Nowadays, it cannot be denied that technologies have conquered our world and

lifestyle few generations ago. This includes groups of a community such as housewives,
doctors, lecturers as well as students. Students who are using the cell phone in their life
considered the small gadget as their basic necessity of life. Most of the multifunction cell
phones are now can be owned by students as their prices are considered cheap. People
thought students with the cell phone will make their social skills improve which is not
very true. Przybylski and Weinstein (2012) wrote that the presence of mobile phones in
social environment has influences the face-to-face interactions. This certainly affects the
connectivity among each other. The usage of cell phones among student makes them less
connected because it will affect their interpersonal communication and concentrate more
on social media.
The usage of a cell phone makes the student less connected because it will affect
their interpersonal communication. This is because students prefer to text, call or chat on
social media rather than having a face to face conversation. For example, the student
tends to send birthday wishes through text or call as they think it is easier and fastest way
to wish. Jones (2014) conducted a field observation and surveys to find out the level of
involvement that Elon University students have towards their gadgets as well as face-toface situations, which comes out with result of 56.9 % of students out of 65 respondents
are addicted to instant and constant communication. Besides that, the finding also states
that people want to be connected and receive immediate responds. The impact of this is
their friend may feel neglected for not wishing them verbally. Furthermore, Jerpi (2013)
stated that even though mobile apps may help to make our lives easier, some questioned
the impact on the relationship that we have with one another. In addition, Brown, Manago
and Trimble (2016) founds out that the more dyads spent time on their phones, the lower
the rating for their interaction, that is, the interaction is more strained and less
pleasurable. Besides that, students will have a problem in expressing their feelings. For
example, due to the engagement of students with their cell phones in their daily life, they
could not explain their feelings to their friends, teachers or family through real life
communication. This will cause misunderstanding throughout the conversation as well as
may results in awkward conversation in their real life communication. Students with an

advances cell phone would love to express their subject of conversation by sending
emoticons. For example, when a student is discussing with his or her friend about a car,
they might just send the car emoticon instead of writing it down. This affects students
grammar skills in conversation in future. According to surveys made by Dargo (2015),
89% of respondents agreed that there was a change of state of face-to-face
communication due to technology, while 5% disagreed and 6% are in between.
Secondly, using cell phone makes students less connected because they will be more
concentrate on social media. Social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,
Snapchat and other popular platforms may be downloaded and installed in students
cellphone without any cost of money. With the development of the affordable network for
Internet, students will be more concentrate on social media seeking for advices or any
problem solving. For example, they prefer to share their problems with Facebooks
friends rather than seeking advice from their family or teachers. The negative impact of
this is it will cause the family bonding to be more distant. M, Reno and NV (2013) wrote
that asides of using social media for connecting, students also tends to share their pictures
or tweets which related to their insecurities for knowing how much likes they get. If they
are not satisfied with the results, this may effects the students psychological thinking and
behaviour which may result to depression or anxiety. As stated by O'Keefe and Pearson
(2011), for ofine depression, people who suffer from Facebook depression are more
likely to feel isolated and sometimes turn to risky Internet sites and blogs for help that
may promote immoral behaviours. This will directly causes social issues among student
raises which then will affect their images. Another cause is student thought that all the
info provided by certain people in social media is true. Students may get the info from
random sources which may not be true. For example, when student gets info about
something new, this may cause them to share it with their friends without seeking for
clarification. This will lead to confusion to other users as well as their friends. Hence,
inaccurate information may spread throughout the websites.
On the other side, the usage of cell phone among students will help them always be
connected and stay safe. Stay connected means the family always be informed about the

students situation and condition through SMS or voice call. This is because, if they
encountered any problems, they may directly contact their friends, family or whom they
trust in a short time. This may decrease the time interval of being threatened by
emergency situation or to reduce panic on the student. (Leung & Wei, 2000) stated that
the use of phones is largely a way to feel closer with family members, to express care for
others, and to be available to others. Students will feel appreciated as they may talk to
people they trust which always be available to them. Przybylski and Weinstein also stated
that communication technology helps to connect billions of people throughout the world
over great distances through mobile phones. Thus, a cell phone makes students easy to be
reached and not to be worried by their family members. Some people admitted that their
addictive habits toward cell phone arise because they wanted to be connected with their
friends and family. Even though this statement may be true, we should not simply point
our finger on the negative impacts of a cell phone to the student. Students sometimes may
take things differently when using cell phone which makes them to be less connected.
Jones studied that people are aware of their personal habit and behaviour related to their
interaction with their devices.
As a conclusion, the usage of a cell phone makes students less connected is
undeniable. It is our responsibility to create awareness among students and help them to
attach to people around them. Steven Spielberg once said that Technology can be our
best friend, and technology can also be the biggest party poopers of our lives. It interrupts
our own story, interrupts our ability to have a thought or a daydream, to imagine
something wonderful because we are too busy bridging the walk from the cafeteria back
to the office on the cell phones.
