2.0 Hydraulic Design :2.1 Water way :Since the canal is lined, the clear linear waterway has been kept equal to
the average width of canal with marginal adjustment.
Top width at F.S.L. =1.1 + 2 * 1.79 * 1.5 = 6.47 m.
Clear waterway = (D/S bed width + top width at FSL) / 2
Clear waterway = (1.1 + 6.47) / 2 = 3.785 m.

m
However Provide 2 spans each of 1.9 m. & pier each of 0.6 m. thickness for fixing the gate.
Overall linear waterway = (No. of spans * width of clear span) + (no. of piers * pier thickness) =
(2 * 1.9) + (1 * 0.6) 4.4 m.

Number of vertical gates to be provided = 2

Height of gate = (U/S F.S.L. + 0.5) - Crest R.L.

Provide Gate Size = 1.9 * 2.45

Effective width provided = span length * no. of spans = 1.9 *3.8 m.

2.2 Crest Design :( i ) Crest Level :Crest has been provided 15 cm. above U/S or D/S CBL whichever is higher.
Crest level = max.(U/S CBL,D/S CBL) + 0.15
Crest level = MAX(12.62,12.62) + 0.15 = 12.77 m.
Provide Crest level at E.L. 12.77 m.
( ii ) Crest Width :U/S T.E.L. = U/S F.S.L. + Va2 / 2g
where, Va = Approach velocity i.e. Designed canal velocity in U/S.
g = Acceleration due to gravity = 9.81 m / sec2
Q = A * Va Va = Q / A
Va = Q / (b + nd) * d =
Va = 6.5739 / (1.15 + 1.5 * 1.84) * 1.84 =
U/S T.E.L. = 14.46 + (0.914^2 / (2*9.81)) =

0.97 m / sec.
D/S T.E.L. = 14.41 + (0.97^2 / (2*9.81)) =
14.458 m.
As per IS:7114-1973 Cl. 3.2.1 Crest width shall be fixed to a minimum of 2 / 3 H.
where, H is the head over the crest.
H = U/S T.E.L. - Crest E.L.
H = 14.503 - 12.77 =
Crest width = (2 / 3) * 1.733 =
Provide crest width = 1.2 m.
