Comets move around the sun in highly elliptical orbits. The gravitational
force on the comet due to the sun is not normal to the comets velocity in
general. Yet the work done by the gravitational force over every complete
orbit of the comet is zero. Why?
(c) An artificial satellite orbiting the earth in very thin atmosphere loses its
energy gradually due to dissipation against atmospheric resistance,
however small. Why then does its speed increase progressively as it comes
closer and closer to the earth?
State the principle of conservation of energy. Define kinetic and potential energy.
Prove it for the freely falling body.
Two blocks of masses m1, m2 are connected by light spring on a smooth
horizontal surface. The two masses are pulled apart and then released. Prove that
the ratio of their acceleration is inversely proportional to their masses.
Explain potential energy with example. Derive an expression for the potential
energy stored in a system of a block attached to a mass-less spring, when the
block is pulled from its equilibrium position.
Show that force of spring in spring mass system is conservative. (Take friction
between the surface and mass as zero.)
a. Plot the variation of K, V and E.
b. Why you can consider E= V + K.
c. At what point K and V becomes equal.
State and prove the work energy principle for variable force.
A body of mass 1.0 kg initially at rest is moved by a horizontal force of 0.5 N on a
smooth frictionless table. Calculate the work done by the force in 10 seconds and
show that this work done is equal to the change in kinetic energy of the body.
A girl of mass 40 kg climbs a rope 6m long at constant speed in 15 seconds. What
power she expands during the climb?
What are the two types of collision? Derive an expression to calculate the final
velocity of two bodies undergoing one dimensional elastic collision. Discuss the
special cases.
An object of mass 0.4kg moving with a velocity of 4m/s collides with another
object of mass 0.6kg moving in same direction with a velocity of 2m/s. If the
collision is perfectly inelastic, what is the loss of K.E. due to impact?
Two ball bearings of mass m each moving in the opposite directions with equal
speed v collide head-on with each other. Predict 0 = the outcome of the collision,
assuming it to be perfectly elastic.
A ball, whose kinetic energy is E, is projected at an angle of 45o to the horizontal.
What will be the kinetic energy of the ball at the highest point of its flight?
A body of mass M is moved along a straight line by a machine delivering a
constant power P. Find the expression for the distance moved by the body in
terms of M, P and t.
31. A body is lifted to the top of a mountain over the path ADC, and again over the
path ABC. Prove that the work done is the same provided the force is directed
along the tangent to the path and the coefficient of friction is the same on both
the slopes.
32. What are conservative forces? Obtain expression for the work done by a variable
force?
33. The spring has a force constant of 24 N m-1. The mass of the block attached to
the spring is 4 kg. Initially, the block is at rest and spring is un-stretched. The
horizontal surface is frictionless. If a constant horizontal force of 10 N is applied
on the block, then what is the speed of the block when it has been moved
through a distance of 0.5 m?
34. A body of mass 0.3 kg is taken up an inclined plane of length 10m and height 5
m, and then allowed to slide down to the bottom again. The coefficient of friction
between the body and the plane is 0.15. What is the (a) Work done by the
gravitational force over the round trip,(b) Work done by the applied force over the
upward journey,(c) Work done by frictional force over the round trip,(d) Kinetic
energy of the body at the end of the trip?
