FOREWORD
First and foremost, CONGRATULATIONS! It gives me great pleasure to
see innovative and productive teachers making a great effort to produce
teaching materials to be used in the classroom. MAS is very much needed to
help teachers to face the challenges in an LEP class.
The MAS module is aimed at students who are in the borderline of
passing the exam. Teachers should seriously use this module to complement
their teaching in the classroom. Therefore, I sincerely hope that the English
teachers in Pasir Gudang will put the CD to good use.
Finally, congratulations also to the Pasir Gudang English Language
Panel for providing the platform for this programme to materialise. Keep up
the good work.

FOREWORD
English Language is one of the core subjects in the PMR and SPM that
contributes to the overall performance of the state and schools. Focussed
measures should be taken to help raise the standard of English in Pasir
Gudang and emphasis needs to be given in improving the English language
proficiency among students. The process of teaching and learning in the
classroom ought to be given top priority especially in the PMR and SPM
classes.
It is with this vision, that this MAS CD is specially designed to cater to
the need of the low proficiency students in the PMR and SPM classes. This
module aims to help students to be more prepared for the exam by providing
them skills to explore each area in the English subject and giving them
sufficient practice through exercises which present gradual development in
difficulty and are exam-oriented.
It is hoped that this module will bring great benefit to the teachers in
their teaching and learning process and to the students concerned in passing
their exams. Congratulations to the English teachers in Pasir Gudang who are
involved in this programme for contributing their expertise, time and effort
in designing this module and to the Academic Unit of the Pasir Gudang
District Education office for their support.

Oprah Winfrey is an amazing talk show producer, actress, a host and also a very

Oprah took over. In less than a year the show expanded into an hour long programme and was

Oprah devoted her talk show to help young children. She talks about violence, poverty,

HUGE TREE THAT HAS LIVED 1,300 YEARS

The biggest chengal tree in the world is found right here in the jungle of
Malaysia. The tree standing at 65 metres with a circumference of 16.7
metres, needs a total of 13 adults to hug its trunk.
If it were to be chopped down (heaven forbids it), the tree would
require 27 lorries to transport the timber worth some RM1 million. This is
based on only 55 per cent of the tree volume as the rest are branches and
other unusable parts.
Nonetheless, this 1,300 year old chengal tree (the age is based on its
growth rings) is safe as it is located within the Pasir Raja Forest Reserve in
Dungun, Terengganu. The State Forestry Department is keeping a close eye
on the tree to ensure it comes to no harm. Pasir Raja Forest Reserve is a
perfect setting for jungle trekking, nature walks, mountain climbing,
swimming and relaxing
The chengal or Neobalanocarpus heimii is a straight pole, large
hardwood found in Malaysia, southern Thailand, Indonesia and the
Philippines. It is highly resistant to decay when in ground contact or in
persistently damp or poorly ventilated situations.
As such, the wood is used for boat building or wharfs and bridge
construction. It is also good as railway sleepers, poles and piles.
1. How much of the tree can be
used as timber?
A. 25 per cent
B. 45 per cent

Watching
television
sometimes thought to be unhealthy for
children but research has shown otherwise. It has been proven that TV
is an interactive channel that encourages children to inculcate their
social and communicative skills. By watching television, they become
more easy-going, open and they find it easy to communicate with other
people. Television also helps to develop their language abilities through
certain programmes. Moreover, it also develops their listening skills,
exposes them to different cultures, educates them about science and
technology and keeps them in touch with social and sport news. It also 43
keeps them from being bored and away from unhealthy activities
outside their homes. Clearly, it has plenty to offer to our children. It is a
waste of resources if parents deprive them of watching television.

Sample Answer:

Pollution is a serious problem facing the world today. Our air,
water and land are being polluted every day.
Air pollution is caused by smoke given out by motor vehicles
and factories. This smoke dirties the air and causes eye problems.
We may also suffer from breathing problems because of the polluted
air which contains less oxygen.
Water pollution is the result of factories dumping toxic wastes
into the rivers and seas. Oil spills from tankers also cause the seas
and oceans to become polluted. This polluted water has killed many
fish and sea animals.
Land pollution is caused by the dumping of rubbish all over the

Food is essential for every living thing. We must have good eating
habits in order to stay healthy. Having good eating habits is not
something difficult to do. We must eat three main meals every day. We
must have proper breakfast, lunch and dinner. Skipping meals will
affect our stomach and may cause gastric problems.
We must include vegetables in our daily meals. Vegetables contain
a lot of minerals and vitamins. It is best to eat vegetables raw or
steamed. Overcooking vegetables will cause loss of vitamins and
minerals.
We must drink six to eight glasses of water every day. It is better
to drink mineral water rather than fizzy drinks. Fizzy drinks contain a lot
of sugar and it is bad for health.

It is easy to have your own herbal garden. First, you must
plan your garden. Make sure that your garden has enough
sunlight and proper drainage. Sunlight is important for plants to
make their own food. Too much of water will be harmful for plants.
Next, prepare the herbal bed. You have to dig the soil to
loosen it. You can add fertilisers to enrich the soil. Adding compost
to the soil is a good way to enrich it. After that, you are ready to
plant your herbs. When you have planted the herbs, label the
rows so that you will know the types of herbs you have planted.
You must take care of your herbs so that they can grow

garden by pulling out the weed regularly. You can harvest your
herbs once they are ready.

trees planted around our homes help reduce cooling costs. The air
we breathe is improved by the presence of trees. In order to

pollutants such as smoke, dust and ash, making our air cleaner.
Where water is concerned, trees not only absorb water and

1. Use past tense for the verbs to write any story/recount

Activity A
Replace the underlined verbs to simple past tense
My Aunt Esah has some very strange habits. She gets up at 2 a.m. and cooks
a huge breakfast for herself. It is always the same breakfast. She has eggs and
sardines, and coffee. The first thing she does is, she boils the water for the coffee.
While it boils, she starts frying the eggs. While they are cooking in the pan, she
takes out her tin-opener and opens the tin of sardines. She has one special tinopener which she treasures dearly. She also loves her frying-pan which she scrubs
and polishes carefully until its copper bottom gleams and she can see her face
reflected in it. She loves it so much that she always talks to it as she cleans it or
cooks with it. She also talks to her tin-opener, of course, and also to her kettle and
coffee pot, for that matter. They have all been with her since the day she was
married.

70

Activity B:

2. Then, change the verbs into simple past. They are 14 mistakes in this passage.

I have a wonderful holiday in Pulau Tioman. Initially, I have only wanted to spend a week there
but I have such an enjoyable time that I decide to extend my vacation for another week. The
weather is bright and sunny and I have a marvelous weekend on the beautiful beach. I also
meet a charming young man and we become close friends. He takes me to his house in his
sleek, shiny sports car. It is a very small but cozy house with a spacious garden. He takes me to
a posh restaurant which serves some delicious, mouth-watering dishes. He also buys for me an
attractive dress. Then we see an interesting movie.

THE RIVER
BY: VALERIE BLOOM
The Rivers a wanderer,
A nomad, a tramp.
He doesn't choose any one place
To set up his camp.
The Rivers a winder,
Through valley and hill
He twists and he turns,
He just cannot be still.
The Rivers a hoarder,
And he buries down deep
Those little treasures
That he wants to keep.

The Rivers a baby,

He gurgles and hums,
And sounds like hes happily
Sucking his thumbs.
The Rivers a singer,
As he dances along,
The countryside echoes
The notes of his song.
The Rivers a monster,
Hungry and vexed,
Hes gobbled up trees
And hell swallow you next.

We leave the oiling to be done

Task 3.1

START

Task 3.2
In the novel Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne, the character
who changes in the novel is Phileas Fogg.
Phileas is a precise and an organized person. He lives alone in his
house. He follows a strict routine every day. He likes things to follow his way
and shows no emotion. He fires his old butler for preparing the water 2
degrees too cold.
When he goes on the trip around the world he becomes more flexible.
He does not complain when he has missed his ship. He does not punish
Passepartout when he made mistakes at a temple in Bombay. He is even
willing to fight the American bandits to save Passepartout.
Moreover, Phileas has also become a more caring person. He is the one
who suggests that Aouda should be saved. He even helps Aouda to find her
cousin in Hong Kong. In the end, he decides to marry Aouda and end their
lonely lives.
The above evidences support my answer. In conclusion, he changes
and becomes a better person.

TASK 6.1

TASK 6.2
In the novel Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne, one lesson
that I choose is the importance of good values. The values that I have
learned are loyalty, kindness, persistence, determination, calmness and
bravery .

Firstly, Passepartout shows loyalty to his master. He is a responsible

butler and does his work as best as he can. He also does not believe when
Fix says his monsieur is a robber.
Secondly, Phileas and Passepartout both show kindness when they
rescue Aouda from the bandits in India. Phileas also shows kindness when he
rescues Passepartout after he is captured by the bandits in America. Aouda
shows kindness when she wants Phileas to rescue Passepartout.
Thirdly, Phileas shows, persistence, determination, calmness and
bravery . He never gives up despite the problems. He rides on elephants
when the train has stopped in India. He also tries to find another boat
whenever he misses the right steamer. In America he bravely suggests that
he should rescue Passepartout from the bandits.
The above evidences support my answer. From the novel I have
learned that difficulties can be solved by practicing good values.

TASK 7.2
In the novel Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne, a theme
shown is determination. We can see determination in many characters when
they are facing problems.
Firstly, it is shown when Phileas buys an elephant to continue their
journey. They cannot ride the train because the railway is incomplete. They
ride through thick forest and meet with bandits but they still never give up.

Secondly, when they are rescuing Aouda in the thick forest, Phileas
do not surrender when the bandits attack him and the rest. They follow their
plan successfully.
Thirdly, Passepartout joins an acrobatic team in Yokohama to survive.
He is separated from Aouda and Phileas. However, he does not give up. He
works with the acrobatic team because he wishes to follow them to America
