1. When was Test ECM Mode available?

Test ECM Mode was available on release 8 Vista software or higher (As a
guide, the date of the file would be Dec 2002 onwards).

2. When to use Test ECM Mode

A Systematic diagnostic processes should be used to identify faults.
The Fault Finding Guide (FFG) should be used before Test ECM Mode.
Test ECM Mode should only be used as the final confirmation that the original
ECM is faulty or not.
For more information and queries about Test ECM Mode and issues relating to
the ECM please contact Perkins Technical Support Centre:

3. How do I start to use Test ECM Mode?

__You will need an ECM which does not have the Engine Serial Number programmed.
This can be a new ECM or one that has been used for Test ECM Mode previously**.
__You will need a copy of TIPSS-EST 2002B or later (The Integrated Parts & Service
System Electronic Service Tool). You will also require a TIPSS communication adaptor.
__You will need a copy of the ECM flash file (release 8 or later), which is on the
suspected faulty ECM. This can be downloaded from PTMI (Perkins Technical Marketing
Information) which is on Perkins secure website.
If your flash file is earlier than release 8 then you must download a release 8 or later
version from PTMI.
**Test ECMs can only be used if their timer has not expired or it has not been terminated by the
user, in which case the ECM can never be used as a Test ECM again.

4. Programming the Engine Serial Number. Warning!

Before the ECMs Test ECM Mode is activated if the user tries to program the
Engine Serial Number he will be given a warning that this will prevent them from
using the ECM as a test ECM. This will normally apply to new ECMs that have
not been used as Test ECMs before. Once Test ECM Mode has been activated
the engine serial number can be programmed.

5. Using Test ECM Mode

To start using the Test ECM Mode, the user must connect to the suspected
faulty ECM and make a note of the Flash File number. If the flash file number
cannot be obtained from the suspected faulty ECM then the user must use the
Engine Serial Number to Search the PTMI system to obtain the correct Flash
File.
The user must then remove the ECM plug from the suspected ECM and insert
into the test ECM. Using EST the user must flash the Test ECM with the correct
Flash File. Test ECM Mode can now be selected from the Service menu.

6. How to access Test ECM Mode

Test ECM Mode can be selected from the Service drop down menu when
connected to an ECM using the Electronic Service Tool (EST) 2002B onwards.

7. Test ECM Mode Screen

Once Test ECM Mode has been selected the screen will display information
relating to Test ECM Mode.

8. Activating Test ECM Mode

Once Test ECM Mode has been activated the Test ECM Mode status will
display Active.

9. Test ECM Mode Clock

Once Test ECM Mode has been activated the Test ECM Time remaining will
count down from 24Hrs. This is displayed in hours and minutes.

10. Terminating Test ECM Mode

If the user selects the Terminate button he will be given a warning, which
indicates that if they terminate Test ECM Mode this ECM will no longer be able
to be used as a Test ECM.

11. Test ECM Mode Time Remaining Warning

When the time has less than 1hr remaining, the text indicating the time remaining
will increase in size and more bold. A warning will also be displayed at the bottom
of the screen that there is less than 1hour test time remaining.

12. Reactivating Test ECM Mode

If the user selects Reactivate then the time will be reset to 24hrs. All
configuration values that may have been modified while in Test ECM Mode will
be reset to their original values.

13. Test ECM Mode Time Has Elapsed

Once Test ECM Mode time has elapsed the ECM can no longer be used as a
Test ECM. The Test ECM Mode Status will show Inactive and the Test ECM
Time Remaining will be 00 hours 00 min.

If the user tries to start Test ECM Mode again then they will be give the following
message.
