School canteens have a unique role. Ensuring the canteen provides healthy foods
can help model and reinforce healthy eating messages that are given in the
classroom, and enable healthy eating behaviours to be practiced.
Therefore, a healthy canteen aims to:
provide a wide range of tasty, healthy and cheap foods that are consistent
with the dietary recommendations:
provide foods that are consistent with the healthy eating messages being

Foods to LIMIT in a healthy canteen

canteen menu. They include:
Chocolate, lollies
Deep fried foods e.g., hot chips
Fatty meats e.g., sausages, fritz
Doughnuts, cakes, biscuits
Etc
Food advertising and the canteen
Children are exposed to hundreds of television food advertisements every week.
The majority of these advertisements are for foods that are high in fat, sugar or
salt or low in fibre. Encouraging children to become critical thinkers about
television food advertising is one way to address the issue of food advertising in
the school setting.
Moving towards a heathier canteen requires a strong commitment to the
promotion of healthy eating. With dedication and support from the whole school
community, a healthy canteen can provide a range of heathy food choices that

are consistent with the messages being taught in the classroom about healthy
eating and television food advertising.
