MODULE TITLE: Entrepreneurship
Task 2: Individual Report
Individual Report (70% of marks)

A successful small business requires creativity and innovation; awareness of the


business environment including opportunities and threats; should demonstrate
entrepreneurial characteristics, behaviours and motivations; appreciate their role in
wider economic and social development.
Discuss and critically analyse this statement through theory and where appropriate
illustrate with real world practice based examples of entrepreneurship and
entrepreneurial behaviour.

Your report should offer explanation, description and critical analysis.


To help you structure your work, have a look at the assessment criteria.
Use a variety of sources to gather your information/data.
Always reference your work using the Harvard referencing system information
relating to referencing is available in the library and on the skills for learning web
pages.

This is an academic report: you are therefore expected to engage with appropriate
literature to build and substantiate your arguments and are required to fully reference all
materials used. Your report should take into account issues around the small business
environment, enterprise and entrepreneurship. You should critically review literature on
enterprise, entrepreneurship, business creation and/or innovation. In addition, you
should compare your findings with the theory presented during the lectures. Finally, it is

important to provide your own reflection and own interpretation of your findings.
Guidance length of report is 3000 words.
MARKING SCHEME FOR INDIVIDUAL REPORT (mark in brackets)
The content of the individual report should demonstrate:

The importance of the business environment as it affects small businesses (15)


An evaluation of small business opportunities and threats (10)
A critical evaluation of entrepreneurial characteristics, behaviour and motivation (25)
The relevance of creativity and innovation to the entrepreneurship process and the
development of business opportunities (25)
An evaluation of the contribution of entrepreneurs/small businesses to economic and
social development (25)

Assessment Criteria for Individual Report:


Distinction 70% +
In considering the work of candidates the following aspects may illustrate the work as suitable
for a distinction grade at masters level.

Core theory has been included and augmented by contemporary and related
works and integrated in a critical manner
Technical application of theory is consistently strong throughout with no
significant errors evident
Key points relating to the entrepreneurial situation are included and augmented
with additional insight demonstrated and evaluated in the light of a range of
appropriate theory
Points are critically supported by practice based evidence or from theory
The work directly, clearly and consistently addresses the requirements of the
assessment with a high degree of insight
The work is progressively structured with arguments logically arranged and key
themes developed and explored

Merit 60 69%
In considering the work of candidates the following aspects may illustrate the work as suitable
for a merit grade at masters level.

Core theory has been included and augmented by contemporary and related
works and integrated in a critical manner
Technical application of theory is consistently strong throughout

Key points relating to the entrepreneurial situation are included and evaluated in
the light of a range of appropriate theory
Points are consistently and strongly supported by evidence or from theory

Pass 40% 59%

In considering the work of candidates, one or more of the following issues if substantive
may determine that the work is below the standard expected at masters level

Theoretical content is limited or absent


There is a significant number of technical errors
Key points relating to the entrepreneurial situation will be omitted
Analysis will lack support by evidence from practise or from theory
The work will fail to address the main requirements of the question
The work has some degree of progressive structure to it with arguments that are
not always logically arranged
