Tell Mayor Rawlings-Blake, Council President Jack Young and City Council members not to balance the budget on the
backs of hardworking Baltimore families. We just can’t afford to pay more at checkout.

Honor Mothers, Wherever

You Find Them
Growing up, especially as an early teenager, I had a mantra I used to say to myself, in my
room at night or while I walked to and from school – “I have the best mother in the world.”
I used to repeat it, over and over again, because as a teenager, I was conflicted about this. I
could see all the things that made my mom a great mom – she listened to me, she tolerated and
answered my questions, she made sure I had every opportunity and thing that was worthwhile,
she let me be responsible, she watched over me when I was sick, she went without to make
sure I had everything I needed, she would give me the last bite of her sandwich and the last $10
in her wallet, she knew not only who I was but who I could be – but my teenage mind tried
to focus on the things I didn’t like. I wanted to be like other youth and rebel against the reins
of parental oppression, but I wasn’t totally invested in that course of action. So I spent many
a day, talking to the better angel on my shoulder, consciously reminding myself that my mom
was the greatest.
To honor her, at the time, I tried to follow her rules and always truthfully answered
any question she asked. Now I honor the things she did by being the best mother I can,
incorporating the things she taught me, through her example, as I raise my own child.
While each year I get older, I have to confess, I’m not quite old enough to qualify as a
wise old sage. But in my many years I’ve come to realize that we’re children for a very small
portion of our lives. That time should be spent learning valuable life lessons, having carefree
fun and making cherished memories.
Children get to do that when they have good mothers, the mothers they deserve. Thankfully,
there are mothers like that everywhere, even though the ones we most often hear about on the
news are the other kind. acts we feel the love and, I hope, are moved to pass it on to our children and to others.
