GENERAL INFORMATION - SECONDARY
1. First thing we do on defense SWARM BL!!!
2. Two things that get us in more trouble than anything else: EYES and FEET!
3. Two main functions of secondary:
A.No LONG PASSES - Hold all passes to 25 yards or less.
B.Hold all runs to 15 yards or less.
4. Two concepts of coverage: ZONE or MAN.
5. Every coverage has a theory - KNOW IT!
6. Every coverage has a strength, weakness, and adjustment - KNOW IT!
A.Theory - An idea or plan of the way to do something. (2) A systematic statement of
principles involved.
B.Strength - The power to resist attack; force is measured in numbers.
C.Weakness - A weak point; fault.
D.Adjustment - To alter (change) so as to make fit. A means by which parts, as of a
machine, are adjusted to one another.
7. Never let the strength of a coverage be defeated; make them defeat its weakness.
8. 5 Base coverage theories:
A.4 Deep
B.3 Deep
C.2 Deep
D.Man
E.Combination (Man and Zone)
9. Main three fundamentals for secondary:
A.Tackling
B.Block Protection - stalk or crack
C.Catching the Ball
10. Individual Skills
Back Pedal - back zone, angle zone, turn zone, shuffle zone
Flop and Run
Stop Foot Drive Foot
Concentration (Ball on or off line)
11. Main seven coverage techniques for secondary: 1 /3 Deep; 1/4 Deep; 1 /2 Deep; Flat;
Curl; Hook; Man
A. Technique - The method of procedure or formal details to carry out a mechanical
operation. Technique is what happens when the ball is snapped. (It's either Right
or Wrong)
12. Three types of routes in football:
(1.2 seconds) QUICK 5-6 yard area (QB _ 3 Step Drop)
(1.7 seconds) MEDIUM 10-12 yard area (QB - 5 Step Drop)
(2.5 seconds) DEEP Deeper than 15 yards (QB - 5 or 7 Step Drop)
13. Teaching Formations: (Number of Backs) (Width) (Strength) (Adjustment)
(Personnel
Packages) 21,
12, 10 ect.
3 BACKS in backfield - teach as if 2 backs - same as PRO or TWINS
Third back is flanker. (Power I) (Stacked I)
2 BACKS in backfield - must be one of four formations:
A.PRO: TE - Flanker on same side (2 WR's to SAM LB)
B.TWINS: Flanker and split end on same side with 'l'E to other (2 WR's to
WILL LB)
C.Heavy: TE and X/Z on same side
D.JET: No 1'E / 3 Wide Receivers
1 BACK - In backfield, either:
Spread - 2 receivers to each side (11) - OPEN (10) - SOLO (12)
Trey - 3 receivers to one side with backside S.E. (3 WR's to SAM) (11) - TRIO (10) -
SOLO King (12) Trips - 3 receivers to one side with backside T.E. (3 WR's to WILL)
(11) - DOUBLES (12)
SHOT GUN - Is treated as one of the above, only QB is not under center
NO BACK - Empty
41 - 4 WR's to one side, 1 WR
away 32 - 3 WR's to one side, 2
WR's away
3

Secondary Concepts
3 Deep Zone

1.They must learn the backward run. (Back Pedal Tech - Weave)
2.They must learn when to Flop and Run Deep. (Cushion Rule, Race, Flop)
3.They must learn how to come back to the ball and catch it.
(Ball Drills) (Stop Foot - Drive Foot)
Stretch Drill - 2 Deep, 3 Deep or 4 Deep

2 Deep Zone

1.Flat Technique - Funnel - Force - Engage

2.Playing 1/2 the field

Zone Defense Principles

1.Ball "on line" or ball "off line"

2.Communication
3.Break on the front hand of the QB on his delivery
4.Someone outside the ball, leverage on FB. This is true in the passing or running
game.
5.In zone coverage, you must be able to overlap. We must be able to secure the
seams.
6.We are playing a Man in this zone (focus point).
7.Our drops depend on the receivers routes. We work on problem routes for each
coverage.
8.Everyone must break when the ball is thrown.
9.Running Plays
a.Primary Support - Contain
b.Secondary Support - Secondary contain after securing WR
c.Alley Filler - Inside out after securing #2 receiver
d.Pursuit Man - Insurance after securing #1 WR to his side

Man

1.Leverage on WR - Inside / Outside ect

2.Help or No Help
3.Number of people rushing QB

Tackling -
TACKLING

TWO MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS IN TACKLING

1.Courage
2.Desire

FUNDAIV ENTALS OF TACKLING

1.Hitting position - head up, eyes open, good b e .

2.Approach target under control - short choppy steps but
moving forward. Widen your base as you get near the ball
carrier.
3.Get close and hit through the target.
4.Club up - shoot the arms up to cause fumble and grab
cloth. Emphasize hip roll.
5.Accelerate the feet - on contact, pick up the knees and drive
target backwards (good hip roll).

SIDE TACKLE

1. Get head in front of the runner. Never have head behind ball
carrier. Hit high in numbers, drive through man. If he spins
inside, you just roll in with him.

GANG TACKLE

1.Take a shot at the ball carrier as long as he is standing up.

2.Punish the ball carrier and force fumbles.
3.Get everyone around the ball.

OPEN FIELD TACKLING

1.Tackle high - aim at the closet.

2.Take a side, force runner one way.
3.Not to punish but be sure - grab cloth.
4.Never break down.

PLAY YOUR DEFENSE TOUGH AND GANG TACKLE.

KEEP HEAD UP PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY.
T TACKLE
DRILLS
FORM TACKLE Purpose: To teach and perfect proper tackling technique
on straight-ahead tackling.
Equipment: Ball and 2 small cones or towels.
Procedure: Align the runner and tackler 3 or 4 yards
apart. At a desired speed, have the runner
A I A take a straight-ahead route to the tackler.
The tackler moves into position to make the
tackle. Eyes on ball level.
C.P.: Shoulders parallel, head up. Explode out of the
legs bringing the arms to lock up the runner.
Tackle through, accelerate feet on contact.
Hit with the top of the shoulder pad.

Purpose: To teach and perfect proper tackling technique

when making an angle tackle.
Equipment: Balls and 2 small cones or towels 4 yards apart
Procedure: Same as above except the runner will go to
the cone on the right or left.
C.P.: Open step, do not cross over, stay behind the
runner so he cannot cut back. Put your eyes on
the ball getting your face across the bow making
contact with your far shoulder in his ribs.
Explode out of legs while bringing your arms up
for securing man.

1 Purpose: To teach the tackler to attack the runner when

C. CUTBACK he cuts back into you.
Equipment: Ball and 4 cones in 5-yard square.
TACKLE
Procedure: Runner goes right or left, tackler shuffles
behind the runner; when the runner gets to
the cone, he cuts back to opposite corner.
The tackler who is in the runner's hip pocket
attacks him and makes an angle tackle.
C.P.: Stay behind the runner - same as above drill.

To teach the DB to come under control but not to break down. To teach the DB to take a side to give
the
D runner
OPEN FIELDone way to go. To teach open field tackling.
TACKLE
Purpose:
Equipment: Balls, cones, flat 4' dummy. Put cones 1 yard outside dummy.
Procedure: Runner is 5 yards from dummy; tackler is 7 yari from dummy. On command, have them run at
E the dummy. Tell tacklerpORm
to take either gap. Tell runner to run in either gap. I/runner
fills gap the DB is in; it is a form tackle; if he goes away, it is an angle tackle.

A A
C.P.: Not to cross over, do not break down, eyes on ball. Stay low, tackle high. Give ball carrier

STALK BLOCK PROTECTION

There are basic principles we must use to escape blocks. We must understand
leverage, explosion and separation.

The leverage phase is your pad under his pad. Your shoulder pad has to be lower
than the blocker's shoulder pad if you are going to be in a position to control. The
next phase is explosion and "come out of your legs" - a small six-inch explosion
form the hips to use the power in the lower body. The explosion is to stop the
charge of the blocker. You must explode to stop the blocker's charge. Next comes
separation to get off the blocker. You must shed the block, separate to get off the
block, and get to the ball.

The key point in taking on any block is first, where are your eyes looking what
position are your feet in? "Eyes and feet." ALWAYS look at the blocker - eyes -
have your inside foot up and your outside foot back.

When meeting the blocker, we are looking at his numbers and we deliver a blow
with our hands (face and hands) - LEVERAGE - be lower than the blocker. Our
face and shoulders might get involved somewhere there; GET YOUR HANDS
INSIDE. Grab the breast plates of the blocker's shoulder pads. Fingers should be
on the outside, with the thumbs up, and the hands inside. In order to control the
blocker, you want to control him from the inside.

Leverage is:

Our hands inside

Pad under pad, looking at the blocker.

THEN EXPLODE AND SEPARATE AND ESCAPE.

Separate chest to chest with the blocker, separate your body from the blocker's
body. When the hands are inside, bench press the blocker away from you; then
and only then can you escape from the blocker. Do not try to run to the ball until
the blocker's body is separated from you. Do not take your eyes away from the
blocker until your hands are inside and you are controlling him.
10

HOW TO CATCH THE BALL WHEN PLAYING ON DEFENSE

KEY: WATCH YOUR HANDS CATCH THE BALL - Explode eyes to ball.

1. The most important part of the flight of the ball is the last 18 inches.
"See the ball into your hands."

2. Catch the ball in front of you - do not trap the ball with the body
unless it is a last resort.

3. Go up and get the ball. Do not wait for it to come to you. Get your
hands out away from you so that you can "see" them contact the ball.

4. Catch the front tip of the ball - "soft" hands.

5. "STOP THE BALL" - This means a temporary pause after the ball is in
hands before bringing it to the tuck position.

6. "Head" and "Eyes" must follow the ball to the tuck position.

7. "TUCK THE BALL" - Back point in the bend of the elbow. Hand over
the front tip - tighten against the rib cage.

8. Tuck it away after you have it. Two hands on the ball when physical
contact is about to occur.

REVIEW

A.Watch hands catch ball explode eyes to ball. Put your chin on the ball!
B.Last 18 inches of flight
C.Catch in front

TIPS ON BREAK DISTANCE

1 CONFIDENCE - Believe in yourself - you can make the play!

2. KNOWLEDGE - Know what the offense likes to do - what type routes at

what depth.

3. EYES - Fine focus on the "throwing plane" of the shoulders. (Study the QB on
film, know his throwing motion.)

4. FEET - Try to point feet to the direction the QB is throwing. Cheat in that
direction.

5. KNEE BEND - Play with knees bent and pads down.

6. SETTLE - Don't be too deep on your drop. Settle when the QB sets if you
have no deep threat.

7. MAKE A DECISION - Know where the QB is looking and play in that

direction. Over play when coverage allows.

8. BREAK DISTANCE BEFORE THE THROW - Go before the throw of the QB.
When the OFF HANDS come off ball, - go - not on the ball, but on the
throwing motion.

9. EXPLODE - A fraction of a second will make the difference. Explode to the

ball. Strain, strain, and strain. Don't run with your arms out. Pump the arms.
Reach for the ball at the last instance.

10. COLLISION ANGLE - Take an angle to the ball that allows you to secure the
receiver. Step for the ball when you are sure of the interception.

ALWAYS REMEMBER You will not get every ball thrown into your
zone.

INTIMIDATION will be your most powerful ally

- great hitting!
