Instrument Warranty
All USTER instruments are covered by a limited warranty, conditions of which may vary
according to local laws.
We are required by current U.S. regulations to call this a "Limited Warranty" because there are
ways a user might cause damage to this equipment that are completely beyond our control.
Uster Technologies, Inc. assumes no responsibility for the customer's process, facilities, or
personnel. The customer is liable for damage of this sort. Failure to supply specified electrical
and air requirements will void the warranty.
The warranty period is 12 months from the date the instrument is shipped from the factory, or 18
months from the date the instrument is installed by Uster Technologies, Inc.
Further, Uster Technologies, Inc. will replace externally undamaged glass electrodes, measuring
cells, and electron tubes within 6 months of delivery if test results reveal manufacturing faults or
insufficient life.
Upon written request of the purchaser within the warranty period, we will repair or replace (at
our discretion) any instrument or part that fails in normal use as a result of improper design,
faulty materials, or faulty workmanship. Replaced parts shall become the property of Uster
Technologies, Inc.
In the event that the defective part/instrument must be returned to the factory for repair, transport
both ways shall be at the cost and risk of the purchaser. Also the costs of dismantling and reerection of the defective part are to be carried by the purchaser. If, for any reason beyond our
control, such part cannot be repaired or replaced at our factory all additional costs resulting
therefrom shall be borne by the purchaser.
The purchaser shall not be entitled to claim any further indemnity for deficiencies in the goods
delivered, in particular for damages or for cancellation of the contract.
All contractual obligations of the vendor expire unless the purchaser advises Uster Technologies,
Inc. of any claims arising under the guarantee in writing before expiry of the warranty period.
Excluded from the warranty are defects and losses resulting from improper storage, natural
wear, improper maintenance, failure to observe the operating instructions, excessive loading,
the user of unsuitable media, the influence of chemical or electrolytic action, unsatisfactory
building or erection and commissioning work not undertaken by Uster Technologies, Inc., or
other reasons beyond our control.
The vendors liability shall cease if the purchaser or a third party undertakes changes or repairs
to the goods without the written consent of Uster Technologies, Inc., or if such goods are resold
by the purchaser to a third party without an agreement from the Uster Technologies, Inc. For
materials or goods supplied by third parties, the Uster accepts liability only to the extent of the
guarantees provided by such third parties.

2.3.1
Functional Description
The control system governs AFIS PRO 2 operations. It provides the link
between software and the mechanical and pneumatic hardware. The control
system, through the control board, initiates the sampling sequence, polls and
monitors AFIS PRO 2 instrument parameters and functions, and ends the
sampling sequence.
The AFIS PRO 2 software is the initiating input for the control board. Once it
has received a "start" signal from the software, it is in complete control of the
AFIS PRO 2 instrument allowing the host computer to concentrate on collecting
and analyzing data. The host computer and AFIS PRO 2 software respond to
interrupts from the control system and the control board.
The control system and control board monitor, control, and connect the AFIS
PRO 2 instrument components.
2.3.2
Monitoring
The control board polls and monitors the following components and indicates
their status to the AFIS PRO 2 software (causing error conditions when
appropriate):
Sliver Detector
2.3.3
Controlling
The control board has real time control over the state and function of the
following components and signals the host regarding any changes that would
affect the AFIS PRO 2 instrument performance:

2.4.2
There is a separate drive motor for the fiber individualizer. The FI motor
assembly is quiet in operation, which allows for direct monitoring and control
of the motor speed, and easier service and replacement. The FI motor
assembly has its own motor controller board, which monitors and controls the
motor speed. The motor speed can be adjusted by a potentiometer located on
the board.

Sliver Detector
The sliver detector is located between the feed tray and feed plate. Its function
is to signal the control system when sliver is being presented to the
individualizer and when sliver is no longer present.
The sliver detector consists of an infrared LED source and detector.
When the trailing end of the sliver passes by the source/detector, the
beam is made once again.

Functional Description
Detection circuitry
Individualized fibers (and Neps) are transported pneumatically from the fiber
individualizer by an air stream. They enter the sensor(s) through an
accelerating nozzle, which straightens, separates, and aligns the fibers in
proper orientation to the source detector.
The fibers penetrate a collimated LED source beam of light and scatter and
block that light in proportion to their optical diameter and in direct relation to
their time of flight through the sampling volume.
Nep signals are much greater in magnitude and duration and generate a
characteristic Nep "spike" (B).

Overview of Calibration
The Lint and Trash sensors are calibrated at the factory. They are
electronically self-regulating in the field. If the AFIS PRO 2 instrument strays
beyond the ranges of self-calibration, the software will indicate this, and
operation will be halted. An Uster Technologies service technician can restore
the AFIS PRO 2 instrument to its self-regulating performance.

Performance Checks
Uster Technologies, Inc. recommends that the customer keep two or three
samples for which data has been established.
Ideally, this would include:
A Bale Sample
This set covers the typical range of material found in the mill. The quantity of
the samples should be sufficiently large so that the same sample set can be
used over a long period of time.
Processing three replications of one or more of these samples is an excellent
way to verify the daily operation and to familiarize new operators with the
AFIS PRO 2 instrument. Such performance tests are both a check on the AFIS
PRO 2 instrument and on the operator. These performance checks should be
monitored daily or weekly to build confidence and ensure proper
performance. Daily fluctuations will occur due to non-uniformity of sample or
procedure, but they should be within 15 percent of the average value.
Reference materials to be used as a performance check are shipped with the
AFIS PRO 2 instrument. Make copies of the reference material test results form
that is in the appendix, run the repetitions as requested, fill in the test results,
then send or fax the information to Uster Technologies as requested.

Trash Calibration
This screen allows the operator to perform trash calibration and operates in a
similar manner to Length calibration.
Trash Calibration requires 0.1 gram 35 cm card sliver for
calibration. Once a successful calibration has been achieved,
new Flow Values will be saved to disk.
1.
2.
When you initially select the TRASH button from the CALIBRATION
SELECTION screen, a window containing brief instructions will launch.
3.
PCT TIP
If you are unable to acquire enough events or the time to acquire events is
very slow, try this modification to the fiber individualizer before attempting
to process the sample for trash calibration.
Before selecting START to begin calibration, follow these steps:
1. Raise the cabinet top.
2. Remove the microdust Hose and plug the microdust Sleeve as
normally required.
3. Using tape and a piece of paper, cover half of the opening over the
counter-flow slow #1. (See Figure 7-1).
4. Process the .10 gram by 35 cm long sample as normal.
Blocking half of the counter flow slot air inlet should improve the time to
acquire events for Trash calibration.
Be sure to remove the paper from the counter flow slot after
Trash calibration is completed.
Event counts should reach 3,000 to complete sample (NL21). If 3000
Events are not completed before the sample is processed, add another .01
gram by 35 cm sample (NL21) to the Feed Tray.

5.
Depending on the results, the AFIS PRO 2 instrument may ask you to
make an adjustment to the flow control set screw. If an adjustment is
made, these three steps should be repeated.
6.
When calibration is complete the new flow values will be save. Select

PCT TIP
During trash calibration, if you observe that the te at 2% is
out of range, you can temporarily STOP calibration and adjust
the flow control screw, counter-clockwise, to increase value.
OR
You can adjust the flow control screw in a clockwise direction
to decrease value then continue on with the calibration

Maintenance as Required
It may be necessary to clean the tubes of the revolving cassette from time to
time.
The tubes can be cleaned using the cassette-cleaning tool with either a dry tip
on the end or with a tip that has been saturated with soapy water.
Generally, the dry cleaning method is sufficient; however, if you have run
sticky cotton, the tubes should be cleaned with the dampened tip.
To clean the tubes:
1.
Push the cassette-cleaning tool all the way through each of the tubes in
the cassette several times.
2.
The cassette can then be dried by letting it sit unused until it is dry, or by
blowing it with compressed air.

4.4.1
Routine Maintenance
For optimum performance, the fiber individualizer (FI) must be clean and the
pinned cylinders must spin freely. A thorough inspection should begin by
removing the drive belts from the fiber individualizer and FI motor. The
cylinders should spin freely by hand with no tight spots.
1.
Remove the microdust airline from the FI and loosen the four thumbscrews
that secure the FI cover plate.
2.
Carefully slide the FI cover plate off of the dowel pins, which position the
plate.
3.
Use compressed air or vacuum to clean around the pinned cylinders and
card flats.
4.
Remove the FI cover plate by loosening and removing the two cap
screws that secure the belt and pulley shield that covers the Fiber
Individualizer.
5.
6.
Loosen the socket-head screw on the locking collar and remove the
collar.
7.
Remove the socket-head screw on the journal bearing assembly and slide
the pinned cylinder away from the FI mounting plate so that the rear of
the cylinder is accessible.
8.
Clean the area behind each cylinder and remove any built-up dust or
fiber.
9.
10. Inspect the face of the card flats and other housing surfaces around the
cylinders.
11. Wipe clean all surfaces, which are exposed to the fiber during normal
processing.

If this condition occurs, check the lenses for contamination and clean as
necessary using lens cleaner or isopropyl alcohol and lens tissues
(papers) or a cotton tipped swab.
7.
After cleaning, the lenses should be clear with no residue of dust, fiber or
cleaner present. It may be necessary to follow the wet cleaning by
polishing with a clean, dry lens tissue or cotton swab.
Attention:
The source lens is surrounded by four openings used to flush
the lens with purge air. The edges of these holes are sharp
and may tend to catch fibers from a cotton swab. Care must
be taken during cleaning to avoid this.
8.
Inspect the o-ring face of the sensor cavity and replace the o-ring if
necessary.
9.
10. Inspect both sides of the 3-pin electrical connector. Remove any trash or
fibers from the socket. Check for correctly aligned pins.
11. Close the sensor and engage the latches in the following order:
a. Top right
b. Bottom left
c. Bottom right
d. Top left
12. Reinstall the fiber transport tube and slide the sensor toward the
individualizer until the tube is firmly seated in the Fiber Individualizer.
The sensor nozzle should be located 1.5 to 3.0 mm from the fiber
transport tube with the clear vinyl tubing providing a sleeve-like seal
between the tube and the nozzle. Tighten the mounting screws to 30 inlbs (7.5 N-m).

The AUTOJET cassette is available in two tubes sizes, large and small.
The large tube cassette is most commonly used for most card mat and
card sliver types.
The small tube cassette is mainly used by customers that test thin comber
sliver.
Check each tube for possible damage, cracks or burrs that could affect
the ability of sliver samples to move smoothly through the tubes.
2.
Clean the tubes using the tube brush provided with each AFIS PRO 2.
a. If necessary, plain water can be used to help clean the inside of the
tubes.
Note: DO NOT use soap or glass cleaning agents on the cassette tubes as
this will damage the anti-static film that is applied to the tubes by the

There are three jumpers on the fiber individualizer motor controller that should
be checked, especially when having to replace a defective controller with a
new one:
JP1
Motor Direction
JP3
5A Current Limit
JP5
Protection Mode
6.1.2
The fiber individualizer motor controller regulates the speed for the fiber
individualizer motor to one percent and limits the motor current to 5 amps in
the event of a lockup.
An LED (D4) will light up when the fiber individualizer motor controller is in an
overload condition. An overload condition can be caused by any of the
following:
The fiber individualizer motor speed on the AFIS PRO 2 should be set to
approximately 7600 rpm plus or minus 1%. This value (rpm) can be observed
in the scanning values of controller diagnostics in the AFIS PRO 2 software.
If necessary, the fiber individualizer speed can be adjusted closer to 7600 rpm
by turning the potentiometer (R14) on the fiber individualizer motor controller.

The control board relieves the host computer of the duties involved in
controlling and/or monitoring motors, valves, inputs, and other conditions in
the AFIS PRO 2. This allows the main (internal) host computer to be dedicated
for analyzing data from the Lint and Trash sensors, via their internal DSP
sensor boards.

The regulator regulates the main compressed air supply. A pressure indicator
gauge for the main air supply is located on the solenoid valve assembly on the
opposite side of the cabinet.
The Norgren air filter will help to protect the compressed air system from a
minimal amount of oil should it contaminate the customers compressed air
supply. Excess oil and water will automatically drain out the bottom of the filter
through a hose that leads to the bottom of the cabinet. We highly recommend
that the customer install a primary air filter system upstream of the AFIS PRO 2
.

CAUTION:
The Norgren filter is not designed to remove water vapor!
Uster Technologies, Inc. recommends that the customer install
an air dryer (and primary filter) to prevent water
condensation and oil contamination in the compressed air
supply.
Water and oil will damage the AFIS PRO 2 instrument and
VOID the factory warranty.
There is a YELLOW shut-off valve on top of
the filter assembly that allows the qualified
service technician or customer to temporarily
disable the compressed air for maintenance
or service purposes.

Settings /Adjustment
The following procedure describes how to adjust the blower for the proper
flow when the blower voltage is at center:
1.
From the AFIS PRO 2 MAIN MENU, select the SETUP button.
2.
3.
4.
Note: The lint flow reading in the upper right hand corner of the screen. The
Lint Flow should be approximately 48" H2O, plus or minus 1.0 H2O.
5.
Note: The sound insulation box surrounding the blower must first be
removed to gain access to the blower pot.
a. Viewing the blower from the rear of the cabinet, locate the blower
power cable and follow it to where it enters the blower housing.
b. Locate the blower adjustment pot access hole just to the right of the
power cable.
c. With an insulated pot adjustment tool, turn the pot until the Lint Flow
reads 48" H20, plus or minus 1.0 H2O.

Lint/Waste Box
12.1
The lint/waste box has a single compartment that collects the processed fiber
and trash. The blower is mounted on the backside of the lint/waste box. The
vacuum flow is distributed to the microdust sleeve, Lint Sensor, and fiber
individualizer trash collector and trash sensor (if equipped).
A metal screen separates
the fur filter from the
processed fiber. This
metal screen can be
removed by hand
(without the requirement
of tools) to access the fur
filter for cleaning. The
fur filter protects the
blower from
contamination by trash,
dust, and fiber
fragments.
If the air line will be
subjected to
temperatures that could
promote condensation, a
water filter attached to
the air line inside the lab
is recommended to
remove any
condensation that may
occur. Refer to Section
