Faithfulness is what God requires

A verse of scripture in 1 Corinthians chapter 4 has recently grabbed my attention and given me a
new perspective on what matters in our walk with God on this earth:

1 Corinthians 4:1: Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the
mysteries of God.
1 Corinthians 4:2: Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.

What struck me while reading verse 2 is this: a number of good things that we pursue in life and
ministry are actually not what God requires of us, even though many of these things are important
and very valuable. What God requires is faithfulness.
It hit me hard that God did not say He requires success, or great accomplishments, or a good name,
or even a great church or denomination. What He considers principal and fundamental is rather
faithfulness. This means that when all is said and done, the thing that God will be looking for will be
faithfulness in each of His children. He will not be assessing how successful you were in life, but He
will most denitely assess how faithful you were.

Who does God consider faithful?

From Gods perspective, the faithful steward is the one who stays true to that which he/she was
called or tasked to do and does not stray or deviate from it for any reason:

Luke 12:42: And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall
make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?
Luke 12:43: Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall nd so doing
doing.
Luke 12:44: Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.

So the faithful steward is the one the Lord will nd doing exactly what He asked for. It is the one who
protects and maintains the purity of Gods commission and does not dilute it, enhance it, pervert

it, or substitute something else that seems better or easier or more sensible!
Faithfulness is therefore the foundation upon which we must build our lives and all our service in
the Kingdom of God. Without it we will likely labour in vain. We should not pretend we are labouring
for God when we are not doing exactly what He asked for. We cannot pursue our own ideas or
formulations and persist in the deception that we are doing Gods work. Gods work is what He
prescribed. Anything that varies from that is not Gods work, regardless of how good it looks.
