Production Timeline
This is a general guideline based on past years of El Inde. You can
change it as you see fit. Keep in mind that the Epitaph uses the produc-
tion lab as well so you’ll need to make sure your production times don’t
conflict with them.
Day One
• Decide what stories are going on what pages. Discuss with photo editor, news editor
and copy chief.
• Draw up dummies of the pages to help move layout along quickly.
• Get through as much of the layout as you can on the first day. If you can’t finish it
don’t worry!
• If you finish layout, print out a copy of each page and leave them for the editors to
come in and look over.
Day Two
• Finish up layout and print out copies if you haven’t already.
• Have a Spanish editor come in to clean up the Spanish articles and translate headlines
and/or cutlines.
• If possible have a photographer or photo editor come in to process any extra photog-
raphers you might need or to fill in any missing cutlines.
• If you left a copy of the pages for the editors the night before, input any changes and
print out new copies of each page. Leave two copies of the paper for the editors to
look over.
Day Three
• This day is always pretty hectic.
• Make sure there are editors willing to stay until the paper is ready to go out.
• The editors will mark changes that need to be made in red. One of the designers will
make the changes and highlight the editor’s marks to show they have been changed.
The designer will then print out a new copy of that page, staple it to the top and give
it to a new editor to look over.
• Once the editors give the go-ahead the design chief sends the paper to the printer!

Modular Design
The easiest and best looking way to design the paper is using “modular design.”
This means you look at all the elements of an article in boxes or rectangles. This
makes it easier to plan the paper and to rearrange items if issues arise. This
method also makes it easier for the reader’s eyes to move through the paper. Below
is an example of modular design.

design principle it will make things much easier.

Flag/Folios
The master pages on the server will come with the flag and folios already at-
tached so you shouldn’t have to worry too much about these. Just remember
to change the date on each page so that it is correct.
Body Text
The body text used for El Inde is Times New Roman size 9.5. The initial kern-
ing is set at +1 but it can be set down to -2 if need be. The style sheet is called
“body text,” except for the first paragraph which is called “first graf” or “first
paragraph.” The first paragraph in an article never has an indent.
lines/rules
We put lines between articles at El Independiente. There is one pica of space
between articles horizontally and two pica of space vertically
Headlines
• Font: Helvetica Nueue Black Condensed
• The general rule of thumb is the higher a story is on the page, the bigger the head-
line it gets. For example the lead story on a page might get a 40 pt. headline
whereas an article at the bottom might have a 28 - 30 pt. headline.
• Sample headlines can be found in the library.
• Headlines are in “Up Style.” This means every word over three letters in a head-
line is capitalized.
• Generally, the more columns a story has, the less lines the headline gets. For ex-
ample, a one column story would have a headline in about three lines. A five
column story would have a headline in one line.
• Try to avoid “butting heads” (having two headlines adjacent to eachother that
collide or run into one another.
Bylines
• Font: Helvetica Nueue Bold Condensed size 9.5
• There is a style sheet for bylines called “byline”
• For Spanish articles the byline should read “Por Reporter’s Name” instead of “By
Reporter’s Name.”
• Spanish articles will also have a “Traducido por” byline for the translator.
• Leave one line of space between the byline and the first graf.
Jumps
• Page 1 jumps to Page 6
• The jump lines can be found in the library.
• The “jump to” goes at the bottom of the column on the furthest right.
• The “jump from” goes at the top of the column on the furthest left.
• The jumped story on page 6 needs to have another headline.
• To link the article from page 1 to page 6:
- Place the article on page 1
- Set up a text box on page 6
- Click the text box tool button and hold down until a menu appears
- Click the button that looks like a link
- Click on the text box you created on page 6. Now you have a jump!

Decks
Decks are used to make an article look better or to supplement the headline and
give the reader more information.
• The 1 column deck is in three lines and the 3 column deck is in one line.
• There are a 16 pt. deck and an 18 pt. deck in the style sheets.
• Decks can either be directly below the main headline or in the article directly
before the byline.

General
• Always make sure there is dominant art on the page. The lead story on the page
should have the biggest photo and the rest of the stories have smaller art so the
reader’s eye can move down the page.
• Style sheets for photo byline and cutline are titled “Photo Byline” and “Cutline”
• Runaround around the photo and the cutline box should be about 6 pts.

info Boxes
• Set the box color to 10% black.
• Use the “If You Go” style sheets.
• Make sure the reporters know what options they have for info boxes
(attached is an info sheet about different sidebars/infographics).
Pull Quotes
• You can find a sample pull quote in the library.
• Pull quotes don’t necessarily need to be direct quotes, they can just be
information from the story.
• Use them to break up grey space in the paper and to make an article look
more interesting.
inside Box
On the front page there is an “Inside” box that refers the readers to interesting arti-
cles in the paper. The box can be found in the library and there are style sheets for
the text in the box, but there are a few tips to remember:
Que Pasa
• The Community Events Page or “Que Pasa” is on page 8.
• There are style sheets for the event listings. These are “Event Date,” “Event
Hed” and “Event Text.”
• The Que Pasa page has event listings in both English and Spanish.
• Put the byline for the reporter in English and below that the “Traducido por”
byline.
• Leave one line of space between each listing.
• This page is generally layed out with a listing of all the events in English
followed by all the events in Spanish.
