The De La Salle University – College of Law (DLSU-COL) hosted its first ever Diokno Debate Cup by Lasallian Advocate
on 3 April 2016 at Miguel Hall in De La Salle University – Manila. Following an Asian Parliamentary
Debate format, debate teams underwent two rounds of eliminations and four teams have broken BAHAY…BABOY…BAGYO

The debate competition was participated by ten teams across six different schools namely, San Beda

The debate is “apt for the times” according to adjudicator Atty. Jesus Falcis. He felt excited and jovial Rico’s The Bandwagon: A gift:

that discourse in the human rights discussed in the debates matched the advocacy of the College.

This efficiency was credited to the system employed by the organizations behind the event wherein
before the oral adjudication was given, the ushers gathered the score sheets and gave it to the
master tabulator, as explained by LAMDES President Karla Rose Gutierrez.

She said that, “the atmosphere was light and casual because even the judges were people we
already have a rapport with because we interact with them in other debates. Atty. Dino De Leon was
also a Lasallian debater all throughout.” Participants felt comfortable, she later added. “The Animo
was felt because all the organizations made sure that everyone was accommodated. It was an effort
of the DLSU-College of Law as a whole.”

The debate cup sought to showcase the various dimensions of human rights law by seeing it in a
value judgment and policy debate. The cup was held in commemoration of one of the country’s
brightest legal luminaries, the late Jose W. Diokno.

Overall, the Diokno Debate Cup was a success. It is a collaborative project of the DLSU Law Moot
and Debate Society, the Law Student Government, Paralegal Volunteers Organization, International
Law Society and Juan De La Salle.

The four teams that reached the semi-finals are San Beda College of Law, De La Salle University
College of Law Teams A and B, and Lyceum College of Law Team B. DLSU-COL Team A is
composed of Michelle Laureta, Dan Ramos, and Angelo Tiglao; while Team B is composed of Alice
dela Cruz, Jon de Guia, and Donna Santy.

After the dust has settled, only DLSU-COL Team A and San Beda College of Law remained. These
teams will square off in the finals. According to Julia Pineda, one of the organizers of the event, the
Diokno Debate Cup finals will be held on 22 April 2016, at the Learning Commons, Henry Sy Sr. Hall,
in De La Salle University – Manila.
