Jos Rizal (film) First Half Summary

1891, in Ghent, Belgium, Jos Rizal aims to reveal and emblaze the patriotism
of his countrymen, the Filipinos, through his written works. Scenes shown thereafter
were what supposedly was happening inside the Catholic Church currently ran by
the foreign friars. A familiar character was then introduced, Crisostomo Ibarra, who
is a depiction and personification of what Rizal has in his heart, basically, Rizal
made Crisostomo Ibarra in his likeness.
1895, in the Philippines, the Katipunan people were rejoicing of what Rizal
has done, by sparking their consciousness. They shouted, Long live Dr. Jos Rizal.
1896, inside the Malacaang Palace, the Spaniards have created a scheme of
advancing to the province of Bulacan in order to eliminate rebellion. Monsignor
Nozalea, the 24th and last Spanish archbishop, wants Jos Rizal eliminated as well
.
Bonifacio, the Guerrilla leader of Katipunan, told his fellowmen to tear up
their cedulas to terminate their affiliation to the Spaniards.
Jos Rizals brother Paciano was brutally tortured and interrogated by the
Spaniards in order to speak up about his brothers attachment and role on the
rebellion. Paciano struggled and didnt give away any information regarding his
brother and his acts.
1896, inside the Rizal Residence in Tondo, Manila, the family is in panic and
started packing, all men of the family were bound to leave the house in order to
escape from the threat of the authority, all that was left inside the residence were
the women.
November 1896, in Fort Santiago, Jos Rizal was interrogated and was asked
about his affiliations with the Katipunan, specifically with Bonifacio, its founder. Rizal
was then accused as a traitor and is likened to the three Filipino priests also
accused of treachery. Looking back in time, Rizal stated that his brother Paciano was
the one who sparked his consciousness and the one who opened his eyes to the
injustices and discrimination in the Philippines. Paciano knew Father Burgos as he
was previously affiliated with him, and he also witnessed the execution of the
priests.

1869, in Calamba, Laguna, still a child, Jos Rizal or Pepe, his mother was
wrongfully arrested for trying to poison her sister-in-law, resulting in her
incarceration for two years. Aside from the latter, Pepes family had several
problems and disputes with the friars.

Pepe is bound to be sent to school, and was told by his brother to go by

another name and not use their family name Mercado as it might result to the
friars holding it against him. During his studies, though hes short and was bullied
for it, he was greatly praised for his outstanding and consistent performance in
school.
1896, Luis Taviel de Andrade was appointed to be Jos Rizals defense
council. Taviel showed signs of slight exasperation and displeasure towards Rizal.
1878, during Pepes class in the University of Saint Thomas, the teacher had
a Spanish student and a Filipino student stand in front next to each other, then
notes fascination about the difference between the Spanish student and the Filipino
student, which he then calls that the Spanish student was superior than the Filipino
student. Displeased, Pepe stood up and said that if height is so much of importance
in determining such, then why many of Spains colonies gained their independence
from Spain. The teacher was annoyed and sent him out of the class.
1896, Rizals novels were banned in the Philippines. Crisostomo Ibarra,
holding a knife, has threated to kill Father Damaso, a local priest, for persecuting
and bearing false witness against his father. Ibarras father died in prison, and then
Damaso had the body dug up from its grave and thrown into the river. Ibarra was in
agony about the latter, also saying that he had already lost his wife, child and
family.
Rizal speaks with his fellow Filipino students about Philippine independence.
The Spanish students then came in and called out to them as monkeys, creating a
feud. In the midst of the feud, Rizal was hit in the head by a thrown rock. He was
brought to his Uncle Antonios house for his uncle to patch up his wounds, he was
then accompanied by his cousin Leonor who sat beside him and had a little talk with
him. Both showed signs of attraction to each other but insisted on what may be the
possible consequences if they were found, but Rizal seems persistent.
Rizal was sent to Europe by his brother to study medicine and to freely write
about the Philippines. 1884, in Madrid, a group of Filipino students have gathered to
discuss about the current situation of their country. Jos Rizal speaks for
independence, some of his colleagues agreed with him and some didnt.

In the Philippines, the authorities had a search warrant up against the mayor.
He was then arrested for the possession of one of Rizals books. The friars then
burned the confiscated works of Rizal. In Rizals novel, the character Crisostomo
Ibarra was called a traitor as he was accused of being involved in a violent revolt.
He was now disgraced in the publics eye.
January 1891, in Madrid, the group of Filipino students decided to put Del
Pilar in a position, as a President. Jos Rizal was irked by the choice of his fellow
