TQM vs BPR

Total quality management


TQM consists of organization-wide efforts to install
and make permanent a climate in which an
organization continuously improves its ability to
deliver high-quality products and services to
customers. While there is no widely agreed-upon
approach, TQM efforts typically draw heavily on
the previously-developed tools and techniques
of quality control.

BPR
Initiated by Top-Down Approach Due to great changes
Staff Resistance; hence management support is must

TQM
Top-Down Approach as well as Bottom-up are possible as
there is less resistance

Basic Assumptions
BPR
Assumes the existing system is useless and suggests
starting it over. Hence aims on dramatic results

TQM
Existing practices are principally right and useful. Therefore
target is to improve on the basis existing processes
Hence aims on smoothly and incremental improvements

BPR
The project can be controlled to a specified area only

TQM
Emphasis on total involvement, including all the stakeholders
including suppliers and customers. Also suggests involving all
the processes in the company, including HR management,
order fulfilling, manufacturing, marketing and customer
management and others.

Standardization
BPR
Emphasis on flexibility and believes that standardization
would increase the complexity of the process. Therefore,
standardization is rare and is much lower.

TQM
Standardization is one of the key points. It aims on
standardize the practices, thus achieving a consistent
performance.

TQM
To validate against standards it is extremely necessary to
have detailed documentations

Emphasis more on the enabling role of information
technology.

Emphasis on the use of statistical process control.

It is more a project. It is with a clear target that should be
achieved as soon as possible.

TQM
It is a cultural issue. Once the culture is built, it is absorbed
in the daily operation

It is a risky project that is suitable for organizations in deep
trouble or facing great challenges

TQM
It can be treated as a consolidation approach for the
organizations to maintain continuously improvements.
