Blast From The Past

German physicists have learn the secrets of splitting of the uranium atom. Fear spread over the
world knowing that there is bomb that have
enough energy to decimate a city instantly.
We learn about this bomb from a man Germany
who goes by a name of Albert Einstein. Einstein
was a former scientist who had learn of what the
Germans could do with the bomb. After learning
this, Einstein fled from Germany to America to inform the president that Germany had acquired
the technology to build a super weapon. He also
suggested that America should start similar research so that America could repel the threat of
Germany. This is the beginning of the Manhattan
Project.

The picture on the right
was the Trinity site. It is
where United States tested the first atomic bomb.
This 51,000-acre area
was used to test military
missiles and bombs. This
is first site where the
atomic was built and
used.

The Building of the Bomb

The Atomic bomb was built by a group of people who had extremely intelligence, experienced and effective leaders. Some of the
leaders are army corps of engineers General
Leslie Groves, physicist J. Robert Oppenhiemer and Enrico Fermi, DuPonts Crawford
Greenwalt and Kelloggs Percival Keith, MITs
Vannevar Buss, Harvards James B. Conant,
and Berkeleys Ernest O. Lawrence. Vannevar
Bush asked President Roosevelt to create
The Office of Scientific Research and Development. Under Bushs direction, the most talented scientists and engineers were mobilized
and developed radar, the proximity fuse, and
the atomic bomb, inventions that were critical
to the Allied victory I World War ll.

Effects of the
Manhattan
Project
The nuclear testing had some
long term effects
on the environment. The testing had more
powerful nuclear
technology like
the hydrogen
bombs. This project also led to a
nuclear arms
race between the
United States
and Soviet and
increased tensions. Which
help led to the
start of the Cold
War. The Manhattan Project
change the
shape of our
world forever.

Aftermath of the Manhattan Project

The Manhattan Project costed nearly $2 billion and
employed about 130,000 people. It was the US largest endeavors during World War ll. Its success in the
nuclear age was to harnessed for both military and
peaceful purposes. Work on the Manhattan continued as they had further testing in 1946 at Bikini Atoll.
They then transfer the research to the United States
Atomic Energy Commission so they can learn more
about it. Though it was a secret program, the research was stolen by Soviet Spies. The US atomic
hegemony ended in 1949 when the Soviets detonated their first nuclear weapon. That was the ending of
the Manhattan Project. Manhattan Project
