Growing up in Nepal, I was repeatedly struck by the horrifying

political system, which lacked of good governance and

overshadowed development initiatives by perpetuating disparities in
the peoples living conditions. Since the past two decades, Nepal
has been going through extensive political, economic and social
transactions. Although the recent political change is expected to
pave the way for sustainable peace and stability, economic
prosperity and social transformation; but unfortunately it still has
not been able to overcome the Maoist insurgency, that escalated
from 1996 to 2006. The political crisis was followed by massive
earthquake in April 2015; which devastated Nepal and displaced
thousands of people and has put a tremendous stress on formal and
informal protection mechanisms and have exposed vulnerable
populations, women and children in particular, to exploitation and
abuse.
Moreover, the promulgation of new constitution, gives rights and
protection to the socially backward class and to some extent is
gender friendly; however, in practice the society is glaringly
patriarchal and the government policies have not been effective
enough to breakdown the inequalities. The disparity and poverty in
socioeconomic sphere has reinforced these hierarchies and
weakened the society. Deep rooted gender discrimination still
prevails in Nepal and there is a traditional, conservative and
oppressive caste system which has been hampering the
mainstreaming of women in development activities. Girls are still
deprived from access to opportunities and are considered curse to
the family; spending money on their education is taken as watering
the neighbours garden. I am very emotional regarding this matter
and I feel a strong desire to change this mind-set. Statistics show
that some development initiatives have taken place in the area of
health, gender and education; social welfare and development
programmes have been harnessed but not optimized. At the nongovernment sector, there is a shortage of development
professionals with the right background involved in this process. The
current practice of relying mainly on paraprofessionals and on
untrained work force, to deliver services, is not sufficient. Most of
the educated youth have migrated to pursue their career in big
firms abroad, which has now turned into the most lucrative
profession. I observed that there is lack of specialized people who
could bring about the most needed changes in the development
sector of underdeveloped country like Nepal; and this instigates me
to be one of the catalysts to contribute to the nation-building
process.
Over the years, I became committed and started working in the
social sector. I have had the opportunity to provide my service, as a
volunteer, in a non-profit making, humanitarian organisation called
Kidproof Nepal. I provided training on physical, personal, Internet

and technology to lower secondary students and educated

secondary level students on emotional safety. In addition, I imparted
knowledge on healthy living to primary students and familiarised
students on citizenship and ethics. I also helped raise awareness on
anti-bullying to students.
Furthermore, after finishing my Bachelors in Development Studies I
started my Masters course; and in the meantime, I started looking
for an institution which could impart me with world-class Masters
course which had strong track record of research and teaching in
Development Studies and luckily I found Alice Salomon University of
Applied sciences. Regarding English language requirement, I have
been taught and examined in English throughout my academic
career; I have successfully completed the tertiary studies in which
the language of instruction, examination and assessment was in
English from a British School from where I completed my A-levels.
While going through daad.de website I got link to your University
and the courses offered by your institution. In blink of seconds I got
attracted to one of the course Intercultural Conflict Management
(M.A.). Investigating I found that this course could enrich my
understanding and knowledge to Conflict, Peace and Development
management which are intercultural in nature. I believe that this
course relates to balance mix of finance required for todays conflict
managers.
I have always dreamed about studying Intercultural Conflict
Management (M.A.) abroad and your university is more that perfect
to make my dreams real. I dream to be a strongest force in avoiding
or solving intercultural conflict problems. After, I read carefully the
curriculum and the course requirements, I believe that it perfectly
matches my interests. I want to study this program abroad because
it will allow me to broaden my perspective and contribute to my
personal development by expanding my knowledge and widening
my experience in a variety of academic discipline. I consider it a
challenge and an opportunity to explore and identify ways of
improving myself. Thanks to the University website, I gained useful
information about the University campus and the student life.
Further, I have no doubt that the opportunity of perusing my
Masters Degree at your esteemed institution will equip me with
international standard knowledge and exposure on social justice
perspective; and I look forward to being a part of Alice Salomon
University of Applied sciences in the very near future.
Germany has been recognized as a knowledge center with rich
study traditions and well-known Universities. The German
educational system is famous for helping students to develop their
own professional individuality. International students from all over
the world come to study in Germany. The policy of zero to low tuition

fees for majority of the courses and other expenses for those who
come to study in Germany are relatively low compared to other
European countries. Due to its central geographic and economic
position in continental Europe, Germany is often described as the
power-house of Europe. Many international companies have
departments in Germany due to the favorable economic conditions.
This feature helps students at German universities by opening up
possibilities to gain internships at many of these companies and
allowing them to create their own professional networks for their
future careers. This entire factor lured me into applying for Germany
for my further studies.
In the context of Nepal getting a degree from international and well
reputed college matters a lot to find a job rather than studying in a
college of Nepal or indeed India and I really enjoy practical based
education. In Nepal the way of teaching is theory focused due to
limited infrastructure and inexperienced faculty. Further the
unmanaged education system of Nepal with frequent strikes and
political interference and the long time to gets results really disturbs
further the quality of education and the learning experience.
My parents are my real god, who has supported me in each and
every point of my life. Now also to complete my further degree they
are ready to sponsor me in any phase of my life and I really feel so
proud to have a family like me who has always supported me and
will surely supported in near future to complete my further
education in Germany.
I will always be there to bring my pro-activeness, optimism,
enthusiasm, passion and commitment to exceed your expectations
and maintain high standards at your university. Thank you for
considering my request. I look forward to hear affirmative response.
Sincerely yours,
Shivani Thapa
