EARTHQUAKE!!
In Italian It Is: TERREMOTO! The word that Is

on everyone's lips here. What a terrible

and terrifying disaster! But we praise God

that even though we felt it here, there was

no serious injury we know of In Terracina,
and none to us personally. We are deeply
touched by the concern for our safety
shown by so many of you.
What is left?

The saddest thing we heard was from, the

Mayor of a small, poor town that was

completely destroyed. His comment to TV

cameras was,"We have left only our eyes
with which to cry."
What was left behind?
A man was found dead on his mattress - the
mattress stuffed with several million Italian

lire. Jesus made the point long ago

(Matthew 6:19,20) - the earthquake under
scored it.

What was discovered?

It Is reported that a priest has been indicted

for fraud. Several years ago he raised
about half a billion lire to restore the church

building. The earthquake turned up the

box in which he is accused of having hid
the money under the church's stone floor.

What to do?

Pray much for the victims, dear ones, and

remember to thank God each day for His
watch and care over us. As horrifying as

this was, we were reminded of the Scripture

that says we will cry for even worse: for the
rocks and the mountains to fall on us. If we

THE POPE'S SHOOTING - AFTERMATH

We praise the Lord that the would-be assassin failed in his purpose! Such violence cannot be justified, no
matter who the intended victim might be. The shock is perhaps even greater when a popular person of
international prominence is the outlaw's objective. And greater yet because in this case, the victim is
widely known as earnestly desiring and praying for peace. And this leads many - and among them, many
who are not members of the group of which the Pope is the head - to slip from sympathy for the victim to
approval or sentimental acceptance of the organization he represents.
We praise the 61 year old Polish gentleman for his generous spirit of love that caused him to forgive his
would-be killer. We admire and respect his erudition. We value highly his obvious spirituality and
energetic pursuit of the principles for which he stands. The man is apparently eminently fitted for the
position he occupies. We pray that he may yet live and enjoy good health for many years.
But whether in active, normal health or recuperating from this unprovoked attempt on his life, our
sympathy and admiration is for the man. The anti-biblical positions advocated by him as head of his
organization cannot be accepted by those who base their faith on the recorded revelation Cod provides in
the scriptures.
As Giuseppe Italiano, preacher in Terracjna, said,"W e feel wounded, not because he is Pope, but because

he is a human being the danger is that the weaker in faith might accept false teaching because of
sympathy for the person concerned. Such folk lose bight of the difference between Christian charity and
God's teaching in the Word

But he who puts faith in Jesus only will not be trapped."

TEAMWORK
Charles (I.), Vito Gentile (center) and Giuseppe

and wherever he is needed. Giuseppe is the

This fall Charles begins the academic year with the
teaching of a course especially requested by the
students: "Word Studies in the New Testament."

WIRED FOR SOUND!

Some news that I feel is beautiful! Ifs about Charles.

Before leaving the states on our last furlough, we noticed

Charles had trouble hearing people if they were to the side or
in back of him. When we arrived home here in Italy, we
noticed he did not always hear the telephone or the office
door buzzer. We took him for a hearing test and found that
his hearing loss was 30% in one ear and 35% in the other,
