1. COURSE DESCRIPTION
English for Specific Purposes III is a semestral discipline included as a part of the
Relaes Pblicas e Secretariado Executivo curriculum plan. The contents of this syllabus
correspond with a 60 hour (30 teaching sessions) subject which focuses on English for
secretaries, public relations or office related fields. This subject is designed to improve the
students skills in English with the emphasis on the main needs of the secretary, that is, to receive
and to give information efficiently and precisely.
It also designed to equip the students with the language competence in English that will be
needed by secretaries to perform communicative tasks at work. The syllabus will cover
relevant topics common to typical activities in the office, personal areas related to office
work, as well as to areas, such as socializing or receiving visitors and making them feel
comfortable. The general knowledge of the students in relation to social customs and attitudes
of the global business world will be also focused on. Different grammatical structures in
meaningful contexts will be emphasized as well.
2. COURSE OBJECTIVES
This syllabus is designed to fill the needs of the learners who want to undertake the
administrative tasks in English in the written and oral forms.
On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:

Develop the students level of accuracy in editing work and production of writing in
profession pieces of work.
Understand relevant grammar points and language structure.
Increase knowledge of job-related vocabulary and general vocabulary as well.
Develop habits of independent study.
Develop effective reading and clear thinking.
Expand the lexicon.
Identify the main idea and its major and minor support in academic articles.
3. TEACHING METHODOLOGY
Students will be expected to engage with a variety of academic tasks in class followed by
feedback and discussion. Active participation is encouraged at all times through pair-work and
group work. Particular emphasis will be placed on the oral and written skills. Students will also
be expected to do small-scale homework and research assignments so that they are in a position
to participate when they come to class.
4. COURSE POLICIES AND EXPECTATIONS
Since this class meets only twice a week, class attendance is mandatory. If you are missing a
class because of a medical emergency, please be advised that proper medical documentation is
required. For every additional missed class, your final grade will be lowered (e.g. 20 becomes
19, 19 becomes 18, etc.) Three late arrivals equal one absence. Tolerance of 10 minutes late.
Students are expected to complete assignments by due dates and bring them to class. For
each late assignments equals less two points. And, if you cant be in class, email your
assignment until 11: 58 pm.
Students are required to use the APA as their style manual for all the papers in this class.
Plagiarism will be not tolerated in this course. Remember that paraphrasing does not make
someone elses ideas yours. Always give credit to your sources, both in writing and during
your oral presentations in class. In your bibliography, you may only include the sources that
you cited within the paper. Any other sources that you might have consulted, but not used in
the paper, should not be added to the bibliography.
Please remember to switch off your cell phones during class time.
To enhance your presentations, feel free to use PowerPoint slides or other visuals. However,
do not include all of what you plan to include within your presentation in your slides. The
slides should contain key stats, specialized vocabulary, important quotes, and pertinent
visuals.
