In a major development in the race for Congress in Michigans 6th District, Presidential candidate and Senator Bernie Sanders (D-VT) endorsed Paul Clements campaign. The Sanders campaign sent a fundraising e-mail blast announcing the Senators endorsement. In it, they cited Clements strong positions on the environment and his opponents ties to big oil: Paul Clements [is a] progressive who is running against a climate-denier who only won his last election because of Koch Brothers spending. Previous candidates who received the Sanders endorsement have received the backing of major national organizations and a fundraising windfall as a result. One candidate, Lucy Flores, reported receiving $600,000 as a result of an e-mail. Clements was appreciative of the Senators support. Bernie Sanders has brought many key Democratic issues to the forefront in his campaign for President, and I am honored to have his support in my race for Congress. I look forward to working with him to solve the issues that face America today, like the corrosive influence of money in politics and the fact the wealthiest people in this country play by a different set of rules. Together, Senator Sanders and I will stand together to make the United States a leader in the fight against climate change - in a Congress where Democrats have earned a majority in both houses. We will bring the change that Washington so desperately needs. Campaign Manager Mike Szustak noted the enormity of the endorsement. We had already been setting fundraising records for Democrats in this district, but, with Senator Sanders endorsement, were primed to build the strongest campaign Fred Upton has ever faced. Congressman Upton is now on notice the entire country is watching you. The people of the Sixth District are watching you, too, and were going to tell them about your dirty energy bill, your efforts to turn Medicare into a voucher program, and your Trump-like record on womens rights. Paul Clements is a professor of Political Science at Western Michigan University and the Democratic candidate for Congress from Michigans Sixth District. He is running for Congress to sustainably bring new jobs to Southwest Michigan, to fight the Big Money interests that threaten our democracy and our environment, and to restore the power of the middle-class in Congress. He lives in Kalamazoo with his wife Aedin and has two daughters. The Sixth District comprises all of Berrien, Cass, Kalamazoo, St. Joseph, and Van Buren counties and most of Allegan county in Southwest Michigan. ####
