OBJECTIVE OF THE POSITION WHAT YOU WILL DO

Cadet Technical Officer/ Cadet Engineer / Intern work under regular direction to complete minor
projects as required, and to gain experience in investigations, design, project management, construction
and maintenance, asset management, operations and other activities associated with the provision of
engineering services in local government.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES THE WORK YOU WILL DO

1.

Under delegated direction from Branch Managers or Technical Supervisors perform various
duties to assist maintaining a high level of service to their customers.

2.

Under direction, carry out specified technical research and collect and compile data to provide
advice and support for problem solving in matters pertaining engineering services in local
government.

3.

Maintain effective communications with personnel of Toowoomba Regional Council


departments, to provide an open and free flow of information.

ABILITIES, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE WHAT YOU ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE

1.

Developing professional interest in the provision of engineering services and functions in local
government.

2.

The ability to undertake routine activities which require the application of basic skills and
techniques.

3.

Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritise own work and assist in establishing the objective of a
minor works project.

4.

A knowledge of Councils engineering and works functions including policies and procedures
relevant to the work area.

5.

Basic computing skills.

6.

Basic skills in oral and written communication with clients and other members of the public.

7.

The ability to ensure all work is performed to meet safety legislative requirements and
responsibilities of Council. This includes complying with all workplace instructions and
procedures, using protective equipment provided and not placing any peoples safety at risk by
your actions.

QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND LICENCES WHAT YOU ARE REQUIRED TO HOLD

1.

Currently enrolled, and undertaking studies and achieved substantial completion of a Bachelor in
Engineering, Engineering Technology or an Associate Degree of Engineering Majoring in
Mechanical from a recognised tertiary institution.

2.

Possession of WH&S Competency card for CPCCOHS1001A Work Safely in the Construction
Industry or 30215QLD Course in General Safety Induction (Construction Industry), or a
willingness to obtain this card before commencement.

Possession of a current C Class Drivers Licence.

Agree to act within the requirements of Councils policies

Act in accordance with the Local Government Act 2009 and the provisions of Councils Code of
Conduct

7.

Abide by Councils values for serving the community ie: responsive customer service; integrity
and impartiality; openness and accountability; and equity

8.

Abide by Councils OH&S policies, procedures and safety instructions; wear the protective
clothing and equipment when provided; and maintain all necessary licenses/professional/trade
memberships associated with the work you will be carrying out to ensure your own health and
safety and that of others within the workplace

9.

Be mindful and report all instances of environmental harm, which may be caused or discovered
in carrying out their duties. Employees working on an Environmentally Relevant Activity Site are
bound by the provisions of the Environmental Management System

10.

Be willing to obtain a Suitability Card to enable staff to work with people under eighteen (18)
years of age if required

11.

Agree to undertake a medical assessment by Councils medical practitioner if required and to be


medically fit and physically capable of meeting the requirements of the position

12.

Agree to Council conducting a Criminal History Check.
