Newfoundland entrepreneur Anne Whelan to represent Canada at

international forum in Peru

St. Johns, NL, 22 June 2016 Anne Whelan, President and CEO of Seafair Capital Inc., has accepted an
invitation to represent the Government of Canada at an APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation)
international forum that focuses on issues related to womens economic empowerment. APEC Women
and the Economy Forum 2016 takes place in Lima, Peru, from June 27-30, 2016.
Its an honor and a privilege to have this opportunity to represent Canada, says Whelan, a
leading entrepreneur in Atlantic Canada and frequent speaker on women-in-business issues. She was
invited to participate in the forum by Global Affairs Canada's Business Women in International Trade
program. As a businesswoman, I recognize how critical these discussions are to furthering womens
opportunities to engage in entrepreneurial activities around the globe. I look forward to sharing my
personal experiences and learning from the experiences of representatives from other countries.
As Canadas representative, Whelan will be delivering a speech on the topic of economy care
systems, an area in which she has ample experience. In 2007, she purchased CareGivers, a home care
agency that she had been managing for five years. Between 2007 and 2010, Whelan grew the revenue
of the company from less than $5 million to just over $20 million, diversifying the companys range of
services, which included residential care for children and adults, home support, private duty nursing,
and clinic services. She was awarded a Queens Diamond Jubilee Medal for her contributions to home
and community care in Newfoundland in 2012 the same year she established Seafair Capital Inc., a
private investment company with businesses that operate within three main divisions (home and
community care, residential care, and safety/industrial). Seafair Capital continues to build its portfolio of
companies in related sectors.

Whelan is also known as a vocal advocate for women in business. This past April, she announced
Seafair Capital's target to spend 25% of its discretionary spending with women-owned suppliers. The
company's newly formed diversity spend program will use the Supplier Diversity NL online database
(http://supplierdiversitynl.com/), created by the Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women
Entrepreneurs (NLOWE), to connect with women-owned businesses.
APEC Women and the Economy Forum 2016 will host approximately 450 delegates from the 21
APEC economies, coming from the public and private sectors, academe, and civil society.
Recommendations arising out of this forum will be considered by the Ministers/Heads of Delegation to
the High Level Policy Dialogue on Women and the Economy, for incorporation in the APEC Women and
the Economy Statement.
