What exactly IS a “hybrid course”? This workshop will explore the nature of combining face-to-
face instruction with more “high tech” and computer-assisted teaching methods. A taxonomy of
online involved will be proposed for consideration. Faculty who have taught hybrid courses and
strongly urged to bring with them their experiences and ideas. Those who are considering
teaching such a course are asked to bring LOTS of questions as we pool our knowledge and
experience to come up with some viable models.

Choosing a Textbook in the Digital Age 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM

Traditionally, text-books have been the reference source for the majority of the content presented
in a given disciplinary course. However, increasingly “texts” include more full-color pages with
images, figures and photos than they do black-and-white written-word. The text might also have
several different indexing features including a short and long table of contents, glossary, chapter
contents and a traditional key-word index. Frequently, a number of supplementary items, such as
study guides, case study booklets, and base-level entry knowledge pamphlets can be packaged
with the text. For lab-based classes, lab guidelines can be packaged into a “tailored” lab manual

for that particular class, or a pre-printed lab manual can be included with the text. Most texts are
also now supported by a website with a suite of online materials for students and additional
presentation materials for instructors. Some also offer a complete Blackboard plug-in, or the
option of using the publisher‟s own student registration website to create an online component, or
completely online course in that discipline.

Given all these options, choosing which text to adopt, especially for multi-section courses, can be
a daunting task. Pressure comes from students, peers, administrators and the publishing
companies themselves to adopt “the right one.” The adoption decision can carry a $200-plus
buying decision for the student, and affect the lives and livelihoods of many others. Join the
Anatomy and Physiology faculty from Prescott and Verde campuses as they look at several
different aspects of text adoption using, as a case study, their own discussions about text-book
options for the 30-plus yearly Anatomy and Physiology that run on the two campuses. Topics to
be covered will include:
• Content of the text itself
• Publisher supplementary material and websites
• Renting texts and e-texts
• Going “text-less” or the “any-text” option

Stress Reduction & Relaxation Techniques 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM

Probably as important as our ability to provide our students and clients with expertise is our need
to release our stress levels and incorporate the highly therapeutic "Relaxation Response", where
the systems of the body, especially the nervous system, release accumulated levels of stress and
the immune system responds with a favorable increase of effectiveness.

Sound vibrations penetrate the body down to the cellular level, providing a soothing "molecular"
massage. Color vibrations have a therapeutic effect on the Pineal gland, supporting the release of
melatonin and serotonin, which are extremely important for the health of the Endocrine system.

This workshop will provide hands on and experiential techniques for relaxation and stress relief
using ancient and modern acoustic sound generators: didgeridoo, crystal singing bowls, Tibetan
bowls, drums, chanting & toning, color projections and imagery.

Rian McGonigal has been working with therapeutic sound and color therapies since 1987. He has
developed and directed Vibrational Therapy programs for hospitals, clinics, medical and Holistic
