SECTION A
INTRODUCTION
This manual contains instruction for teachers to conduct the oral assessment
during the teaching and learning process. It also contains some suggested activities for
assessment. It also shows how ULBS can be conducted at different phases of a lesson.
Two sample lesson plans which incorporate ULBS assessment are included as a guide for
teachers.
AIM
This manual aims to facilitate teachers to conduct the oral asessement during the
teaching and learning process.
OBJECTIVES
Teachers will be able to:
i.

conduct the oral assessment (ULBS BI) as part of the teaching and learning process.

ii.

conduct the oral assessment effectively.

SECTION B
GUIDELINES FOR TEACHERS
1.

ULBS can be carried out at any phase of a lesson. In Section C, suggested activities
for assessment and the corresponding models where ULBS can be carried out are
included.

2.

In consultation with the teacher, students who have been identified for ULBS
assessment will do the presentation.

3.

Presentation of students should be relevant to the theme/ topic/ activity being


taught.

Pre-testing

Inform the students who are going to be assessed about:

the model and activity chosen

b.

the time and date of the assessment

c.

the appropriate lesson phase in which the assessment will be carried out

Give them time to prepare before any assessment is carried out.

While-testing
1.
Observe and assess students presentation.
2.

Use the Oral English Test (OET) individual profile form (refer to Appendix i) to
record score.

Post-testing
1.

Inform the score to the students.

2.

Re- assesses the students if deemed necessary/ requested.

3.

File all the OET individual profile forms in separate files for each class.

4.

Keep all the files in a designated place where they are readily accessible.

5.

Prepare for the subsequent assessment as stipulated in the ULBS manual.

6.

Transfer the score to the Borang Markah Induk (BMI) after the final assessment in
Form Five.

Laporan ini adalah untuk kegunaan Lembaga Peperiksaan Malaysia.
Laporan hendaklah ringkas, padat dan tepat.
Laporan hendaklah berhubung dengan perkara yang perlu diambil perhatian dan
kesalahan yang dilakukan.
Jika ruang tulis tidak mencukupi, gunakan kertas tambahan.
Laporan hendaklah dihantar ke Lembaga Peperiksaan Malaysia melalui Ketua
Pentaksir Kawasan. (u.p: Ketua Penolong Pengarah, Sektor Penyelidikan Dan
Dasar)

1. REPORT ON STUDENTS LEVEL BASED ON CONSTRUCT


(Strengths, Weaknesses and Errors)
1.1. Give appropriate responses / Converse on a topic effectively:
a) Strengths
Students are able to converse on the given topic and response accordingly.
This indicates that they are able to understand the topic.
b) Weaknesses

Some students especially the weaker students tend to use their mother tongue
(Bahasa Melayu) when they are unable to find the appropriate words in
English. They need constant guidance in order to converse properly.
c) Errors
The students use short answers in response to the topic. Main ideas are given
but no elaborate explanation is given.
Example - Teacher :What is a Silent Killer?
Student : Smoking.
1.2. Speak fluently using correct and acceptable pronunciation
a) Strengths
A majority of the students can pronounce the words correctly.
b) Weaknesses
Students face difficulties when they pronounce words that they are unfamiliar
with as example, diseases and worth.
c) Errors
Overall, students pronunciations are greatly influenced by Bahasa Malaysia.
Sometimes, assessor cant comprehend the meaning until a thorough
questioning is done.
1.3. Speak coherently:
a) Strengths
Students have the general ideas on what to articulate.
b) Weaknesses
The students are unable to present their ideas with the correct sequence. For
instance, important details are mentioned after minor details have been
discussed thoroughly.
c) Errors
Some students are prone to present their ideas in an incorrect order.
Example Student: Diseases like lung cancer can happen because of the
smoke. This cause by the long time effect by the smoke. Smoking is a silent
killer.
1.4. Speak the language using a wide range of appropriate vocabulary within context:
a) Strengths
There are a variety of vocabularies used to make their presentation more
interesting. Example big is replaced by enormous, huge.
b) Weaknesses
Students can be ambitious with words sometimes and tend to make mistakes
or the meaning of the whole sentence is changed.

c) Errors
Students tendency to rely on direct translation without considering the effect
of the word to the meaning of the overall sentence.
1.5. Speak using correct grammar
a) Strengths
Students manage to use grammar at a satisfactory level.
b) Weaknesses
However, there are minor mistakes committed by the students and thus, causes
misunderstanding.
c) Errors
Students are unable to use proper pronoun especially pronouns that involved
differentiating male and female. They are also weak in using articles, singular
and plural noun.

3. COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS
3.1. Models used by the candidates
The models were good for it stimulates the candidates to speak.
3.2. Suitability of models
Candidates seemed interested to the models, but it could be improvised by having
different levels of questions in accordance to the students level of proficiency. The
models provided should also be constructed in relevance to the students interests.
4. SUGGESTIONS TO CANDIDATES
Candidates should not feel inferior and intimidated by the teacher or assessor. They
should be confident with their answer.

5. SUGGESTIONS TO TEACHERS
Teachers should try not to intimidate students while assessing them. A good way to
evaluate may be the time when they do not realise that they are being assessed. The
students tend to be confident when they do not realise that they are being assessed.
6. ISSUES AND SUGGESTIONS FOR ULBS
The teacher in charge of the assessment should be given full responsibility of the
evaluation. This is to ensure that the teacher can do the work without any interference
from others. They can refer to their KPS for assistance but overall, the report should be
done by them as they are the ones who teach the assessed students.
7. OTHER MATTERS
New teachers should be given a short course on how the assessment is carried out in
schools for they are still new and needs to know what to do. This ensures the credibility
of the assessment.
