RESEARCH

1.0 M Sc. Project, UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM (2001)

Title of Project : Evaluating Dispatching Rules In A Dynamics Scheduling.

Abstract
The research work described a combination of a modeling method and a development of
discrete event simulation model of manufacturing cell. The objectives of this work are to
examine the impact of existing dispatching rules under the dynamic situation of the
manufacturing cell. The outcome of this work helps a scheduler to understand the usage
of appropriate dispatching rules to handle the occurrences of unavoidable circumstances
in the manufacturing cell.

Title of Project : Development of On-Line Mechanical Engineering Design And
Manufacturing Process.

Abstract
The research works try to develop an on line system (automated system) of design,
analysis and manufacturing (CAD/CAE/CAM/) of mechanical engineering product. This
can be achieved through develop the process chain required for paperless
CAD/CAE/CAM, from initial design product to manufacturing of end products by
establish on-line connection of CAD/CAM system. The outcome of the research is to
evaluate the finish product between on-line machining with conventional G-code
processing.

4.0 INJECTION MOLDING -: STG- IRDC-UiTM, (JUL 2004 JUN

2005)
Title of Project : Optimization The Process Control In Thermoplastic Injection Molding
Using Design Of Experiment (Doe) Method: Side Mirror.

Abstract
The manufacturing process of an injection moulded thermoplastic car side mirror was
used as an industrial case study (SMIs, Malaysia) to optimise the process control with
existing mould design, machine parameters and Akulon K223-HGM24 as a feedstock.
The study used Design of Experiment (DOE) through Taguchis method, to eliminate
sink mark on the surface of the product. DOE was design to consider the interaction in
the process parameter. Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) numerical analysis
simulations have been carried out as DOEs process parameters experiment. In order to
determine optimal process parameters, simulation experiments have been perform for
various process conditions with DOE scheduling. First, a set of process parameters was
select and preliminary simulations experiment was conduct with an L 16 orthogonal array
to screen the significant factors, check the validity of data fitting model and predict an
improved process conditions to eliminate sink mark. Second, using the selected control
factor, a principal simulation experiments was conduct to predict an optimal process
conditions that solve the quality problem. Finally, the predicted process condition was
tested on 450 ton injection moulding machine to confirm prediction. The result shows
that Taguchi Method is very suitable to solve the quality problem occurring the injectionmoulded thermoplastic parts.

5.0 Reverse Engineering : STG IRDC-UiTM,

Title of Project : Designing And Machining CNG/DI Engine Valve Using

Reverse Engineering Method.
Abstract: The overall aim of the project was to design and machining CNG/DI engine
valve using reverse engineering method. The processes start from scanning the engine
valve using non contact 3D digitizer -Konica Minolta VIVID 910. Further, the digitized
data than transferred to CAD software to develop the cad model. Using CATIA software
the model were integrated to CAD/Cam application and finally transfer to CNC machine
to fabricating the CNG/DI engine valve.

Abstract: The overall aim of the project was to evaluate the machinability of hardened

assess the feasibility of microscale mechanical milling for the production of micro
moulds and dies.

7.0 Micromachining- Finite Element Analysis: RIF- UiTM

(July 2012 July 2014) RM32,000.00
Title of Project: Investigate chip formation, growth and material deformation
mechanism in micromachining AISI D2.
Abstract : Mechanical micromachining is becoming an important microfabrication
technology due to the increasing demand for miniaturised products. This has mainly been
driven by the need for: (a) greater reduction in (component/assembly) size and weight;
(b) better efficiency in energy consumption; and (c) increased portability in commercial
and non-commercial applications. Miniaturized parts or features of a few millimetres to
micrometer in dimension are gaining ground in such field as medical, transportation,
environmental, communication, microfluidic and etc.
In this study, the chip formation and material deformation mechanism in micromachining
will be investigated using finite element analysis (FEA -ABAQUS). The arbitrary
LagrangianEulerian (ALE) method will be used to further investigate the chip formation
mechanism of AISI D2, under three criteria such as a/r < 1, a/r >1 and a/r = 1. This
leading to examine the chip growth in micromachining. This study was aimed to
determining the effect of tool edge radius on the contact phenomenon in the

micromachining of hardened steel (AISI D2) through ALE-FE modelling. The core
findings were in two major aspects:
(i) contact length, stickslide behaviour and contact force and
(ii) effect of cutting edge radius on contact length and material deformation.

8.0 Microcutting edge radius characterization KPT/FRGS

(April 2013 March 2015) RM106,000.00
Title of Project: Microcutting edge radius characterization.
Mechanical micromachining is next generation of precision material removal at the micro
scale level due to the increase in miniaturisation of commercial products. It is very
competitive in microfabrication technology compare to other contact or non contact
micromachining. The chip formation during cutting process in micromachining is a
complicated material deformation and removing process. The objective of this proposed
research work is to characterize the effect of cutting edge radius in micromachining and
to develop model process performance via model algorithm. The effect of increased wear
on tool life, surface roughness, and burr formation also will be analysed. The use of
statistical analysis will facilitate the identification of key process variables and establish
the best machining process performances. Thus this work will be undertaken to develop
process performance model and micromachinability of cold work tool steel which are
categorised into Part 1 and Part 2. In Part 1, development of Finite Element model will
take place in order to study the cutting edge radius size effect, chip deformation etc. The
chip formation will be simulated via adaptive meshing and plastic flow of workpiece
material. This will follow in Part 2, where the experimental work will be take place. The
result output of this research will improve the process capability (tool life, productivity,
accuracy etc.) for widespread industrial application and particularly for micro machining
of hardened steels and difficult to cut materials such as titanium/nickel alloys, carbon
fiber reinforce polymer-CFRP etc. The applications of this technology extend miniature
parts/product anywhere from electronics to micro scale medical implants. Its flexibility in
terms of components size, geometric shape, as well as the ability of machining intricate
3D features for a variety of both non-metallic and metallic materials.
This study embarks on the following objectives:
1) To investigate influence of cutting edge radius in micromachining via numerical
analysis and experiments.
2) To assess contact phenomena in micromachining towards chip formation.
3) To increase process performance and identify microtool wear mechanisms.
