MEC 206 Kinematic of Machinery- MECH-A
TUTORIAL 1
PART-A
1. How many inversions are possible from a four-bar kinematic chain? Name them based on
their input-output motions.
2. What are the three conditions to obtain a four-bar crank rocker mechanism?
3. State at least one similarity and on e difference between a Helical pair and cylindrical pair.
4. Define a kinematic chain and write the relation between the number of pairs and links.
5. Differentiate between closed pair and unclosed pair in kinematic mechanism.
6. State any four types of kinematic pairs according to the types of relative motion between
them.
7. What is a machine? Give two examples; differentiate between a machine and a structure.
8. What is the difference between kinematic chain and mechanism
9. Explain Grublers criterion for determining degree of freedom for mechanism
10. Define kinematic pair and illustrate any two types of constrained pair.
11. Enumerate the difference between a machine and a structure
12. List out the inversions of a double slider crank chain
13. State the Kutzbach criterion.
14. What is an inversion?
15. Define Kinematic pair.
16. What do you mean by inversion of a mechanism?
17. What is Grashoffs law for a four bar linkage?
18. Define kinematics chain.
19. Define DOF of a mechanism
20. Illustrate completely constrained motion and incompletely constrained motion
21. Distinguish between kinematics pair and kinematics chain.
22. Distinguish normal componb hy6hhent of acceleration and tangential component of
acceleration.
23. What type of link will have only centripetal component of acceleration and what types of link
will have only linear acceleration?
24. Figure shows some four link mechanisms in which the figures indicate the dimensions in
standard units of length. Indicate type of each mechanism whether crank-rocker or doublerocker.

PART-B
25. Sketch and explain any two inversions of single slider crank chain.

26. Sketch and explain any two inversions of double slider crank chain.
27. Sketch and explain any two inversions of four bar chain.
28. In the drag-link mechanism shown, link 2 is turning CW at the rate of
130 rpm. Construct the
Velocity and acceleration polygons and compute the following: aE5, aF6, and
the angular acceleration of link 5.
AB = 4.57
cm
BC = 9.5
cm
CD = 9.75
cm
AD = 11.4
cm
AE = 11.0

29. In the mechanism, as shown in Fig. 8.12, the crank OA rotates at 20 r.p.m. anticlockwise and
gives motion to the sliding blocks B and D. The dimensions of the various links are OA =
300 mm; AB = 1200 mm; BC = 450 mm and CD = 450 mm. For the given configuration,
determine: 1. velocities of sliding at B and D, 2. Angular velocity of CD, 3. linear
acceleration of D, and 4. angular acceleration of CD.

30.

31. In the Mechanism shown in below, link 4 is moving to the left at the rate of 0.18 m/s (Constant).
Determine the velocity and acceleration of point A3. Link Length: AB = 0.127 m and BC = 0.127
