Abstract
The governing equation of lubrication theory was developed by Osborne Reynolds i
n 1886. Two-dimensional solutions to this equation were not obtained until many
years afterwards, first by electric analog techniques and then by digital comput

er. Solving the equation has produced tremendous advances in bearing design and
development and insight into the mechanisms of lubricating film behavior. This p
aper concentrates on some of the developments for solving the Reynolds equation a
nd some applications that have followed a better understanding of fluid-film phe
nomena.

Abstract
An approximate method is developed to include the flexibility of the pad in the
calculation of the stiffness and damping properties of a tilting pad journal bea
ring. It is a small-amplitude perturbation solution in which the pad deformation
is accounted for solely by the change in clearance. A comparison of results wit
h those obtained from a more complete elasto-hydrodynamic solution shows good ag
reement.

Abstract
The dynamic bearing coefficients are obtained from a solution to the variational
equivalent of Reynolds equation. A perturbation method is applied to find the i
ndividual dynamic coefficients. The Finite Element Method is used in the numeric
al evaluation of the equations. The flow is assumed to be laminar, the lubricant
is Newtonian. Allowance is made for viscosity-temperature dependency in circumf
erential and axial directions.

Abstract
The advantages of operating multistage axial compressors on 4 pad tilting pad be
arings are discussed and compared to other fixed bore and tilting pad bearing de
signs. These advantages include operation free of subsynchronous vibration and,
with between pivot loading, placement of peak response speeds well outside of th
e operating speed range. Examples of analytical design studies of 3 actual rotor
systems are presented and discussed to illustrate the design recommendations. T
est stand results are also included for 3 axial compressors to help substantiate
the analytical results.

Abstract
This paper presents a new design chart for the full journal bearing using dimens
ionless groups containing all relevant parameters the designer is mainly interes
ted in. Some illustrative examples of how to use this chart have been added. The
main object, however, is the introduction of a new way of presenting bearing da
ta of all kinds of hydrodynamic bearings in such a way that they are directly su
itable for design purposes. Particular attention has been paid to the possibilit
y of optimization procedures which follow logically and directly from this chart
. Other types of film bearings shall be treated in later papers.

Abstract
A general analytical technique is presented for the evaluation of rolling elemen
t bearings when their structural support significantly influences the equilibriu
m solution. A cylindrical roller bearing supported by an elastic outer housing w
ith two stiff leg supports is analyzed to illustrate the application of this com
puter oriented method. Experimental determination of the roller load distributio
n by footprint measurement techniques shows excellent agreement with the analytica
l predictions. The method of solution is outlined with sufficient detail to enab
le the cooperation of structural and bearing analysis in the solution of a class

of problems requiring both disciplines.

Abstract
A time-transient nonlinear dynamic analysis is presented to study the motion of
statically unloaded journal-bearing tilting pads. The major finding is that unlo
aded pads can exhibit a strong sub-synchronous self-excited vibration. The frequ
ency of this periodic motion is somewhat below half the rotational speed and bea
rs a close relationship to self-excited oil-whip vibration of rotors on lightly
loaded non-tilting pad journal bearings. The identification of this type of self
-excited pad vibration has practical significance to the solution of problems in
applications involving damage to unloaded pads. A comprehensive parametric stud
y is presented and shows which tilting-pad journal bearing parameters are signif
icant to self-excited pad vibration and its elimination.

Abstract
Experimental results are given for load capacity and whirl onset in journal bear
ings of circular, elliptical and offset halves bore shape. The general validity
of the linearized model for predicting whirl is confirmed experimentally. Deviat
ions between experimental results and the model, based on an isoviscous film, ar
e attributed to the varying viscosity that occurs in practice, and to unavoidabl
e excitation that gives rise to premature whirl. It is shown that increasing gro
ove size has a destabilizing effect that can more than cancel the beneficial eff
ect of preloading. This result is particularly relevant to the design of journal
bearings in turbomachinery.

Abstract
Calculated steady-state and dynamic characteristics are given for the four-pad,
tilting-pad journal bearing with preload coefficients of 0 and 0.5 and for mean
Reynolds up to 12,000. The calculated characteristics are compared with experime
ntal measurements over the same range of operating parameters. Correlation is go
od, leading to the conclusion that the calculated data are effective for design
analysis of rotor-bearing systems using tilting-pad bearings.

Abstract
A transfer matrix-direct integration combined method is proposed, which employs
the transfer matrix method to derive the equations of motion of a characteristic
disk, and uses the direct integration method to determine the critical speeds, mo
des and unbalance response of a rotor-bearing system, and to analyze its stabili
ty. Despite the complexity of the system, the number of governing equations is n
ot greater than eight. For a single-spool rotating system, the number of equatio
ns is only four. A transfer matrix for a uniform shaft is derived to consider it
s distributed mass, moment of inertia and the effect of shearing force. An imped
ance matrix iteration method is proposed to consider the effect of a complicated
bearing-supporting system on the rotor dynamics. Two examples are given, and th
e results agree satisfactorily with the experiments.

Abstract
A method is described for calculating critical speeds, unbalance response and da

the foundation are calculated separately and coupled at the bearings through imp

shaft response by an expansion in its free-free modes.

Abstract
The use of dynamic reduction of finite element matrices in rotor dynamics analys
is is shown to offer advantages of computational efficiency and modeling accurac
y. Solution procedures and sample results for comprehensive rotor dynamics progr
am for design purposes are presented. The basic reduction approaches have been e
xtensively used in general structural analysis. Application to rotor dynamics re
quires an extension to account for skew-symmetric gyroscopic matrices. Dynamic r
eduction allows the analyst to discretize the rotor to a convenient level of det
ail, and then retain only enough degrees of freedom to adequately describe rotor
behavior. Subsequent assembly of reduced shaft matrices with bearing matrices a
t a given speed allows various types of analysis to be conducted including: crit
ical speed, damped eigenvalue-eigenvector, synchronous response, and transient s
olution. The computer solution time is significantly reduced because of the redu
ced number of degrees of freedom, with little sacrifice in accuracy for the lowe
r modes of usual interest. The repeated use of reduced rotor matrices throughout
a speed range also provides reduced computer costs.
