Models 3029 and 3039____________________________________________________________________General Description

4.3 Standard Features of the 3029/3039

Section 4 - General Description

Self-Diagnostic Control Design: The control systems

have been designed for easy troubleshooting by the customer. Not only does self-diagnosis decrease downtime,
but it also saves on service calls.

4.1 The Model 3029/3039 CO2 Incubator

The Model 3029/3039 incubator is designed to provide
continuous temperature, CO2, and humidity control in a
10 cu. ft., (285 liters), forced draft environment.
Separate solid state CH/P controllers provide direct digital setpoint control and readout of temperature in 0.1C
increments, CO2 (within 0.1%), and relative humidity
(within 1.0%). Setpoint and readout of all three parameters are presented on individual L.C.D. displays.

Positive Forced Air Convection: The air flow system

circulates air horizontally across the shelving in a leftto-right direction. This design assures uniform distribution of temperature and humidity, eliminates CO2 stratification, and assures rapid CO2 and RH recovery in the
event of loss. Conditioned air is evenly distributed at all
shelf levels under varying load conditions.

The temperature range of the chamber is approximately

4C above ambient to +60C. Temperature control is
+0.1C, and temperature uniformity is better than
+0.25C.

Cabinet Construction: The interior is polished stainless

steel and the exterior is constructed with heavy gauge
stainless steel and finished with polyurethane enamel.
Double wall construction is employed to maximize environmental stability and provide more economical operation.

The CO2 control system is also fully automatic, allowing

the operator a CO2 content range of 0% to 20% with a
control sensitivity of +0.1%.

Simplified Cleaning and Sterilization: Interior shelf supports and side panels are easily removable for cleaning
and sterilization. Side panels are bracket mounted and
the floor panel is connected with two screws to make the
humidity reservoir easily accessible.

Rated in a +21C/50 RH (relative humidity) ambient, a

humidity range of 50% to 96% is achieved at +60C
chamber temperature, and a range of 70% to 96% is
achieved at +37C chamber temperature.

Door Construction: A full view safety glass inner door

seals onto a peripheral silicone gasket. The outer door is
fitted with a peripheral magnetic gasket and seals
against the cabinet exterior. The door heater minimizes
the condensation on the inner door.

4.2 The CH/P Control System

The Forma CH/P control system for the 3029/3039 incubator provides independent control of temperature, CO2
percentage, and humidity percentage. The system has
been designed for easy troubleshooting and repair.

Shelving Design: Solid stainless steel shelves are

adjustable on 1" vertical center channel brackets. Six
shelves are standard equipment, and the incubator has a
24 shelf capacity to provide as much as 97 sq. ft. (9 sq.
meters) of available space.

The controls are easy to operate. Setpoints can be set by

simply pushing in the set knob for the desired parameter,
and turning to the coarse and fine adjustment to obtain
the chosen setpoint. Individual digital displays continually monitor all three parameters.

4.4 Auxiliary Equipment

An independent alarm system monitors deviations from

CO2 setpoint and gives audible and visual warnings if
CO2 content deviates from setpoint by more than 1%
(nominal). An alarm bypass switch deactivates the CO2
alarm system and a spring-loaded reset temporarily
silences the alarm warning signal.

Stacking Adapter: Required for vertical stacking of two

cabinets, the adapter includes a frame support and an air
blower system. It adds 5" (12.7 cm) to the total height
of two stacked units. (Forma Catalog Number 513028)
Additional Shelves: Additional stainless steel, non-perforated shelves may be purchased. Incubator capacity is
24 shelves. (Forma Catalog Number 503028)

An adjustable safety alarm furnishes audible and visual

warnings to the user in the event of an over-temperature
condition. The temp safety system then maintains the
temperature at the temp-safety setpoint.

Models 3029 and 3039___________________________________________________________________ Physical Installation

Section 5 Physical Installation

5.1 Leveling
Locate the incubator on a firm, level surface in an area of
minimum ambient temperature fluctuation. Level the cabinet
by using the four adjustable feet on the bottom of the unit. The
incubator MUST be level to ensure proper operation. Be sure
adequate clearance exists on the left side of the unit for access
to the water supply and electrical components.
Allow minimum clearance at the bottom of the cabinet.
If this area is blocked, the rated low limit for humidity will be
affected.

5.2 Attaching the Drain Lines

There are two drain lines on the incubator; the chamber
drain and the overflow drain.
To attach the chamber drain line:
1) Remove the valve that was shipped inside the unit.
2) Install the valve in place of the pipe plug in the drain on
the back of the unit.
3) Attach tubing to the valve and direct toward a drain.
To attach the overflow drain line:
1) The overflow drain should be rigid piped and trapped.
2) Fill the trap with water.

5.3 Connecting to Power

Connect the incubator to an adequate power source.
3029: 120VAC, 50/60Hz, 1 Phase, 6 FLA
3039: 220VAC, 50/60 Hz, 1 Phase, 3.5 FLA

5.4 Shelf Mounting

The shelves in the incubator have been designed to make
cleaning easier.
To mount the shelves,
1. Slide the rivets on the shelf channel into the keyhole on
the duct sheet (wall) of the chamber.
2. Slide the shelf into the channel.
The shelves are easily removed for cleaning by reversing
the above procedure.

Models 3029 and 3039_______________________________________________________________________ Power Module

Section 6 - Power Module

6.3 Door Ajar Indicating Light

6.1 Main Power Switch and Indicating Light

A Door Open indicating light is located on the power module. The red light activates when the outer door is open or has
not been securely closed.

The Main Power switch controls all electrical power to the

incubator. The switch must be ON for any of the incubator systems to be functional.

When the Door Ajar light is on, power to the heaters, blowers and the CO2 injection solenoid is interrupted. This feature
reduces gas usage and conserves energy.

The main power indicating light is activated whenever the

main power switch is in the ON position and the incubator is
connected to power.
6.2 Temperature Limit Safety Thermostat
The temp limit safety thermostat is designed to be set for a
temperature slightly higher than the operating setpoint temperature of the incubator. In the event of an overtemp condition, the
temp limit thermostat performs two functions:
Activates the audible alarm and overtemp indicator light.
Assumes control of power to immersion and air heaters.
The temp limit control is not directly calibrated. The numbers (0 to 10) on the dial are for reference only and do not correspond to any specific temperature.

6.4 Door Heaters and Controller

Two heaters, installed in the outer door, can be used when
there is condensation present on the inner glass door. The heater
control has to be adjusted to operate in conjunction with the
regular temperature control system. The door heater control
should never be set higher than necessary, or above 50. If set
higher, it could have an adverse effect on the temperature control of the incubator.
The control potentiometer for the door heaters is located
above the water bottle in the left side compartment.
Use the door heaters only if there is excess condensation
on the inner door.
a. To Set the Door Heaters

In the event of an overtemp condition, the alarm will

sound, the overtemp indicating light will activate and the incubator heaters will cycle under the control of the temp limit thermostat. The temperature will be maintained at the temp limit
setting until the source of the overtemp condition has been
determined and corrected.

1. Allow the incubator to stabilize at the desired operating

temperature.
2. Locate the heater adjustment.
3. Adjust the heater knob to 10. Allow the cabinet to stabilize overnight.

Note: The temp safety control should be checked quarterly to

ensure proper operation. To check the temp safety, turn the
temp safety knob down toward the setpoint until the alarm and
overtemp light are activated. Reset the temp safety after the
test.
a. Setting the Temp Limit Safety Thermostat
Once chamber temperature is stable, the temp limit safety
thermostat should be adjusted as follows:

4. If condensate is still present, adjust the door heater to

15. Continue to make adjustments in increments of 5,
allowing the cabinet to stabilize overnight with each
adjustment, until there is no condensate present.
It may be necessary to adjust the door heater after each
change in the operating temperature setting.
Note: Use of the door heater can slightly alter the temperature
in the chamber.

1. Turn the temp limit control knob slowly counterclockwise until the alarm sounds and the overtemp light is
activated.
2. Turn the control knob clockwise no more than two units
on the reference adjustment scale. The alarm should be
silenced and the overtemp light deactivated.
The temp limit thermostat control should now be set for a
few degrees above the control setpoint. If chamber temperature
should rise above setpoint to the temp limit control point, the
alarm system will be activated, and power to the heaters will be
disconnected.
Whenever the chamber temperature setpoint is changed,
the temp limit thermostat must also be reset to accommodate
the change.

Section 7 - Temperature Module

7.5 Temperature Calibration Check

7.1 Temperature Power Switch and Indicating Light

Note: To obtain the best results, all calibrations should be performed in the following order; temperature, humidity, CO2.

The temperature power switch controls electrical power to

the temperature module. The power indicating light on the
module is activated when both the main and temperature power
switches are in the ON position.

The CH/P temperature controller has been calibrated prior

to shipment of the unit and should not require recalibration for
most laboratory applications. A periodic check of temperature
control calibration, however, is recommended as a matter of
routine maintenance.

7.2 CH/P Temp Controller and LCD Temp Display

A check of temperature calibration is especially advisable

when the ambient temperature is less than 19C or more than
29C.

The LCD digital display on the temperature module continually shows actual chamber temperature in C, and the setpoint
temperature when the temp set button is pushed.

The calibration check should be performed with a calibrating thermometer of known accuracy, using the following
method.

The temperature setpoint is changed by pushing the temp

set knob in and rotating the knob to the desired temperature.
Fine adjustments can be made to the setpoint immediately after
the knob is released.

1. Place the calibrating thermometer inside the chamber,

away from the door and side panels.
2. Allow adequate time for the chamber temperature to stabilize. If the setpoint temperature has not been readjusted before the check, stabilization should be achieved
within 15 minutes. If the temperature setpoint has been
changed by 15C or more before the calibration check,
stabilization may require as long as 4 hours.

When the setpoint temperature is changed, the digital display will show the new setpoint for 5-15 seconds before reverting to continuous readout of actual chamber temperature.
Since the temperature sensor is located in the conditioning
plenum, small changes in setpoint may result in the desired
temperature being reached in less then 20 seconds. In such
cases, the digital display will not indicate the progressive temperature change as actual temperature moves toward setpoint.
Rather, only the new setpoint will be displayed.

3. Check to see if the temperature indicated by the digital

display agrees with the temperature shown by the thermometer in the chamber.
If the temperature controller requires recalibration, use the
procedure in Section 7.6.

7.3 Heat Indicator Light

7.6 Temperature Calibration Procedure

The Heat indicator light activates when the temperature

controller calls for more heat in the chamber.

Temperature calibration should be performed following the

replacement of either the temperature module or the temperature probe.

7.4 Setting the Temperature Control

A high quality, calibrating thermometer of known accuracy

is required for this procedure. Place the thermometer near the
center of the incubator chamber and allow the chamber temperature to stabilize. Refer to Section 7.5.

To set the temperature control, push in on the temp set

knob and dial to the desired setpoint. Fine adjustments can be
made immediately after releasing the knob.

1. Turn off power to the temperature module. Pull the module out and snap it onto the extender module. Re-install
the module and turn the power on.

If the last digit on the display flickers after the chamber

temperature has stabilized, a slight readjustment of the setpoint,
using the fine adjustment, will correct the problem.

2. Adjust switch S2 to position 7. See diagram in Section

11.2 for the switch location.
3. Adjust the zero potentiometer on the side of the module
until the reading on the digital display corresponds to
the thermometer reading.
4. Turn switch S2 back to 0.

Models 3029 and 3039_____________________________________________________________________ Humidity Module

Section 8 - Humidity Module

Remove the floor section from the incubator. Fill the floor
pan with 1-1/2 gallons of water. This amount of water should
almost fill the floor pan, but still be below the point where the
float level is activated.

8.1 Humidity Power Switch and Indicating Light

Open the water bottle compartment on the left side of the

cabinet and fill the bottle with distilled or demineralized water.

The humidity power switch controls electrical power to the

humidity system. The power indicating light on the module is
activated when both the main and humidity power switches are
in the ON position.

Allow the chamber to fill with water until the float level is
activated and the water ceases to flow. Let the water level stabilize overnight. Check the water level. It should be 1/8 to 3/8
inches from the top of the overflow.

8.2 CH/P Humidity Controller and Digital Display

If the water level in the floor pan is too high or too low, the
float level control needs to be adjusted. Do this by adjusting
the thumbscrew at the base of the float shaft and, if necessary,
tilting the float mounting bracket.

The LCD digital display on the humidity module continually shows the percent of humidity (RH) and the setpoint when
the RH set button is pushed.
The RH setpoint is changed by holding the RH set knob in
and rotating the knob to the desired percentage. Fine adjustments can be made to the setpoint immediately after the knob is
released.

8.6 Humidity Reservoir and Probe Check

The humidity reservoir water level should be checked periodically to ensure proper humidification levels in the chamber.
The humidity reservoir is reached by removing the floor panel.

When the setpoint is changed, the digital display will show

the new setpoint for 5-15 seconds before reverting to continuous readout of the actual chamber RH.

Be sure to disconnect power before removing the floor panel.

8.3 Humidity Indicating Light

Make sure that the humidity probe tip is positioned so that

the tip extends 1/8 to 1/16 below the float.

The humidity indicating light activates when the humidity

controller calls for greater humidity percentage in the chamber.

The chamber reservoir water level should be maintained at

1/8 to 3/8 below the overflow level as determined by the
position of the 90 elbow located in the rear left corner of the
reservoir.

8.4 Setting the Humidity

Put the humidity power switch in the ON position. Push in
on the RH% knob and rotate the knob to the desired humidity
setpoint percentage as indicated on the display.

8.7 Humidity Probe Placement

When running low humidity in the incubator, the excess

water in the cabinet must be eliminated. The incubator should
be free of all condensate in the chamber and under the floor
panel. The humidity reservoir should be at a normal operating
level.

The humidity probe must be properly positioned for the incubator to perform optimally in registering humidity changes.
To adjust the humidity probe, it is necessary to remove the
chamber floor panel. The floor panel is connected by screws in
the front corners of the chamber.

Excess water may be eliminated by leaving the chamber

door ajar for approximately one hour. Due to the door safety
switch, the fan and heater will not operate when the door is
open.

Be sure to disconnect power before removing the floor panel.

8.5 Setting Up the Humidification System

The humidity probe is attached to the float in the front of

the water reservoir. Approximately 1/8 to 1/16 of the probe
tip should extend below the water.

To ensure continuous satisfactory operation of the incubator, it is recommended that only distilled water or demineralized
water be used in the reservoir. In areas where tap water contains large amounts of impurities, the use of distilled water is
especially recommended.

8-1

Models 3029 and 3039____________________________________________________________________ Humidity Module

8.8 Humidity Calibration Check and Procedure

Humidity calibration should be performed following the
replacement of the humidity module or the humidity probe.
A hygrometer is required for this procedure. It should be
placed inside the chamber, and the chamber should be permitted
to stabilize for approximately 4 hours. During this time, the
inner door should not be opened. If the hygrometer reading differs from the digital display, recalibration is necessary.
1. Turn off power to the humidity module. Pull the module
out and snap it into the extender card. Turn the power
back on.
3. Adjust switch S2 to position 1. See diagram in Section
11.3 for the switch location.
4. Turn the zero adjustment on the side of the module until
the reading on the digital display agrees with the
hygrometer reading.
5. Turn switch S2 back to 0.
6. Allow time for the chamber to stabilize. Compare the
hygrometer reading with the reading on the digital display. When the two readings agree, the system is calibrated.

8-2

Models 3029 and 3039______________________________________________________________________ Carbon Dioxide

Section 9 - Carbon Dioxide

9.6 CO2 Inject Light

The CO2 Inject light is activated whenever there is a
demand for CO2 to meet the setpoint percentage requirements.
Since the CO2 inject light is independent of the CO2 alarm, it
will continue to signal a need for CO2 when the CO2 alarm is
set to either the Defeat or Silence position.

9.1 CO2 Power Switch and Indicating Light

The CO2 power switch controls electrical power to the CO2
system. The power indicating light on the module is activated
when both the main and CO2 power switches are in the ON
position.

9.7 Sample Port

A sample port is located on the control panel for checking
the CO2 percentage by independent means, such as with a
Fyrite or similar instrument.

9.2 CH/P CO2 Controller and Digital Display

The LCD digital display on the CO2 module continually
shows the percent of CO2 and the setpoint when the CO2 set
knob is pushed.

To prevent CO2 loss, the sample port should be capped when

not in use.

The CO2 setpoint is changed by pushing the CO2 set knob

in and rotating the knob until the desired percentage is indicated on the display. Fine adjustments can be made to the setpoint
immediately after the knob is released.

9.8 Sealing the Cabinet

When the setpoint is changed, the digital display will show

the new setpoint for 5-15 seconds before reverting to continuous readout of actual percent CO2.

The audible CO2 alarm and alarm indicating light activate

when the percentage of CO2 deviates from setpoint by 1%
(nominal), or the CO2 set knob is pushed in..

When using CO2, the cabinet must be sealed before the unit
is turned on. Check to ensure that the sample port is capped.
Disconnect power to the unit and open the electrical access
panel on the left side of the incubator. Check the Permagum
seals on the lower right. Also check the orange plug in the
upper left. If these openings are not sealed, CO2 will be drained
from the cabinet and temperature and humidity will not stabilize properly.

9.4 Alarm Silence Push Button

9.9 CO2 Standardization Adjustment

The alarm silence button is located on the front of the CO2

module. When pushed, it will silence the CO2 alarm, and deenergize the alarm light. The alarm will remain deactivated
until another alarm condition causes it to sound.

The CO2 calibration adjustment is located to the right of

the CO2 set knob. This adjustment is used for standardizing the
CO2 controller for specific ambient conditions.

9.3 Audible CO2 Alarm and Alarm Indicating Light

See Sections 9.12 and 9.13 for further information about

standardizing the controller.

9.5 Alarm Disable Switch

9.10 Connecting the CO2 Source
The alarm disable switch is located on the side of the CO2
module. It is necessary to pull the CO2 module out slightly to
allow access to the switch.

A main supply of liquid CO2, supplied from tanks without

siphon tubes, will provide for the most economical use of CO2.
It is also recommended that a two-stage pressure regulator, with
two indicating gauges, be installed at the supply cylinder outlet.

When in the Defeat position, the switch completely disables the CO2 alarm. The CO2 alarm and the alarm light cannot
be activated when the switch is in this position.

Connect the CO2 supply to the 1/4 O.D. CO2 inlet located
on the back of the cabinet (labeled CO2). The CO2 supply may
be connected either with 1/4 O.D. metal tubing directly from
the supply cylinder(s), or with plastic tubing. A piece of 1/4
O.D. copper tubing is supplied with the unit to allow for connection of plastic tubing from the supply cylinder.

When the switch is in the Normal position, the alarm systems will be operative, and can be silenced by the alarm silence
push button.

9-1

Models 3029 and 3039_______________________________________________________________________Carbon Dioxide

To connect the CO2 supply, insert the 1/4 O.D. metal tubing (or the 1/4 O.D. copper tubing piece supplied with the unit
if plastic tubing is used) from the source into the CO2 compression fitting, and tighten the nut one-and-a-quarter turn. As the
nut is tightened, the ferrule (conical shaped ring) inside the nut
exerts pressure on the tubing to hold it firmly in place. (If plastic tubing is used, the tubing should be firmly clamped to the
copper tubing piece to ensure a leakproof seal.)

To check the standardization, allow chamber temperature

and humidity to stabilize, then sample the CO2 content using
the measuring device and compare the test instrument reading
with the incubator display. Two samples should be taken consecutively to allow for any variation in temperature and humidity. If the readout does not match the test instrument, perform
one of the standardization procedures in Section 9.13.
9.13 Standardization Procedure

The CO2 source must be regulated at a pressure level of 4 to 5

PSIG. Higher pressure levels may damage CO2 filter system.

a. Procedure A (CO2 Tester Not Required)

1. Disconnect CO2 at source (if connected) and fan the
door about 10 times to eliminate CO2 from chamber.

9.11 Setting the CO2 Content

2. Allow the chamber temperature and humidity to stabilize for at least 4 hours. Do not open door during stabilization.

The following conditions must be satisfied before the CO2

percentage can be set:

3. Locate the CO2 standardization adjustment located on

the control panel.

1. The temperature and humidity in the chamber must be

allowed to stabilize for 6-8 hours or overnight, with the
outer door closed. Since the CO2 sensor is affected by
changes in density and water content of the air, the incubator must be adjusted for site conditions of temperature
and humidity.

4. Using a jewelers screwdriver, turn the standardization

adjustment slowly counterclockwise until the digital display reads 00.0%. Allow one minute for stabilization.
The unit is now standardized and can be adjusted to the
desired CO2 operating setpoint.

2. Check the CO2 control standardization (Section 9.12).

Although all units are standardized at the factory before
shipment, the CO2 control standardization may not be
correct for the ambient conditions in which the incubator
is to be used. A check is therefore mandatory to ensure
proper operation of the CO2 system. Read Section 9.12
and 9.13 before using the incubator with CO2.

b. Procedure B (CO2 Tester Required)

1. Disconnect CO2 at source (if connected) and fan the
door about 10 times to eliminate CO2 from chamber.
2. Allow the chamber temperature and humidity to stabilize for at least 4 hours. Do not open door during stabilization.

To set the CO2 percentage, turn the CO2 power switch ON.
Depress the CO2 set knob and rotate the knob until the desired
percentage is indicated on the digital display.

3. Locate the CO2 standardization adjustment located on

the control panel.

9.12 CO2 Standardization Check

4. Using a jewelers screwdriver, turn the standardization

adjustment slowly counterclockwise until the digital display reads 00.0%. Allow one minute for stabilization.

Check standardization with every adjustment of the temperature setpoint and/or change of the humidity setting.

5. Connect the CO2 source and set the CO2 controller for
the desired setpoint and allow approximately 30 minutes
for stabilization.

The check procedure requires the use of a Fyrite CO2 tester

or similar measuring device. However, it is possible to standardize the control without using a CO2 test instrument. (See
Procedure A, Section 9.13.)

6. Using the CO2 tester, read the actual CO2 percentage in

the chamber.
7. Turn the CO2 setpoint counterclockwise to a low setting
to prevent CO2 from being injected into the chamber.

Both procedures outlined in Section 9.13 should be carefully read and understood before the unit is put into regular operation with CO2.

8. Turn the CO2 standardization adjustment until the digital

display readout agrees with the reading given by the
CO2 tester.

9-2

9. Turn the setpoint to the normal operating setpoint and

allow time for the CO2 to stabilize. Retest the actual CO2
content. If it differs from the digital display, repeat Steps
6 through 9.

Models 3029 and 3039_______________________________________________________________________Carbon Dioxide

9.14 CO2 Calibration Check and Procedure

CO2 calibration should be performed following the replacement of the CO2 module or the CO2 sensor.
A Fyrite or similar CO2 test device is required for this procedure. The procedure must be followed carefully to ensure
proper calibration of the CO2 controller. Test the CO2 content
with the test instrument. If the reading differs from the reading
on the digital display, recalibration is necessary.
1. Disconnect the CO2 source and eliminate the CO2 from
chamber by fanning the door 10 times.
2. Close the doors and allow sufficient time for the temperature and humidity in the chamber to stabilize.
Stabilization may take up to 4 hours. Do not open the
door during the stabilization period.
3. Turn off power to the CO2 module. Pull the module out
and snap it into the extender card. Re-install the module
and turn the power back on.
4. Adjust both the coarse and fine adjustments on the CO2
setpot fully counterclockwise.
5. Wait 60 seconds and change the switch S2 to position 1.
Turn the current adjustment on the side of the module
until the display reads 07.0. Return switch S2 to 0.
6. Turn the calibration adjustment on the front panel until
the display reads 00.00.
6. Adjust the CO2 setpoint to 5%.
7. Reconnect or turn on the CO2 supply to the chamber and
allow time for the system to stabilize. In most cases, 30
minutes should be sufficient.
8. Using the test instrument, sample the actual CO2 level in
the chamber. Note the reading on the digital display.
9. To prevent additional CO2 from entering the chamber,
turn the CO2 setpoint knob fully counterclockwise.
10. Adjust the span pot on the CO2 module until the reading
on the digital display agrees with the test instrument
reading.
Note: This calibration should be suitable for most laboratory
applications. If more precise calibration is necessary, this procedure should be repeated.

9-3

Models 3029 and 3039_________________________________________________________________Preventive Maintenance

The use of volatiles or aromatics is not recommended for

cleaning cabinet interiors. Residues could cause contamination of the cabinet environment.

Section 10 - Preventive Maintenance

10.1 Cleaning

General Instructions

The chamber interior should be cleaned with alcohol and/or

soap and water. The interior panels should be disinfected with a
general-use laboratory disinfectant. Information about disinfectants recommended by Forma Scientific is included as a supplement at the end of the manual.

Use the mildest cleaning procedure that will do the job

effectively. To ensure maximum effectiveness and to avoid marring the surface, always rub in the direction of the finish polish
lines. Be sure to rinse the surface thoroughly after each cleaning operation. To avoid water marks, wipe the surface dry.

The cabinet exterior may be cleaned with soap and water,

or any non-abrasive commercial spray cleaner.

a. Passivation Procedure for Surface

Contamination Removal

See Section 10.2 for a sterilization procedure.

Note: Safety requires use of rubber gloves and eye protection.

Equipment required:

10.2 Sterilization

1. Nitric acid 70 to 80 percent

The incubator can be easily sterilized in approximately 30

minutes. Full strength Amphl Spray or O-Syl disinfectant in 1%
or 3% solutions (dilute with sterile distilled water) is recommended.

2. Non-metallic mixing container at least 2 qt. capacity

(2) required
3. Acid brush
4. Rubber gloves

Remove the shelves, interior duct sheets and bottom from

the incubator and set them aside. Spray all interior surfaces.
Sponge down all surfaces to remove any foreign matter, and
rinse the surfaces at least twice with distilled water.

5. Goggles
6. Bicarbonate of soda
1) Procedure A - Vertical surfaces

Be sure that the door gasket is also thoroughly cleaned. It

may be necessary to lift up the edge of the gasket to clean it
thoroughly. Clean the interior of the glass door with the solution, and rinse it with distilled water. The drip trough should be
wiped out and carefully rinsed.

1. Dilute acid 4 to 1 with water (add acid to water slowly).

2. With acid brush, apply nitric acid half strength to areas
showing any signs of oxidation.
3. Leave acid on surface for 30 to 60 minutes depending
upon severity of blemish.

Run some of the solution through the drain lines.

If desired, all surfaces can then be rubbed or sprayed with
70% alcohol. Be sure to drain and sponge all solution from the
incubator. All shelves, duct sheets, and removable components
can be washed down with the same solution before they are
returned to the incubator.

4. Prepare a solution of sodium bicarbonate and water

(approximately 4 oz. per quart).
5. With cloth dipped in sodium bicarbonate solution, rinse
acid-treated surfaces to neutralize acid.
6. Final rinse with plain water.

Do not direct a hard spray of the solution at the temperature

sensor, or rub it directly. To do so could bend the sensor wire.
Do not use strong alkaline or caustic agents. Stainless steel is
corrosion-resistant, not corrosion-proof.

2) Procedure B - Horizontal surfaces (tank bottoms, etc.)

1. Dilute acid 4 to 1 with water (add acid to water slowly).
2. Pour acid until surface is just covered.
3. Let acid stand for 30 to 60 minutes depending upon
severity of blemish. (More time may be required if weld
seams on tank are affected.)

10.3 Cleaning Stainless Steel

The continued cleanliness of the stainless steel utilized in
these incubators has a direct effect on the appearance and operation of the unit.
The following pages are a guide to be used for specific
cleaning problems.
10-1

Models 3029 and 3039________________________________________________________________Preventive Maintenance

4. Remove acid.
5. Prepare a solution of sodium bicarbonate and water
(approximately 4 oz. per quart). Pour solution until surface is just covered and let stand for 15 minutes.
6. Remove this solution and finally rinse with plain water.
Note: Rusting of 300 Series stainless steel is purely a surface
effect and can be caused by iron carbide precipitation at joints
heated by welding or contact with carbon steel chips, tools, etc.
Surface treatment will remove this contamination.

11.4 CO2 System Troubleshooting Overview

a. General Instructions
Follow the instructions on the flow chart to diagnose problems with the CO2 controller. For this diagnostic aid to be effective, all checks must be made in the sequence indicated by the
flow chart and all data must be carefully recorded.
b. Stabilizing the Cabinet
Prior to beginning the procedure, shut the cabinet door and
set the temperature and humidity at normal operating levels.
The temperature and humidity should be stabilized by Step #12
of the procedure.
c. CO2 System Troubleshooting Procedure
Turn the CO2 module off and remove the CO2 and logo
modules. Transfer the extender card from the logo module to
the CO2 module slot. Snap the extender card into the connector.
Check the alignment. Add the CO2 module to the extender and
check the alignment.
Do not plug the module in upside-down. To do so will damage
the unit.
General Notes
The first eleven steps of the procedure can be completed
with the temperature and humidity in an unstable condition.
The first fifteen steps can be performed with the CO2
turned off.
Before removing the control module from the unit, turn the
power to the module off.
At various times in this procedure, the CO2 alarm may
sound. Unless otherwise noted, the alarms may be silenced
by pressing the alarm silence button.
Unless otherwise noted in the procedure, the module
referred to is the CO2 module and the switches referred to
are located on the CO2 module.
Switch locations for the CO2 module are labeled on the
module diagram.
When rotating set knob fully in one direction, it will be
necessary to push the knob in at intervals to get the knob to
rotate completely.
Conditions in the chamber are stable when the temp and
RH lights are cycling at a fast regular rate.
Less than 4 hours is insufficient time for recalibration but
adequate for this test.
Recalibration of any of the controls may be necessary if
replacement is required.
