Location and Site

An Interpretation of Naples city map

The site chosen is located in plain chaotic

Naples city center. Close to one of the
most important street in the area, Via
Tribunali, which is filled with busy
restaurants and shops.
Densely constructed, very few empty
spaces remain in these centenary streets.

Site

The site is a narrow and dark

lane, 2 to 4m wide and about
25m long. Arches cross
the alley conecting the two
surrounding buildings.

Concept Model
Over the designing process diverse
models and sculptures were made to
test volumes and textures.
This sculpture is an experimentation
with organic forms, the idea of
ascendence and projection of light
and shadows.

Section AA
The desing concept was developed around
the beauty of light mutation, reflections and
shadows.
The climb of the delicated moving stairs
leads to the home of a piano teacher and
ultimatly to the rooftop, where a classroom
lays between city and sky.

Illustrated Section
In order to accommodate the home
and the classroom in such a site,
moving stairs were adopted. They
connect the building to the street and
separate private and rooms as well.
This way students are directed to the
classroom and have no access to the
teachers home.

The membrane
The membrane that involves the timber platforms is made of a steel structure and glasses
pyramids.
The pyramids size grow according to its height position in the building, the smallest
pieces are in the entrance and largest ones are on the rooftop.
This change of proportion added to a flowing shape causes an impression of movement.

Music Room Scheme

Section BB
The membranes steel structure
and the timber platforms are
embeds to the surrounding
buildings.

The music room, where lessons

and small presentations take
place, is the stairs ascendance
apex.
From the timbers structure top
students and teacher can see
some of Naples well-known
monuments.

Next to the site is the abandoned
church Santa Maria Maggiore, that
once was one of the renown Neapolitan
conservatories.
From the bustling Piazza Georolomini,
the classroom is visible closely to Santa

The Buildings History

A brewery from the early XIX in
south Brazil that has been abandoned
for the last twenty years is the object
of study for a reuse design.
This drawing resembles different
stages of the buildings architecture
during the last century.

15

The Factory Complex

The mill reuse design could not be done
without considering the brewerys whole
industrial complex.
Guidelines for urban connections,
landscaping and occupation were
established on an initial design stage.

16

The Art Factory

In this former factory exposition,

spaces and workshops are joined
in the creation of a vibrant place,
where art can be produced and
experienced.

17

Facade Model

Section

The small model is a study of the

entrances relocation and it impacts on
the building aesthetics.

The section cuts the buildings central and

main space where a visual connection
between workshops and exposition places
is made through glass boxes. Visitants and
artist can see what is happening in the different rooms of the art factory.

18

Second Floor Illustration

In the second floor, where the roof had fallen
down, there was a oneiric feeling caused by the
light that invaded the abandoned factory.
That sensation was prioritized in the reuse design. Moving roofing was adopted, this way the
room could be used in open-air exhibitions.

19

Exposition Place Entrance

Since the former entrance did not have enough
space to accommodate the many people, it
was relocated to the side where the new one is
crowned by a wire installation. It evidences the
stairway, protects visitants from the sun and still
translucid enough not to block the view to the
old building.

20

Workshop Entrance
A separated and secondary entrance leading to
the workshops was created.
A luminous staircase beneath old and rusty
pipes makes the existence of a contemporary
intervention clear.

21

The Moving Roof

The moving roof slides on rails on top of the

immobile one until it reaches the gap where
the lift passes through.
