Mongolia
Mongolia is a landlocked country located between China and
Russia. It is a vast emptiness that links land and sky, and is
one of the last few places on the planet where nomadic life is
still a living tradition. Mongolia may have various
geopolitical, cultural and geographical meanings. Mongolia
consists of historic Outer Mongolia. The province of Inner
Mongolia is geographically and politically separate and
located in northern part of China yet it shares common
borders with Mongolia.
Traditional dress
Hats: One of the most colorful and original items of
Mongolian national dress is the traditional head wear. The
Mongolian head dresses differed in shape and purpose; there
were hats for the young and old, summer and winter & men
& women, holidays and ceremonies & fashionable and
everyday hats.

Del: The Del is loose calf-length tunic made of one piece of

material. It has long sleeves, Del high collar and buttons on
the right shoulder. The Del buttons. If they are not
commercially produced from decorative stones or silver, are

narrow strips of cloth tied into intricate knots.

Boots: The toes of boots are upturned, and several

explanations have been offered for this unconventional style.
If boots had upturned toes pre 1578 when Buddhism
introduced to Mongolia, then this would be an example of
religion using indigenous customs, beliefs etc. to support
advance their own religion.

Mongolian food:
The nomads that live in Mongolia sustain primarily from
products that are derived from cattle, sheep, horses and
yaks, which are domesticated. Meat is mostly cooked or used
in soups and dumplings. The large percentage of animal fat
in Mongolian diets helps the natives to withstand the cold
and also work outdoors.
The milk and cream derived from these animals is used to
make diverse beverages, cheese and other such products.
Some traditional dishes:
Dairy products in Mongolia food variety differ greatly in
terms of their taste. These products are called 'tsagaan idee'
and include a lot of milk. The inclusion of milk denoted

purity, kindness and unselfishness. Other ingredients include

aaruul (dried curd) and urum (thick cream), Mongolian butter
and kefir or soft yogurt.

Mongolia fun facts:

1. The two humped Bactrian camel is indigenous to
Mongolia. The annual Thousand Camel Festival is run by a
local non-governmental organization working to protect and
preserve the Bactrian camel population, which has been
steadily declining over the past twelve years. At the festival
youll get an opportunity to interact with the camels and
learn first-hand about the camel herders nomadic lifestyle.
2. In a country where distances are far and communication
can be difficult, it is important to maintain a sense of
community. People living in the Mongolian countryside will
always have a bowl of warm, salty milk tea ready for visitors
3. In winter youll find venders selling ice cream on the street
from paper boxes. Theres no need for a freezer at -30
degrees Celsius.
4. Wooden electricity poles are attached to a concrete base,
because without it the pole would simply snap from the
pressure of the freezing ground. This might not seem that
interesting, but its a pretty good demonstration of
Mongolian ingenuity.

5. The Golden Eagle festival is held over two days every

year, celebrating age-old Kazakh traditions. It begins with a
parade of eagle hunters on horseback, displaying their
elaborate hunting costumes and accessories. The eagles are
judged for their speed and agility, as the birds are released
from a cliff and swoop down to land on the arms of the
hunters below. The men demonstrate their courage and
horsemanship and a variety of traditional games.
