Family Triathlon

Challenge

EMS Education, the

global education
provider, has
announced it
will be hosting the GEMS
Triathlon Challenge - a
family friendly triathlon on
30th January 2016.
Now held for the second
time, GEMS Education has
organised the Triathlon
Challenge to encourage
physical activity and
movement amongst
students, parents, teachers
and educational staff. Studies
have shown that nearly 78
per cent of UAE children
lack the physical exercise
that can protect them from
cardiovascular disease. By
organised activities like the
Triathlon Challenge, GEMS
Education is emphasising
the importance of a healthy
lifestyle for the UAEs youth.
A family friendly event, the
GEMS Triathlon Challenge
is designed for all, regardless
of activity level, encouraging
everyone to participate.
The response we
received for our last
Triathlon Challenge was
overwhelming, and the
decision to organise it again
was based on this, says
Craig Lamshed, Principal
and CEO of Cambridge
International School - Dubai.
There are activities planned
for every age and for all
fitness skills. We know that
this will be a fun family day
out, but it also allows us to
encourage healthy activities
amongst our students, their
families and friends, Mr
Lamshed continued.
The Triathlon Challenge
has been designed to mimic
an actual triathlon but
with different activity level
requirements based on
varied age groups. Adults
participating will swim
for 425m, cycle for 16km
and run for 6km, whereas
children aged five to nine
year olds will swim for 75m,
cycle for 4km and run for
2km.

Added bonus Sneak in a little

experience, why not invite a few
friends over to join in the fun? Have
each guest bring their favorite

The Unfathomable Beauty

of the Faroe Islands
Kate McCulley at adventurouskate.com

READ. JANUARY, 24 - JANUARY, 30, 2016

have been to the end of the

Earth and it is GLORIOUS.
My time in the Faroe Islands
was absolutely enchanting.
These are some of the most
beautiful islands I HAVE EVER
SEEN. Thats not something to say
casually! I mean it.
Maybe the most beautiful islands
in the world arent filled with palm
trees and sunshine but instead
cliffs and cloud-encircled islands
and waterfalls tumbling into teal
seas.
And yet the Faroe Islands remain
so unknown to travelers. The few
that venture here mostly Danes,
though I met a few French tourists
as well are rewarded with an
absurdly pristine natural paradise.
And aside from the occasional
cruise ship stop, a paradise virtually
devoid of tourists.
The islands are actually not
that difficult to visit. During the
summer, there are twice weekly
flights from London on Atlantic
Airways, as well as a variety of
Scandinavian cities. Travelers with
more time on their hands can take
ferries from Iceland or Denmark.
The best reason to visit these
islands? Beauty, beauty, beauty.
Over and over, I was stunned by
the scenery. I was grateful that the
tourism board arranged a hire car
for me, because I was pulling over
everywhere to take photos.
My wonder began from the
moment my flight descended into

the islands. To my great surprise,

the islands all seemed to be raised
high into the air, with the majority
of the coastline consisting of high
cliffs. Beaches? They exist, but there
arent many of them.
This mountainous landscape

FAROE ISLANDS

is one reason why travel around

the islands was difficult and timeconsuming as recently as six years
ago. Today, there are many new
bridges and tunnels throughout the
islands including one that leads
to Gsadalur.

Gsadalur, on the island of Vagar,

was the absolutely most beautiful
place I visited in the Faroe Islands.
This waterfall is what originally
inspired me to visit the Faroe
Islands, and I was thrilled that I
finally got to.

I left the Faroe Islands with a

wistful heart. Three days was
NOT enough time even though
my three days were packed with
nonstop activities, I yearned to see
more, to drive to the edges of the
islands and photograph even more

GSADALUR

ISLAND OF VAGAR

landscapes.
These islands are an absolute
treasure. I feel like Ive stumbled
upon a secret so monumental, I want
to shout it from the rooftops. The
Faroe Islands enchanted me, and
theyre waiting to enchant you, too.

A Pan Latin Dinner

T
READ. JANUARY, 24 - JANUARY, 30, 2016

oro Toro is known to be

Dubais finest Pan Latin
restaurant; we wanted to
know the hype behind it so
we decided to give it a go. Tucked
secretly away behind Grosvenor
House Tower 2, this fine dining

restaurant will leave you in awe as

the facade greets you with a fiery
hue of orange and two bulls right
at the entrance. The interior has
impressed us with its rustic vibe and
calm mood, but the question is, will
its appearance be as appealing as

the food?
Once seated at our tables, our
server was kind enough to give us a
quick rundown on what to expect
from their menu. Their appetisers
were basically split into cold and hot
small plates; so to start off the night,
for cold plates, we decided to have
their Smoked Guacamole, Seared
Seafood Ceviche which contained
prawns, calamari and scallops
and their famous Toro Toro Salad.
Everything was so much better
than expected and we can safely
say that our two favourites were the
guacamole and the ceviche. The Toro
Toro salad had a bit of strong onion
flavour to it but, its nothing that
the good ol guac cant fix. For the
hot plates, we opted for two dishes
which were the Crispy Prawns and
the Seared Sea Scallops. They were
both excellent, and nothing less.
Knowing the Pan Latin cuisine, of
course, we didnt miss to try out their
meat cuts so for the main course, it

Ingredients:
- 4 boneless chicken breast halves
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 6 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 slices cooked turkey ham
- 1/2 cup seasoned bread crumbs

Chicken
Cordon Bleu

Instructions:
1. Preheat oven to 175 degrees C
(350 degrees F). Coat a 7x11 inch
baking dish with nonstick cooking
spray.
Prep time: 10 mins
Total time: 35 mins
Serves: 4

2. Pound chicken breasts to 1/4 inch

thickness.

was fair to try out their Churrasco

Skewer which had Picanha Steak,
Wagyu Rib Eye Steak, Australian
Lamb Chops and Achiote Marinated
Chicken. The dish is made for two
people so it was a fair quantity. The
beef and lamb chops were cooked to
perfection as you can feel the meat
melt in your mouth. The chicken
was marinated beautifully as you
can feel the flavours exploding in
your mouth. For the sides, we had
a scrumptious plate of Mix Roasted
Mushrooms.
Of course after that meal, youd
want to cleanse your palette with
a good drink; we would highly
suggest you have the La Rubia
which is a mixture of passion fruit,
orange juice, lime, mint, sugar
and lemonade. This drink has a
zesty flavour to it so if you like sour
flavoured drinks with a hint of
sweetness in it, this ones for you. If
you prefer something different with
a more spicy twist, the Fresco will
suit you; it contains lime, ginger,
mint, vanilla syrup, apple juice and
ginger ale.
We capped off the night with the
view of the Marina waterway, a good
drink and an excellent dinner. Toro
Toro has definitely exceeded our
expectations.

3. Sprinkle each piece of chicken

on both sides with salt and
pepper. Place 1 cheese slice and 1
turkey slice on top of each breast.
Roll up each breast, and secure
with a toothpick. Place in baking
dish, and sprinkle chicken evenly
with bread crumbs.
4. Bake for 30 to 25 minutes, or
until chicken is no longer pink.
Remove from oven and place 1/2
cheese slice on top of each breast.
Return to oven for 3 to 5 minutes,
or until cheese has melted. Remove
toothpicks, serve immediately.

Body Language
Can it make a difference in communication?
By Mae Cabigas

READ. JANUARY, 24 - JANUARY, 30, 2016

hen we think about

communication,
we think about
interactions, this is
what Amy Cuddy says during her
TEDGlobal speech in 2012. As a
social psychologist, she admits that
as social scientists, they are really
fascinated with body language, and
were particularly interested in other
peoples body language, and that
when we think about nonverbal
behaviour, or body language -but we call it nonverbals as social
scientists -- its language, so we
think about communication.
A simple handshake or lack ofcan portray a lot of different
meanings, to different
people. To further
elaborate on what
body language
is, and how
we should
pay more
attention
to it, READ
reached out to
Ms. Monique
Pretorius, Senior
Management
Associate at Spearhead
Training and a body language expert
in the U.A.E.

How important is body

language, especially in a
diverse cultural city like
Dubai?
Our body language has a major
impact on how our words are
interpreted. Body Language is
controlled by our subconscious
mind, so we might say something
different to what we are actually

thinking. Body Language includes:

our posture, facial expressions,
eye movement, hand gestures
and personal space requirement.
Different cultures have different
personal space bubbles and
intensity of eye movement. So,
standing too close and giving too
much eye contact while talking to
someone, could make them feel
uncomfortable resulting in them
displaying negative body language.
It is very important not to label, or
stereotype different cultures by
what to expect from their body
language, while communicating.
The best way is to observe and
acknowledge where the other
person is from, and to slightly
mirror his or her positive
body language.

What are the

common
actions both
negative and
positive that
we should start
to notice in
ourselves?

Positive body language

to focus on is: good posture
and a smile that demonstrates
confidence, open hand gestures
that show openness and at least
20-30cm personal space distance
with most people. Your eye
movement and facial expressions
should complement your words;
otherwise the message will not be
clearly understood by the listener.
Men should adapt their handshakes
to that of the other person. The
strength of the handshake should
reflect the other persons. So it could

range from a strong handshake to

a very soft handshake. In the Arab
world gentlemen should only shake
a ladys hand when it has been
offered first by the lady. Always
wait for the hand to be offered.
Otherwise NEVER offer your hand.
Negative body language to avoid
is a sluggish posture and fidgeting
with your hands; it indicates you are
nervous or bored. Impatient head
nodding, narrowing of your eyes
and rubbing your chin can indicate
that you do not believe, or trust,
the speaker. Standing too close
to someone and finger pointing is
not respected in any culture. Not
acknowledging someone with eye
contact, and looking away while
they speak, also demonstrates a lack
of interest.

Is it important for us to
study or observe other
peoples body language
as well as our own?

It is important to have good selfawareness, and understand how

other people perceive you. Getting
feedback from friends and close
colleagues can ensure that your
body language enhances your
message, and does not confuse
the listener. Building professional
relationships at work will ensure
that you better understand the
culture and personality of your

colleagues and customers, so you

are not confused by their body
language. Do not assume that you
know what they mean; ask questions
to ensure the message is clear.

What can you tell us

about Power Posing?

Power Posing is the act of

displaying a very confident posture,
to make you feel more dominant,
especially when you are not
feeling confident e.g. just before
an interview. There is scientific
evidence that showed that sitting
or standing in a certain position
for two minutes or more raises
testosterone levels and lowers stress
hormone (cortisol) levels. So stand
tall, with shoulders back, and have
positive powerful thoughts!

Do you think changing

the way we hold our
body or posture will
help us in being more
confident and show off
our confidence as well?

Yes. Body language can be practised

and can enhance confidence.
Maintain your sincerity and stand
tall, smile, and have open hand
gestures which demonstrate: I
am approachable and confident,
come and talk to me if you have
any questions and do not judge me
before you know me.

veryone wants to look

younger, but it seems
that as we age, we cant
evade the inevitable
wrinkles and face lines, but
did you know that theres
a way we can combat this?
Naturally. How? By practicing
facial yoga of course, we know
it may sound silly but these
small and simple exercises for
your face will help tighten the
muscles and increase the blood
circulation and oxygen to your
skin. With proper execution
and routine practice, face yoga
has been known to reshape
jaw lines, banish under-eye
circles and lift your smile. Its
a completely natural way to
enhance your face! Unlike your
workout classes, one of the
best things about face yoga is
that it takes very little time and
can be done anywhere its
a great practice to do after a
meditation session.

Fish Face

Its a funny name, but the

name says it all. Youre helping
rid your face of smile lines
by sucking in your cheeks
holding the tissue of your
cheeks in between your teeth
and making fish lips. Now try
to smile while holding that
pose. Keep your eyes open (no
blinking) until your eyes begin
to water. Then relax for a few
seconds and move on to your
next exercise.

Forehead Smoothing
This is probably the easiest
out of all these exercises, this
massaging move will get rid
of angry forehead lines. Place
both hands at the centre of

your forehead, spanning your

fingers from hairline to brow
line. Then pushing slightly
against your skin, slowly
slide your fingers outwards
towards your temples. Repeat 8
times, relaxing for a second in
between each move.

Oil Pulling

Neck Stretch

1. Oil pull first thing in the morning before brushing your

teeth, eating or drinking anything.
2. Swish 1tbsp of oil around your mouth for 15-20 minutes.
3. Spit it out into the trash (not the sink as the oil will clog
it up), brush your teeth as normal and rinse.
4. Pull at least 4 times a week, or everyday depending to
your liking.

Throw your head back so your

chin is pointed towards the
sky. Open your mouth as wide
as it can go, then kiss the air.
By bringing your mouth from
a wide open to a pucker, youll
feel the skin on your neck
tighten. This will help keep neck
lines from looking down at bay.
Each of these moves, done in
a cycle and with other face
yoga practices, will leave you
with a smoother, more glowing
face, and if
youthfulness
isnt
motivating
enough,
look at
it as a
calming
exercise
for your
morning
or evening
routine.

Oil pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic natural remedy for

improving health. It involves the use of pure oils to pull out
harmful bacteria, fungus or other harmful organisms from
your mouth, teeth or throat.

HEALTH

As we age our eyelids get

heavier. This is not only a
nuisance, but it can also
obstruct your vision into late
adulthood. To combat this and
widen our eyes, look forward
and then lift your brow as high
as it will go, almost as though
your friend has just told you
something shocking. Next,
close your eyesstill keeping
your eyebrows lifted. Your
lid will almost flutter when
holding this pose. Hold for 20
seconds, and then relax.

Meet the Nissan TITAN Warrior

READ. JANUARY, 24 - JANUARY, 30, 2016

ust one year after the production

version of the all-new Nissan
TITAN XD made its world
debut at the North American
International Auto Show, the TITAN
Warrior Concept was unveiled on
the very same stage. A design study
created to demonstrate how the
Cummins 5.0L V8 Turbo Diesel
engine-equipped TITAN XD can be
adapted for off-road adventure use
as well as for its heavy-duty work
capabilities the TITAN Warrior
Concept features unique exterior
and interior design treatments and
a modified off-road suspension. The
TITAN Warrior Concept creators
had more than a strong foundation
on which to build their vision of a
bold and expanding future in the
full-size pickup market, they had a
familiar one. As part of the group
that brought the American TITAN
to life a group that ranged from
Tennessee, Michigan, Mississippi,
Indiana, Arizona and California the
design team imagined how their
original TITAN design, inspired by
warriors in ancient Greek mythology,
might evolve to extreme levels of
adventure duty.

Q60 sports coupe at the 2016
North American International
Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit.
Designed and engineered to
perform, the Q60 offers a compelling
combination of daring design and

exhilarating performance and

dynamics. The bold exterior of the
Q60 expresses a powerful elegance
through its expressive proportions and
taut, muscular lines. The sports coupe
maintains the distinctive lines and
sharp angles of the original concept,

first revealed at the 2015 NAIAS twelve

months ago. Innovative drivetrain
technologies deliver a powerful drive,
bringing the Q60s dynamic promise
to life. The high performance 3.0-liter
V6 twin-turbo engine from the new
and exclusive VR powertrain family

continues the brands longstanding

heritage of six-cylinder powertrains
production. The new V6 engine comes
in two power ratings: 300hp or 400hp,
with the latter offering one of the
best power-to-efficiency ratios in the
sports coupe class.

Assassins Creed
Wraps On Filming

Movie Based On Londons Hatton

Garden Jewel Heist in the Works
Metrodome is among backers of a feature film based on the Hatton Garden
heist that took place in London last year. According to Screen Daily, The
Hatton Garden Job is the films working title, and it will be produced by
Mark Harris and Ben Jacques with a script from Simon Cluett. It is hoped
that filming will begin in the spring.Talks are underway in order to secure
life rights and on screen representation rights of those involved in the heist.
14 million ($20 million) worth of jewels were stolen in April 2015. Were
currently deep in the legal process to find out what we can and cant include
in the film, said managing director of Metrodome Jezz Vernon. Its an
incredible story and the aim is to make the raid contextual in the broader
landscape of Londons criminal history, he added. We look forward to
working with Metrodome on the tale of one of the biggest robberies in
Britain ever, said producers Harris and Jacques.

Filming has wrapped for

Ubisoft Motion Pictures
upcoming Assassins Creed
movie. The head of content
confirmed that the last shot
was taken on January 15th.
Michael Fassbender who
plays Callum Lynch, the main
character, admitted he hadnt
played any Assassins Creed
game before landing the role.
Back in December, in order to
get an idea of the physicality
of the character he finally
played a game. Assassins Creed
hits theaters on December 21,
starring Fassbender, Marion
Cotillard, and Ariane Labed,
the brand new story fixed
with entirely new characters
will be set in 15th century
Spain, and is part of the same
universe as the games. Like the
game series, modern day is a
key element in the movie.

After the tragic passing of Alan Rickman, Harry

Potter Author J.K. Rowling has revealed that she
shared a secret with the actor about his character,
Severus Snape, years before it was revealed in the
books. Back in 2011, Rickman said that Rowling
offered him crucial insight into the wizards
character, which informed his portrayal of Snape
in the eight-part film saga. It remained a mystery,
until now. In response to a fan on Twitter, Rowling
shared the secret. She tweeted, I told Alan what
lies behind the word always. Potter fans will
recall that Snapes utterance of the word always
during Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part
2 was a pivotal moment in the characters story
arc, revealing that his love for Harrys mother, Lily,
was so powerful it eclipsed the resentment he
harbored toward Harry and his father. Rickman
died while battling cancer at the age of 69.

Improving your
People Skills at Work

READ. JANUARY, 24 - JANUARY, 30, 2016

eople skills cannot be

easily measured, but they
are necessary for success in
many positions. Those are
the skills needed to communicate
and interact with others
individually or within groups. You
can be the smartest employee at
your company, but if you dont
know how to handle or deal with
your colleagues, you wont be able
to advance your career. Those who
have strong emotional intelligence
are the ones who are often
nominated for corporate leadership
positions. The good news is that
you dont have to be born with the
right people skills, you can actually
improve them. Akhtaboot will show
you how.

Connect with Others

Like it or not, personal

relationships run the world.
Connecting with others has
nothing to do with your industry
or interests. It is all about investing
some of your time in building

meaningful relationships and

nurturing existing ones. From
being a good listener to offering a
helping hand without expecting
anything in return, those are
some of the best ways to connect
to others. You want to make your
colleagues feel heard and that you
can relate to them.

Dont Take Yourself

Too Seriously

Work is serious but that doesnt

mean you have to take yourself
too seriously to the point that you
start losing connection with others.
Many employees believe humor has
no place in the workplace. In fact,
some well-timed, light humor can
enhance the moral of your team
and make it easier for others to be
around you and to connect to you.
The more approachable you are, the
more authentic and honest people
will be around you.

Build Trust

Trust is a basic building block

in any relationship. If you want
to strengthen your relationship
with your colleagues, you need
to maintain integrity at all times.
Integrity is all about keeping your
promises and telling the truth no
matter how difficult the situation
might be.

Own up to your
Mistakes

Those who fail to take responsibility

for their own actions often make
for poor team players. By owning
up to your mistakes you will
position yourself as a genuine
professional who doesnt shy away
from confrontation or difficult
conversations. This kind of
knowledge breeds self-awareness,
a main factor of emotional
intelligence and an important
trait that employers look for in

candidates. Mistakes allow you

to learn and grow. Its simply the
process of eliminating ways that
wont work in order to come closer
to the ways that will.

Know your Strengths

and Weaknesses

It is only human to try to cover our

flaws, but it is important for us to
recognize our imperfections while
looking for ways to overcome them
to advance in work and life. If you
want to be self-aware, you need to
acknowledge both your strengths
and weaknesses. Keep in mind that
having weaknesses is only human.
This kind of knowledge will enhance
your emotional intelligence. You
also need to identify your strengths
and look for ways to integrate them
into your position and to help
others. Keep in mind that we tend
to feel more confident when were
doing something were good at.

Plunkett
replaces Finn

teve Finn has sustained an injury with side strain and

will therefore miss the rest of Englands tour of South
Africa. Liam Plunkett came in as a replacement for
Finn, who missed the fourth and final Test at Centurion, and all of the limited-overs internationals which follow
it. Finn is expected to be fit again for the ICC World T20 in
March, but as for now he will begin his rehabilitation. Plunkett, who will replace Finn in both squads, impressed in the
T20s against Pakistan and was unfortunate to lose his spot.
I was disappointed not to be in the squad in the first place,
but I came back here with the Lions determined to play to my
best and show Im still ready if they need me. said Plunkett.

Massa hopeful of 2016

avid Haye believes

that he is the fastest
and hardest-hitting
heavyweight in the
world after he managed to
knock out Mark de Mori in the
first round of his comeback
fight. The 35-year-old made
a return at the O2 last week
after spending three-and-ahalf years without boxing. It
was an emphatic return for
the former WBA world champion as he ruthlessly knocked
out the Australian in just over
two minutes. I dont believe
any heavyweight in the world
could have taken the combination Mark de Mori took and
stayed on their feet. I believe
Im the fastest heavyweight
on the planet and the hardest
hitting, he said. It was amazing. Exactly what I needed.
I wanted to come back and
show that Im not a thing of
the past.

elipe Massa
believes that
Williams can
successfully win
a race in the 2016 season.
This comes after the team
has looked to build on
their resurgence in the last
two seasons. Williams have
managed to win just one
race in the past 11 years,
with their last title coming
in 1997. Nevertheless, the
team yielded 13 podium
finishes and Massa is
hoping for even better this
year. When Massa was
asked if he could win in
2016, he replied: I think
so, that is what we are
working for. We are really
near, we were on the podium a few times last year
and maybe more times the
year before in 2014 and
we really hope we can get
back to the victories, get
back to a car that is really
competitive to fight for the
victory. I really hope it can
be possible.

Marler extends contract

oe Marler has signed an extended contract with Aviva Premiership side Harlequins. The 25-year-old England prop has been a regular member of Quins
first-team squad ever since his debut back in 2009. Marler managed to secure
his first senior cap for the team only one year later, where he went on to represent his country on 37 occasions. He also played in the Rugby World Cup squad
last year. After a tough 2014/15 season, both personally and as a team, I took
some time to think about my future. It quickly dawned on me that this is exactly
where I want to be. Being part of a team is not just about winning.

even if youre just talking things over
with friends or family. Your vulnerable side will be showing, and most
people will warm up to you even
more because of it. The weekend
will be bright and wonderful.

Your logic will be unassailable, but you still

might lose an argument or two to
the fast-talkers in your crowd. Midweek, your energy will be directed
outward toward other people, and
youll find that organizing groups
gives you a great deal of satisfaction.

Your brainpower will

be multiplied many
times, but dont expect to finish any
projects up quite yet. Most of the
week will be extremely busy, and
you might find yourself starting
(or taking on) more work than you
know what to do with.

Some strange little detail will try to trip you

up, but if youre watchful youll see it
coming in time to avoid it. Youll be
full of energy for most of the week,
and your intuitions will be strong
and reliable. Try to let other people
choose their own paths.

Dont rely on anyone

else, everything will be
completely up to you, and others
will likely be too busy to help anyway. You might feel mismatched
or out of sync, but a little flexibility
will help you and your partners
make it through the rough patch.

Most people around

you will be flighty and
hard to keep up with, but if you lead
by example you might pull them
back on track. Youll find yourself
going through an intensely social
phase that will involve peaks and
valleys of emotional energy.

A chance encounter
should yield some
intense conversation. Life around
the house will be more difficult than
usual; make sure you deal with every
situation as it arises so you dont
have to work them all out at once.
Keep your cool and youll be fine.

The week will be filled

with good fun and
creative activities. One big mystery
or several small puzzles will consume most of your attention, but
youll find interesting and inventive
solutions. Take time to help friends
or the community on the weekend.
