In 1949 76 and 82 Squadrons returned to their hornland from Japan, but 77 Squadron remained, and early
in July 1950 moved to Korca uwherewar had braken out
between North and South, being the f u s t non-American
Unitcd Nations unit to go inlo ac~ion. Operariag with
rhc U.S. 5th Air h r c e as part of the 35th FighterBomber Wing, thc squadron Rcw 3,800 sorties, losing
twelvt: pilots, including the commanding officer, W.W.11
vrreran Wg.-Cdr. L. T. Spence, D.F.C., all ro enemy
action, huforc rc-equipping with Gloster Meteor 8s in
April 1951. I n Aus~raIin84 and 86 Squadrons were also
cquippcd with Mustangs. and the aircraft rcmained in
scrvicc, though mainly with rcscrvc units, until 1950.
R e a l Cmadian Air Force
Having opcmtcd Mustangs with 442 Squadron d w h g
the war, not surprisingly Cnnada showed interest in this
aircraft, and soon aftcr tbc end of thc war 100 P-SIDs
were acquired, rhcst: serving with h r h regular and auxiliary units, incIuding 410,419, 415,4I6and 417 Squadrons
until 1956.
Saurh Ajrican Air Force
Anothur Commonwealth squadron also operated in
Korca with Mustangs, this being 2 (Flying Cheetah)
Squadron. S.A.A.F.; rhis unit arrivcd in Nwcmbcr 1950,
having pickrd up thcir Mustangs from the U.S.A.F. en
route in Japan, joining the 18th Fighter-Bomber Wing,
U.S.A.F..The squadron was suppIied with 95 F-5IDs
(as the n~rcraft had been rc-designated) during their sul'
in Korca, lasing 74 i n combat, two being shot down by
MiG 15s. T h e South African Mustangs took an active
-par1 in ground artack missions until January 1953, when
thcy werc rcplaccd by F-86 Sabres.
Royal New Zedand Air Force
Another air force in the Pacihc arm to receive Mustangs w a s th-t R.N.Z.A.F.,30 P:SlDs.bcing supplied in
1945. 131tst' did not go into service st once, being stored
for somc months, but u'crc later issucd to Nos. 1, 2, 3
and 4 Squadrons, remaining on strength until 1951,
although it is d k c I y that any of these units had more
than six aircraft on strength at any one time.

lull wing had been formed, and this then twk prt in
