NASC 10 Section U
Before NASC 10, I thought this course, looking at the course title Forest as Source of
Life is a course where I will be learning how to use resources in the forest for survival reasons
like in boy and girl scouts. It sounds very absurd but that is my first idea about the course. Going
to the real matter, before this course, I know that forest is important in our daily lives since it
serves as the habitat and source food for animals and humans. I also learned from my
environment such as in school some methods of forest why it became source of life through real
reasons such it traps carbon dioxide which is one of the cause of global warming and emits
oxygen which is breathe by humans and animals to and superstitious reasons like trees absorb
water from the ground which prevents flood. I had also low interest towards environment and
indigenous people because most and foremost, how can you develop love and interest to subjects
you do not know? That is why I didnt understand people protesting in environmental issues such
as banning of informal swidden farming, mining near the domains of some indigenous people
because most and for all I do not have the knowledge that is concerned about these issues before.
During NASC 10 I realized how beautiful our world we are living especially when we
discussed about forest through the stunning pictures of forest on the slides that we barely see
right now. It broke my first impression that studying forest and nature is boring and as a matter
of fact, it is fun to study these because there many things you can learn about forest that you
never imagined before. NASC 10 gave me to understand through using scientific approach forest
sustain life on earth. One example which I like most is that mountains is like a huge sponge that
will collect all water during rainy season and will release it to streams and rivers during summer
that could help to sustain water from rice fields. I also learned that logging when done right does
not really destroy forest because it brings other opportunities to other plants and seeds to bloom
thus maintaining trees in the forest, excluding illegal logging of course. It changed by former
belief to logging which is destructive. I also learned forest also is a home for our indigenous
people and destruction of forest could cause the loss of their livelihood, disturbance to their
population and culture that could worsen their current poor situation. I made into realization that
forest is indeed our source of life but what is saddening we are not providing care that it
deserves. We are applying the idea of the tragedy of the commons to our forest that when
continued will have a bad impact on us which is very evident now and our sons and daughters
and the succeeding generation will suffer from our faults.
After NASC 10, I will be more aware to my actions whether if it is very beneficial to our
environment or not. I will less my consumption to electricity and will use recycled materials to
lessen my production of trash. I will preserve life of smaller organism especially if it in the right
place or scenario since it could disturb the balance of the area where it lives considering that all
organisms are connected through symbiotic relationships. Lastly I will share my knowledge I
learned here in NASC 10 to my acquaintances for them to know the importance of forest to us so
that will be also become stewards of the forest that could protect and conserve it and mitigate the
worsening effects of the continual loss of forest.
