MAZELTOV, FROM THE

ZIONIST MEDIA
Anti-Israel activist elected NUS president
BY JACK

MENDEL
THE NATIONAL Union of Students has
elected as president a woman who has attacked the Zionist-led media and sympathised with the armed struggle
against Israel.
Malia Bouattia [pictured, right], who has
been the unions black students officer since
2014, was elected to the top job after a single
round of voting yesterday, despite concerns
from Jewish students over her remarks.
Previous comments include branding Birm-

ingham University a Zionist outpost in British

higher education. She has also said that Prevent, the governments anti-radicalisation policy, is dictated by all manner of Zionists and
criticised mainstream Zionist-led media outlets during an event at which she appeared to
sympathise with Hamas terror attacks.
Bouattia, 28, who says she wants to make
the NUS more democratic, was elected with
371 votes to incumbent president Megan
Dunns 328 her nearest competitor.
The Union of Jewish Students reacted cautiously. A spokesperson said: There will be
many Jewish students who have not been satisfied with Malias response so far to concerns

raised over the last few weeks. Now, after

the result of the election, these questions
still need to be answered. We hope she
shows her commitment to opposing antiSemitism and other forms of racism.
Board of Deputies President Jonathan
Arkush said: We are deeply concerned
by the failure of Malia Bouattia to satisfactorily clarify past remarks and associations. There can be no excuse for
associating with groups who have a
history of anti-Semitism, equivocating
on terrorism or considering Jewish

LONDON DECIDES: COUNTDOWN TO 5 MAY

ZAC: SADIQ KHAN IS NOT BELIEVABLE

ZAC GOLDSMITH has dismissed his
Labour rival as not being a believable
candidate after changing his position on
sanctions towards Israel, writes Justin
Cohen.
The Tory candidate for London mayor
launched one of his strongest attacks on
Sadiq Khan during an interview with Jewish News as he wound his way through
north London on a campaign day organised by Conservative Friends of Israel.
Khan, who lobbied for sanctions around
the time of Operation Cast Lead in 2009,
has insisted in recent weeks that the
boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS)
campaign will not help achieve peace and
urged the world not to turn its face
against the Jewish state drawing fire
online from anti-Israel activists.
I dont think Sadiq Khan is a believable

candidate because I sense he speaks with

one message to one audience and
another to another, Goldsmith claimed.
The Richmond Park MP added: I
value consistency and principles in politics. I hope people viewing my record will
see I dont speak with a forked tongue, I
do what I say and, when I make promises,
I keep them.
Goldsmith stopped off in Stanmore,
Edgware and Golders Green, tucking into
rugelach and bagels and being presented
with a box of matzah on the way, before a
rally at the new Work Avenue in Finchley,
a return to Golders Green to visit Hatzola
and to meet a group of rabbis.
Despite the stories of anti-Semitism
plaguing Labour, Goldsmith insisted he
was not taking Jewish voters for granted.
You never think you have a community

sewn up and I think any candidate who

thinks they do is taking a huge gamble
and also being disrespectful... but Im getting a very good reception in the Jewish
community.
He used the visit to pledge 130,000 for
four more neighbourhood police officers
for Golders Green and Finchley Church
End if elected, pledging to tackle the
issues causing massive anxiety including the rise in anti-Semitism and the feeling that London is less safe than it was.
Goldsmith, who has himself suffered
anti-Semitism online because of his name
and has outlined plans for an army of volunteers to work with police to tackle
online extremism, said: My concern is its
not a big jump from aggression online to
aggression on the streets. If were complacent on the first, well end up with

physical aggression.
Goldsmith has claimed that Khan has
provided cover for extremists by sharing
a platform with those with extremist views
in the past, resulting in former shadow
minister Yvette Cooper claiming Goldsmiths campaign was moving from subtle dog whistles to racist screams.
Hitting back, Goldsmith said: My campaign has been overwhelmingly positive
but it is absurd to pretend it isnt legitimate to ask questions about Sadiq Khans
links, of which there are many, many,
many. To try to close down those questions by shouting Islamophobia is not only
wrong, its completely irresponsible.
He also spoke of his hopes of leading
a trade delegation to Israel should he
reach City Hall, praising Boris Johnson for
building on the natural relationship.

Khan backs Labour rule change to tackle anti-Semites

SADIQ KHAN has backed proposals for a change in Labours
rules that would make it easier
to permanently kick anti-Semites out of the party.
The front-runner in the race
for London mayor (pictured),
who has spoken of incidents
of hatred among party members as a badge of shame,
said he absolutely supported
the plans put forward by the

Jewish Labour Movement.

During a visit to Jewish Cares
headquarters in Golders Green
with GLA candidate Andrew
Dismore, he said: I know what
its like to be a victim of hate
crime. The idea that we as the
Labour Party would have a hierarchy of racism, would not understand the importance of
addressing this, beggars belief.
Ive been quite plain about

my disappointment in the
Labour leadership. Its not simply trying to court your vote
I find it unacceptable that people in London of Jewish faith
think the Labour Party is not for
them because theyre Jewish.
He urged voters to look at
the experience of each of us,
the values, the vision including
efforts at tackling anti-Semitism
as communities minister.

Asked what could be done to

address anti-Semitic attitudes
among parts of the Muslim
community that were highlighted by a recent ICM poll, the
Tooting MP said: In the first
major speech I gave during this
campaign, I said most British
Muslims had come into contact
with somebody who have these
sorts of views who think 9/11
was a conspiracy. Ive been clear

from day one that we need to

tackle these views.
Despite lobbying for sanctions against Israel around Operation Cast Lead, Khan said:
Ive never been in favour of
boycotts. People have attributed words to me. Im going to
be the most pro-business mayor
weve ever had; Im going to be
an inclusive mayor... someone
who unites rather than divides.

21 injured in Jerusalem bus attack

THIRTEEN PEOPLE were hospitalised and
one man was left fighting for his life on Monday after a bus bomb in Jerusalem provided
an eerie echo of the Second Intifada.
A Jerusalem Police spokesperson said:
Based on an investigation by demolitions
experts, it appears that a bomb went off in
the back of the bus, which caused injuries to
passengers and the bus to catch fire.
Security officials were initially reluctant
to confirm that the explosion, which injured
at least 21 people, was an act of hatred
before investigations were complete, but
Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat and Israeli
President Reuven Rivlin both said it was a
terrorist attack.
It is clear to us all that our struggle
against terrorism will never stop, said
Rivlin, after the blast in Talpiot, in southwest Jerusalem. We will chase down and
reach all those who bid us harm until we
achieve quiet.
Following what analysts called a serious
escalation in attacks, Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu promised that the
perpetrators would be brought to justice,
and increased security across the city.
Police are investigating whether the critically injured man planted the device
on the number 12 bus, which set fire to a
neighbouring bus and nearby car. A judges
gagging order prohibits the media from
revealing his identity.
Joint Arab List leader Ayman Odeh
utterly condemned the attack but Hamas,
which did not claim responsibility, said
it was a natural response to the crimes of
occupation.

Soldiers manslaughter charge

AN ISRAELI military court
has charged a soldier with
manslaughter over the fatal
shooting of a wounded Palestinian attacker in the West
Bank, an incident caught on
tape that deeply divided the
nation.
The soldier, a medic whose
name was not released under
a gag order, has also been
charged with inappropriate

military conduct.
The shooting took place last
month in Hebron, a city that has
been a focal point of a sevenmonth wave of Israeli-Palestinian violence. Initially, the
military said two Palestinians
stabbed and wounded a soldier
before troops killed the pair.
A video showed the soldier
raise his rifle and shoot the injured attacker in the head.

UN rewriting Temple Mount history

ISRAEL HAS accused the UN of
rewriting history after last
weeks UNESCO resolution on
Jerusalem failed to mention
Jewish ties to Temple Mount.
Benjamin Netanyahu reacted
angrily to the absurd decision
passed at last Fridays board
meeting of the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in Paris.
Following a motion submit-

The bus on fire and the wreckage

Magen David Adom said 15 people

were wounded in the attack, two seriously, with the injured taken to Shaare
Zedek and Hadassah Ein Kerem, the
capitals two medical centres.
A spokesman for Shaare Zedek,
where the critically injured man in being
treated, said his condition was unstable
and life-threatening.
In its analysis, London-based think tank
BICOM said: This is a serious escalation in
severity of attacks that Israel has experienced within the wave of terror of the last
six months.
It added: More than the injuries caused,

ted by Arab member states,

including Egypt and Lebanon,
Netanyahu decried the omission of Jewish links to the site,
which is considered the third
holiest in Islam.
Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid
said: The decision by UNESCO feeds incitement and so
contributes to the wave of terrorism. It is a stain on the
United Nations.

Push to outlaw all Hezbollah wings

this touches on psychological scars carried
by Jerusalemites to the days of the Second
Intifada, when suicide bus bombings were
prevalent. Only time will now tell if this was
just an aberration or new phase in the current wave of terror.

A CAMPAIGN has been

launched to have every branch
of Hezbollah proscribed as a
terrorist organisation, not just
its military wing.
The Zionist Federations renewed attempt to have the
Shiite group banned in its entirety follows a move by Sunni
Muslim states to proscribe the
group, which is supported by

Iran. The UK campaign, led by

a new ZF project called the Israel-Britain Alliance (IBA), has
the support of both Christian
and Jewish groups, whose
members are being encouraged to write to Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond.
The IBA said events in Syria,
where Hezbollah is fighting,
showed its barbarity.

SPECIAL REPORT: ISRAELS UNEMPLOYED STRICTLY-ORTHODOX

CAN WORK, WILL WORK

Half of Israels strictly-Orthodox men are unemployed. Stephen
Oryszczuk visits a unique project in the Galil thats giving the
countrys Charedim a crucial first step on the career ladder

Stark facts: Male employment among the strictly-Orthodox has nosedived

sraels strictly Orthodox are work-shy. They dont want

a career. They dont want to participate. Theyd rather
sponge off the state. I hear it all the time, says a weary
Tzvika Shreiber from Kemach, a non-profit organisation, addressing a room full of sceptical Jews from the UK. Well, I
come from the Charedi sector myself, and Im telling you: its
not true. We want to do it. The question is how.
With the support of private benefactors in London and elsewhere, Shreiber tells a UJIA delegation how Kemach helps get
strictly Orthodox men into employment using training, job placements, mentoring and aptitude tests for those who dont know
what they want to do.
There are even counsellors and employment psychologists
thrown in for good measure. Money is given for vocational training
for Charedi men to learn a profession, but is only dispensed once
Kemach has evidence that the learner has already paid his tuition
fees. If they dont finish their studies, theyre liable to repay what
Kemach has dished out to-date.
Half of Israels Charedi men are unemployed. Shreiber agrees
that there is a problem, and that the curriculum should be wider
in Charedi schools, but says that learning per se isnt an issue.
Until the eighth grade theyre learning secular studies, then until
the age of 30, 40, 50, they dont stop learning They have the
habit to learn, to open a book every day, almost all day. They have
much more than 16 years of studies, just not secular studies.
Most Israeli politicians agree that increasing workforce participation is a national priority, which is one of the reasons UJIA also
helps fund Kemach, but Schreiber says that motivating Charedi
men with a nationalist appeal wont work.
If I say to him: We have to save the state of Israel, its not speaking to him. Theres too much distance between the Charedi
man and the state of Israel that he will care. Better to give them
the opportunity to maintain their families with dignity, he says.
Will it work? The scepticism in the room grows as, minutes later,
he warns that the Charedim want to preserve their way of
living. Of the 12,000 scholarships Kemach has supported
(most in Jerusalem, but many here in the Galil), there are some
success stories.
Paris-born father-of-four Yedidiel Elbaz is 30, but looks barely
18. He lives in Zfat, in the north, and is learning to be a doctor
at the citys medical school. Crucially, perhaps, both his own
parents are also professionals (his father a dentist, his mother a
speech therapist).
I always thought that as long as I can study the Torah while
my wife will work, I will continue, but from the moment it
will be necessary, I will work, he says. When I saw my
wifes difficulties, I decided to take my responsibilities, but
I did not want to enter a simple job with no future, so I

Just the job: Kemach participants heed career advice

looked for satisfactory and respectable work.

Following bad advice, he enrolled on an engineering course,
but knew he was looking for a job with the human touch, giving
help. He had been first aid trained and helped in the immediate
aftermath of terrorist attacks in Jerusalem, so later settled on
medicine, beginning a degree in molecular biology, while working
in a bank part-time to support his family as he learned. The
organisation provided income top-up, or subsistence payments,
he says. It would not have been possible without the financial
support of Kemach.
Kemach needs to succeed in Israels north, where 12 percent
of the population is Charedi, and where more strictly-Orthodox
Jews migrate every day owing to the high property prices in
Israels centre.
With an average of 7.7 children per family, their share of the
population will quickly grow. Prof. Dan Ben-David, founder of the
Shoresh Institute and one of Israels leading economists, advises
the government on policy vis-a-vis the Charedim, and knows that
two thirds of Charedi children live in poverty.
He also knows that education is key: despite the growth of
Charedi colleges, only one in eight Charedi men have academic
degrees (compared with a quarter of Charedi men in the US). Of
those who do have a job, only 2,000 have jobs in Israels all-important high-tech industry, where 300,000 Israelis work.
Its an existential threat, he argues, and impacts on security.
Todays children are tomorrows adults, and the fastest growing
segments of Israels population are receiving the worst core education. Most do not study the basic subjects, he says. Children
with a third-world education can only maintain a third-world economy, which cannot support a first-world defence.
Israel cant afford for the strictly-Orthodox not to work, he
says: Israel cant afford the welfare payments or the lack of
tax receipts. Newly-discovered off-shore gas in the Mediterranean eases the urgency, but if employment and productivity
rates among Charedim and Arab Israelis (who also have
large families) do not start to match those in the rest of Israeli
society, the government deficit will increase four-fold, according to the Finance Ministry.
With Israels elderly population set to increase by half over the
next two decades, the pressure is on, especially in the Galil, which
has a 45 percent child poverty rate and the lowest incomes of
any region, up to 70 percent below the national average.
The stakes are high, the risks are great, but so are the rewards.
While Kemach believes the true benefit to society will only be
the personal growth one finds in pursuing additional opportunities, Ben-David takes a slightly different view. When a large
share of future adults will not be able to maintain Israels
economy, he asks, who then will fund it?

Our campaign begins for

a Shabbat fit for a Queen
Shabbat on 11 June, the day of Her
Majestys official birthday.
The weekend will be the centrepiece
of national celebrations with a huge
street party for charities in the Mall and
a service of thanksgiving at St Pauls,
although synagogues unable to mark the
occasion that weekend are urged to do
so on another occasion around the
same time.
The Chief Rabbi
is urging the communities
under
his
auspices to host celebrations fit for a
Queen, with the Centre for Rabbinic Excellence poised to issue
a tips and ideas guide
for planning a patriotic
event and providing
funding to make the best
proposals come to fruition.
Details of the plans are
expected to be sent out after
Pesach and will enable the synagogues to order a free, personalised banner to mark the big
birthday.
The Chief Rabbi will also send a short
message to his communities to mark this
auspicious occasion, as well as a special
version of the Prayer for the Royal Family,
which will incorporate an additional

passage composed in honour of the

Queens birthday, a spokesman said.
In response to Jewish News campaign,
which is backed by the Board of
Deputies, Liberal Judaism has also
pledged to mark the occasion. Chief
executive Rabbi Danny Rich said: We

Students host Shoah exhibit

YOUNG EDUCATORS have launched an
exhibition about Britain and the Holocaust to
mark the end of their three-year terms as
Holocaust Educational Trust regional ambassadors, writes Jacqueline Gordon.
Dilemmas, Choices, Responses: Britain and
the Holocaust at the Wiener Library features
collections of photographs, posters, archive
documents and survivor stories, exploring the
UK publics reaction to Nazi atrocities.
Also displayed are personal declarations
from the young ambassadors explaining why
they were inspired to support HET.
Many have no Jewish heritage but were
moved by survivor testimonies and witnessing
the concentration camps for themselves.
Exhibitor William Pinder, 21, a student from
Anglia Ruskin University, said: We have all
worked so hard on this, it is incredible to
finally see it all come together. Its been a
team effort and we are massively proud.
Survivors were among the guests. Zigi

Shipper, 86, who was just 14 when he was

sent to Auschwitz, said: No one will ever
know what this means to me. I have spent
the last 30 years working with young people.
They are unbelievable. There are so few of
us left and there is little more we can do, so

it is so important that these young people

Supermarket sorry for Goebbels advert

The advert quotes Goebbels

A NEWSPAPER ADVERT featuring a quote from Joseph

Goebbels has been criticised for
trying to equate the Holocaust
with the migrant crisis, writes
Jacqueline Gordon.
The promotion by online
supermarket Etefy, which was
published in last Fridays Evening
Standard, shows a child grasping
barbed wire and the headline:
Millions of refugees have fled
fear and persecution last year.
Below it features an infamous

quote from the ex-Nazi propaganda chief, saying: The Jews

have deserved the catastrophe
that has now overtaken them.
Campaign Against Antisemitism has complained about
the advert to the Advertising
Standards Authority and the
Evening Standard.
A spokesman said: The inclusion of the quotation, without
context, explanation or rebuttal,
is inexcusable.
CAA claims it could lead to

some to believe Jews are even

to blame for the crisis. Karen Pollock, of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said the advert was
in very poor taste.
A spokesman for Etefy told
Jewish News: We have offered
an apology to everyone. In hindsight the advert was created and
placed wrongly.
The Evening Standard said:
Were hugely regretful that the
advert in question has caused
such offence.

Circumcision ruling case specific

THE COMMUNITY has been advised not to read too much into
a judges decision not to allow
a devout Muslim father to circumcise his son, after the childs
mother refused.
The man, an Algerian who
lives in England and is separated
from the mother, heard Mrs Justice Roberts refuse to make a
circumcision order on Monday,
after hearing arguments at a
family court in Exeter.
The father argued circumcision was in the childs best
interests but the mother
preferred to wait until such
time as the child has reached an
age where they are competent
to give consent to such a
procedure.
Milah UK founder Shimon

Cohen said the judgement did

not set a precedent as it was
case specific and could not
be seen as a general ruling on
brit milah (male circumcision).
It could have an effect on
the rare occasion when parents
disagree, but I cant say Ive
ever seen a case like this reach
court, he said. Were a similar
case to come before the courts
involving a Jewish parent, we
would support the argument
for brit milah, which is an essential covenant, but the integrity
of the child is paramount, as is
the rule of law.
Board of Deputies vice president Marie van der Zyl said:
There would not seem to be a
religious freedom aspect to this
case.

Relief for parents as Yavneh Primary

School gets green light for September
NERVY PARENTS breathed a
sigh of relief this week after
Yavneh College in Borehamwood said it would open a primary school in September.
It comes after the Department
for Education agreed to a funding agreement, which paved the
way for the opening with 60 reception places, easing fears of a
potential shortage of places at
Jewish schools in the capital.
A spokeswoman for the Partnership for Jewish Schools
(PaJeS), a division of the Jewish
Leadership Council, said: We
are delighted that this has come
to fruition and we wish the
headteacher and team every
success. We look forward to

over the coming years.
The Hertfordshire establishment announced an extra 30 secondary school places last month,
recognising the growth of the
Jewish population. The new primary school will eventually cater
for more than 400 pupils, which
MP Oliver Dowden said was
great news for the community.
Under rules governing free
schools, Yavneh can only guarantee 50 percent of places to
Jewish children, the other half
based on location. It is as yet unclear as to how many Jewish and
non-Jewish primary school children will start this September.

during a kiddush fight, writes

It is understood that two

Sephardic Synagogue in Melbourne had a row about alcohol
during kiddush at around midday on Saturday.
It is believed that after the
argument, one of the men left,
before returning with a knife

where he stabbed a third person, who had tried to intervene

in the dispute, in the abdomen.
Police sergeant Jack Russell
said the two men were known to
each other, adding: It was a single stab wound and the victim
suffered non-life threatening issues. A 46-year-old man has
been arrested and charged with
intentionally causing serious injury, recklessly causing serious injury and assault with a weapon.

Rio Olympics to host ceremony for

Israeli victims of Munich massacre
DETAILS OF the International
Olympic Committees plans to
honour the victims of the Munich
massacre in Rio have been presented to the families by the organisations new president,
writes Justin Cohen.
Thomas Bach has met two of
the widows from the 1972 attack, which claimed the lives of
11 athletes and coaches in what
became the darkest moment in
the history of the Games.
He confirmed that a major
ceremony would be conducted
inside the Olympic village days
before the opening ceremony,
during which the victims names
will be read out in front of families, athletes and journalists.
A mourning area will be set

up in the village throughout the

two-week event, and a stone
brought from Olympia will be
placed on top of a monument,
in a nod to Jewish tradition.
Following an extremely
warm meeting lasting more
than two hours at IOC headquarters in Lausanne with Bach
and his deputy, campaigner
Ankie Spitzer hailed the IOCs
historic and courageous steps.
Its much more than weve
had before. We hope it will teach
young athletes who may not be
aware about the darkest days in
the history of the Olympics. Our
message is that it must not happen again. From the moment he
came to office, Thomas Bach
wanted to do something.

Campaigner Ankie Spitzer has praised the IOCs decision

Spitzer, who was joined by

Ilana Romano, said Bach was
moved to learn for the first
time of the invitation that the
families had issued to the Palestinian delegation to a commemoration organised by the Israeli
Olympic Committee at the Atlanta Games in 1996.
The families have spent
decades campaigning for a tribute during the Games opening
ceremony. A petition ahead of
the London Olympics gained

tens of thousands of supporters.

A moment of reflection will
also be held during the closing
ceremony in Rio to enable participants and viewers to remember
loved ones. But no plans have
been revealed to mention explicitly the Munich victims, as the
families would like to see.
Spitzer, whose husband Andre
was among those who lost their
lives, said she had not given up
hope of such a tribute being incorporated into the moment.

A JEWISH FORMER BBC executive has compared Jews

Danny Cohen, the national

In reference to Trumps infa-

Cohen said: If you are Jewish
how can you vote for them?
How could you? For me it
would be like being a Muslim

Cohens comments will be
seen as political, and timed to
heap yet more pressure on
the Labour leadership, which

has faced criticism after several weeks in which party

councillors and members
were suspended or banned
for anti-Semitic comments.
You have to feel absolutely

havent felt comfortable that
it is happening yet in the

Tunnel found
THE ISRAELI military said it
has discovered and destroyed
a tunnel burrowing from Gaza
into Israel the first to be uncovered since Israels 2014

Israeli troops detected the
tunnels exit, still underground, several days ago, according to military spokesman
Lt Col Peter Lerner, who
added he believes the tunnel
was built after the war.
It extended about 100 metres (325ft) from Gaza into Israel and was lined with
cement and outfitted with
electricity, ventilation and rail
tracks to cart away dirt from
digging, Lt Col Lerner said.
He said it was not clear
when exactly the tunnel was
destroyed.

Unicef: Israel is falling behind

ISRAEL HAS the highest level of

child poverty in the developed
world, according to a new Unicef
report, and is falling behind
hugely in health and education.
The damning figures were
identified in the Fairness for Children study report card, which
asked: How far behind are children being allowed to fall?
They show that child poverty,
as a percentage of the population, is higher in Israel than in
places like Chile, Turkey, Mexico
and Romania, with poverty
measured as households with
income below 50 percent of the
national median income.
In health, too, Israel came
comfortably bottom in the list of
35 countries, which charts the
gap between the health of

Israel has the highest level of child poverty according to a new report

IN FOCUS: PREPARING FOR PASSOVER

BREAKING MATZAH WITH

MANY FAITHS

The Islamic Society of Britains JOE DOBSON

enjoys an interfaith seder hosted by Reform
Judaisms top rabbi and gains more than
just an education in Jewish tradition

AS I SAT on the tube on the way to a pre-Pesach

seder hosted by Senior Rabbi to Reform Judaism
Laura Janner-Klausner, it dawned on me that I am
not friends with any Jewish Londoners. Jewish acquaintances, yes. Ive
attended interfaith events at synagogues, but true friends? Not really.
Upon arriving at Rabbi Lauras
lovely home, we were swiftly introduced to our fellow guests. I met
leading activists within Britains
faith communities, including Yasmeen
Akhtar of the Three Faiths Forum and
Bharti Taylor, the first Hindu woman
to be invited to be a Member of
the European Council of Religious
Leaders.
Straight talking Naz Shah MP spoke
about her own belief in equality between us all as
human beings.
By the time Elizabeth Joy of the Indian Orthodox
Church introduced her PhD research into the
impact gender, ethnicity and class have on ones
perception of God, I was left feeling entirely inadequate in my knowledge of my own faith never

mind anyone elses.

Rabbi Laura, together with rabbinical students
Yaera Ratel and Roberta Harris, led us through
what I understand to be a typical Reform seder,
using the Reform Haggadah.
Each guest took turns to read sections with the
singing, led by the Jewish guests. Conservative MP
Andrew Percy arrived after the explanation of the
practice of leaning to the left when
eating, so when it was later mentioned
in passing that we all lean to the left
he incredulously exclaimed: Well,
I dont lean to the left. Im still not sure
if it was a joke or a misunderstanding,
but it was the funniest line of the night.
The evening did briefly descend
into something akin to a sitcom plot
when Alex Fenton, Rabbi JannerKlausners director of public affairs,
phoned the cook to clarify if the
charoset was alcohol free. It wasnt.
So the Muslim guests and the game
Rabbi Laura ate the maror neat, causing Faisal Iqbal of the British military to note:
Its never wise to invite Muslims to dinner.
Moments of theological and geopolitical disagreement could not be avoided entirely. Stephen
Tunstall of the Christian charity Embrace The
Middle East controversially suggested that the
search for the afikoman is clearly trumped by the

Guests including Joe Dobson, inset, gathered around Rabbi Lauras dinner table for a special seder

Easter search for chocolate eggs, while postgraduate student Alyaa Ebbiary and Andrew Percy got
into a heated debate about two peoples in conflict over several hundred years the nations of
Yorkshire and Lancashire.
At this point, with laughter from all those
around the table, I saw the positive impact this
seder would have. This is not about Christians,
Hindus or Muslims knowing how Jewish rituals are

conducted Wikipedia could have told us that.

It is about friendship, trust and laughter.
Hosting a seder in your home and inviting those
of other faiths to join you is a far braver and more
personal act than to host an interfaith event at a
place of worship.
It demonstrates, in a very personal way, that as
free peoples we have the choice to show love and
friendship to all.

Beth Din: Pesach staples at their cheapest Giving the festival its fizz
THE LONDON Beth Din
has said a combination of
foreign imports and a
drive to certify regular
products as kosher-forPassover means some Pesach products in the UK
this year are cheaper
than ever before, writes
Angie Jacobs.
The claim, made by
Rabbi Jeremy Conway, the
director of the Kashrut Division of the KLBD, came
amid renewed attention
on the price of goods for
the Jewish holiday, which
need special certification.
We are delighted that
due to imports from Israel
and America, and increased competition locally, a huge range of
Pesach products, and especially staple items, are
available at cheaper prices
than ever before, he said.
Conway added that the
London Beth Dins supervision is provided at costprice and that the KLBD
was working to certify
regular products as suitable for Passover use.
As an example, he
added that Tate & Lyle
sugar bearing a KLBDP
stamp was now available
at the normal price.
Pesach shoppers re-

searching prices have

found the cheapest matzos are currently available
from Morrisons, at 50p
per box when buying six.
Sainsburys, which sells
the next cheapest at 80p,
has also been selling a fine
matzo meal at 1 per bag
and Kedem grape juice on
sale for 1.50.
Other items need to be
bought at a specialist outlet, with shoppers expected to pay upwards of
3.99 for a box of shmurah matzos in Kosher
Kingdom and up to
20.99 for gluten-free oat
shmurah matzo in Kays.
Shopper Kathryn Phillips praised Kosher Kingdom because its an
experience, its fun, especially that Israeli lady on
the till, but added: It is
expensive, but you would
expect that.
Barbara Edwards from
Hendon, said she had seen
a horse-radish/mayonnaise
combination at 3.69 for a
1lb bottle, and a 1kg carton of whole egg for
4.15 in Kays.
I just buy the basics,
she said. We spent a fortune between Kosher
Kingdom and the Kosher
Outlet.

Pricey price: Cheese 11.59, horseradish 6.49, prune juice 5.75, honey 4.99

IT SEEMS seder isnt seder

without our familiar bottles of
fizzy pop on the table alongside the four cups of wine,
writes Lisa Sanders.
According to Deborah Felstein, the UKs sole importer
for kosher for Passover Coke
and Sprite, we cant get
enough of the
stuff. UK customers
knock
back far more of
the carbonated
drinks
during
the week-long
holiday
than
France,
Italy,
Belgium
and
Spain. Im not
going to tell you
how much we
drink, but its a
lot, she says.
Felsteins company, Foodfads Ltd, is now in its 25th
year. I was newly married,
she remembers, And when I
went to do my Pesach shopping at the kosher supermarket, there was just this
Snowcrest lemonade to drink.
My parents lived in Belgium
at the time. And when we
went to visit them for the
seder they had Coke! I figured, if they can get it in
Belgium, why not bring it to
London?
Why not indeed. The bottles are shipped from the

Coca Cola factory in Bnei

Brak during the first week in
February, ready for distribution to the supermarkets and
kosher shops.
Discerning drinkers may
have noticed that this Israeli
Coke tastes different. It is
sweeter, admits Felstein.
It is because
the Israeli water
is
naturally
sweeter.
Ensuring the
drinks are kosher
for Passover is a
tricky business.
Ordinary, nondiet Coke is certified by Bnei
Braks Rav Landau. But Rav
Landau wont approve the diet
version since Coca-Cola will
not reveal the source of the
aspartame it uses.
The diet drinks are therefore certified by the Israeli
rabbinate. But isnt Coca-Cola
supposed to have a secret
recipe? In which case, how
does kosher certification
work?
Coca-Cola gives the Rabbinate a list of 20 ingredients,
of which some are in the
drink, reveals Felstein.
The rabbinate gives a
hechsher to all the ingredients. So its definitely kosher.

UK NEWS
SPECIAL REPORT: UK-ISRAEL MEDICAL COLLABORATION

Its speed dating... for scientific research

BY JENNI

FRAZER
WITH A GRIN, one of the
organisers of the third Birax
conference on regenerative
medicine noted that part of
the second day of the event
would be devoted to speed
dating.
She was not altogether
joking. Birax the BritishIsrael Research and Academic
Exchange Partnership was
holding its largest ever conference, this year based at
the Mathematical Institute in
Oxford. More than 350 Israeli
scientists had come to the
UK to join their British counterparts for two days of
passionate discussions and
presentations.
About a third of the delegates are already involved in
scientific projects in vital fields
such as Parkinsons, dementia,
multiple sclerosis and other
degenerative conditions.
But many of the other participants had come to Oxford
actively looking for a partner
and the Birax organisers were
determined to help them.
From basic indicators, such
as different coloured lanyards
for the Israeli and British

Dr Roi Gazit of the National Institute for Biotechnology in the Negev

scientists to a speed dating

session in which people
could meet each other to see
if their research was compatible, everything at Birax
was dedicated to getting
groundbreaking co-operation
in place.

Dr Roi Gazit, who holds

a chair in health sciences
at Ben-Gurion University, was
making his first visit to Britain
in the hope of linking up with
a British opposite number to
help him in his research.
He said: Its very easy

to read other peoples work,

but this conference gives us
a great opportunity to meet.
Like so many Israelis,
I studied first in Israel and
then took the usual route
of post-doctorate studies in
America. But I heard about
Birax and the possibility of
working with UK scientists,
and this conference is great:
its just big enough to be
impressive, and just small
enough to be intimate.
Dr Gazits work relates to
the reprogramming of stem
cells and whether contaminated adult blood cells can
be cleansed. Presently he
works with mice, but hopes to
attract a British partner who
can advance the research and
develop the programme in
humans.
Dr David Hampton of Edinburgh University is coming
to the end of a three-year
Birax funded project in
which he works with Dr Yossi
Nishri, who is a research student at Hadassah Hospital in
Jerusalem.
Dr Hampton, who is based
at the Centre for Clinical Brain
Sciences, is working on research into multiple sclerosis.
He and Dr Nishri are working
on two aspects a model of

the path of the human disease

in Edinburgh, and cell systems
in Jerusalem.
Hadassah contacted us initially, explained Dr Hampton.
Ive had many collaborations
in the past 15 years, but what
makes Birax work is where the
science is good and the people are good, too because
there is a social element to
this, as well.
We really get on. Yossi has
been to Edinburgh three or
four times and Ive made
return visits to Jerusalem.
Its been very worthwhile.
You can make all the phone
calls and read all the literature, but talking is key
and thats what this event
offers.
Dr Hampton acknowledged
that some scientists were
territorial about their work,
but pointed out the dozens
of conversations going on
around us Israeli blue lanyards deep in discussion with
British grey, men and women,
young and old, religious and
atheist.
Partners in the Birax work
include the Alzheimers Society, Arthritis Research UK,
the British Heart Foundation,
the MS Society and Parkinsons UK.

Regev welcomed
MORE THAN 130 churches and
ministries have welcomed
Mark Regev to his new role of
Israeli ambassador to the UK.
Regev was given a welcome
card by Christian broadcaster
Simon Barrett and Steven
Jaffe, a consultant to the Board
of Deputies.
Barrett signed on behalf of
the signatories of the Shalom
Declaration, a Christian initiative to combat anti-Semitism
and support Israel.
Regev, who marked the start
of his term by addressing the
Board last week, said: I look
forward to working with our
many Christian friends across
the UK.

EDITORIAL COMMENT AND READERS LETTERS

Bottom of the barrel

HOW DID it come to this? The
new representative of students in
Britain thinks the Zionists are out
to get her. As if things on campus
couldnt get any worse.
Malia Bouattia may possibly
be a well-meaning person. She
may just need to grow up. In the
meantime, she seems to have no
problem stoking hatred and
perpetuating the feeling that
Israel is at the centre of all evil.
Shes beyond the boycotters.
Shes beyond the academics arguing about Israels legitimacy. Shes
not quite with the jihadists, but
shes close, and is unapologetically sympathetic to Palestinian
resistance i.e. armed struggle.
To be clear Jewish News
applauds any student body
diverse, inclusive and sure
enough to elect a black, Muslim,
Algerian-born left-winger forced
to flee her country when she was
11. Thats not our issue.
Our issue is that it has

approved the views of someone

who refused to condemn Islamic
State. It has approved the
thoughts of someone who rants
against Zionist-led media and
Zionist outposts when evil antiSemitism is on the rise. Its that it
has elected someone who thinks
Israel-Palestinian peace talks
strengthen the colonial project.
Even before Wednesdays
announcement, which was
preceded by applause for someone arguing why the National
Union of Students shouldnt
commemorate
Holocaust
Memorial Day, we worried
about Jewish students. Now
were terrified. Because shes
their representative. If she held
views anything like their own,
she wouldnt be.
So mazeltov to Malia from the
Zionist media she loves to hate,
and to the 371 people who
voted for her. Well done to the
lot of you. You must be proud.

90 mazeltovs Maam!
THE RECORDS keep on tumbling
for Her Majesty. The longest serving Monarch, the oldest serving
Monarch and now the first King
or Queen of England to reach
the big 9-0. During a reign lasting 64 years, she has seen 12
prime ministers come and go.
Hers is a record of dedicated
and unbroken public service
unlikely to be overtaken. So
much so that even avowed
Republicans happily put aside
their reservations to provide a
mazeltov message as part of our
90 For 90 initiative with the Board
of Deputies.
We didnt, of course, need six
pages of messages from the
great and good of Anglo-Jewry
to show the affection in which
our Queen is held by British

Jewry you just need to pop into

shul on Shabbat to hear prayers
for the Royal familys wellbeing.
But the 90 messages from
leading lights in the world of politics, business, the arts and charity
are a reminder of her impact on
so many facets of British life as
well as the wide-ranging contribution of British Jewry during her
reign; ironically, they are at the
same time a reminder of the
huge changes she has overseen
and as an effective retort to
those who argue for an end to
royalty as you can get.
There are many reasons to
celebrate today. We hope thousands will join our call to mark a
Royal Shabbat [see page 5]

A SLUR THAT WILL BE

SPREAD TOO EASILY
I was saddened by your recent headline, Top
rabbi: Ban non-Jews [Jewish News, 31
March], about Israel Rabbi Yitzhak Yosefs
sermon in which he declared non-Jews
should not be allowed to live in Israel unless
they abide by the Noachide laws.
These laws amount to little more than
agreeing to live according to the rule of law,
expected by any civilised country.
Rabbi Yosef only excluded, for example,
those who wish to exercise their right to
murder. Why should Jonathan Arkush and
Richard Verber find that an embarrassment?
A more appropriate headline would have
been: Israeli Chief Rabbi states that,
according to Jewish law, all non-Jews who
uphold basic moral values and the rule of law
are welcome to live in Israel.
Giving an untrue impression that he advocated ethnically cleansing Israel of all its nonJewish residents is a slur that will be all too
eagerly spread by those who delegitimise
Israel preparatory to its, for them, hoped-for
final elimination.

SOMETIMES KOSHER
REALLY ISNT KOSHER
All food is either kosher or not, claims letter
writer Michael Rosen [Jewish News, 31

Hungry Housewife page.
Really? How come some Jews find kosher
food not kosher enough for them, but have
to have special glatt kosher pre-wrapped
dishes provided for them? As George Orwell

kosher is more equal than others.

Satmar follow the strict view of Maimonides
that it is wrong to teach girls Torah and do not
even open a Chumash in a girls school.
Aside from the Hirschian Frankfurt School,
most Haredi girls schools limit girls Torah
studies to the practical Halacha required for
women. Only boys follow the intensive

In some Charedi circles, the boys have

HISTORIC TREATY IS
SIMPLY IRRELEVANT
If only Middle East peace was as simple as
some of your correspondents have us
believe. For Uri Rabin and Peter Baum it is
all so clear. If only the Palestinians would
read the 1920 San Remo Treaty or the terms
of the Mandate (from the same vintage), it
would be so blindingly obvious to them and
their supporters that they would give up
their fight for a state.
The truth is that for every treaty dating
from a period when imperial rule was seen as
normal, there is another that could be used
in support of the opposite view (for example
the UN resolution of 1947 that validated both
a Jewish and an Arab state).
Looking backwards 30, 60 or 100 years will
not help anyone, because no one today is
going to base his or her views on what should
happen now in the 21st century on what
statesmen declared in the early 20th.
The tragedies of that century certainly
shape todays political thinking, but what
really matters is what is happening today
on the ground, to both peoples.
The senseless terrorism and continuing
occupation, the despair and incitement,
need to be tackled. The text of the San Remo
treaty will not be of much consolation.

OPINION:
RABBIJENNI
MIRIAMFRAZER
BERGER AND MARK MAIER
OPINION:

Rare political moment of

clarity for the Israeli right
PERCEPTION, I have begun to think, is nine
points of the law. If something looks bad, our natural assumption is to believe it IS bad, and generally we fail to make the necessary inquiries. The
question is whether to take something at face
value or pick it apart for its probable motivation.
What, for example, are we to make of the recent visit to Israel, at the invitation of the ruling
Likud party, of the leader of Austrias Freedom
Party, Hans-Christian Strache?
Its only four years since Strache posted an antiSemitic cartoon on his Facebook page; and yet,
apparently, according to a report in a Vienna
newspaper, his intention in going to Israel was to
make himself kosher.
Straches ambition was duly achieved with a
visit to Yad Vashem, though a more politicallysavvy response came from former Israeli president
Shimon Peres, who refused to confer on Strache
the legitimacy of a meeting.
According to reports, some Likud politicians
have been pressing for years for the ban on contacts with the Freedom Party to be lifted.
Most notorious under its late leader Jorg
Haider, the party has become a by-word for its
anti-Muslim sentiments and, allegedly, it is now
in favour of settlement building in Israel, thus potentially explaining Likud support.
So was it a good thing that Strache got to tour

Yad Vashem? Possibly: if I thought for a minute

that it might go to changing his mind about Jews,
I might applaud it.
As it is, it seems to me to have been a cynical
exercise in rebuilding the Freedom Partys image
and not much more. I cant, comfortably, believe
that the Strache leopard changed his spots.
However, in another part of the right-wing forest, some other perceptions may be changing. Uri
Ariel is Israels agriculture minister and has just
paid a visit to some of the West Bank checkpoints.
Ariel is a member of the Jewish Home Party
and has no automatic love for prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whom he frequently denounces
as not right-wing enough.
But even Ariel appears to have been shocked
at the conditions imposed on Palestinians waiting to come in to Israel to work.
He said: Go and see how they stand and wait
to enter Israel at the checkpoints. Its shameful and
a disgrace to the state of Israel and to the security
establishment. People stand there in terrible conditions: in the summer, heat, in the winter, rains.
He added that workers often arrived before
dawn and waited for hours without shade or
water. He asked: Why cant we fix this?
I may say that in line with the general air of
cynicism about such pronouncements some of
Ariels words it may have been uttered as a way

of attacking Netanyahu. Part of me also responds

by saying and now the late news, insofar as
Ariel appears just to have woken up to this disgrace to the state of Israel when others have
been pointing it out for many years.
But, you know, we should sometimes take
what we can get. And if a politician like Uri Ariel
can make a statement like this and, in fact, go
further by saying that Gaza should have an international port, then should we not embrace what
he is saying, wholeheartedly?
I dont for a minute think that the minister is
about to become the Palestinians best friend.
But he appears to have been struck by a rare political moment of clarity, which should be welcomed by both those of the Left and of the Right.
This weekend, those re-telling the story of Pesach will have the annual opportunity to unpick
the thinking behind the Exodus, the plagues, the
suffering of the Jews as slaves in Egypt.
But above all, the seder is an occasion to celebrate freedom freedom from opportunism and
a chance to applaud simple human courage.
A friend has taken to signing off his emails, Do
good things.
Thats not a bad message with which to welcome Pesach as our liberation festival. Remember, perception is almost everything.
Chag sameach.

EPHRAIM
MIRVIS
& BRENDAN ONEILL

This years Yom HaShoah

poses a challenge to us all
PERHAPS SURPRISINGLY, this year, Yom
HaShoah poses a great challenge to us.
Last year I was enormously proud of British
Jewry at the 2015 Yom HaShoah National commemoration. It brought together people from
all parts of our community. Young and old, religious and unaffiliated Jewish people came in
their thousands to make an immensely powerful
statement: Seventy years on from the liberation
of concentration camps across Europe, the
Shoah would never fade into the annals of history, as the preserve of textbooks and museums. Rather, it would live within each and every
one of us as a part of our consciousness, a part
of our very identity. I was truly inspired by the
atmosphere and the shared commitment.
Indeed, the 70th anniversary, quite rightly
made international news headlines. The worlds
media gathered at Auschwitz earlier in the year.
prime ministers, royalty and parliamentarians
joined survivors at various events across the
globe to make a similar pledge.
There can hardly have been a single Jew on
the planet for whom the commemorations did
not invoke a sense of commitment to Holocaust
Memorial. And yet, even as I looked proudly
over the gathered crowds, a very deep concern
was forming what kind of statement will we
be able to muster for next year?
The 70th anniversary was certainly an appropriate time for the world to make its own

proclamation about the Shoah. But 70 is just a

number. With each passing year we must acknowledge that our collective task becomes
ever more challenging and, as such, particularly
for our precious Holocaust survivors, the 71st
anniversary is a whole year more important than
the 70th. Next year will be more important still,
and so on.
Consider the following, unavoidable truth.
This year, many tens of thousands of Jewish
children will be born who will probably never
hear the first-hand testimony of a survivor.
By the time they are old enough to do so,
there will be few, if any, survivors left for them
to listen to. For decades, we have talked about
how we would react when this time arrived.
Sadly, that time is now. We must internalise the
fact that there is no longer any opportunity for
planning or pledging. Our mantra of never forget must cease to be just a promise for the future and become a rallying call for action today.
It was with this thought in mind that at last
years Yom HaShoah event I explained that
hopefulness alone will simply not be enough, if
it is not accompanied by tangible action to become a living memorial.
It is no accident that in Jewish tradition we
use the symbol of a flame to identify the point
at which the material meets the spiritual. The
best known example of this is the way that we
memorialise those dear to us who have passed

on from the material to the spiritual world. But

though a flame can be extremely powerful, it is
also fragile and vulnerable. Left to burn alone,
it will eventually extinguish and disappear it
only survives if we protect and cultivate it.
This is a particularly evocative lesson for us
as we face up to the challenge of the 71st year.
It is too easy to make a gesture on the 70th anniversary and to feel that we have fulfilled our
obligation as a community, at least until the
75th or 80th anniversary.
A casual or occasional relationship with
Holocaust memorial is a recipe for extinguishing a flame we pledged to protect and it is a
dereliction of our collective responsibility.
So, this year, as Yom HaShoah approaches
without the tailwind of publicity that prompted
5,000 people to attend last years national
event, every one of us must ask ourselves what
personal ongoing commitment we will make to
Holocaust memorial. If you are able, take a few
hours out of your weekend to attend this years
community commemoration at Barnet Copthall
Stadium or perhaps attend an event at your
local synagogue or elsewhere.
But wherever you are and whatever you do,
it is essential that together, we rise to the challenge of the 71st year.

HaShoah National Commemoration Ceremony

Bonkers student politics has

the NUS president it deserves
IF YOU want to know how screwed-up student
politics has become, get this: the National Union
of Students is now run by someone who describes the mainstream media as Zionist-led.
Yes, this supposedly radical student outfit, famously packed with lefties who fancy themselves as progressive, now has a president who
peddles the same foul myths that are spouted
by hard right-wingers. NUS presidents once had
convictions; now they have conspiracy theories.
The new president is one Malia Bouattia. She
was formerly the NUSs black students officer, and
has now been elected its president.
She is a walking, talking snapshot of how
bonkers student politics has become.
In 2014, she refused to back an NUS motion
condemning ISIS and expressing support for the
Kurds on the basis that it was Islamophobic. She
said condemnation of ISIS is used as a justification for war and blatant Islamophobia.
When you cant even bring yourself to say ISIS
is wicked, to take a stand against a barbaric army
that slaughters infidels in the most obscene way
imaginable and treats women as the lowest form
of life, then you know your moral compass is
busted beyond repair.
Bouattia, as revealed by the student newspaper
The Tab, has also given a speech in which she
praised Palestinain violence and attacked the
Wests Zionist-led media for failing to tell the
truth about the Middle East.
In the speech she unwittingly exposed her
own disdain for ordinary Muslims. She said the
reason some of them dont support Palestinian
violence is because theyre suffering from in-

ternalised Islamophobia.
In short, theyre riddled with self-hatred, no
doubt as a result of having been brainwashed with
anti-Muslim misinformation by the media.
So, unlike her, your average Muslim is a bit
dim, fickle, suggestible, their hollow minds
colonised by Big Media. For someone who
claims to be concerned about Islamophobia,
Bouattia is weirdly fond of promoting a view of
Muslims as overgrown children.
Then theres her view of Zionists. She moves
far beyond criticising the idea of Zionism, into rumour-mongering about the evil reach of Zionists
into media life across the West.
She talks about mainstream Zionist-led media
outlets and claims theyre helping to oppress
the global South.
This echoes the foulest arguments pushed by
anti-Semites of old: that the press was controlled
by Jewish forces and that they used their privileged pedestal to hoodwink people and control
world affairs.
Bouattia might prefer Zionist to Jew, and
global South to the world, but her argument
amounts to a PC-rehashing of the vile notion that
those people have too much power.
Old fascistic cartoons showed caricatured Jewish figures feeding people slop/information from
a cauldron marked Juden Presse. Now this
idea has been given a bit of leftish spit-and-polish
and has been embraced by the NUS.
In some radical student circles, a nasty new
anti-Zio politics is taking hold. The chairman
of Oxford Universitys Labour Club resigned earlier this year, claiming some members have

some kind of problem with Jews. Other students now find it virtually impossible to hold proIsrael meetings without facing the shouts and
demands for censorship of student agitators.
The talk of Zios and their white privilege is
especially worrying. It suggests that the very student leaders who pose as anti-racist harbour some
worrying racial ideas of their own.
Indeed, its becoming a new rule of todays
Kafkaesque student politics that those who shout
loudest about the scourge of racism and the need
for Safe Spaces against bigotry will likely be purveyors of the oldest racism and the oldest bigotry.
This is because their outlook isnt really one of
anti-racism, that old, noble goal of achieving
equality and freedom for all. Rather, they practise
the politics of identity, something altogether different, something sectional and ugly and motivated more by the culture of victimhood than a
belief in egalitarianism.
And in this privilege-checking world, where
theyre constantly creating hierarchies of the
oppressed, Jews are just too white and nice
for their liking, so they must be bad, undeserving of sympathy, and perhaps deserving of hatred. In the pseudo-radical name of checking
white privilege, they resuscitate some very
old racial thinking.
When I was at university 20 years ago, the NUS
was obsessed with No Platforming the far right.
Now, in an eye-swivelling turnaround, it has
adopted some of the arguments of the far right.
Talk of a Zionist-led media is not progressive, its prejudice old, ugly prejudice, now at
the very top of the NUS.

OPINION:
RABBILAURA
MIRIAMMARKS
BERGER AND MARK MAIER
OPINION:

Alarming Muslim survey is

reason to do more, not less
LAST WEEKS Jewish News reported on a poll
from a Channel 4 programme called What
British Muslims Really Think, which can only be
described as dispiriting and very worrying.
The survey found more than a quarter of British
Muslims felt Jews were responsible for most
wars compared to a six percent average across
the UK with more than a third agreeing Jews
talk too much about the Holocaust, have too
much control over global affairs and dont care
about what happens to anyone but their own
kind. Generally the survey found a much lower
level of integration and higher level of antipathy
towards Jews than we would have hoped for.
However, as we have seen many times, including at the last General Election, polls are
often flawed. And this one by ICM, which interviewed 1,081 adults between April and May
last year certainly has some serious problems.
Primarily, the survey took place in areas with
a high density of Muslims, which also happen
to be the poorer areas of the country. As you
would expect, and as is true for any race or religion, these are areas where you get the highest levels of inward looking dissatisfaction.
The results were then compared with a telephone survey of people generally in the UK, so
did not compare like with like.
That said, even if flawed, these findings are still
very disturbing and not to be ignored.
The question is what can the Jewish commu-

nity do about it? We often tend to face inwards

and hope to be safe in our own sheltered world.
We may express our upset and demand
change, but if all we have are words then how
will improvement actually come about?
Over the past week I presented at an interfaith
session at the European Union for Progressive Judaisms Biennial Conference and at a Muslim interfaith conference in honour of the memory of
Syeda Fatima. At both I asked how many people
had a friend from another faith group. Few hands
went up. This is even though both conference
halls were full of activists, with people on stage
actively arguing for the need for interfaith work.
This will start to explain some of the attitudes
Muslims have towards us. After all, if you have
Jewish neighbours, colleagues and friends, its
difficult to continue to believe that they are the
secret rulers of the world.
And, in all the outrage in the Jewish community
over the findings, there is an elephant in the room.
Imagine a similar survey in a densely populated
Jewish area, where the respondents have little or
no contact with any Muslim people. I wonder if
wed find similar percentages to those agreeing
with negative statements about Muslims.
Again, where there is more integration,
these numbers must surely fall. Its hard to believe that all Muslims are potential terrorists
when youve just had your Muslim friends
round for Friday night dinner or organised a

collection for a local foodbank with them.

Nisa-Nashim, Mitzvah Day and similar projects
including the Muslims brand new Sadaqa Day
are all about building local communities from
the bottom up, one person at a time.
At last years Mitzvah Day a project involving
Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis and Imam Ibrahim
Mogra the Assistant Secretary General of the
Muslim Council of Britain made the headlines.
But it is the grassroots projects around the
country, between Jews and Muslims that I am really proud of. Whether giving blood, tidying local
communal areas or collecting for refugees the
fact that Jewish and Muslim people of all ages are
starting to engage, side-by-side, is what will ultimately make a difference.
People mainly see Mitzvah Day for the good
deeds done and the charities helped. But there is
a much deeper long-term benefit of building relationships between communities and bringing
together people who otherwise may not have
met. Not just Jews and Muslims, but Christians,
Hindus, Sikhs and those of all faiths and none.
Of course, we can choose to believe all Muslims hate Jews. But for me doing nothing is not
an option. Lets reach out and try to build friendships and understanding.
Its clearly time to do more, not less.

The Queen is an outstanding asset for

London, bringing hundreds of thousands
of visitors to this great city every year.
We in London are lucky to have her not
only as the Queen, but as a resident!
NICKY GAVRON AM

There are rare individuals whose

greatness speaks across ethnic and
religious divides. Your Majesty is such
an individual, and the world has been
blessed by you. Your contribution to
British society is immeasurable and the
respect you have shown for all religions
has enriched our lives. Happy birthday
on this special occasion.
RABBI LORD JONATHAN SACKS

It gives me the greatest pleasure

to convey the Jewish communitys
heartfelt greetings to Your Majesty on
the milestone occasion of your 90th
birthday. You perform your role as
Head of State with the utmost grace,
dignity and warmth. Long may you reign
in good health and strength.
JONATHAN ARKUSH

Your Majesty. Congratulations on

reaching this landmark and presiding
over a society, which amongst its many
admirable qualities, allows its citizens to
make fun of those in power. It seems to
me that the strength of a democracy can
partly be measured by the level of satire
it tolerates. May you continue to reign
over a country which values and defends
freedom and free speech.

The global admiration for our Queen

makes me enormously proud to be
British. At 90 her devotion to this
nation never falters. I was delighted the
Queen chose to visit Bergen Belsen
concentration camp in Germany last
year, honouring the British Liberation
forces and moving Jews everywhere.
For that and all she does I wish her the
happiest of birthdays.
RICHARD DESMOND

Many congratulstions! Thank you for

all your work supporting commemoration
of the Holocaust as Patron of the
Holocaust Memorial Day Trust for the
past 10 years, your visit to BergenBelsen last year and your kind words
when meeting survivors. Warm wishes
for your continuing happiness and
good health.
OLIVIA MARKS WOLDMAN

Her Majesty's achievements are many

but perhaps the most impressive is her
stewardship of the extraordinary
organisation that is the Royal Family. Her

The Royals enduring popularity and

The stability and good feeling The Queen

has given to the United Kingdom must be
cherished and celebrated. It is unique to
have such a long standing monarch who
exhibits such strength. I am proud to have

POJU ZABLUDOWICZ

I salute the achievements of Her Majesty

the Queen. The Hebrew Prophets required

Queen Elizabeth II fulfils them both and

Your gracious warmth when we met at

Henley Business School in Diamond Jubilee

honoured me with my OBE touched those of
my family. Ours, and the hearts of the nation,
are yours.
JONATHAN SHALIT

You are a role model head of state who

has acted as a force of stability in an everchanging world. Your reign will be
remembered for many things by different
people, but for me it is marked out by the
evolution of Britain being the country
with the largest number of anti-gay

when you ascended to the throne, to
today being the country with the most
progressive laws for LGBT people in the
world.

When the country has celebrated

moments of the greatest national joy
and when we have struggled together in
times of the greatest desolation, you
have been generous in your wisdom and
unwavering in your fortitude. Since Jews
resettled in Great Britain some 360 years
ago, we have relentlessly pursued the
great British dream, to prosper in a
society which sees the humanity in all
people and feels a sharp sense of
responsibility to one and all. Your
Majesty, you are the very embodiment of
these values
CHIEF RABBI EPHRAIM MIRVIS

Senior Rabbi, Reform Judaism

Chairman, Community Security Trust

The Queen has served our nation diligently and

passionately for 63 years. She is a uniting figure
in our country that celebrates diversity of ideas
and backgrounds. Within Britain, Jews live safe
and vibrant lives, confident in our identity as part
of the Jewish community, and as a part of
Britain, and we are grateful to Her Majesty for
always showing us such strong support. As the
Talmud says "Those who work for the
community should do so for the sake of
Heaven... their righteousness will endure forever".
RABBI LAURA JANNER-KLAUSNER

A journalist friend once said this of the Queen

and Ive never forgotten it: She has a sort of
gravitational pull and an energy field around
her. Her skin and smile are just amazing. I was
overwhelmed by her power upon meeting
her. Power she may have, but our selfless
monarch wears it lightly and wields it
shrewdly. Many many happy returns, Your
Majesty.

may she continue to do so.

My wife Gail and I have had the great

pleasure of meeting and talking with

Derbys A WINNER!
Francine Wolfisz takes her family to Derby to
enjoy the historical sights and stunning views

ore a town than country girl, this is not my

typical weekend morning. Im sitting on
a hay bale inside a large barn, equipped
with hat, wellies and waterproofs and surrounded
by cows, goats, sheep and alpacas while listening
to the fast-paced strains of the Benny Hill theme
tune.
Next to me is my five-year-old daughter, enthusiastically holding an overlarge baby bottle filled
with milk to feed the newly-born lambs. We are
racing against the clock and a similarly attired
team sit on hay bales opposite, but alas, our poor
little lamb is a slow drinker.
When the race is over, our lamb slinks back to
its woolly-coated mother, tummy full and satisfied
and we also leave, to coo over his friends, some
of whom were born just hours before our arrival.
Lambing season is just one of the many childfriendly attractions at the National Forest Adventure Farm, located in Tatenhill, a picturesque
village close to Burton upon Trent, Derbyshire.
We are exploring the county for the weekend
and the National Forest is a great place to start.
The forest project, which began in 1990 covers
200 square miles and three counties in the Midlands: Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Staffordshire. As we wend our way along the old country
roads, we can see the forest is still very much in
its infancy, but nevertheless transforming the

Trying on a selection of costumes from times gone by

rolling hills beyond into a canopy of green.

Heading northwards, we come across two
places that catch my husbands interest (given his
love for beer and pickles!). The first is Branston,
birthplace of Branston Pickle, which originally
came off the production line here in 1922, while
nearby Burton upon Trent is home to the Bass
Brewery, founded in 1777. The National Brewery
Centre now stands on this historic site.
But Derbyshire is not just beer and pickles.
At the heart of the county is Derby itself, once
just a market town, which grew rapidly in the 18th
century and can lay claim to being one of the
birthplaces of the Industrial Revolution, particularly in textiles, railways and transport.
Today, the remnants of this historic past can still
be seen at the Derby Silk Mill, the worlds first fully
mechanised factory, which is open part-time as
a science and engineering museum, as well as
at Derby Litchurch Lane Works, the UKs only
remaining train manufacturer. The city is also
home to Rolls Royce, while Toyotas UK manufacturing headquarters is sited in nearby Burnaston.
History buffs might also like to take a walk
through the citys Cathedral Quarter, full of historic tea rooms, boutiques and typical Georgian
architecture, as well as the Derby Museum and
Art Gallery, which includes paintings by landscape
artist and Derby native, Joseph Wright.

Lamb feeding at the National Forest Adventure Farm

The children also had a great

time at Pickfords House Museum,
home of 18th century architect
Joseph Pickford, which presents
rooms as they would have originally
looked.
The attic room is filled with a toy theatre collection, including one that youngsters can play with, while the dedicated
playroom on a lower level is filled with Georgian,
Victorian and Edwardian costumes for them to
try on.
In terms of its Jewish community, a recent census revealed that almost 150 people in Derby
identify with Judaism. The small congregation
that lived here from the 19th century until the
1960s has declined further in recent decades
and is now absorbed into nearby Nottingham,
also home to the National Holocaust Centre and
Museum.
After a busy day exploring the city, we head off
to the Hallmark Hotel Derby Midland, which is
worthy of note as the first purpose-built railway
hotel in the world and a mere stones throw away
from the mainline station. Now part of the Hallmark collection, the Grade II listed landmark has
retained many of its original features, including its
classic red faade, colonnaded entrance and
walled garden, which provides a stunning backdrop for wedding parties.
Inside, the hotel evokes a contemporary
and homely feel. Our family-sized room, one
of the 102 bedrooms available on site, was
more than ample to accommodate the four of
us quite comfortably and I was interested to
note that Queen Victoria once stayed here. Well,
if its good enough for Her Majesty, itll certainly
do for us!
The hotels brasserie, which is well served by its
attentive staff, is reasonably-priced and has plenty
of vegetarian options on the menu, including
beer-battered fish, served with classic chips and
mushy peas, cod steam baked in parchment with
baby potatoes, red peppers and tomato, and
mushroom-filled gnocchi with toasted walnuts
and sage butter. There are also plenty of options
for youngsters.
The hotel is a great base from which to explore

our next destination northwards to the breathtaking views of the Peak District National Park,
around 15 miles away.
We didnt have quite enough time to also visit
the nearby Chatsworth House, stately home of
the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, which has

2 ORTHODOX JUDAISM

Torah
for
Today
BY RABBI NAFTALI

SCHIFF

THE TORAH views old age as

a virtue and a blessing and we
are enjoined to honour senior
citizens: You shall rise before
a venerable person and you
shall respect the elderly
(Leviticus 19:32).
My own experiences interviewing tens of octogenarian
and indeed nonagenarian
Holocaust survivors has further
reinforced the belief that elderly people have wisdom and
insight that is of tremendous
benefit to us all.
There is a longstanding
Jewish tradition of according
honour to monarchs in particular. This is a practice that
dates back to Jacobs encounter with Pharaoh in
Genesis chapter 47.
In this episode, Jacob refers
to Pharaoh with the utmost
deference in a manner befitting a ruler, bestowing upon
him a heartfelt blessing.
In his turn, Pharaoh, not to
be confused with his despotic

NEW A-GENDER

What does the

Torah say about... The trouble with trying to imitate

THE QUEEN
TURNING 90

successor of Passover fame,

similarly accords Jacob great
respect, as befits a man of his
stature.
The Talmud Brachot 58a requires one to make a blessing
on seeing a monarch and even
enjoins us to make extra effort
to go to see the honour that is
accorded to them.
The honour given to royalty
is seen as being an aspect of
Gods honour that has been
bestowed on mankind.
As we approach Pesach, we
are of course reminded of another type of monarch those
who abuse their power by terrorising their subjects and exploiting their status.
The Biblical Pharaoh was an
example of a despot who was
worthy of contempt, rather
than respect.
While the Torah views the
position of monarchy with
respect, the monarch is
expected to rule in a moral
and ethical fashion, with deference to human rights.
This idea is borne out from
the account of Elijahs confrontation with King Ahab
where the following takes

Sedra:
Pesach

BY RABBI JONNY

ROODYN

ITS THAT time of year again. Yes spring is

in the air.
Unlike Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the
primary focus of Pesach is the home and family, rather than
the synagogue
and community.
Pesach brings
with it an array of
familiar tastes, smells,
songs and other positive
associations.
The home is transformed
and everything looks, feels and
tastes different.
Perhaps precisely because it is a
home-orientated festival, it has occupied
a special place in our culture and heritage
for the past 3,328 years, spanning some 130
generations since the events of the Exodus
took place.
However, there is more to Pesach than
matzah, crackers and macaroons. On seder
night, family and friends gather for a festive
meal that takes a while to get going.
After we have had our first cup of wine and
small piece of vegetable, we have a rather

place: And it was when Ahab

saw Elijah, that Ahab said to
him: Is this you, the one who
brings trouble upon Israel?
And he said: I have not
brought trouble upon Israel,
but you and your father's
house (I Kings 18:17-18).
The Queens 90th birthday
is therefore most certainly a
cause for national and communal celebration.
Queen Elizabeth is the oldest ever reigning monarch
a true blessing in itself.
She has ruled our country
with dignity and wisdom since
1952 and has given Great
Britain a sense of stability that
so many other countries have
lacked during this time.
We are fortunate that our
country is an open and tolerant place to live and we
humbly offer her our heartfelt
thanks.
May the Almighty bless her
with many more years of good
health and happiness to continue to rule over this country
with good health and wisdom.

long wait before we get to the main course,

preceded of course by another cup of wine,
matza and maror.
This is the time when we do what Jews do
best talk!
The Hagaddah relates the story of Rabbi
Eliezer and his colleagues in Bnei Berak, who
were so engrossed in the seder story that they
were unaware that dawn had already broken.
These great sages knew the story inside
out. They were not looking for more information; rather they sought to deepen their
appreciation of the messages that the more
we talk about concepts, the more real and relevant they become to us.
There are many historical events that are
known about only through the history books.
By establishing a time of year when we can
discuss the events of the Exodus, the Torah
ensured that these events would never be forgotten.
In fact, the famous Kabbalist,
Rabbi
Yitzchak
Luria (also known
as the AriZal)
said that the
word Pesach is
made up of
the
Hebrew
words
peh
sach, meaning talking mouth.
Pesach is a night to talk. It is an
opportunity to engage in conversations
of Jewish history, destiny and, above all,
identity.
Through talking about the events of the Exodus, we keep the events of the past alive in
the present and preserve them for the future.
In the words of that classic BT campaign, its
good to talk!

chametz in our Passover cooking

BY REBBETZIN DINA

BRAWER

WHILE THE Torah prohibits leaven on Pesach,

Ashkenazi rabbis in the 15th-century further prohibited an entire category of legumes and pulses,
known as kitniyot, because they enabled creative
cooks to serve dishes resembling chametz too closely.
Yet despite the rabbis best efforts, our culinary
ingenuity cannot be stifled. Browse kosher supermarkets before Pesach and you find an endless array
of chametz look-alikes, from kosher for Pesach pasta
to pretzels, and even bagels. Our supermarket displays would have left the 15th century rabbis aghast!
This creativity is also evident in the recipes showcased in Passover editions of Jewish publications. I
am always amazed to read how a humble potato
can be whisked into some elaborate concoction, or
how marvellously tall and airy sponge cakes can be
whipped almost literally out of thin air, with enough
egg whites and sugar.
In the past, Ive been seduced by these promising recipes, and proceeded to cream, blend and
froth various ingredients with great hope.
While the end products came out of the oven
puffy and promising, within the first five minutes on
the cooling rack they sagged, slumped and languished disappointingly.
Chametz is illusory it represents the colouring
and additives we add to food to give it a particular

appearance. Even a glossy green apple, the epitome of a healthy snack, is tinkered with and submitted to a beauty and anti-ageing treatment
before it makes its way to our fridge.
Jamie Oliver reported in his recent TV series that,
at one farm, up to 10 tonnes of vegetables are
rejected each week simply because they are not
entirely blemish free, or their shape does not conform to our ideal image of healthy, fresh produce.
In contrast, matzah is unadorned and simple,
even if its not pretty.
It is modest, unpretentious food that serves its
purpose, which is to nourish. It is authentic to its
ingredients and neither entices nor deludes us with
false promises.
Passover invites us to get back to basics for eight
days. The concept of eliminating chametz suggests
that we let go of our impulse to manipulate, reconfigure and camouflage our food.
It calls on us to redeem ourselves from the
tyranny of trying to imitate chametz. It proposes the
possibility of cooking with wholesome ingredients
that retain their integrity.
Perhaps, through more simple and modest cooking, apart from achieving a healthier body, we can
emerge (from the kitchen!) redeemed.
Then we have the time to study Torah to share at
the seder and the mental space to absorb the spiritual energy of Pesach.

WHEN THE authorities fell citizens

palm trees to build bridges, said
the rabbis of the Talmud, we make
use of them. This proves that the
law of the land is a binding law.
But under the palm trees of
Panama, taxation works differently.
The Jewish vision of society is
based on social needs such as
bridges funded by contributions
from the people who benefit.
The ultra-wealthy clients of Panamanian commercial services firm
Mossack Fonseca, on the other
hand, had only one intention: escape their moral obligation to help
fund society.
Some of the ruses exposed are
legal, some semi-legal.
Some aim purely at enriching the
already rich, some at financing sex
trafficking or totalitarian regimes.
But underpinning them all is the
theme of ducking duty.
All the people who bank through
Mossack Fonseca continue to benefit from public services in their
various countries.
They are protected by their police forces and the military, served
by fire and ambulance services and
use roads and railways and water
pipes funded by taxpayers.
All this while they carry on using
artificial offshore arrangements to
ensure that they get out of paying
for it all.
Jewish texts are universal in their

condemnation of tax dodges.

One passage regards it as theft
(from the king). Another is concerned that its liable to bring the
Jewish people into disrepute.
Some modern rabbis go even further. The American sage Joseph B
Soloveitchik said that anyone who
has any financial dealings with any
company that cheats or individual
who cheats with taxes is guilty of a
sin: that of assisting others to sin in
their turn.
This has since been applied to
those who use companies perceived as having unethical tax policies, with names such as Amazon,
Google and Starbucks mentioned.
But ultimately it all boils down to
palm trees and bridges.
Society is what happens when
people come together to create
something that is greater than the
sum of its parts.
Tax ruses attack that principle,
making society an unfair place and
further disadvantaging the already
disadvantaged.
Pirkei Avot memorably asks us
Who is rich? and provides the answer: One who is satisfied with
what they have.
Mossack Fonseca is (hopefully
was) all about helping those trying to accumulate more than they
are entitled to. The company operates at the expense of society.
Tax dodges the technically legal
as well as the blatantly fraudulent
are Jewishly unacceptable.

MY JEWISH

HERO
THIS WEEK marks the 100th anniversary of Yehudi Menuhins
birth. There can be few better
choices as a Jewish hero.
Menuhin was the greatest violinist of the 20th century, if not
of all time. Albert Einstein attended his 1929 concerto debut
in Berlin, when Menuhin was
just 13-years-old, remarking
tearfully afterwards that the
day of miracles is not over.
In the 1930s, his biographer
Humphrey Burton says, Menuhin
had already become the most
famous kid on the planet.
That was the start of a contract
with EMI that is the longest in
the history of the music industry,

with recordings spanning 70

years the last coming in 1999,
shortly before his death at 82.
A national newspaper recently
described Menuhin as the violinist who changed the world.
This column could easily be

EVERYONE WANTS to feel empowered.

We all like the idea that we have the ability to
make change in the world around us.
At RSY-Netzer, our annual Veidah is one of
the prime opportunities to bring that change.
Veidah is a bit like an AGM for our movement, but a lot more exciting than that sounds.
Forty leaders come together to learn, have
fun and make decisions about what we
believe and do together as RSY-Netzer.
Its truly an opportunity to see your ideas
come to life and for everyone, no matter
where in their movement journey, to have a
voice.
We enjoyed brilliant sessions that helped inform us about some big topics of discussion,
such as how we can ensure our movements
actions do as little harm to the world around
us as possible, how we define our relationship
with Israel and how we can enable our leaders
to keep developing their skills and abilities.
Then we got down to discussing, debating
and deciding on what we wanted our movement to look like going forward.
One such decision was to support campaigns against indefinite detention of asylum
seekers the policy that means people can be
locked up for an unlimited time after arriving
in the UK.
Well be educating on this issue and supporting campaigns such as #key4freedom, run
by Rene Cassin and Tzelem (the Rabbinic social and economic justice campaigning
group), which will raise awareness in our community. We encourage you to join us.
I have been to Veidah on several occasions,
and it remains one of my favourite events.
Seeing empowerment of all of our leaders,
commitment to learning, passion for our beliefs and true informed decision-making
played out on a communal scale really is a
complete enactment of what our youth movement is all about.

Ben Lewis is an RSY-Netzer movement worker

This week Graham Carpenter,

Liberal Judaisms national
officer with responsibility for
music, selects Yehudi Menuhin
filled with such quotes and statistics, but what makes Menuhin
a hero is not what he could do
with violin, but how and where
he did it. Menuhin was born to
radical left-leaning Jewish parents arent we all who were
Russian immigrants to New York,
although he spent most of his
career performing in Europe.
During the Second World
War, Menuhin performed for Allied soldiers to raise morale for
their efforts to defeat the Nazis.
At its end, he performed for the
liberated inmates of the BergenBelsen concentration camp.
In 1947, Menuhin caused controversy by returning to Germany

and playing concerto with

the Berlin Philharmonic under
Wilhelm Furtwngler. Although
Furtwngler had publicly described Hitler as an enemy of the
human race, many at the time
felt that the conductor remaining
in Germany throughout the Nazi
era gave the Third Reich prestige.
Menuhin answered his critics
from the Jewish community, by insisting it was his duty to rehabilitate Germanys music and spirit.
Although denounced by many at
the time, history proved him right.
On this momentous anniversary, let his inspiring and liberal
actions be an inspiration to all
of us.

Do you have advice

on selling our flat?
Dear Ilan
We own a flat in Israel that we want to sell so we can buy
something bigger. Do you have any advice on how to sell?
Simon and Paula
Dear Simon and Paula
We comprehensively market properties throughout Israel locally,
nationally and even abroad. Here is a short guide on how it works.
Before putting a property on the market, we run a comparative
check on the value of properties sold in the area. We recommend
checking the property is properly registered in your name and what
capital gains or betterment taxes may be payable on the sale.
Dont keep a good buyer waiting while you try to tie up another
transaction. Avoid signing a Zichron Devarim (memorandum of
understanding) and always use a property lawyer. For the exchange
of contracts, you are able to use deposit funds from your sale towards a purchase. Legal and estate agency fees are due at this
point. Once you have a signed contract with funds in the bank to
act quickly, your hand as a prospective buyer is strengthened.

I need help to control

my credit card bills
Dear Priti
My credit card debts are out of control; Im hardly able to
make the minimum payments and the banks are chasing me.
Im really stressed. Please could you help?
Steven
Dear Steven
The first thing is to make a household budget, to understand how
much is coming in and how much is being spent each month.
Then put 10 to 15 percent aside as money for emergencies. This
will give you an idea of how much money you have left at the end
of the month and the rest is available for debt repayment.
If this is less than the amount you need to pay the minimum
payments, then you need to contact the credit card companies
to explain the situation. You can do this directly or use free services
such as Step Change or the Money Advice Service. Repayment
of the debt can then be organised. The free services often dont
discuss the most effective strategic way to deal with debt. For this,
it would be best to call me (we dont charge for this).

How can I get my PC

kosher for Pesach?
Dear Man on a Bike,
What can I do to get my computer kosher for Passover?
Jeremy
Dear Jeremy
As with the rest of Passover, its an opportunity to clean out the junk.
The first thing to do is get rid of the chametz; by running a disk
clean, youll get rid of the cookies that have built up and are not
kosher for Pesach. It will also get rid of junk files that bog down
your PC, just like that half-bag of self-raising flour does in the larder.
To clear out the files, press the windows button + R and then
type cleanmgr and press enter to get up the disc clean-up program running. You should also go through your emails and get rid
of all those you no longer need as they take up space and bog
down your email program. Also use this opportunity to check that
your anti-virus is up to date; youd hate to be plagued with problems and pop-ups that can plunge your machine into darkness.
Finally, give your machine a wipe over with a clean, dry cloth to
remove any crumbs and dirt. Have a happy and healthy Passover.

after debt.

Team hit Greens for six

to keep alive title hopes
Andrew

SHERWOOD
Can Hendon deny
Raiders their treble?
HISTORY IS in the offing for North London Raiders as they have
their sights on winning their first league and cup treble. Having
won the Cyril Anekstein Cup on Sunday, theyre a victory away from
retaining the Premier Division title and having seen Maccabi London Lions A thrown out of the Peter Morrison Trophy, can now win
all three trophies, which would match Hendons achievement of
2014. While Sundays hard-fought win over Oakwood may not have
been one for the purist, it was a game where they simply had to
dig deep to earn their first piece of silverware. Joint-manager Rob
Richman called it one hell of a tough game, and isnt so much
as taking one game, as opposed to one trophy at a time.
RAIDERS ARE still in the shout for a treble after Maccabi London
Lions A were thrown out of the Peter Morrison trophy for fielding
an ineligible player. A shame that one of the games of the season
was marred by this unfortunate oversight from the Lions, the Rowley
Lane side did all they could in terms of holding their hands up and
admitting their fault. Not how they would have wanted to get to
the final, Raiders nevertheless wont look a gift horse in the mouth.
THERE WAS a reported first in the NBA last week when the first Israeli sang the national anthem prior to the start of a match. Opera
singer Lianne Aharony was at the Barclays Center arena in Brooklyn
for the match between the Brooklyn Nets and Toronto Raptors. She
told the Jerusalem Post it was: Amazing, an incredible experience.
Its huge and its a big honour to be in a place like this and be part
of whats happening here.
AND FINALLY just to clarify, Sid Nathan was the former boxer and
referee who passed away recently, and not Stan as appeared.

THE VOICE OF JEWISH SPORT

FC TEAM B kept their slim

hopes of winning the Division
One title as a hat-trick from Jon
Breger helped them to a 6-1 win
over Faithfold B.
Adam Rones scored twice,
with Andy Sheena completing
the scoring. Player-manager
Mitch Young said: We struggled to find our rhythm in the
first half only leading 1-0. The
goal in itself was very fortunate
as well to be honest, but we
showed our quality in the second half and were very comfortable. Job done and on to the
next one!
Oakwood Bs promotion
hopes of a top-two finish are
over as they were held to goalless draw by Real Sosobad.
Os manager Jason Stein said:
This was a game that will not
live long in the memory. All in
all, Im happy enough to have
avoided defeat at this stage of
the season even if we could
have done much better in the
final third.
Sosobad manager Daniel
Shafron said: We clubbed together today and showed great
determination and desire to
work hard for each other for 90
minutes. We were disciplined in
our setup, very well organised
and kept Oakwood at bay for
the entire game. Im proud of
the boys, who can now enjoy a
few weeks off before our final
game against Brady.
Brixton Old Boys secured a
valuable point in their bid to escape relegation, as they held
Bradyto a point. Josh Kalinsky
scored for the hosts, with Reiss
Mogilner replying for Brady.
Maccabi London Lions B secured promotion to Division
One as they won 4-0 at North
London Raiders C. Benji Weinberger scored twice, withAdam
Abadi and Charlie Cohen also
on target. Manager Samuel

Chigwell cruise
into cup final

CHIGWELL will face Brady A

in the final of the Henry
Swerner Maccabi Masters
League Cup after they
thrashed Waldaf Town 10-1.
Adam Stolerman (pictured)
helped himself to a hat-trick,
Richard Slater and Dean
Nyman scored two each, with
Steve Summers, Jamie Fox
and Daniel Sugarman completing the scoring. Alex
Bourne netted Waldafs consolation goal. Chigwell will now
face Brady A in the final, next
month.
The final game of the Division Two League season saw
goals from John Perloff and
Adam Soller help St Johns
Wood Tigers to a 2-1 win over
EDRS. Steve Krieger scored
for EDRS.
Jonathan Breger (left) scored a hat-trick for FC Team B, while Reiss
Mogilner (right) earned Brady a point against Brixton Old Boys

Marchant said: Were delighted to be promoted. Our

target at the beginning of the
season was exactly that and it
feels fantastic to have achieved
it and in such style.
The football we played at
times today was truly sensational. The team knew what
today meant and its importance
and they went out with the required hunger and desire.
Everyone on the pitch was exceptional and we can now relax
and celebrate the achievement!
Catford & Bromley claimed
an impressive win against fast-

falling Hendon B. Jamie Sinai

and Ashley Stokes were on target, with player-manager Jeff
Gotch saying: Just like our previous games against Hendon,
we found ourselves trailing at
the break from some sloppy defending. But the second half saw
us make a couple of substitutions, and from there on it was
one-way traffic, as we took control with twoquick goals around
the hour mark
Its been an up and down
season where we have taken
most of our points from the top
fivesides in the league,anyway
its a good basis for next year.

Katz claims
table tennis title
DOV KATZ had two reasons to
celebrate at the weekend
having won the mens doubles
title at the Maccabi GB Open
Table Tennis Championships
and joined the current Wembley & Harrow Premier League
champions.
Katz claimed his eighth win,
when he teamed up alongside
Jack Josephs, while also announcing hes joined Apollo
alongside the current England
number 6, Costas Papantoniou
and his son Lucas.

Hendons double celebration

Hendon Uniteds U13/14 Excel League team completed a
league and cup double on Sunday afternoon. Dan Silver was
their player of the season, as they secured their second trophy
of the season at Parmiters School in Herts.

MARC JACKSON, a 47year-old

accountant
from Edgware, ran the
Paris Marathon in 4
hours and 24 minutes,
as he raised more than
1,000 for Emunah.
Saying the race was
tough because of the
heat, but an amazing
experience in a beautiful city, he was spurred
on to run by his wife
Wendy, who coordinates the charitys Emunah on eBay shop.
His second marathon to
support Emunahs work with
at risk children in Israel,
British Emunah Director Deborah Nathan said: Once
again Marc Jackson has gone

the extra mile for Emunah and

we are most grateful. Anyone
who would like to take on a
challenge for Emunah should
call 020 8203 6066 or email
deborah@emunah.org.uk

GYMNAST ALEX Shatilov has qualified for his third consecutive

Olympic Games.
The 29-year-old became the 29th
Israeli to qualify for Rio after finishing tenth in the All-Around competition in the Olympic Test Event. He
said: I want to go as far as possible
in Rio, I live and work for this. I will
try and strengthen my floor exercise
until Rio and I hope to do my best.

Wrestler Ilana Kratyshs hopes of

becoming the 30th Israeli to qualify
for the Games were dashed after
she suffered defeat in the first round
of the European Qualification Tournament. She will though have two
further opportunities to reach Rio.
Elsewhere, Israels top badminton player Misha Zilberman is
set to qualify for what will be his second Games.

RAIDERS OF THE
LOST OAK!
Treble hunters topple Oakwood
to win Cyril Anekstein Cup

BY ANDREW

SHERWOOD
NORTH LONDON Raiders
A kept alive their hopes of
winning a league and cup
treble after beating Oakwood in Sundays Cyril
Anekstein Cup Final.
Goals from Ricky Engleman
and David Dinkin saw them to
a 2-1 win at Wingate. They now
need one more victory to retain

the Premier Division title and

face Hendon the only team to
have won a Jewish football treble in 2014 in next months
Peter Morrison Trophy final.
But not wishing to get carried away with what they can
achieve, joint-manager Rob
Richman said: For us, part
one is done. Our next aim is
to gain the three points
needed to retain the league
title, which we're aiming to do
at the earliest opportunity.

Delighted with Sundays

win, he said: Were absolutely elated to have retained the cup. It wasn't the
greatest cup final, but in the
end we just had that bit of
quality to get us over the line.
I think we probably shaded
the first half, they were much
the stronger in the second until
cramp caught up with their
players in the final 15 minutes.
Theyre a great side and it was
a one hell of a tough game.

Oakwood joint-manager Ric

Blank didnt believe his side
deserve to be on the losing
side. He said: There was nothing between the two sides, but
ultimately we ran out of steam.
I said to the boys before the
game, deserve has nothing to
do with it. Its football. The winning goal came from a clear offside that only the linesman
failed to spot, which ultimately
was the difference between a
possible victory and a defeat.

Lions kicked out of Peter Morrison trophy

MACCABI LONDON Lions A have been
thrown out of this years Peter Morrison
Trophy final after they admitted fielding
an ineligible player in their semi-cup
final win over North London
Raiders A.
Lions beat the Raiders 5-4,
though fielded a player who featured in an earlier round for Maccabi London Lions B.
Competition organisers released
a statement saying: The National Football Committee
heard an appeal from
Maccabi London Lions
A. Under rule 8(d), they
admitted playing an in-

eligible player in their game against

North London Raiders A on 6th April
2016 and the decision of the disciplinary
hearing committee was to award
the game to North London
Raiders A under rule 8(o).
The committee found there
were no exceptional circumstances to enable the game to
be replayed.
Lions manager Andy Landesberg (pictured) told the
clubs website: It is obviously very disappointing, but its no ones
fault but mine as we
were playing to the

usual rules set by the MGBSFL rather

than the ones specific to this competition, so it was a genuine error.
We were at least able to advise the
Committee ourselves and it was important that we acted with honesty and in
good faith throughout. We received
praise for this at the hearing, despite
not being able to remain in the competition.
Handing Raiders the opportunity to
secure their first ever league and cup
treble, joint-manager Rob Richman said:
Its sad that what has happened has
slightly overshadowed what was an absolutely enthralling game which was a
superb advert for Jewish football.
