everyone, of course, has their own preference as to how this
can be done, or even whether to do it at all. Understandably,
you will have concerns about confidentiality and how this sensitive information can be safeguarded. Some people leave it
in a sealed envelope marked to be opened after my death,
especially if their wills are deposited with a professional organisation. It is important to review and update the list regularly,
wherever it is kept.
Having such a list ensures a quicker, more efficient and less
costly estate administration, as the executors already know
where to apply for the date of death values they need to obtain
probate.
Brenda, in this digital age there is another area on which your
executors will need your input, as you may have an increasing
number of online accounts not just for banking and investments, but also store accounts or sites such as eBay and Amazon or funds in a PayPal account. Consider including password
and account details in your list as long as you are satisfied with
secure storage arrangements for the list and do remember to
keep it up to date.

Up until the age of 18, childrens benefits are paid to their
parents or carers, but when your daughter turns 18, she will
receive them in her own name.
There are a number of benefits calculators that you can
access online (for example, www.turn2us.org.uk). Your daughter
may be entitled to Disability Living Allowance (DLA) soon to
become Personal Independence Allowance (PIP) and possibly
Employment Support Allowance (ESA).
If you are concerned about your daughters ability to manage
her own finances, wed recommend you consider applying to
be her appointee. This means that you could continue being
responsible for her benefits on her behalf.
Navigating the complicated benefits system can be difficult,
so if youd like more advice, please come to Norwoods free
information sessions for parents and carers, offering practical
guidance to help you support your child through the transition
to adulthood.

I love this black and white combination
of blackberries and cheese. Make it a day
in advance so it has time to chill and the
flavours to merge. The secret to its light
texture is to cooking the cake on a low slow
light which also helps to prevent cracking.
Decorate just before serving for best results.
PREPARATION TIME
35 MINS

2 Line and grease a loose based 23cm cake tin

with baking parchment paper.
3 Place the base ingredients in a food processor
8 Decrease the heat to 110C/ 90C fan/ gas

for a further 35 minutes.
9 Turn off the oven and leave to cool for about
2 hours. Transfer to the fridge to chill over night.
10 Remove from the tin and carefully peel away
the baking parchment paper.
To serve the stylish way: Dust with icing sugar

and decorate with fresh blackberries.

British teen lands floor

Matan Pearlman, 14, is a former North West
London Jewish Day School
pupil and claimed gold at the
annual competitions finals held
in Raanana.
He said: To take the U16 National Championship while not
yet 15 may even give me the
chance to skip the next category and go straight into the
junior competitions.
From there I can hopefully
look towards
European or
World Championships. While
right now its a
great honour
just to represent my family,
my club and my
city, the chance
to represent Israel on the national stage would
be a dream come true.
He added: Gymnastics is
not only about training and
competing in a sport that I love,
it has given me the opportunity
to dive into Israeli society and
meet and make friends with
people from all over the country
and from different backgrounds.
James throws himself

into top-five rankings
JAVELIN THROWER James
Bongart finished second at the
recent England National
Championships in Bedford.
Recording a new personal
best of 57.71m, his finish ensures hes now ranked fifth in
the UK.
He said: I was really happy
with my performance since I

was out of athletics for 16
months due to my knee injury.
His next meeting is in Birmingham on 2 July, when he will
be representing his club

The past season saw 22 teams
19 junior and three senior compete in a range of age groups,

League for the U15 Blues and U12
whites, while the U10 red team

won the Leagues Challenge Cup.

said: Following successful trials, we will next season have
three new junior teams at U9, 10
and 11 levels, which will bring
our total to 24 sides.

more level basis than in past

I would like to make a special mention about two brand
new teams this season our U9
red team, managed by Mitchell
Clement and Perrie Young, who
played 28,won 22 drew five and
lost just once, and the U11 blue
team, managed by Steve Dunn
and Lee Rich, who played 21

won 18, drew two, and also lost
just the once.

THE THREE Jewish singles tennis players at this years Wimbledon Championships saw their combined campaigns
last barely six hours as they all suffered first round exits.
Israels sole singles player, Dudi Sela,
proved no match for 13th seed David
Ferrer, who comprehensively beat him 62, 6-1, 6-1 in just 75 minutes.
Italian Camila Giorgi at least put up a
fight on Centre Court, taking second
seed Garbine Muguruza to a third and
deciding set, losing 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, while
Argentine Diego Schwartzman was
beaten in a five-set encounter by the
Netherlands Robin Haase, 6-2, 2-6, 3-6,
6-2, 5-7.
Despite Selas comprehensive defeat,
he did at least have a smile on his face.
Speaking after his thumping loss, he
said: It was probably my most disappointing Wimbledon campaign, but also
the quickest, I felt really good before the
match, not so much now!
I was okay going into the match, hes
not at his best right now and I thought
this was a good time to play him, in the

first round but it didnt work out.
Trying to explain the emphatic loss
and manner of it, he said: I was playing
really nervous at the beginning and made
a lot of mistakes, though he didnt give
me anything. But I didnt feel good, especially with the return shots.
I felt good after a few good performances in Nottingham [last week] and okay
after practice yesterday. But I felt nervous today and I dont know why. When
you lose and play well its ok, but I didnt
even sweat today and the match was
over just like that.
When I saw the draw, I knew it was a
tough one, but I thought I was playing
okay. Its not as if hes a big server, I felt
if I could play well from the baseline I
could win, but it was a complete disaster.
I didnt find my rhythm, especially in the
return games. He wasnt acing me but I
missed a lot of second serve returns at
the beginning of the match.
I tried to be aggressive at the beginning, but missed so many balls which affected my confidence. I then thought Id
play solid, get a lot of balls back, play it
short, but he punished me again.
He played okay, but I gave him the
match, he didnt have to play well. Hope-
