SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
Installing and servicing air-conditioning equipment can be
hazardous due to system pressure and electrical components. Only trained personnel should install or service airconditioning equipment.
When working on air-conditioning equipment, observe precautions in the literature and on tags and labels attached
to unit. All electrical wiring should be done by a licensed
electrician.
Follow all safety codes. Wear safety glasses and work gloves.
Have a fire extinguisher available.

Before performing service or maintenance operations on


system, turn off all main power switches. There may be
more than one disconnect. Turn off accessory heater power
switch if applicable. Electrical shock can cause personal injury. TAG DISCONNECT SWITCH(ES) WITH
A SUITABLE WARNING LABEL.

GENERAL
These instructions cover the installation of field-installed
accessory electric heater packages for Electric Cooling Units
and Heat Pumps. Accessory electric heater packages are available from 5 to 20 kW. Consult Table 1 and Fig. 1 for package contents.

INSTALLATION
Heater Installation (Horizontal Airflow
Configuration)
1. Refer to unit Installation Instructions for complete unit
installation details. The minimum air quantity for safe electric heater operation is shown in Tables 2A and 2B.
IMPORTANT: When using accessory electric heat
and flexible ductwork, it is recommended that a sheet
metal sleeve be installed inside the first 12 in.
(304.8 mm) of the duct.
2. Remove blower/control box access panel. See Fig. 2.
3. Remove the electric heater and control box assembly from
packaging. Route the accessory electric heater lowvoltage control wires through the back of the unit control
box. See Fig. 3. Using wire tie provided in kit, route and
secure the accessory electric heater low-voltage wires with
the unit low-voltage wires.
4. Install electric heater control box by engaging the back
of the heater control box with the slots in the back of the
unit control box. Secure with the screws provided. See
Fig. 4.
5. Install heater assembly to blower-side plate. Ensure that
the tabs on the heater assembly engage the slots closest
to the indoor coil on the blower housing. See Fig. 5.
Secure heater assembly with screws provided in kit. See
Fig. 6.
6. Route and secure high-voltage wires as shown in Fig. 7.
7. Connect low-voltage control circuit wiring in the lowvoltage connection box on the unit by making proper electrical connections. See Fig. 8-11.

10. Orient blower housing for vertical airflow and slide into
vertical opening, making sure the flanges on the blower
side plates engage the tabs in the unit basepan. When
the blower housing is near final position, resistance will
be felt as the blower housing contacts the basepan insulation. This resistance can be overcome by applying a
slight force to the base of the blower. Continue sliding
blower until hole in side plate flange aligns with the hole
in the basepan. Secure blower to unit using screws removed in Step 5.
11. Install electric heater control box by engaging the tabs
back of the heater control box with the slots in the back
of the unit control box. Secure the heater control box
using the screws provided.

*Not applicable to High Efficiency units.

1. The unit must first be converted to vertical airflow configuration before the electric heater package is installed.
Refer to unit Installation Instructions.
NOTE: If heat pump units have already been factory converted to vertical airflow configuration, skip to Step 6.
2. Remove blower/control box access panel. See Fig. 2.
3. Disconnect indoor-fan motor leads from indoor-fan relay and unit contactor. Disengage wire tie securing wires
to the unit control box. See Fig. 12.
4. Remove indoor blower assembly. Remove screws
securing the filler bracket and relocate filler bracket to
vertical airflow application as shown in Fig. 13.
5. Remove the blower assembly support bracket. The screws
securing the support bracket can be accessed by removing the condenser side grille. Discard support bracket
and retain screws. Using the 2 speed nut clips provided
with the kit, reinsert the screws through the partition and
tighten to ensure watertightness. See Fig. 13.
6. Remove the electric heater and control box assembly from
packaging and remove safety shield from heater tray.
See Fig. 14.
7. Remove the plug holding the heater wiring bundle to
the heater tray, being careful not to damage wiring. Loosen
nuts on the heater terminals that hold the heater power
leads and ring terminals in place. See Fig. 15. Rotate the
wiring 180 degrees, so that the heater power leads now
leave in the opposite direction from the heater tray. Tighten
the nuts holding the heater power leads and ring terminals. Secure wire tie by inserting it into the engagement hole in heater tray.
8. Mount the safety shield over the limit switches using
2 screws provided. See Fig. 16.
9. Mount the electric heater assembly onto the indoor blower
housing. Insert the tabs on the heater assembly into the
slots closest to the blower wheel inlet. Secure to housing with 2 screws provided in kit. See Fig. 17.

12. Reconnect indoor-fan motor leads (refer to Tables 2A
and 2B for minimum cfm [L/s] required for accessory
electric heater operation to determine indoor-fan motor
speed when connecting leads) and reinsert wire tie into
unit control box. Secure wires to control box. See
Fig. 18.
13. Connect low-voltage control circuit wiring in the lowvoltage connection box on the unit by making proper
electric connections. See Fig. 8-11.

High-Voltage Connection To Unit Unit wiring


must be in compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC,
U.S.A. Standard) and any applicable local codes. Wiring label included with Accessory Electric Heater Kit should be
attached to base unit adjacent to base unit wiring label.
The accessory electric heater can be wired either separately from the unit, or as one single point connection.
Determine which wiring method will be used, and follow
the correct installation procedure.
WIRING HEATER SEPARATE FROM BASE UNIT
1. Size wire for base unit and heaters per NEC. Refer to
unit Installation Instructions for wire sizing. Refer to
Tables 3A and 3B for electric heater wiring sizing and
connection diagram.
2. Run high-voltage leads for the base unit and electric heat
through the appropriate inlet hole in the duct panel, and
through the high-voltage raceway to the control box.
3. Using lugs provided, connect power supply to leads from
unit and electric heater as shown in power connection
diagram. See Fig. 19. Insulate lug. Refer to Tables 3A
and 3B for the correct power connection diagram. (Refer
to proper connection diagram Fig. 20-25.)
4. Install dual ground lug using green ground screw in control box. See Fig. 3. Connect ground leads from base
unit power supply and electric heater supply to ground
lug.
5. Using field-supplied connectors, connect base unit power
supply to base unit power leads.
6. Replace blower/control box access panel and restore power
to the unit.

WIRING HEATER AS A SINGLE POINT POWER


CONNECTION
1. Size the wire gage for base unit and heater combinations
per NEC (U.S.A. Standard). Refer to Tables 4A-9B for
wire sizing and connection diagram.
2. Run the high-voltage and ground leads through the appropriate knockout. Run leads through the high-voltage
raceway to the electric heater control box.
3. Connect the ground lead to the ground lug attached to the
unit control box surface. See Fig. 3.
4. Units with fuses:
Connect the power leads to the fuse block and connect
the leads from the unit to the stripped leads from the
fuse block. (Refer to proper connection diagram
Fig. 20-33.)
Close door to electric heater control box making sure that
the door engages the dimple in the control box, which
will lock the door into place.
Units without fuses:
Connect power leads to heater and unit leads using connnectors provided. (Refer to proper connection diagram
Fig. 26-33.)
5. Install blower/control box access panel and restore power
to the unit.

ADJUST THERMOSTAT

SERVICE

To adjust thermostat for electric heat, refer to Table 10 for


heat anticipator settings for room thermostats. These settings may be changed slightly to provide a greater degree of
comfort for particular installations.

Limit switch provides overtemperature protection. Switch


malfunction, a result of improper handling, may prevent heating element from operating. Replace switch if malfunction
occurs.
